This casual accessory harbors two secrets! Increases and decreases turn the tubular peyote rope into a two-sided necklace. Meanwhile, round seed beads played against cylinders result in multi-color waves that stand out from solid-color stripes.
24
designed by Susan Harle
To make this reversible necklace, select two colors (A and B) of 110 cylinder beads; the As will create the solid-color stripes on one side of the necklace, and the Bs will create the solid-color stripes
on the other side. Then select 110 seed beads in six accent colors for each side; these will create the multi-color waves that swell out from the solid-color stripes. Colors C–H should coordinate
with the B cylinders, and colors I–N should coordinate with the A cylinders.
You will be working the necklace in tubular peyote stitch (Basics), but the opening of your beadwork will have the shape of a flattened oval with a diagonal edge. This is caused by increases between the As and Bs on one side of the tube and decreases between the As and Bs on the other side of the tube. The increases and decreases form gentle “spines” that separate the two colorways of your necklace.
Change the tide of your wardrobe with one flip of this necklace

stepbystepCenter cabochon[1] Using E6000 adhesive, glue a 10 mm cabochon to the center of a 2 x 2-in. (5 x 5 cm) square of Ultra-suede. Allow the glue to dry completely.[2] Tie an overhand knot (Basics) at the end of 2 ft. (61 cm) of thread, and sew through the Ultrasuede from back to front, exiting next to the cabochon.[3] Work in beaded backstitch (Basics and photo a) around the cabochon using 150 seed beads. Sew through all the beads added in this round, sew down through the Ultrasuede from front to back, and then sew up from back to front, exiting along the outer edge of this round.[4] Work as in step 3 to add a second round of beaded backstitch using color A 110 cylinder beads, and then work a third round using color C 90 three-cut beads. Sew through all the beads in the last round, and end the thread by tying a knot on the back of the Ultrasuede.[5] Trim the Ultrasuede close to the beadwork, making sure you don’t cut any of the threads. [6] Place the cabochon in the center of a small piece of cardboard, and trace around it. Cut out the shape, and trim it
2 mm smaller than the cabochon. Using white tacky glue, glue the cardboard shape to the back of the Ultrasuede, and press the cabochon and beadwork firmly onto the cardboard. This helps the beads to lie flat. Set the cabochon aside.
Filigree base[1] Place a 47 mm round filigree on a 4 x 4-in. (10 x 10 cm) square of Ultrasuede, making sure there is enough room to add the 16 mm charm to the same piece of Ultrasuede at the bottom of the filigree.[2] Tie an overhand knot at the end of 2 ft. (61 cm) of thread, and sew through the Ultrasuede from back to front, exiting near the tip of a petal in the center flower of the filigree (photo b). Tack the filigree to the Ultrasuede at each petal of the flower. Continue to tack the filigree to the Ultrasuede in places where your thread will be hidden, working your way out to the outside edge of the filigree. Be sure to tack down every V in the outer ring of the filigree. End the thread as before.[3] Tie an overhand knot at the end of a comfortable length of thread, and sew through the Ultrasuede from back to front, exiting along the outside edge of the filigree.

stepbystepToggle bar[1] On 1 yd. (.9 m) of Fireline, work in ladder stitch (Basics) to make a ladder of four 6 mm bugle beads, leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail. Form the ladder into a ring (Basics).[2] Pick up three 3 mm bicone crystals, and sew back through the bugle bead your thread exited at the start of this step (figure 1, a–b). Pick up three 3 mms, and sew back through the same bugle bead and the third 3 mm picked up at the start of this step (b–c).[3] Pick up two 3 mms, and sew through the next bugle bead in the ring (c–d). Pick up two 3 mms, and sew through the nearest 3 mm, bugle bead, and 3 mm in the previous stitch (d–e). Continue through the first two 3 mms picked up at the start of this step, the bugle bead, and the following 3 mm (e–f).
[4] Repeat step 3 (f–g).[5] Pick up two 3 mms, and sew through the bugle bead your thread just exited. Pick up two 3 mms, sew through the nearest 3 mm in the previous stitch, sew back through the same bugle bead, and continue through the second 3 mm picked up at the start of this step (g–h).[6] Repeat step 3 (h–i).[7] Pick up a 3 mm, and sew through the nearest 3 mm, bugle bead, and 3 mm in the first stitch (i–j). Pick up a 3 mm, and sew through the nearest 3 mm, bugle bead, and 3 mm in the last stitch. Continue through the first 3 mm picked up in this step (j–k). [8] Pick up an 110 cylinder bead; sew through the next 3 mm along this end of the toggle bar. Repeat this stitch to add a cylinder between all of the six 3 mms along this end. Sew through the beadwork to repeat this step on the other end. End the thread and tail (Basics).
Wheel components[1] On 21⁄2 yd. (2.3 m) of Fireline, pick up a repeating pattern of a cylinder and a bugle bead three times, leaving a 12-in. (30 cm) tail. Sew through the first cylinder picked up to form a triangle (figure 2, a–b).[2] Pick up a repeating pattern of a cylinder and a bugle bead twice, and then pick up a cylinder. Sew through the nearest bugle bead from the previous stitch and the first cylinder picked up in this step (b–c). Repeat this step three more times (c–d).[3] Pick up a cylinder, and sew through the nearest bugle bead in the first stitch (d–e). Pick up a cylinder, a bugle bead, and a cylinder, and sew through the nearest bugle bead in the last stitch and the next cylinder, bugle bead, cylinder, and bugle bead in this triangle (e–f). Sew through the first cylinder again.[2] Working in tubular peyote stitch (Basics), pick up a cylinder, skip the next cylinder in the ring, and sew through the following cylinder. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and step up through the first cylinder added in this round.[3] Work two rounds of tubular peyote using 150 seed beads, and step up after each round. Use a firm tension, and snug up the beads to form a cup. Sew through the beadwork to exit an up-bead from step 1. Place a 10 mm rivoli in the bezel with the back of the stone resting on the beads added in this step and the previous step.[4] Work two rounds of tubular peyote on the front of the bezel using 150s, and step up.
[5] Work the following stitches to begin shaping the opening of the bezel into a rectangle:• Work two peyote stitches with one Charlotte each. Sew through the next two 150s to exit the following up-bead. This completes a short side of the rectangle and a corner. • Work three peyote stitches with one Charlotte each, and sew through the next two 150s. This completes a long side of the rectangle and another corner. • Repeat all the stitches in this step to complete the last two sides and corners of the rectangle, and step up through the first 150 picked up in this step. [6] Sew through the beadwork to exit a cylinder added in step 2 that corresponds to a corner created in the previous step. Your needle should be pointing toward the short side of the rectangular opening (figure 1, point a).
Skirt[1] Work the stitches on the following page to create round 1 of the rivoli skirt, which flairs out around the bezel:
The original La Peregrina necklace was designed by Cartier and incorporates a large natural pearl drop, diamonds, rubies, and cultured pearls. This stunning interpretation uses beads that are slightly more attainable and combines peyote stitch, herringbone, netting, and brick stitch.
DESIGN NOTE:La Peregrina means “the pilgrim” and actually refers to the pear-shaped pearl drop, which originally weighed 55.95 carats or 11.2 grams. Consider attaching a larger pearl than the one shown in this necklace to be true to the original.

Position the thread between the second and third As in the ring, and then gently snug up the thread to tighten the beads of the cell to the ring. This process will be referred to as
