President’s Corner

Now that the Summer season is over,

all Centres should be looking at next

season, with how you are going to

promote your Centre, your sign on,

how you can contact members who

don’t re-register, and most

importantly, remember that the IGA

State Championships are in Cairns

next year at Barlow Park.

The Board have an all-day meeting

this week, and these are some of the

issues we will be looking at, so any

Centres needing a hand, please

don’t hesitate to contact the LAQ

Office for advice or assistance.

As I mentioned, the 2014 IGA State

Championships will be held at Barlow

Park in Cairns, so all Centres that

normally book rooms in Townsville

should be looking at

accommodation as soon as possible.

Cairns is a large city, so it should not

be too much of a problem.

Simon Cook and myself attended

the Little Athletics Australia

Conference and ALAC’s in Canberra

last weekend. There were no motions

that affect LAQ as most were LAA

constitution clean ups, or withdrawn.

One of the major decisions to come

out of the Board meeting was to set

up a National Technical Committee.

This committee will be independent

of the LAA Board, and will be

charged with setting up rules and

events that will become standard

across all States

All States will be represented on this

committee, and it should end a

journey that began when George

Harvey was President of Australian

Little Athletics and first talked about

having standard rules and events

On Sunday, our team competed in

the ALAC’s, on a surprisingly warm

and dry day. I congratulate the

team for the way they conducted

themselves in Canberra leading up

to the Championships. All the team

personnel agreed that their conduct

was exemplary.

Of course, the reason for being there

was the Championships on Sunday. I

congratulate Little Athletics’ ACT for

a very well run event, and for

our athletes getting PB’s. A huge

only missed out on the Life Members

trophy by one point. So

congratulations to the whole team

for not only how you did on the

competition day, but for your

conduct for your time away with the

team.

In closing, all Winter Centres should

Medibank Healthy Centre Forums

Conducted in the North

Thanks to the generous support of

Medibank, LAQ held Healthy Centre

Forums in both the Tropical North

and North Queensland Regions on

the weekend. The forums were well

attended with 13 of the 15 Centres

from the 2 Regions in attendance.

The LAQ Vice President, Finance

Director, CEO, Operations Manager

and Project Officer facilitated the

forums which were structured in a

flexible way that allowed the Centres

to discuss what they wanted

covered. The topics raised at these 2

forums included registrations, Centre

support and services, athlete

programs, coaching, Regional and

Winter Championships, and officials.

The discussions were very positive

and LAQ is looking forward to

working with the Centres in the

northern regions to ensure all of the

outcomes are implemented in the

near future.

More Medibank Healthy Centre

Forums are planned for the rest of

the State so please note the details

contained elsewhere in this LA News

so that your Centre can be

represented.

2013 Medibank Conference – All

About the Centres!

I am pleased to announce the key

note speaker at the 2013 Medibank

Conference in Cairns will be Griffith

University Lecturer, Graham Cuskelly.

Graham is a “guru” in the world of

sport management having lectured

at Griffith for the past 22 years. He

has conducted many studies into the

workings of sport whether at the

grass roots or the elite level.

Graham’s field of expertise at the

moment is Capacity Building in sport

which he will be presenting at the

Conference.

He will also be sitting in on the Centre

Development workshop on Saturday

so the delegates will have an

opportunity to ask questions and

seek advice on their individual

Centres. We look forward to having

Graham at the Conference!

Resignation – Marc Saffin

The Association regretfully accepted

the resignation of Regional Support

Officer, Marc Saffin. Marc has taken

on a position with Volleyball South

Australia as their Senior Competition

Manager. Marc finished with LAQ

today and we wish him all the best

with his new role.

We will be reviewing this role before

making a decision on Marc’s

replacement.

registrations so far this season. If your

Centre has not sent in any

through Team Manager. Once

Centres have exported their athlete

need to attach it to an email and

the Registration Receipt Form can

Healthy Centre Tip

This month’s Medibank Healthy

Centre Tip…………make sure your

Centre attends the Medibank

Healthy Centre Forum in your Region!

LAQ is currently holding these

Regional Forums throughout the

State.

These Forums are designed so that all

Centres within the Region can meet

face to face with representatives

from LAQ and discuss any issues that

they may have. It also allows LAQ to

update the Region on any

outstanding issues within the Regions.

Forums have already been held in

Tropical North and North

Queensland Regions, with great

representation from Centres in both

Regions.

Details of upcoming Forums are as

follows:

• Central North Region

Date: 26th May

Venue: North Rockhampton

State High School

• Maranoa Region

Date: 1st June

Venue: St George RSL

We encourage all Centres within the

Regions to attend these Forums and

to have your say.

information regarding the Camp,

please contact Daniel in the LAQ

offer a great promotion for your

Centre in your area.

If Centres have any schools in their

area that you would like LAQ to visit,

Introduction to Coaching Courses

(ITC)

An ITC was held in Bundaberg on the

6th of April, with a total of 7 people

attending. Thanks to Rob Gardner

for presenting this course.

We are still seeking expressions of

interest from Winter Centres who are

interested in hosting an ITC Course

this season.

The aim of the ITC courses is to

provide parents, teachers and

interested sports people who have

little or no experience of the sport of

track and field with coaching

information and activities.

Introduction to Coaching courses

are designed for beginner coaches

to give a sound basic knowledge

and are particularly appropriate for

people coaching young athletes at

program

ATFCA coaching manual,

• implement a coaching session

appropriate to the target

group,

athletes safely,

each event through the use of

drills, technical skills and games,

Thank you to those Centres that

have returned the Intention to

Attend Form for the 2013 Medibank

proven that there is a growing

interest in the Conference and this

year could be the biggest

Conference we have held!

We remind Centres to lodge your

delegates and observers registrations

the closing date as detailed below;

we would hate to refuse a Centre’s

weekend.

LAQ is again providing financial

assistance to help Centres send

attendees to the 2013 Medibank

Firstly, LAQ is offering one (1) free

delegate Conference registration to

eligible to use the one (1) free

registration, the delegate must either

have been the new attendee at last

delegate that has not previously

attended an LAQ Conference.

Centres will still be required to cover

the accommodation and travel

costs. Centres will also need to

cover all costs for additional

delegates and observers

Secondly, LAQ will also subsidise all

Centres attending Conference on

the basis of distance of the Centre

from the conference venue.

Conference paperwork, including

the handbook, final agenda,

motions and postal voting forms will

be distributed from the LAQ Office

on Friday 17th May. Other important

dates to remember for the 2013 LAQ
