Office of the President
I would like to thank the members at large – Ron
Hernandez and Sharon Renshaw - that have brought to
the board all the suggestions and concerns from the
membership. This enables us to see where we have done
well and what needs improvement.
If you would like to see the club doing something it is not
– feel free to contact a member at large.
If you are enjoying your club experience – feel free to
contact a member at large.
Every year the board looks for ways to improve and refine the club activities.
A lot of things are planned for the club this year.
There are many new and different adventures this year. The social calendar is filling up with a whole new
assortment of activities. Join in when you can and I am sure you will enjoy the road trips – car shows –
meet & greets or any other activity that is on the docket. Bob Redmond and the social committee are
doing a great job of providing an outstanding selection of events.
The racing schedule is as full as I have ever seen it.
The season started out with the auto crossing driving school May 12th. Don Angeroth put on a great
training program for new auto cross drivers. They learned the basics and have found out how much fun
they can have with their Corvette this summer. You race against cars in your same class but most of the
time you are racing the clock – you want to beat your last time and get better as the year proceeds. No
swapping paint here but the clock will be your nemesis.
Fill your calendar with all the events you can take in!
Get ready for a fun filled summer!
Your President
Kevin Reit
If Kevin had picked the car instead of Elan Musk.

From the Governor’s desk…
Wow, did I miss Spring somewhere in the past couple months? Seems that
summer made an instant appearance. A few of us spent the Memorial Day
weekend over at Newton Iowa doing high and low speed autocross. Tell you
what, with temps approaching 100 with no shade and zero breeze, the weekend
was tough on competitors, workers and the cars. We repeated the heat show last
weekend in Kansas City, but at least we had a breeze.
At this month’s meeting, we will start passing out flyers for the Summer Festival over the Labor Day
weekend. We encourage everyone to sign up early for this fun event. There will be high and low
speed autocross, a Funkhana, a Rallye and poker run, a car show, valve cover racing, chili cook-off,
golf tournament… wow what a weekend. We will also be offering t-shirts again this year, so another
reason to sign up early so we can get the order in to have the shirts at the chili cookoff. I have a
basement full of trophies for all the events, so please plan on coming out and having fun.
Summer bring us a lot of events and fun times for Cornhusker Corvette Club. We have many socials in
the next couple months, trips to Colorado and of course the race season is well under way with racing
in Iowa and our own event on 7-8 July at Lincoln Airpark.
If you have never autocrossed before, I strongly encourage you to come out to the 7-8 July event. It is
one of the safest venues we race at with no trees, curbs or light poles. Enter your car and try it out or
take a ride with any of the racers; they are always happy to take someone for a ride. Don’t forget we
still need assistance with corner workers and you get lunch out of the deal and a chance to win a really
nice gift card to one of our sponsors. Or just come out and enjoy watching America’s sports care being
put through it’s paces.
Hope to see all of you at the many events we have planned this summer. If you have ideas for new
events, please don’t hesitate to let our social director or I know and we can see what we can do to make
sure we always have something for everyone.

FINAL
Kevin Reit, as president, presided over the meeting.
The meeting began with the Club reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
Kevin announced there are two get well cards on the back table for everyone to sign for Carolyn Edmundson and
Dennie Laaker who are currently in a rehab center or a care center. Our Club is invited to Don Nelson’s wife’s 90th
birthday party on Sunday, June 17h from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Fremont Rural Fire Station on Highway 77 and
Englewood. City Garage, one of our contributors located at 3309 Oakview Drive, is having a fund raiser for the
Humane Society called Walk for the Animals on Wednesday, May 30th from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. Look for a survey
in Email from our Club asking if you would like to move the Awards Banquet from January to April. There will not
be a Board Meeting on June 7th.
Kevin announced National and Regional officers from our Club: Gary Brisbois, West Region RCD, Kathy Brisbois,
National Parliamentarian and Ron Bockerman, West Region Treasurer.
Kevin reminded us that Kathy and Jerry Koraleski are still collecting non-perishable food for the Stephens Center.
Kathy Brisbois is collecting toiletries for a homeless shelter.
Jayne Reit read the names of Members who have birthdays during the month of May.
Carolyn Horst, Secretary, asked for a motion to accept the minutes from the April 2018 meeting. Sandy Swift
made a motion to approve the minutes and Linda Adams seconded the motion.
Pete Fagan, Summer Festival Chairman, told us he still needs someone to help with Funkana. He explained
Summer Festival is a wrap up for the summer and will be held over Labor Day weekend as follows:
Friday, August 31st, party at Gene and Kathy Gau’s home with auto tech and Valve Cover Racing.
Saturday, September 1st, auto cross at RPM with car show and dinner at Quaker Steak and Lube Sunday,
September 2nd, high speed racing at RPM and golf tournament at Papio Creek Golf Course Monday,
September 3rd, funkana and rallye.
Pete Fagan, Newsletter Editor , had nothing to report.
Kevin introduced Sharon Renshaw and Ron Hernandez are the Club’s Members at Large and to take any concerns
about the Club to them.
Chris Tooker, Membership Director, told us he has 13 copies of the Club Roster for any member who wants one.
An electronic copy of the Roster will be sent to everyone. He thanked Jan Richardson for her help on the Roster
since she has asked to be relieved of this duty. Chris announced we now have 355 members. He introduced new
members Cindy and Richard Colfack, Terri and Gerard Smieja and Tristen and Mark Adams.

Ray Zimmerman, Public Relations, drew Pam DeLong’s name for a free dinner
at next month’s meeting under the Wear Your Name Badge to the Meeting
program. New members should see Ray about ordering a name badge. He
encouraged us to use the services of our contributors.
Tom Horeis, Treasurer, went over the budget figures for April by line item.
Jon Brown, Governor, attended the Governors’ Meeting the first weekend in
May. It was determined that a waiver needs to be signed only for
competitions, parades, funkhanas, rallyes and road trips (where we have moving cars) – not for meetings, social
events and car shows. Any ZR1 that participates in auto cross will be in the N class with the Z06 Corvettes. Drag
records are no longer listed in the Blue Bars. You will need to look on-line for these records. Beginning next year
the West Region will be offering three $500 scholarships for NCCC family members to attend college.
Ray Kennedy, Vice President, wished all of the mothers in our Club a happy mother’s day. Ray asked for a show of
hands of those who would like to move the Awards Banquet from January to April. The majority voted to move
the banquet. On June 3rd, we are invited to participate In Veteran’s Appreciation at Veteran’s Field, which is the
old North Omaha Airport. Jim Walton has secured free tickets for the I 80 Speedway on Friday, May 18th for any
Club member who wishes to attend. Ray also has 4 free passes for racing at the I 80 Speedway on May 26th if
anyone would like to use these passes.
Don Angeroth, Competition Director, asked everyone who
participated in the driving school on May 12th to come forward and
have their picture taken. He reminded us we will be racing on May
19th and 20th at Southeast Community College in Lincoln. On May
26th-28th, CCI is hosting auto cross and high speed racing at the Iowa
Speedway in Newton, Iowa. On June 9th and 10th Kansas City will be
holding their auto cross. There will be auto cross on June 23rd and
24th at Chariton, Iowa. On July 7th and 8th, we will race at the
Lincoln Air Park. The National Convention is the week of July 15th in
New Orleans. Drag racing is set for July 29th in Onawa, IA.
Don Peers spoke about the Annual Corvette Show at Peers Auto Works on June 16th with proceeds going to
Nebraska Soap Box Derby.
Ron Bockerman and Jim Benedict, who are heading the drag racing at the Onawa Racing Event Complex in Onawa,
IA, spoke about the newly opened track. Our Club is scheduled to hold drag racing events on Sunday, July 29th.
There will be a lot more information available as we get closer to July 29th.
Gene Gau, who is heading the Corner Worker Program, told us about the rewards of being a corner worker. As
soon as you have earned 25 points, you will receive a gift card from one of our sponsors.
Bob Redmond, Social Director, told us about upcoming social events as follows:
1. Meet and Greet at Stumble Inn in Bennington on May 23rd with informational meeting for those Club
members who are going on the Roads Less Traveled in Colorado in August.

Dear Gene: Kathy and I are having a ton of fun with my new toy! Several unnecessary trips to the grocery store that's 14 miles away, and yesterday a Sunday afternoon road trip to a shopping and gift store village about 50 miles away by taking one route there and another to get back. Lots of winding narrow roads thru heavy forest with curves posted between 35 and 45, but took them all at about 60 with hardly any side pressure --- GREAT FUN !!! When a deer popped out of the woods I was equally impressed by how blazing fast those big ceramic brakes can bring 60 back to zero -- didn't even come close to the deer. In fact, its been so much fun that I almost blew right past the 500 mile initial oil change requirement so I hope that our small town dealership is experienced with track-ready dry sump engine lubrication systems (our Grand Sport shares that same system design with the Z06). If not, they should be able to follow a shop manual for the rather unique process.
Anyway, I can't thank you, Jerry and Howard enough for helping make all this fun possible. -- Dennis & Kathy Schafer

Howard, Jerry and Gene’s excellent adventure to Minnesota
Have you ever left on a trip and you knew ahead of time that it was going to be rewarding
and fun? Well that’s what happened last May 25th., to Gene Jerry and myself. Oh nuts,
let me back up. On Monday the 21st of May, an e-mail went out to club members to see
if anyone knew how a total stranger could get a brand-new C-7 Corvette shipped to Nevis,
Minnesota. My first question was, where the hell is Nevis Minnesota?
Gene contacted the total stranger and had him over to
inspect the truck and trailer. You can’t just haul a new C-7
in just any old rig. With the total stranger’s approval, the
deal came together. The stranger and his wife even
showed up to the Stumble Inn that Wednesday night, and
they had a ball talking to Sharon and I, along with a lot of
others.
Gene and Jerry didn’t have anything to do later that week,
so they agreed to do the deed. Since I knew more about
the total stranger than anyone else, Gene invited me
along.
Off we went with a full tank of fuel, sandwiches, pop.
water, fruit, nuts, berries, popcorn, coffee and good
directions.
Unfortunately, all the rest areas where closed along the
way, so if you gotta go, you gotta go. That’s one of the
advantages of pulling a gooseneck trailer. Plenty of room
between the truck and trailer.
I’ve been told that Minnesota has 10,000 lakes. Well, we
only saw 9,286. At about 2 pm, we pulled into Nevis,
Minnesota, the home of Dennis and Kathy Schaffer. Yes,
the total stranger and his wife. Boy were they happy to
see us since Gene had called ahead and told Dennis that
we were in Mexico and had gotten a helluva good price
for their Corvette.

Corvette Museum Sinkhole Revisited
By Bill Cashell
If you have been to the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green lately, you will notice that the
biggest attraction is missing. The sinkhole has been filled.
In case you are not familiar with the story, a sinkhole at the National Corvette Museum in
Bowling Green, Kentucky consumed eight prized sports cars in February 12, 2014. The
sight of crumpled cars toppled like toys in the gaping pit turned into an Internet
sensation.
It also became a popular attraction.
People gawking at the hole revved
up attendance and revenue at the
museum, an hour north of Nashville,
Tennessee. The museum cashed in
by selling sinkhole-themed T-shirts,
videos, postcards, and jars filled with
sinkhole dirt and tiny pieces of car
parts.
The hole opened up when the museum was closed, and no one was injured. Security
camera footage showing the floor's collapse has been viewed nearly 8.9 million times on
YouTube. See the video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IukDWhf7U9I.
The damaged Corvettes were pulled from the hole to great fanfare.
Page | 10 Jun 2018
We (Bill & Kathy Cashell and Sam & Jodi DePetro) decided to make a stop there in
February, while driving back from sunny Florida. The Museum officials said they had no
second thoughts about plugging up a moneymaker. The option of keeping part of the 60-
foot-long, 45-foot-wide, 30-foot-deep sinkhole open lost favor due to the costs of safety
features and maintenance. The moisture pulled in from the ground was also a problem,
as well as decreased stability.
Actually, without the cars, it didn’t seem
like that big of a deal to see a sink hole.
You know what they say about sink
holes. You’ve seen one, you’ve seen
them all. Well, it may be gone, but it is
certainly not forgotten.
Before you get to the display area where the sinkhole was, you find the story of the cave
in. This panel provides photos, videos and facts on each of the cars, as well as an
interactive “before” model of each Corvette. An illuminated acrylic case illustrates
precisely where each car fell into the hole.
Then, you walk into a simulated cave that demonstrated the cave-in with projectors and
sound in a sensory experience. Ever wonder what it might be like inside a cave, when
Page | 11 Jun 2018
suddenly it starts to collapse? Sounds a little scary, right? Not good for those who are
claustrophobic, but I imagine it is a great place for first dates.
After the shaking stops (maybe it
was me) you exit into the Skydome
where all eight of the “sinkhole
Corvettes” remain on display.
The two Corvettes in front were restored by General Motors. The 1962 Black Convertible
on the left was repaired in the museum Maintenance and Preservation Department. It
had just been brought out for display.
The other six cars look just as they did after being rescued from the sinkhole. (I cried!)
Page | 12 Jun 2018
The sinkhole is still a major attraction. Who knew a hole in the ground could be so
interesting?
