This turbulence helps minimize the insulating film layer. Flow across the fin can be laminar, transitional, or turbulent layer. When flow is laminar there is little or no movement immediately next to the fin. This stagnant layer hinders heat transfer and acts as insulation (insulating film). dmi's fin design disrupts much of the stationary insulating film, thereby improving heat transfer. Although turbulence increases pressure drop through the heat exchanger, the improvement in heat transfer more than compensates for the higher pressure drop.
