Ballroom Dance Level IDon’t just watch the stars dance, learn how to move around the dance floor in this fun dance class . Whether you’re just beginning ballroom dancing, or would like to brush up on your basic dance moves, this dance class is for you . You’ll learn the swing, waltz and rumba, while you stay in shape and socialize .  Register early as class size is limited .

Your Ballroom Dance instructors are Dave & Karen Goggin from the Eau Claire area . They have over 30 years of combined professional teaching experience in Ballroom & Latin dancing .  They teach a combination of private and group lessons in the Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, and Marshfield areas . Dave and Karen welcome singles and couples into their classes and take a personal interest in making sure everyone, including novice and experienced participants, have fun while learning .

See just how easy it can be to learn an instrument and play popular songs! During small group lessons for bass guitar, guitar, ukulele, mandolin or banjo, you will be introduced to the beginner chords, scales, and playing techniques . You will also learn proper instrument position, study basic music theory and start to understand why and when notes are played .

Your instructor, Roger Harrison, is a seasoned and versatile musician . He joined the Musicians’ Union at the young age of 13 and has been teaching others to make music ever since . Playing in his family band, Roger has performed as the opening act for Conway Twitty, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams Jr . and other nationally known performers .

Red Cedar ChoirThe Red Cedar Choir is a partnership with the UW-BC Music Department and surrounding communities . You will have the incredible opportunity to sing and be part of one of the best choirs in the area . It is open to all community members, high school age and older .  An audition may be required for new members . The choir is under the direction of Beth Joosten .  She is the Assistant Director of Choral Activities at UW-Eau Claire and directs the choral ensembles at UW-BC . Joosten has been the director of the Red Cedar Choir since 2012 .

Communiversity BandCommuniversity Symphonic Band is a joint effort of the UW-BC Music Department and the adult musicians of the surrounding communities . The band performs one concert during each semester and special concerts in neighboring communities . This ensemble is open to any student or community member . Director Mike Joosten has a bachelor’s degree from UW-La Crosse and master’s degree from Southern Oregon University . Since 1984 he has been teaching instrumental music in the Cameron School District; directing the high school and middle school concert bands, marching band, and jazz ensembles .  Joosten has been the director of the Communiversity Symphonic Band since 2001 .

Introduction to the Art of Fused GlassFused glass is the process of cutting and layering art glass to create colorful, durable pieces of art . After a brief review of art glass and its history, proper cutting and safety instructions and design concepts, students will create two small projects that the instructor will kiln fire in her studio . Students will need to pick their completed projects up at UW-BC the week following class . Space is limited, so register early!

Fused Glass for the Holidays In this beginner-intermediate class, students will review proper cutting and safety instructions and design concepts before creating up to four small holiday ornaments or one serving plate or bowl up to 8” x 8” using colorful art glass . Fused glass instructor Elizabeth (Liz) Alberg has expressed her creative side throughout most of her life . She has studied with professional watercolor artists both in the US and France, and was introduced to Fused Glass Art in 2015 . Liz has since studied with some of the top glass artists in the field . Sharing this art form with others is her true passion!

Wood Chip CarvingLearn how to carve intricate designs into wood during “Old World Style Chip Carving” taught by award winning wood carver, artist and author, Jan Jenson of Eau Claire . Using techniques that she and other chip carvers use to create intricate geometric patterns in wood, participants will carve a small keepsake project .

Participants should bring a bag lunch .

Watercolor for Beginners Create a new painting during each class session as you learn basic watercolor techniques including color mixing, washes, glazing, dry brush, and masking . Learn how to paint still lifes and landscapes .

Drawing for BeginnersCan’t draw a stick figure? No worries, this class will start with still life, move on to perspective and composition, and introduce you to portraits . Learn how to see the world around you in a new way and translate it to a piece of paper . We will be working primarily with charcoal and graphite on paper .

Your Drawing and Watercolor instructor, Ralph Wiegmann, studied violin, painting, drawing and ceramics at Interlochen Arts Academy as a teenager .  Ralph studied Graphic Design at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design and then moved into Fine Art at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, where he received his BFA in Painting & Drawing . After working several years in illustration, graphic design and set building in San Francisco, Ralph moved to Missoula, Montana to pursue his passion for painting and drawing . He received his MFA in Painting from the University of Montana .

Basketball OfficiatingDo you love the game of basketball and want to learn how to get in on the action as an Official? Through classwork, films, rules review and quizzes – you’ll learn what it takes to become a Licensed WIAA Basketball Official . We’ll spend time in the classroom and on the court to help you develop the knowledge and skills you need . Plus, you’ll learn how to successfully manage what takes place on the court, the sidelines, and in the stands . Both experienced officials wanting to sharpen their skills and aspiring officials looking to learn how to get on the court are encouraged to register . Successful completion of the course will result in advancing one level (max of L-4) within the WIAA system .

Instructor Tim Bassett was born and raised in Indiana where high school basketball is more than just a pastime, it is a passion . Tim has fueled his passion as licensed basketball official for over 25 years working in Indiana, Georgia, and Wisconsin . Tim is a WIAA Master Level basketball official in Wisconsin and has been selected to work the State Championships in Madison 7 times, most recently in 2015 . Tim and other veteran officials from the Arrowhead Officials Association will be leading the coursework both in the classroom and on the court .

Instructor Jeff Prince has been a WIAA registered official for 27 years . Since becoming registered for three-person officiating at sectional and regional games, he has officiated a total of 39 tournament games for boys and girls . Of those 39, he has been an official at 7 Regional Finals, 9 Semis Sectionals, 2 Sectional Finals and he was a 3 state Tournament Official in 2011, 2013 and 2015 .

Yoga for BeginnersYoga is a great way to balance the mind and body . There are many benefits of yoga for EVERY level of student: reduced stress, increase flexibility, gain strength, and improve sleep, digestion, mental clarity and focus . Learn the basics of yoga through the 6-week series that will teach both the asanas (postures) as well as the importance of pranayama (breath) . No prior yoga experience is required! All ages and levels of fitness are welcome! “A person who says they’re too tight or too busy for yoga is similar to someone saying they’re too hungry to eat dinner!”

Kristi Gay, RYT, is a registered yoga teacher currently teaching at The Yoga Studio of Rice Lake and Latitude 44 in Eau Claire . She completed her 200-hour training through CorePower in Woodbury, MN in 2015 after practicing yoga for 15 years . She wants to share the love of the practice with other future yogis .

Sell it Online!Learn the Secrets of Selling on eBay, Craigslist, Etsy, estate sales, auctions and other markets . In just a few hours, you can learn the financial secrets of recycling that have taken many people years to develop . Find out about the popular and not-so-popular outlets for your unwanted stuff and how to successfully sell or trade for the highest value . Learn the pros and cons of selling in each and how to write descriptions that sell . Bring an item or picture of something you would like to sell and learn how to write an effective description and find the right selling category . During class, your instructor will list one of her items on a popular site so you can see how easy it can be once you get going .

Participants should have at least a basic understanding of computer operation, the internet and email .

Your instructor, Dr . Lauren Wentz, is an Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at UW-Barron County . Previously she was an academic dean in Washington State and has extensive background in environmental education and natural history interpretation . Not only is she an avid recycler and online seller, Lauren has also been a licensed auctioneer in Ohio .

Mushrooms 101Edible or deadly? Join us for this great opportunity to learn from a 30-year veteran of wild mushroom foraging! This is a classroom session covering the “three rules-plus one” and the safe six: Morels, Shaggy Manes, Hens of the Woods, Chicken Mushrooms, Oyster Mushrooms, and Giant Puffballs . Topics include tree identification, ethics, safety, storage and preparation . Poisonous mushrooms will also be discussed .

Instructor Tavis Lynch is a 30-year veteran of wild mushroom foraging in northern Wisconsin, a skill he initially learned from his father . A certified expert by the MN Dept . of Agriculture, Lynch has been harvesting over 100 varieties of wild fungus and bringing hundreds of pounds safely to the public .

Healthy Hands Cooking & Kidding Around YogaKids ages 6-11 will have fun learning how to properly read a food label and determine how much sugar is in their favorite drinks/snacks . We’ll make four healthy recipes that inspire healthy habits at home: Cranberry Lime Fizz Drinks, Citrus Green Smoothies, Peanut Butter Apple Wraps, and Triple Melon Mint Salad . We will end the class with a 45-minute Kidding Around Yoga session for kids . We will explore the elements of balance, peace and good health by discussing the concepts of caring for one’s self and others using silly songs, poses, relaxation techniques and having a lot of fun!

Instructor Julie Emerson is a certified Holistic Nutritionist, a Certified Healthy Hands Cooking Instructor and a Certified Kidding Around Yoga youth yoga instructor . She has been instructing children’s cooking classes since Feb . 2016 in Barron and Chetek . She believes that teaching children healthy cooking skills and recipes they can do themselves (or with little help) is very important . The earlier that children discover healthy options, the greater the benefit to their growing bodies!

Community ConnectionsWith its growing number of international students on campus, UW-Barron County invites community members to participate in their Community Connections program .  You can make a small or large commitment by taking students out to a movie, a concert, a walk by the Red Cedar River, or a meal in your home with your family .  Some have shared canoe rides, ice-fishing, BBQ and holiday parties with our students . Befriending an international student is a great way for your family to get to

know someone from another culture and to share your own .  We especially need people to reach out to students in late August and September and then in December and January . STRUCTURE | ADJUST | CONSTRUCTArtwork by Lisa Wicka Lisa Wicka received her BFA from the University of Central Florida in 2005 and her MFA in Painting, Printmaking and Drawing in 2013 from Purdue University . Her work has shown both national and internationally in New York, Chicago, Toronto, Mexico and Edinburgh, and Sweden . In 2012, she was awarded a summer residency at the Ålgården workshop in Sweden and a residency at Sparkbox Studios in Canada in 2014 . She was awarded the Granville Memorial Award from the National Society of Arts and Letters for her mixed media sculptural work, exhibited in the Andy Warhol Museum May 2013 . Her work is in the permanent collections of Southern Graphics Council, Mid America Print Council, Oregon State University, Ohio State University .

WOMEN in the ARTSFeaturing work by Diana Budde, Letha Kelsey & Barbara ReinhartDiana Budde holds a B .S . in Art Education from Ball State University Honors College and a M .F .A . in Painting from the Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning College of the University of Cincinnati . Her work is a hybrid between printmaking and painting and investigates the relationship between the organic and the technological . 

From Letha Kelsey, “I cultivate my sensory experience with the outdoors by walking . The most recent paintings and drawings are in response to a hike across Wisconsin via the Ice Age National Scenic Trail . Their elements have been gleaned from eastern and southern portions of the state, primarily the Northern and Southern Kettle Moraine, and include late morning streams of light, huge fungi, funky canoe gardens, erratics, snakes and storms .”

Barbara Reinhart earned her M .F .A . from UW-Milwaukee and is a professor of art at UW-Waukesha . Reinhart’s work in ceramic sculpture, drawing and painting is connected through her long-term involvement with figurative/narrative themes .
