Birth Defects Physical or biochemical abnormality that is present at birth and that may be inherited or the result of environmental
influence.
**About 3% of babies in the United States are born with a major birth defect.
Types: • Structural Defects
– Cleft palate, Club foot, Spina Bifida
• Functional Defects– Down syndrome, Muscular dystrophy

Infertility• It’s a problem that effects both men and
women.– 1/3 of the time is male: 1/3 of the time female
• 10-15% of couples in the US are infertile• About 85-90% infertility cases are treated
with drug therapy or surgical procedures.– Of those who seek medical intervention,
approximately 65% give birth.
Causes• Male Infertility:
– Abnormal sperm production or function, problems with delivery of sperm, overexposure to environmental factors, and damage related to cancer and its treatment.
• Female Infertility:– Ovulation disorder, uterine or cervical
abnormalities, fallopian tube damage or blockage, Endometriosis, early menopause, pelvic adhesions, thyroid problems, cancer, and medications.
