Peer Editing
It is big problem!
Editing is an essential part of writing. It allows writers to improve and perfect their work. It also helps readers better understand the writer’s message. Peer editing is when one of your fellow classmates or writers reviews and edits your work. This is great for getting feedback and constructive criticism from another person. It can give you new ideas on how to improve your writing and also help you refine your work so the finished essay, story, or article is perfect. Some common mistakes to look for when peer editing are missing words, spelling, and grammar mistakes usually associated with the verb tenses (past, present, and future). Edit the two articles at the bottom of the page and correct any mistakes.

Using the Inverted Pyramid
A news story is written this way so that if the story needs to be shortened to fit onto a newspaper page, the least important information can be cut off the bottom without affecting the sense of the story. Read the Hansel and Gretel story. Skim the story for the 5 W’s and circle the information. Beside the inverted pyramid below, re-write the story.
In the top third write the most important information. In the middle put supporting information and background to the story. In the bottom third include the least important information.

Once upon a time, on the edge of a great forest, there lived a very poor woodcutter with his wife and two children, Hansel and Gretel. His second wife often ill-treated the children and was forever nagging the woodcutter. The family had little enough to eat, and once there was a great famine in the land, the man could no longer even get them their daily bread. “There is not enough food in the house for us all. There are too many mouths to feed! We must get rid of the two brats,” his wife declared.

Story Writing and Editing
When telling a story you need to let the reader know what has already happened, how long ago it happened and if it is still going on. The following to example paragraphs have many mistakes. You are the editor and need to help the writer fix them before a new draft can be written.
Use editing marks to correct the following paragraphs.
My Hobby My hobbie is collecting stamps. I started collect stamps when I was five years old? My
grandfather sent me a letter from canada, and I really liked the stamp. I began collect
more and more stamps, and soon I have more than 100! Last week, I read a book about
collecting stamps, and I see a picture of a beautiful stamp that was worth over $100
This hobby is very interesting, so I don’t think I will ever quit collect stamps.
My Favorite Place My favorite place is my grandmothers house. I started visit my grandmother on the
weekends when I was younger Last weekend, we play games and go hiking! Although
my grandmother is 82 years old, but she is very fun and active. My grandmother at all
does not act like an old woman? I always have fun when I visit her house, and that is
why my grandmother’s house is my favorite place.

Story Setting
Briefly describe the story setting in the boxes below. Think critically about the range of your story. A novel can take place over years and cover a large area – like a whole country. A short story probably only covers a small amount of time (like a day or a week) and a specific place – maybe a city, or maybe just a room in a house.
