SCHEDULE OF CLASSES GENERAL INTEREST & HOBBIES

I LIKE ME!Instructor: Dr. Johnnie MartinParker Palmer, a writer whom I adore, says, “Formation is journeying, individually and in community, to our inner selves, our hearts and souls, to identify our true selves and our deep integrity.” Let’s join together to explore who we are and what/who has influenced the shaping of our lives. Mostly using quality children’s books as our springboards for discussion and writing, we will come to better know ourselves through a variety of techniques such as reflecting, journaling, discussion, poetry, readings, and projects. Our time together will be a safe space to set aside judgements, refrain from fixing each other, and learn to listen deeply to feelings beneath words and share our stories only to the extent we are comfortable. Quaker writer Douglas Steere puts it, “Holy listening- to ‘listen’ another’s soul into life, into a condition of disclosure and discovery -- may be almost the greatest service that any human being ever performs for another.” Come, join this class and let’s get to know and appreciate ourselves! You will also get to know wonderful children’s books to share with your own children and grandchildren as an added incentive to come!

Materials to bring: A journal you love, a pen you enjoy using, a ½ inch binder and paper, a smile, and respect for others.

Simple Remedies for Your HealthInstructor: Roxanne ParrisThere are many things that are readily available to you to help you maintain or enhance your health. While your doctor has the final say in anything, there are different things you can do to mitigate health issues in an emergency or if you do not have immediate access to healthcare. Something as simple as charcoal can deal with poisons. Different herbs can be used to deal with ant bites and bee stings. Other things can be used in case you are bleeding severely and need immediate attention. A simple splint can help you get out of a dangerous situation. Learning how to use these things effectively until you can get to a licensed medical provider may be beneficial to your health. In this class, we will learn how to handle some of these different issues using simple things that are readily accessed.

TITLe IX Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. The Title IX regulation describes the conduct that violates Title IX. Examples of the types of discrimination that are covered under Title IX include sexual harassment, sexual violence, and discrimination based on pregnancy. To enforce Title IX, the U.S. Department of Education maintains an Office for Civil Rights, with headquarters in Washington, DC and 12 offices across the United States.

Reports of sexual violence at Isothermal Community College will be handled by the Sexual Assault Response Team, consisting of the Title IX Coordinator, Deputy Coordinators, representatives for the Campus Enforcement, and coun-seling departments as appropriate. These people are the primary resources for the student, employee, or community member. An incident report will be filed by one of the members of the team. This incident will be included in the An-nual Crime Report and disclosed in compliance with federal guidelines. The complainant will be informed of his or her option to notify law enforcement to pursue criminal charges. Campus authorities and/or other appropriate agencies may assist in this process. The Title IX Coordinator and Deputy Coordinators may take action from a campus judicial standpoint if the respondent is a cur-rent student, and the complainant is willing to file a formal complaint. How-ever, whether or not the complainant files a formal complaint, an investigation and intermittent measures may be pursued to enable the complainant to have equal access to his or her educational program. Campus Enforcement will then be notified, and actions to increase safety on campus may be taken.

At Isothermal Community College, personnel have been designated as Title IX Coordinators. Any concerns or complaints regarding Title IX should be directed to one of the designated coordinators including:

The Basic Law Enforcement Training Program (BLET) taught at Isothermal Community College is a 640-hour program that pre-pares students to become certified law enforcement officers. With a staff of more than 40 instructors, the BLET includes 33 topics that cover virtually every basic task that an inexperienced officer should know.

The BLET meets from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm Monday through Thursday evenings, with Friday and Saturday training included. The program lasts approximately nine months. Students in BLET are exposed to a broad array of training including both classroom lecture, and hands-on skill training (driver training, firearms, etc.) The BLET program is regulated by the NC Criminal Justice Train-ing and Standards Commission. As such, the BLET must meet the highest standards as it trains each class of future law enforce-ment officers. Exciting, challenging, demanding, and rewarding, the BLET program is your entry into a career like no other!
