A sundial will only work in one location, at one precisely measured

intersection of latitude and longitude. It is by definition a unique

artefact, and by nature a defiant exception to the aesthetics and

methods of mass production.

At David Harber Limited, this simple scientific truth is the driving

force behind every dial, sculpture and water feature we create.

Inspired by ancient mathematical principles and designed to

reflect the patterns, colours and textures of the natural world, they

enable individual landscapes and interiors to express their own

inimitable sense of place – today and for generations to come.

TimeIn conversation with David Harber

&EMOTION

Oxford, 1992: one particular

moment in one particular

place. An antique dealer’s

van pulls up in a sunlit street and

the rear doors open to reveal an

ancient armillary sphere. A friend of

the dealer, visiting with his two-year-

old, glances into the van and, to his

surprise, feels an immediate affinity

for the object before him. That same

hour, father and daughter are in the

Museum of the History of Science,

buying a book on sundials. That

same evening, David Harber’s first

project is underway.

Fast forward to 2009 – 17 years

and several hundred sundials,

sculptures and water features later.

David Harber has become David

Harber Limited and, along with a

team of highly skilled craftsmen, has

won a clutch of awards and acquired

clients on four continents. In

another revelatory moment, David’s

father discovers that he is a direct

descendant of the Elizabethan

mathematician and scientific

instrument maker John Blagrave,

one of England’s great dialists, who

lived most of his life not 20 miles

from David’s rural workshop.

Fate? Biology? Serendipity?

Sitting in his garden at Dial House,

surrounded by examples of his work,

David seems happy to accept any

or all of the above. “It’s true that

I’ve always drawn inspiration from

past masters, so of course it was

wonderful to learn that I’m actually

related to one! But the important

thing about this job – and for me,

one of its greatest attractions – is that

the principles behind it don’t depend

on individuals. The mathematics

and cosmology on which most of our

work is based are exactly the same

now as they were 400 years ago, or

4000 years ago. All we have to do

is choose where, when and how to

make these invisible things visible.”

He makes it sound simple. But

of course it’s the ‘where, when

and how’ that provides the unique

creative spark for every piece David

produces, and ensures that no two

installations are ever quite the same.

“Whatever we do for you, whether

it’s starting from a blank sheet of

paper or localising and personalising

one of our existing classic designs,

our aim is to create something that

is exactly right for your particular

location. Latitude and longitude,

shape and scale, viewing angles,

seasonal changes, planting schemes

– the more variables we can take into

account, the closer the end result will

match your personal vision of what a

place should be, and the longer that

vision is likely to last.”

Lasting personal statements go to

the very heart of what David Harber

is all about. He puts it down to the

moment early in his career when the

restoration of a 500-year-old dial took

on a new, emotional dimension with

the discovery of the original maker’s

name under half a millennium of

verdigris. “It was the thought that this

man had stood in the same spot,

after grappling with exactly the same

ideas and challenges that I deal with

every day, and was sending me this

greeting or recognition down through

the ages. I thought that if I could do

that with my own work, it wouldn’t

much matter if I made ten more

pieces or a thousand – it would still

be a job well done.”

Ever since, David’s signature

work has focused on materials that

will stand the test of time, whether

they be traditional metals, glass

and stone, or more contemporary

variations. By combining this wide

range of quality ‘base elements’ with

a variety of finishing techniques,

the workshop can produce an

extraordinary number of different

designs and colours while still

maintaining the underlying strength

and solidity required to speak clearly

to future generations.

Here in the shadow of a

thousand-year-old village church,

watching the sun play its slow-motion

tricks with a selection of David

Harber dials and sculptures, it’s not

hard to see his point. While each

piece is indeed built for a particular

time and place, they nevertheless

share a strong bond of continuity and

tradition – a sense both of a road well

travelled and a journey just begun.

It’s true that I’ve always drawn inspiration from past masters, so of course it was wonderful to learn that I’m actually related to one!

“ ”

Whatever we do for you, whether it’s starting from a blank sheet of paper or localising and personalising one of our existing classic designs, our aim is to create something that is exactly right for your particular location.

MASTERSOFTHEIRCRAFT

At a time when little is handmade and still less handmade in

England, it is reassuring to know that every David Harber design is built

by a real human being. Or, in most cases, several human beings.

From welding, enamelling and polishing to etching, engraving and gold-

leafing, our hand-picked team of craftsmen bring generations of inherited

knowledge and skill to everything they touch. And with every piece they

create, their legacy is strengthened and secured for generations to come.

DavidHarberathomeNestled in the shadow of a Bronze-Age hill fort, our

Oxfordshire workshop is the perfect place to meet the

team. Here you can see at first hand how art and design,

ancient crafts and precision engineering come together

to create a unique response to your individual brief.

In the display garden at the nearby Dial House, you can

also get up close to a collection of finished pieces –

a three-dimensional experience that no brochure

can begin to match. To visit either site, or both, please

PERSONALISATIONFor armillary spheres and other sundials in particular, our skilled engravers can also personalise your piece

with specially commissioned text, either displayed overtly for all to see or hidden for the chosen few.

Traditionally, any message carried by a sundial is imbued with the same oracular power as the motions of the

heavens themselves. To make your statement you can choose anything from mottos, quotations and lines of poetry to personal

references such as names, dates or the distance and bearing of up to five locations with which you have a special connection.

Starting with a classic David Harber design, you can choose from

countless combinations of size, material and finish to make it uniquely yours.

architects to have taken on the three-

dimensional challenge of the vertical

dial (latitude, longitude and angle to the

ecliptic) to give voice and movement to

metre-tall Jurassic Purbeck standing stones

and an additional monolith with a precisely

bored aperture showing the point on the

horizon where the third millennium’s first

rays of sunlight appeared.

The stones are accompanied by a

Crafted from verdigris copper plates, this mythic

female figure orchestrates the interplay between

light and shade with a disc that can be marked as a

sundial or etched with the lines of a favourite poem.

GlobeDialSet on a plinth of Purbeck Stone, this shimmering silver orb tells the time not

only during the day but also on the three or four nights before and after every full

moon. Balliol College, Oxford recently installed a customised version of this dial to

commemorate the arrival of the first female undergraduate on 11th October 1979.

Engraved with the words ‘About Time’, the dial features a notch on the gnomon

that causes a specially marked line to light up on the same day every year.

Blagravearmillarysphere

A special tribute to David’s direct ancestor, the Elizabethan dialist John Blagrave. Using Blagrave’s

own illustrations, we have endeavoured to keep the design as faithful as possible to the original,

including a contemporary world map and the twelve signs of the zodiac. The dial was temporarily

sited for photography at St John’s College, Oxford where John Blagrave was a student.

SCULPTURESEvery David Harber creation is, in essence, a sculpture.

Beyond the functional imperatives of time keeping,

David is inspired by the more abstract qualities of

light, shadow, reflection and organic structure, and

delights in exploring the juxtaposition of contrasting yet

complementary materials.

MantleThis stunning sphere is made up of hundreds of

bronze ‘leaves’ linked into an organic latticework of blue-

green verdigris. The underside of each leaf is gilded with

23¾-carat gold leaf which even on the greyest days gives

the interior an ethereal golden glow.

positioned pebbles, the Dark Planet will pull even the most casual observer into its mysterious gravitational field.

WATERFEATURES

Where there is water, there is life. At rest or in motion,

its elemental presence, soothing sound and shifting

patterns of light bring peace and psychological

refreshment to interior and outdoor spaces alike.

ChaliceA unique, award-winning design combining an

enchanting water feature and a sundial whose design

dates back to 300BC. Pumped in a circular motion,

the water swirls over the outer rim and through the

magic of surface tension continues to rotate down

and around the hemisphere before flowing off at the

bottom. Lit with low-power LEDs, the Chalice is a

stunning feature both during the day and after dark.

EkhoReminiscent of a Greco-Roman temple bowl, this classical shallow bronze sculpture is oxidised to a natural blue-

green verdigris patina and features a striking 23¾-carat gold waterline which is reflected in the ripples that pulse

constantly from the centre of the dish to the edge. It takes its name from the water nymph of Greek legend.

CrucelloA contemporary variation of the classical three-tiered fountain, designed for a large circular pool of water.

The piece is made of verdigris bronze and combines clean simple lines with the simple yet entrancing effect

of surrounding each tier with a sheer veil of water.

CasestudyYou’reaninterioranda

gardendesigner:isn’tthat

quiteararecombination?

Perhaps, but for me it just happened that

way. I ran an interior design consultancy,

Gramlick Designs, for 30 years and gardens

were something I did occasionally because

I loved it. When I handed the business over

to a couple of colleagues in 2010 I found

myself continuing with the garden work.

And it’s actually turned out to be the ideal

job for my retirement!

Tellusabout

yourlatestproject.

Areturntooldhaunts?

Yes, this is a lovely, elegant Georgian town

house that was one of the last properties I

worked on while I was still with Gramlick.

Back then, the brief was to re-invent the

inside as an exciting, modern family home;

this time, it’s about doing the same for the

outside, which is about six-and-a-half acres

of lawns, borders and woodland.

That’salotofgarden

foratownhouse?

Yes, it’s big – but it had also become very

drab and institutional, after use as a

nursing home and offices My brief for both

house and garden was to create a kind of

Big Bang effect – something that would

make a huge impact right from its inception

but also lay the foundations for a longer-

term evolution.

SohowdidDavidHarberhelp?

We wanted something bold and simple, so

we chose a total of four David Harber pieces:

a specially etched Chalice carrying details of

the house and family, together with a Kernel

and two Dark Planets. The client particularly

loved the Chalice and it does sit perfectly

in this space, surrounded by a low Buxus

hedge. As you can see, it gives a kind of

understated formality to the front elevation

of the house and also defines the entrance

to the North Garden, which like the house is

also elegant and restrained. The best view

is from the front door, where you look over

the Chalice, through the North Garden, and

down to the distant boundary of the paddock.

Howdothethree

darkerpieceswork?

We positioned those away from the house,

along the woodland walk that leads past the

North Garden yew, down to the expanse

of the paddock. When we started, the

wooded area consisted largely of self-

sown sycamore and laurel, so we replaced

those with multi-stemmed Betula utilis

jacquemontii and added the Kernel and

Dark Planets to create an air of mystery

and otherworldliness.

Howdidthatworkout?

Well, we certainly mystified a pheasant.

He saw his reflection in the Kernel and

couldn’t stop pecking at it!

Didyouconsiderother

suppliersforthispart

oftheproject?

Of course. But two things swung it for David

Harber: first, the simplicity and quality of

the pieces themselves; and second, the

way that David operates. Having run my

own company, I know how vital it is to have

total professionalism in the workplace, and

without exception he and his staff have

been professional and responsive.

Anddidthe‘bang’

Oh yes! He grew up in a National Garden

Scheme property, so he knows a good

garden when he sees one. But he’s also very

forward thinking, very much of his time, so I

think the exciting combination of traditional

and modern that we’ve achieved here has

absolutely been a dream come true.

Noon Day AnalemmaDeveloped by the Moors around 600BC, this dial face has a figure-of-eight showing the months of the year. The gnomon’s shadow tracks noon throughout the year.

MantleMade of verdigris bronze petals which are applied with 23¾-carat gold leaf on the inside, creating an astonishing glow even on the very dullest day. Also available in Corten and mirror-polished stainless steel. Diameter 76cm, 100cm, 120cm, 150cm.

QuillMade in Corten steel which has been oxidised. The Quill can be made of other materials including bronze, stainless steel or copper and made in varying heights. LED lighting incorporated.

Matrix A series of verdigris bronze hoops supporting randomly-placed reflective stainless steel plates whose inner surfaces are gilded in 23¾-carat gold leaf. Diameter 100cm, 160cm.

Dark Planet – PebbleA polished natural pebble sphere by day, transformed after dark by a subtle inner light. Made in varying diameters.

SlateRiven or smooth, the slate is letter-cut by hand and can be gilded with 23¾-carat gold leaf.

StoneAny hard stone can be used and is letter-cut by hand and usually filled with 23¾-carat gold leaf. We can source the right stone to match the surrounding wall.

VERTICALDIALS

The hours a vertical dial can show will depend entirely on the declination (angle to the sun’s path) of the wall to which you want it attached. We measure this during our site visit – or, where a visit is impractical, we supply a simple kit so you can make the measurement yourself.

Other design factors include choice of material, inclusion of frame, scale of the wall, position of windows, inclusion of quotations, dates, solstice and equinox lines and any dial furniture. The style and material of the gnomon can also be tailored.

LeadA smooth material, sign-written in 23¾-carat gold leaf. The surface can be either oiled to maintain a dark colour or left to oxidise to a silver finish.

CopperCopper usually has a verdigris patina which makes a wonderful contrast with the gold. The face of the dial can be sign-written in 23¾-carat gold leaf.

EnamelA stainless steel base, industrially enamelled in any colour you wish. The dial furniture is then sign-written by hand in any colour.

StripSpecially developed by David, these dials comprise strips of bronze, brass, copper or stainless steel attached directly to the surface of the wall. The numerals and dial furniture are laser cut to match.

GlassMade of clear or coloured glass, these strikingly modern variations offer an added dimension by reflecting sunlight as well as casting a shadow. The hour lines and dial furniture are all etched on the glass.

“The water feature is remarked upon by everyone who visits especially on the rotation effect, the lovely

sound of splashing water and it has retained its great looks and it keeps absolutely accurate time.”
