Archbishop Schnurr thanks the faithful here at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for our generous participation in the 2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Our parish pledged $29,433.01 to the Appeal, which is 138.49% of our parish goal. This tremendous response is a testament to the generosity of our parish community. A special thank-you to the families that participated in this year’s Appeal.
Lay Ministry Formation Opportunities in Dayton: Grow in faith, knowledge and skills! The Archdiocese of Cincinnati Lay Pastoral Ministry Program equips busy adult Catholics with the skills and knowledge needed to become missionary disciples, serving families, parishes and communities more effectively. Non-degreed Certificate classes include topics such as: Scripture, Doctrine, Christology, Social Media/Evangelization, Liturgy and History. We are currently meeting with people interested in joining classes beginning in January at the Pilarczyk Center. The program is designed to fit into a busy adult schedule with Saturday morning and afternoon classes. Is God calling you to something new? Call Deacon Hal Belcher at 419-305-5486 for more information or to set up an interview.
The School supplies drive was a big success thanks to the generosity of people like you who care for those less fortunate. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart for caring and helping with donations, time and
energy! This was the best year ever for the Hispanic Ministries of St John the Baptist Catholic Church! We couldn’t have made it without you! Sincerely, Sofia Marquez

MISSIONARY COOPERATION PLAN [MCP] Each year, every parish in our Archdiocese is assigned a missionary group to support. This year, we have been assigned the Institute of the Incarnate Word. Next weekend, September 5-6, Father Domingo Avellaneda, a missionary in Lithuania, will preach at our three weekend Masses. A special second collection will be taken to support their missionary work. Please make out all checks to St. John the Baptist Church. We will send one parish check to the missions.

SpiritualCATHOLIC UPDATE for September features; POPE FRANCIS AND THE ENVIRONMENT Caring For Our Common Home, by Michael Wright. “As a father, I try to impart my wisdom to my kids. My advice often falls
on deaf ears. Sound familiar? In “On care for Our Common Home” (Laudato Si’), Pope Francis offers us, his spiritual children, wisdom about caring for the environment – the first encyclical to do so in the Church’s history.” “In it he connects the environment with basic values of life, love of God and neighbor, family, and the common good.” Michael brings us an overview of the Popes writing in very clear and easy to understand terms and leads us to ask, How is care of the earth a reflection of my faith?” This is a must read edition of the Catholic Update, grab a copy from the book rack in the Narthex on the way home to find out more. If you would like copies of past Catholic Updates, please contact Deacon Chuck Wright at the Parish Office.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with those serving our country at this time; Travis Meeks (Air Force), Nathan McKitrick (Marines), Tabitha McKitrick
(Navy), David Nartker (Navy), Bryan Bernhold (Air Force) and Brad Staddon (Army) and with their loved ones at home. We pray for a safe homecoming and that the world may one day be at peace.. Please let the office (937-667-3419) know if you would like your loved one(s) listed by name here. We would be happy to pray for them by name.
“We need to let ourselves be imbued with the light of the Holy Spirit, to introduce us into the Truth of God... Let us ask ourselves what steps we are taking so that our faith directs our whole existence. Do not be a “part-time” Christian, at certain moments, in certain circumstances and in certain choices. Be Christian at all times! The truth of Christ, that the Holy Spirit teaches us and gives us, always and forever involves our daily lives. Let us invoke the Spirit often, to guide us on the path of Christ’s disciples.” – Pope Francis Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves. (James 1:22) Imagine a father who suddenly recognizes how the excess time he spends with technology has negatively affected his young daughter. He goes on to chide himself and our culture for being too busy and the need for us to be present to one another. Well said. But he never says what he is going to do about it. He doesn’t seem to have an action plan. We’ve all done the same thing in our lives. As we recognize an area of our life that is out of balance, we feel guilty about it, and may even promise ourselves that we are going to make the change, but never get around to doing anything about it. It is only when we take time to prayerfully reflect on our resistance, our fear, our insecurity and turn to God that we know that we are serious about making the change. (Excerpts from “Living Faith,” August 2015)
Help CenterHelp us Fill the Banquet Hall. The St. Louis 2015 YNIA Group this year have decided to set a goal of filling the Banquet Hall floor with food and other needed items. Once we have reached this goal, we will donate all items to the Miami County Food
Pantries. A box has been created and placed in the Narthex. This box will need to be filled 252 times for our goal to be reached. We want to thank those who have already begun supporting our project We will continue to keep you updated on our progress and thank you for your support. Zach and Payton Bonifas, Sam Fairbanks, Adam Grieshop. Meredith Richters, Matthew Rindler, John Miller and Teri Iverson.
