Continuing the Little League® tradition of making it “safer for the kids.”

Granada Little League out of Livermore, California was recognized during this year’s Little League Baseball® World Series as the 2017 National Safety Winner for the A Safety Awareness Program (ASAP)

Representing the West Region, the safety program for Granada Little League from California, stood out for several reasons. For example, outlining rules and expectations on speed limits in the parking lots and respecting the rules of the posted signs around the park. But, the league also paid close attention to taking identification badges, and training, to the next level. “One of the things we’ve been focusing on over the last several years, is trying to do a better screening and identification of volunteers,” League President Steve Wilde said. “Just

trying to be a little more intentional with anticipating, not just the expected safety concerns with player safety and injuries, which we try to be intentional with that, but also some of the larger issues that could go overlooked.”

Mr. Wilde says that one of their secrets for success is simple: pay attention to what other leagues are doing.

“We unapologetically looked to what other leagues had done in the past, what other leagues that had great safety plans had done in the past. We tried to take some of that and improve upon it,” Mr. Wilde said.

Additionally, the league has focused on training the individuals involved with Granada Little League.

“We’re trying to equip our adults, our coaches, our parents. How do we expand the intentionality we have to training the folks who are at the practices, at the games, those first responders, to some of the minor injuries that take place,” Mr. Wilde said.

Safety Officer Rick Seely credited the support of the entire league for making their safety plan a reality.

“We’re fortunate to have a very dedicated board, as well as coaching members of the organization, who really stepped up to the plate and followed through. Without that additional support, it doesn’t happen,” Mr. Seely said.

Mr. Wilde and the board credit ASAP for allowing them to stay on top of their game when it comes to safety.

“The impact for us is it’s an articulation of an intention that you’re held accountable to. We’ve really benefitted from that. Every year the ASAP program has been that catalyst that has got us to think about how do we do better safety for our players, for our umpires, for our coaches, and for our facilities. The ASAP program, provides great direction, and resources. But, in some ways, the greatest contribution is that catalyst to

every year get us to think about how do we do better than we did last year,” Mr. Wilde said.

As the national safety winner, Granada Little League will receive a free LED lighting system for a 200-foot field.

Congratulations to Granada Little League on a great safety plan and for helping make the game safer for the children and volunteers!
