Introduction

Another name for Cat Street is Lascar Row. There are many antique shops and booths. The goods and products sold here are called “Mouse goods”. Westerners nicknamed those hawkers selling “Mouse goods” “Cats”.

Lascar Row became famous in the 1960’s.

Lascar Row is a popular antique market. A place for well-off Hongkongers and Wes

terners to shop.

Cat Street in the past

After the Japanese stationed in Hong Kong , many blockhouses and old Chinese buildings consisting of brothels and mariner apartments sprang up in the coastal area of Upper Lascar Row

There were many sailors. When the sailors were not on duty, they usually stayed at Upper Lascar Row and therefore, Upper Lascar Row became the center for them.

Cat Street today

At the end of the 18th century, many Indians brought their used things to sell on Cat Street .The street became a Hong-Kong-style flea market. Real antiques, fake antiques, and even books were sold here.

At the end of 19th century, Cat Street was split into the Upper part and the Lower part. Today, the Lower part of the Lascar Row has disappeared, because that area was re-structured in the 70’s. Lok Ku Road was built and was extended into the Lower Lascar Row. So, the present Cat Street only consists of the Upper Lascar Row.

Cat Street today

At present, the Upper Lascar Row and the Lower Lascar Row are combined to form the Lascar Row. Most of the shops there sell Chinese antiques and handicrafts, some of which are quite luxurious.
