Introduction

This document lists health and safety standards which the Council expects contractors to apply on Council sites to manage health and safety risks and comply with relevant legal requirements. When preparing safety method statements and risk assessments, contractors are expected to assess all their significant risks and, if work hazards are not covered by the standards listed in this document, they must adopt health and safety performance standards appropriate to the work they undertake.

This document aims to help contractors to avoid putting those carrying out work on Council undertakings (as well as any others, including Council employees or members of the public who may be affected by Council undertakings) at unacceptable risk to their health and safety. It also intends to ensure that the Council and its contractors have a shared understanding of the health and safety performance standards required when performing types of work covered by one or more of the listed standards and ensure a mutual understanding of the health and safety expectations which apply to the work being undertaken by contractors on Council sites.
