Introduction to R900 Modern Languages (BA Hons)

From the beginning of the academic session 2016/2017, Joint Honours programmes in two modern languages come under the umbrella heading of R900 Modern Languages (BA Hons), as distinct from T900 Modern Language Studies, which is a three-language programme. This involves no significant change in the previous situation, whereby all language combinations where identified separately (e.g French and German, Hispanic Studies and Russian etc). The programme is four-years long, with the third year of study spent in countries where the languages being studied are spoken. Students reading R900 will normally study 60 credits in each language in each year. The weightings and requirements within each language, whether it is being taken at post A-level (or equivalent) or ab initio (beginners), are detailed below under the Course Structure. At the end of their degree, students will have accumulated 180 credits in each language.

Language One Language Two Total credits

Year 1 60 credits 60 credits 120

Year 2 60 credits 60 credits 120

Year 3 Year Abroad

Year 4 60 credits 60 credits 120

180 180 360

Languages that may be studied are: Post A-level: French, German, Hispanic Studies*, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian Beginners’ Level: French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian/Croatian**, Spanish *Students taking Post A-level Spanish in combination with post A-level French, German or Russian, read Hispanic Studies, which is to say they must take Beginners’ Portuguese language in their first year at least. They may opt to drop Portuguese either at the end of the first year of their studies or at the end of Part One (the second year) or to maintain their study of Portuguese throughout the course. ** Serbian/Croatian can only be taken in R900 in combination with post A-level Russian Please refer to http://programmespec.nottingham.ac.uk/nottingham/asp/course_search.asp for formal programme specification documents.

Programme Pathways

The programme offers the following pathways: Students may not take more than one beginners’ language in the same year. It should be noted that, in the final year of the programme, all students are enrolled on the same core language modules, whether they began the degree as a post A-level student or an ab initio student and it is anticipated that all students will graduated with equivalent language skills. When a student graduates, their degree certificate will detail the languages they have read. At that point, no distinction will be made between beginners and other students. Thus, the certificate of a student who began the programme reading French and Beginners’ German will simply read French and German.

Programme Structure

The structure below is based on module availability for the Academic Session 2017/2018 ONLY. Where the letter N appears under the heading ‘compensatable’, this indicates that a module is core and MUST be passed in the first and second year to allow progression to the next level. This applies to core language modules, but not to other core, compensatable modules such as, for example immediately below, the module R11026 Introduction to French and Francophone Studies. It should be noted that in the final year, a student can fail a core language module but still pass their degree without a resit.

Year Out

After completion of Part I students will normally spend the following academic session in countries where the languages studied are spoken. Students will normally split their time abroad equally between the relevant countries, though some students may wish to weight the year abroad towards one language. Students who choose this option do so at their own risk. Exceptionally, part or all of the year abroad requirements may be waived at the discretion of the Head of School on recommendation of the Heads of the relevant Departments.
