Context for learning: World War Two
As writers we will:
Recount our own experience of hearing the declaration of war by Neville Chamberlain in 1939
Explore “A story like the wind” by Gill Lewis and write a short narrative from the viewpoint of a refugee
Compare and describe two contrasting settings
Prepare a powerful speech for a young determined boy to read to his father.
Produce an informal letter in character to a grandparent written in the first person
Plan and write a formal letter of complaint for the living conditions during WW2
Plan and write a non chronological report on life in WW2
Explore evacuation and produce an informative leaflet on the process
As historians we will:
Place World War II events onto a timeline in
chronological order
Understand when, where and why World War II
started
Linked to the British value of Individual
Liberty, we will look at the role of wom-
en and how they played a vital part dur-
ing the war
Research into when rationing was
introduced and understand the affect that this
had on people’s lives

As Mathematicians we will use and apply our skills to:
Add and subtract fractions with different denominations including
mixed numbers
Multiply simple pairs of proper fractions writing our answers in the simplest form
Divide proper fractions by whole numbers
Associate a fraction with division and calculate decimal fraction equivalents
Recall and use equivalences between simple fractions, decimals and percentages
Identify the value of each digit in numbers given to three decimal places
Multiply and divide any given number by 10, 100 and 1000
Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals with up to two decimal places
Calculate percentages and fractions of amounts
Read, write and convert between standard units of measures including length,
mass, volume and time
Convert between miles and kilometres
Calculate the perimeter, area and volume of different shapes
Recognise when to use formulae for area and volume
Calculate the area of parallelograms and triangles
Use simple formulae and express missing number problems algebraically
Explore ratio and investigate problems involving the relative sizes of two quantities
Interpret and construct pie charts and line graphs
Find and calculate averages such as the mean
