A critical factor in the long term economic health and growth of an economy is the
level of entrepreneurship and start up business activity. On the evidence of the
companies showcased in the High Potential Start Ups ‘Class of 2010’, Ireland’s
standing as a highly entrepreneurial and innovative society is confirmed. These
are the companies that build on Ireland’s already-strong entrepreneurial base,
and show that they can pursue growth opportunities from anywhere in the world,
and compete and win in global markets.
Their impact is significant, not just in terms of the jobs that they will create, but
also in their capacity to grow rapidly and contribute to export led growth and the
revitalisation of the national economy. The past few years have been very
challenging but the tide has very definitely turned in Ireland. Irish exports are at
an all time high and economic recovery in international markets is fuelling
increased demand for Irish products and services. Irish companies are widening
their market reach, expanding into new international markets, and opening up
new business.

This speaks volumes about the tenacity, creativity, dynamism and determination
of Irish companies and their willingness to forge ahead. I am greatly encouraged
by the very high level of activity we continue to see with new and early stage
companies and the exciting opportunities they will bring in the future. The
environment for new business start ups is strong, and there are significant
opportunities right across the business spectrum. Enterprise Ireland is committed
to doing everything possible to drive entrepreneurial growth.

The ‘Class of 2010’ event showcases 80 High Potential Start-Up companies that
have successfully established new businesses in Ireland. This event provides an
opportunity to applaud the courage and commitment of the entrepreneurs and
management teams and to showcase new Irish businesses with the potential to
grow, scale and internationalise. Of the 80 companies, 34 are software and
services related, with 38 involving life sciences, clean tech and other industrial
products and a further 8 involved in the food and consumer sector.
Enterprise Ireland is committed to supporting entrepreneurs to ensure that their
emerging technologies and business ideas with export potential become a
commercial reality. Furthermore, we work to assist Irish Start-Up companies to
achieve scale at the earliest stage of development. Dedicated teams within
Enterprise Ireland work intensively with the entrepreneurs and management
team behind each start-up, assisting them in transforming a business plan into a
new business, selling successfully on export markets.

3Strata Technologies develop software applications for specialised healthcare providers. 3Strata Technologies Ltd was established in March 2010 to develop and commercialise a web-based software application to manage the administration of travel vaccine medication. The application also provides ’best practice’ guidelines for the healthcare provider thereby enabling non-specialist clinics to expand into this area. The software stems from an existing ‘on premise’ solution which was developed and
deployed over the last 10 years (by the main promoter Richard Boyd) to service the needs of the Tropical Medical Bureau (TMB) franchise which operates 23 clinics in Ireland.

Amulet Devices Ltd is a technology innovation company specializing in voice control for consumer electronics. Their voice recognition products provide a natural extension of user interfaces to control and search large, difficult to manage media collections. Brite:bill provides enterprise software to postal carriers and large biller organisations. For postal providers we offer a digital postal service in global exclusive partnership with Accenture. This supplies traditional postal providers with a new digital service for their customers and give consumers an aggregate way to organise all of their online communication. Gourmet Marine Ltd (GM) is an Innovative High Potential Start-Up company from UCC, led by Dr Gerry Mouzakitis. The company has developed the world’s first and only system for culturing sea urchins (for the worldwide sushi market), called the UrchinPlatter™ System. This proprietary and novel technology allows farmers to culture sea urchins quickly and efficiently. Independent commercial validations in Ireland have confirmed that the system can more than double the meat content of sea urchins in 12 weeks, thereby more than doubling the value of the catch. The UrchinPlatter™ System has also attracted a large amount of commercial interest in Chile, the world’s largest producer of sea urchins.
By leveraging the commercial interest, Gourmet Marine has secured US$250,000 from the Chilean government for independent validation of the system in the country in conjunction with Chile’s premier aquaculture university. In March 2011, the UrchinPlatter™ System produced the first ever cultured roe from the Chilean sea urchin. First commercial orders are expected in Q2 2011. Conservatively, the total potential market for this technology is valued at around €650 million.
