Teacher SuggestionsThis pack was created to get students excited about writing opinion pieces. This unit includes classroom posters to aid instruction, student reference guide for writer’s notebooks or binders, graphic organizers, student directions, three spring themed opinion prompts, rubric, student editing and revising checklist, and an opinion writing challenge. Also included is a modeled writing example to share with students or annotate together. Guiding questions are included to help guide your classroom discussion. Begin the lesson sharing the modeled writing to kick off discussions about this type of writing, or share after you have taught the elements of opinion writing.
Opinion Writing Challenge (Optional Twist):All prompts come with a challenge activity. You may choose to use the challenge for all prompts, none of the prompts, or one of the prompts. Instead of having students select their own opinion based on the prompt, you can assign them an opinion that they must write to. Copy and cut the cards for this challenge. Place them in a bag or basket. Have students select a card without looking. Whichever they pick, they must write to. Students may, or may not share the same opinion as the card that they selected. My students love this activity. This simple challenge gives students an opportunity to write from a different perspective.
Possible Ideas To Use These Prompts Include:*Keep in Writing Folders to take through the Writing Process*Independent Writing During Writer’s Workshop*Pair or Group Writing Activities*Formal or Informal Writing Assessments *Writing Centers*Bulletin Board: Display students opinion writing pieces and illustrations. Call your bulletin board, “Would You Rather?” and engage people to stop and vote for which they would rather do, based on the writings of your students. This makes a fun and interactive bulletin board for the hallway! (letters included for your board)

In my opinion, there is nothing better to do during the summer months than spending the day at the beach. When you go to the beach you can play in the water, build sandcastles, or just relax with a good book.
At the beach you can play in the warm water to cool yourself down from the hot weather. You can play games like Marco Polo, water tag, or have swimming races. Don’t forget to bring rafts to the beach, too. If you have a raft, you can lay out and float in the water. You can observe fish and rocks as you play in the water, too.
Another great thing about spending the day the beach in the summer, is that you can build sandcastles. Building sandcastles can be an activity you do alone or with others. Using your buckets and shovels, collect water to make the sand wet Go on an adventure hunt and collect rocks and shells to decorate your sand building creation. If you are really good at sand castle building, you might even want to enter a contest!
There is also time to relax at the beach, too! One of the best things about going to the beach during the summer, is that you can sit back in a beach chair and read your favorite book. If you go to the beach with a friend, you can each bring a book and swap books when you are done.
During the summer, you can do many different outdoor activities. I believe the best activity is going to the beach! There is so much to do there, that you would never be bored. You should ask your mom and dad if you can go to the beach this summer!
