Carolina Heads To Annapolis To Take On Duke For Third Time This Season: The University of North Carolina men’s lacrosse team returns to action this Sunday when the sixth-ranked Tar Heels meet third-ranked Duke, a team which has not lost in almost two months, in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship. Game time is 2:00 p.m. at Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. with the United States NavalAcademy serving as the host institution. The game will be nationally televised on ESPNU with Dave Ryan doing the play-by-play and Quint Kessenich handling the analysis. The Tar Heels versus Blue Devils matchup will be the second quarterfinal game at Annapolis Sunday as No. 1- ranked Virginia plays host to No. 8-ranked Johns Hopkins in the first game at 12 Noon. The Tar Heels (12-5) are the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament while the ACC champion Blue Devils (14-3) are seeded third. Seven of the top eight seeds advanced in the first round of the NCAA Championship as No. 1 Virginia, No. 2 Syracuse, No. 3 Duke, No. 4 Princeton, No. 5 Cornell, No. 6 North Carolina and No. 8 Johns Hopkins remain in the field. The only first round upset victim was No. 7 seed Notre Dame which lost at home 7-3 to unseed- ed Maryland. The Blue Devils received an at-large bid to the Tournament and only one automatic qualifer (Cornell) remains in the field of eight. UNC was one of nine at-large teams in the field at the start of the tournament and the fifth highest seed of the at-large selections. Bitter’s Record-Setting Day AgainstThe Retrievers: Sophomore Billy Bitter tied theschool record for goals scored in a game witheight against the Retrievers in the NCAA firstround. He now shares the University record withMac Ford and Jason Wade. Ford scored eightgoals against Adelphi on April 21, 1984 and Wadescored eight goals against Maryland on March 23,1996.

Bitter Almost Matches Wade’sShooting Record: Billy Bitter scored his eightgoals against UMBC on his first eight shots of thegame before having his ninth and final shotblocked by the defense in an empty net situationwith 1:57 to play. When Wade scored his eightgoals in 1996 against Maryland, he took only eightshots in the game, finishing with a 100 percentshooting average.

Bitter’s Nine Points In The UNCRecord Book: With one assist verus UMBC,Bitter finished with nine points overall, the 16thtime in UNC history a Tar Heel has totaled nine ormore points in a game.

Most Goals In An ACC Tournament GameSince 2000:The University of North Carolina men'slacrosse squad thrived on its highest scoring outputin the ACC Tournament since 2000 as the Tar Heelsdefeated Maryland 16-10 in the ACC Tournamentsemifinals April 24. The 16 goals were the mostscored by the Tar Heels in ACC Tournament playsince April 21, 2000 when Virginia defeated the TarHeels 17-16 in a tournament semifinal game inCollege Park, Md. in double overtime.

The 16 goals were also the most UNC hasscored against any ACC opponent in any regular-season, ACC Tournament game or NCAATournament match since April 21, 2000 whenCarolina lost 17-16 to UVa in the ACC Tournamentsemifinals.

The last time UNC scored more than 16 goalsagainst an ACC opponent was April 19, 1996 whenCarolina defeated Duke 18-8 in the ACCTournament semifinals at Charlottesville, Va.

Tar Heels Rack Up Most Goals Against TerpsIn 13 Years: The 16 goals in the April 24 ACCTournament semifinal were the most scored by theTar Heels against Maryland since March 23, 1996when Carolina downed the Terps 17-16 at FetzerField behind an eight-goal game by Jason Wade.

Wade scored eightgoals on eightshots in that match.

Going into thegame on April 24,Maryland wasranked seventh inthe nation in scor-ing defense, allow-ing only 7.31 goalsper game.

The 16 goalswere the most allowed by Maryland this year. Theprevious high was 13 in a 13-10 loss to Georgetownon February 21.

The Terps have allowed double figures in goalsonly five times in 16 games this year. They allowedundefeated Notre Dame only three goals in theNCAA Tournament first round last Sunday.

UNC Explodes Offensively Against Terps:The Tar Heels shot with great accuracy in the ACCTournament semifinals April 24 against Maryland inscoring 16 goals on only 39 shots, including 24 whichwere on net. The 16 goals tied for the third highesttotal Carolina has scored in a game in 2009, trailingonly the 20 Carolina scored against DenverFebruary 14, the 19 against Detroit Mercy March 3and equaling the 16 it had against Robert MorrisFebruary 7.

UNC has scored in double figures in 13 of 17games this season.

Carolina had four different players score threegoals apiece in the ACC semifinals as sophomoreattackman Billy Bitter, senior midfielder Ben Hunt,senior attackman Bart Wagner and junior attackmanGavin Petracca all racked up hat tricks.

It was the second time this year UNC had fourplayers record hat tricks in the same game. OnFebruary 14, Gavin Petracca had four goals and BillyBitter, Bart Wagner and Ben Hunt all had three goalseach as the Tar Heels defeated Denver 20-7.

Double Digits In Seven Straight Games:Carolina has now scored in double digits in sevensuccessive games. That’s the longest streak of dou-ble digit scoring games by the Tar Heels since theyopened the 2007 season by scoring 10 or more inthe first seven games of the season. The last timeUNC has scored in double figures in more than sixgames in a row came in 1995 and 1996 when theHeels finished 2005 with back-to-back double digitgames and started 2006 with five in succession.

The last time UNC has scored 10 or more goalsin more than six games in a row in one season was1993 when the Tar Heels scored in double digits intheir final 10 contests of the campaign.

The Tar Heels have scored 10 or more goals in agame in 13 of 17 games this season.

The last time UNC scored 10 or more goals in agame in at least 13 games in a season was 1996when Carolina scored in double figures 14 times in17 games.

Only Navy (9), Notre Dame (7), Duke (8) andMaryland (7) held the Tar Heels to single digits ingoals this season.

Bitter & Walterhoefer Named All-ACC: For thesecond straight year and only the sixth time in the last13 seasons, UNC had two players named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team. A year ago, mid-fielder Ben Hunt and goalkeeper Grant Zimmermanwere named to the team.

This year, sophomore attackman Billy Bitter andsenior midfielder Shane Walterhoefer were namedto the All-ACC squad.

Bitter, a native of Stowe, Vt., leads the Tar Heelsin goals with 46, in assists with 23 and in points with69. He is third on the team in ground balls with 58.

With 41 points, Petraccahas now matched his career high of 41 points in aseason he initially set in the 2007 season.

Petracca has 107 points in his career. Hereached the 100-point plateau with a goal againstHofstra on April 18 with 3:16 left in the third quarter.

Wagner Passes 30-GoalMark For First Time: BartWagner has now scored 35 goalsin the 2009 season and he joinsBilly Bitter and Sean Delaney as a30-plus goal scorers this season.Sean Delaney is third on the teamwith 32 goals behind Bitter with 46and Wagner with 35.

The 35 goals are the mostWagner has scored in a single sea-son in his career. His previous bestwas the 23 he had in 2007.Wagner has 50 points this seasonand he has exceeded his previoussingle season high of 44 points in2007. He and Bitter have com-bined to give UNC a pair of 50-point performers in 2009.

Wagner was UNC’s leadingscorer in 2006, 2007 and 2008 with29, 44 and 34 points, respectively.

totaled 18 points on 11 goals and seven assists. The18 points are the most by a freshman midfielder atCarolina since Sean Burke had 19 points in 2007.

Walterhoefer Sets New UNC Season RecordFor Face-Off Victories In 2009: With 22 face-offwins against UMBC in the NCAA first round, seniorShane Walterhoefer has now won 254 face-offs in2009, extending his own school mark for face-offswon in a season. Earlier this season he shattered hisown school record for face-offs won in a seasonwhich had been 222 in 2007.

Walterhoefer Ranks Fourth In NCAA HistoryIn Face-Off Wins: Shane Walterhoefer has nowwon 708 faceoffs in his career. That is the fourthmost in NCAA Division I history.

The only players with more face-off wins are AlexSmith of Delaware (2004-07) who won 1,022, SteveShaw of Delaware (1983-86) who won 838 andSteve Vecchione of Johns Hopkins (1990-93) whowon 722.

Kevin Frew ranks second in UNC history in face-off wins with 446 from 2001-04.

Walterhoefer Moves To Seventh In NCAASenior Bobby McAuley, a team captain, had a career-highthree assists as the Tar Heels eked out a one-goal winagainst Ohio State on April 11. His 10 assists gives UNCsix players in double figures in assists this season.

Sean Delaney has scored 32 goals, the most by a UNC mid-fielder since Ryan Wade had 45 goals in 1996.

Senior Bart Wagner has 35 goals this season, the most in a season in his career.He now ranks ninth in UNC history in career assists with 66. He reached the 50-point plateau on the season with five points against UMBC.

UNC Plays Before Largest Crowd In SchoolHistory: When UNC played Virginia at GiantsStadium in the Meadowlands on April 4, the TarHeels played before the largest crowd to ever watchthem compete in school history. The official atten-dance for the tripleheader which composed the BigCity Classic was 22,308.

The previous largest crowd UNC had played infront of was 20,117 when Carolina lost to Syracuse13-12 in the 1993 NCAA championship game atByrd Stadium in College Park, Md.

The Ground Ball Story: Carolina’s 2009 teamhas won the ground ball battle in all 17 games it hasplayed this season. The Tar Heels have a groundball margin of 754-554 over their opponents. UNCleads the NCAA in ground balls per game with 46.82.

The All-Time Home Record: With a 9-2 homerecord in 2009, UNC now has an all-time home markof 233-113-2 (.672).

That record includes games played at FetzerField, Kenan Stadium, Henry Stadium and FinleyField.

The All-Time Overall Record: Since the TarHeels played their first varsity game in 1949, NorthCarolina has compiled a 396-253-2 record, a win-ning percentage of .610.

Another Win Over The Blue Jays: On SeniorDay at Fetzer Field March 28, the Tar Heels reward-ed 11 seniors and head coach Joe Breschi with aheartstopping 10-9 overtime win over JohnsHopkins. It was Breschi’s 100th career coaching vic-tory and allowed the 11 seniors to go out with a vic-tory in their final regular-season home match atFetzer Field.

The Tar Heels trailed only once in the game at 2-1 and after taking a 3-2 lead with 5:40 left in the firsthalf on a Billy Bitter goal they either led or were tiedthe rest of the way. Nevertheless, the Tar Heels wereunable to shake the Blue Jays even after taking a 6-2 lead with 13:07 to play in the third quarter.

Eventually, the Blue Jays scored the final twogoals of regulation to force overtime and Hopkinshad the first possession of overtime before UNC’sRyan Flanagan caused a turnover that gave the ballto Carolina.

UNC cashed in on its first possession of overtimeas Billy Bitter fed Sean Delaney for the winning goalwith 1:31 left in the first overtime period.

Bitter, Delaney, Gavin Petracca and Bart Wagnereach had two goals for the Tar Heels in the win. Bitterand Petracca each had two assists for the Tar Heels.

Three Straight Wins Over Hopkins: The TarHeels have recorded regular-season wins overJohns Hopkins in each of the last three seasons.The last time the Tar Heels won three straight overthe perennial national title contenders came from1990 through 1994 when the Heels won six in a rowover the Blue Jays, five regular-season games(1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994) as well as a win inthe 1993 NCAA semifinals.

The 10-9 overtime win on March 28 wasCarolina’s first win over the Blue Jays at Fetzer Fieldsince April 3, 1993 when No. 1 Carolina defeated No.3 Johns Hopkins 14-9. UNC’s home win overHopkins in 2007 was in a game played at KenanStadium.

UNC has now upset higher-ranked teams fromJohns Hopkins three years in a row after losing to theBlue Jays 13 times in a row before that from 1995through 2006.

A Rare Overtime Win For The Tar Heels: UNCwas only 1-6 in its last seven overtime games datingback to the 2003 season before emerging with thewin March 28 over Johns Hopkins.

The overtime win over the Blue Jays was the firstin extra time since the Tar Heels beat Duke 10-9 onan overtime goal by Lance Zimmerman at KoskinenStadium in Durham, N.C. on March 20, 2004. In thefive years since then, Carolina had only played in twoovertime games, losing to Virginia in both 2007 and2008.

The Largest Crowd In Seven Years:The gameagainst Duke in the ACC Tournament finals wasplayed before a crowd of 6,112 fans, the largesthome crowd for a UNC game since 6,235 fanswatched the Tar Heels beat UMBC 15-11 on April 13,2002 at Kenan Stadium.

Carolina In One-Goal Games This Year:Carolina is 3-2 in one-goal games in 2009 after hav-ing lost seven of its last eight one-goal games head-ing into this season.

UNC had been 1-7 in one-goal games beginningwith a 10-9 home loss to Maryland on March 27,2004 and extending through an 8-7 loss in the firstround of the NCAA Tournament to Navy at FetzerField on May 10, 2008.

Carolina’s only one-goal win in that span came onFebruary 23, 2008 when UNC won at Denver 6-5.

Sean Delaney has delivered the game-winninggoal in two of the three one-goal victories in 2009.

The junior midfielder scored with 4:50 left in the fourthquarter to lift the Tar Heels past Navy 9-8 onFebruary 20 at Fetzer Field. He then delivered againMarch 28 with his goal with 1:31 left in the first over-time as UNC beat Johns Hopkins 10-9 at FetzerField.

Billy Bitter had the eventual game-winning goalwith 3:49 to play as the Tar Heels beat Ohio State 12-11 on April 11.

UNC Exceeds 2008 Win Total April 11:Carolina improved to 9-4 with its win over Ohio StateApril 11 in Baltimore, Md. and in the process exceed-ed its win total from the entire 2008 season whenUNC finished 8-6.

Eight Wins Before The End of March: The2009 Tar Heel team was the first Carolina team tohave eight wins before the end of the month ofMarch since the 1993 team which was 8-0 on March31, 1993.

Carolina was 8-3 on March 31 of this season.Carolina’s eighth win came over Johns Hopkins onMarch 28.

Seniors Now 9-2 At Home In 2009: Carolina’sClass of 2009, which includes nine seniors and tworedshirt juniors, has recorded a home campaign of 9-2 with the only two losses coming against Duke, bothat Kenan Stadium. Carolina did not lose at FetzerField in the 2009 season, going 7-0. UNC was 1-0at Henry Stadium and 1-2 at Kenan Stadium.

The Tar Heels Featured On ESPNU For SixthTime This Season: When UNC plays Duke in theNCAA Tournament quarterfinals it will be its sixthappearance on ESPNU this year and its eighth liveTV appearance in 18 games overall.

Carolina played four of its 14 regular-seasongames on national TV on ESPNU in 2009. TheMarch 14 game against Duke was UNC’s ESPNUdebut of the 2009 campaign, then the Tar Heelsplayed Maryland on the network on March 21, JohnsHopkins on ESPNU on March 28, Virginia on April 4and then UMBC in the NCAA first round on May 9.

UNC also played Notre Dame this season on theCBS College Sports Network and its ACC champi-onship game against Duke was televised live on FoxSports Carolinas. A total of seven UNC games havebeen televised live this season heading into theNCAA Tournament quarterfinals.

Tar Heels Reward Breschi With 100th CareerWin Against Johns Hopkins: New UNC headcoach Joe Breschi has started his Tar Heel career12-5, a winning percentage of .706. On March 28,his first Tar Heel unit rewarded the 1990 UNC grad-uate with his 100th career coaching victory, a 10-9win over Johns Hopkins.

Now in his 12th year as a head coach, includingthe first 11 campaigns at Ohio State where he was92-63, Breschi is 104-68 overall (.605) as UNC pre-pares to meet the Retrievers.

Carolina Beats A Top 10 Team: With the over-time win over No. 6 Johns Hopkins on March 28,Carolina recorded a win over its highest-rankedopponent since beating Cornell and Notre Damewhen they were ranked fifth in successive weeks onMarch 2 and March 8 of 2008.

On April 18, UNC beat Hofstra 13-8 when thePride was ranked sixth.

Altogether, UNC is 7-5 when facing nationall-ranked opponents this season.

During the losing streak, UNC went 0-16 in ACCregular-season games, 0-5 in ACC Tournamentgames and 0-1 in NCAA Tournament gamesagainst ACC foes.

Since the beginning of the 1997 season, UNC is8-47 in games against ACC opponents, going 7-32in ACC regular-season games, 1-13 in ACCTournament games and 0-2 in NCAA Tournamentgames against ACC foes.

But that, as they say, all those statistics are nowall part of history.

Tar Heels Were Off To Fastest Start Since2002: With a win over Detroit Mercy March 3 by a19-4 score, North Carolina started the 2009 cam-paign with a record of 6-0. The last time UNC start-ed a season with six straight wins was 2002. The TarHeels finished that season 8-5 after going 2-5 over itslast seven games of the season. This team hasresponded differently, however, as it has gone 6-5

against a brutally tough schedule since opening theseason with six wins.

Notre Dame snapped the Tar Heels’ 2009 six-match winning streak by beating UNC 9-7 on March8.

The last time a Tar Heel team had opened itscampaign with seven straight wins was 1993 whenCarolina started at 9-0. That Tar Heel team went onto play in the NCAA championship game, the lasttime a UNC team advanced to the Memorial DayWeekend final 4 in men’s lacrosse.

Zimmerman Named Lowe’s Senior CLASSAward Finalist: Senior goalkeeper GrantZimmerman was one of 10 players tapped as final-ists for the 2009 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Tobe eligible for the award, a student-athlete must beclassified as an NCAA Division I senior and havenotable achievements in four areas of excellence:Classroom, Character, Community, andCompetition.

This is the second straight year the Tar Heelshave had a finalist for the award. A year ago, TarHeel senior midfielder Fletcher Gregory was one ofthe 10 finalists for the prestigious national award.

The Starting Attack: UNC’s starting attack unitof senior Bart Wagner, junior Gavin Petracca and

sophomore Billy Bitter is currently averaging 9.41points per game as a unit in the season’s first 17games.

Bitter leads the way for the Tar Heels with 69points while Wagner has 50 points and Petracca has41. Bitter leads the team in goals scored with 46while senior attackman Bart Wagner has 35 and jun-ior midfielder Sean Delaney is third with 32 goals.

Other double digit goal scorers are GavinPetracca with 25, Ben Hunt with 17, Jimmy Dunsterwith 11 and Cryder DiPietro with 10.

Bitter has the team’s lead in assists with 23 whilejunior midfielder Sean Burke has 18. Petracca isalso in double figures in assists with 16 while BartWagner has 15 assists, Ben Hunt has 12 assists andBobby McAuley has 10.

Four 20-Goal Scorers In 2009: Four Tar Heelplayers have reached the 20-goal mark in 2009 andin only 17 games. Billy Bitter leads the way with 46goals, followed by Bart Wagner with 35, SeanDelaney with 32 and Gavin Petracca with 25.

In 14 games a year ago, UNC had only one play-er reach the 20-goal plateau – Ben Hunt with 21.

The Passing Game In High Gear As Wagnerand Delaney Scorch Mountain Hawks: Playingagainst a zone defense February 28 versus Lehigh,UNC had one of its most successful passing gamesin years as the Tar Heels scored 14 goals on anamazing 13 assists, 92.9 percent of the goals theyscored in the contest. The Tar Heels rank secondnationally in assists per game at 7.88.

Bart Wagner had a career-high seven points inthat game on four goals and three assists, exceed-ing his previous high total of six points in a gameagainst Marist on March 18, 2008.

Junior midfielder Sean Delaney had a career-highfour goals in the game against the Mountain Hawks.Delaney has scored 32 goals so far in 2009. In just17 games this season, he has now passed the 22tallies he had in 2007 and 2008 combined by a totalof 10 goals.

Delaney’s four-goal game was his best as a TarHeel as he bettered the hat trick he had against Navyon February 20, 2009 and the three goals he hadagainst Providence on April 21, 2007. Delaney alsohad hat tricks on March 21 of this season againstMaryland, on April 18 of this campaign versusHofstra and on April 26 of this season against Duke.

In the win over Navy earlier this season, Delaneyscored back-to-back goals in the final six minutes ofthe game to rally the Tar Heels from an 8-7 deficit toa 9-8 win over the Midshipmen.

Howard, Locke and McCall Star AgainstDetroit Mercy: Carolina’s 19-4 win over DetroitMercy on March 3 allowed head coach Joe Breschito play his reserves the entire second half. Thisresulted in some new career-high efforts for severalTar Heels.

Junior attackman Joe Howard had the first hattrick of his career and he finished the game with apersonal best four points.

Senior attackman Matthias McCall also had acareer-high four points with a two-goal and two-assist effort.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Locke saw thefirst-ever action of his career, playing the last 18:52 ofthe match. Locke proved himself worthy of hischance at playing time by turning in a six-save effortwhile allowing only two goals. He also had twoground balls.

Walterhoefer On The Career Charts: ShaneWalterhoefer has now won a school record 708 face-offs in his career. He earned the 600th face-off vic-tory of his career when he won the opening face-offof the second quarter against against Johns Hopkinson March 28.

He set the University career record in the finalgame of the 2008 season versus Navy in the NCAATournament first round, passing Kevin Frew’s previ-ous career record of 446 face-off victories.

The Offensive Output: Through the opening 17games of the 2009 season, North Carolina is aver-aging 12.59 goals per game. That compares to anaverage of just 10.0 goals per game scored by theTar Heels in 14 games in 2008.

Carolina has scored 214 goals this season, themost by UNC since the 1996 team scored 260 goals.

UNC’s 12.59 goals scored average is the highestfor a Tar Heel team since the 1996 team scored15.29 goals per game.

200 Goals In A Season: When Carolina scored

15 goals against UMBC May 9, the Tar Heelsreached the 200-goal plateau for the first time sincethe 1996 team scored 260 goals. Billy Bitter scoredCarolina’s 200th goal of the season with 10:45remaining in the first quarter against the Retrievers.

Over the last 27 seasons, the Tar Heels havescored at least 200 goals in a season only nine times– 1987 (202), 1989 (240), 1990 (243), 1991 (253),1992 (214), 1993 (247), 1995 (222), 1996 (260) and2009 (214).

Walt Wins At Least 20 Face-Offs Again VersusRetievers: Shane Walterhoefer's 22 face-off winsagainst UMBC May 9 marked only the fifth time in TarHeel lore that a player has won as many as 20 face-offs in a game.

Walterhoefer has done it three of the other fourtimes as well. He set the school record with 23 face-off wins against Ohio State on April 12, 2008 and healso won 20 against Hofstra on April 19, 2008 and 20against Providence on March 11, 2009. The other20-face-off win occasion came when ToddOudemool won 22 against Towson on May 13,1989.

Walterhoefer Ties School Record For GroundBalls In a Game Versus Providence: ShaneWalterhoefer's 15 ground balls against ProvidenceMarch 11 marked the sixth time in school history aplayer has achieved that school record total.Walterhoefer has accomplished it twice now. The fol-lowing players have claimed 15 ground balls in agame: Michael Burnett against NC State on May 2,1981; Todd Oudemool against Towson on May 17,1989; Jude Collins against Duke on April 23, 1995;Jude Collins against Virginia on April 6, 1986; ShaneWalterhoefer against Ohio State on April 12, 2008;and Shane Walterhoefer against Providence onMarch 11, 2009.

Walt’s Career Total On NCAA Charts: ShaneWalterhoefer has now won a school record 708 face-offs in his career.

With 22 wins against UMBC on May 9 he main-tained his spot as No. 4 on the all-time NCAADivision I career chart.

Walterhoefer is currently 15th in NCAA historyand third in UNC history in face-off winning percent-age at .616. The school record for face-off winningpercentage is held by Jude Collins (1993-96) at .668.

He has attempted the fifth most face-offs in NCAAhistory with 1,150. He has attempted 411 more face-offs than any other player in UNC history.

Walterhoefer Now Second On The UNCGround Ball Chart: With his eight ground ballsagainst UMBC on May 7, Shane Walterhoefer main-tained his spot in second place in career ground ballsat UNC. Walterhoefer currently has 378 ground ballsin his career.

Walterhoefer is now ranked seventh in groundballs in NCAA history. He is second in Carolina his-tory behind only Jude Collins (1993-96) who had412. Collins ranks sixth in NCAA history in groundballs.

Walterhoefer ranks ninth in NCAA history inground balls per game at 6.75. He is currently aheadof Jude Collins’ school record pace of 6.54 groundballs per game. Collins ranks 11th in NCAA history.

Riding And Clearing: Riding and clearing arean essential part of the game and the Tar Heels aredoing a much better job of accomplishing both in2009 when compared with the past few seasons.This year’s group is clearing successfully at an .842clip compared to .728 in 2008. UNC has also limitedopponents to success on only .734 percent of clearing attempts. A year ago, opponents cleared at an.850 clip.

Clearing A Key To Win Over Johns Hopkins:One of the key factors in UNC’s win March 28 overJohns Hopkins was the team’s ability to successfullyclear the ball. The Tar Heels lost possession onlyone time on a failed clear in the match.

UNC cleared successfully 16 of 17 times. Theonly failed clear came 21 seconds into the matchwhen the Heels went offside on their first clearingattempt of the game.

Zimmerman In The Net: Despite seeing his col-lege career end with a knee injury against VirginiaApril 4, senior goalkeeper Grant Zimmerman beganthe week with the nation’s eighth best goals againstaverage at 7.56. A year ago, Zimmerman had a 9.42goals against average per contest and he was in themidst of a terrific season when he was injuredagainst the Cavaliers.

Zim On The Career Saves Chart: With 105saves this season, Grant Zimmerman improved hiscareer save total to 504. That is the fourth most inschool history.

Tar Heels Explode For 20 Goals:The 20 goalsUNC scored against Denver on February 14 werethe most scored by UNC since a 27-7 win overPfeiffer on April 26, 2001 at Henry Stadium.

It marked the most goals scored by UNC againstan NCAA Division I opponent since April 16, 1997when UNC won at VMI by a 22-2 score.

UNC Versus Duke: North Carolina and Duke willmeet for the 62nd time on the lacrosse field Sunday,dating back to an 11-7 win by the Blue Devils inDurham, N.C. on May 15, 1952.

Duke has won 10 in a row in the series but NorthCarolina leads the overall series between the twoschools 37-24.

In the most recent meeting, Duke defeated theTar Heels 15-13 in the ACC Tournament final atKenan Stadium just three Sundays ago on April 26,2009. The most recent win by UNC came by a 10-9 score in overtime on March 20, 2004 in Durham,N.C.

Carolina On Cover Of Inside LacrosseMagazine: Senior midfielder Ben Hunt was featuredon the front cover of the March 2009 issue of InsideLacrosse Magazine. The magazine included aneight-page feature on the Tar Heels and their newbeginning under first-year head coach Joe Breschiwith photography by Triangle area native PeytonWilliams.

It marked the first time in the history of the maga-zine that a Tar Heel player had been featured on thecover.

Bart Wagner Has Scored In All But ThreeCareer Games: Bart Wagner has recorded at leastone point in 58 of 61 career games at UNC. His onlyscoreless games have come against Air Force onFebruary 25, 2006, against Ohio State on April 12,2008 and against Notre Dame on March 8, 2009.

Wagner led the Tar Heels in scoring in 2006, 2007and 2008. He has 91 career goals and 66 careerassists for a total of 160 career points heading intothe Duke game. Wagner is currently in ninth place incareer assists at UNC with 66.

Walterhoefer Has Won 15 Or More Face-Offs20 Times In His Career: When ShaneWalterhoefer won 22 face-offs against UMBC onMay 9, it marked the 20th time in his career he haswon at least 15 face-offs in a game. Walterhoeferhas won 15 or more face-offs in a game nine timesthis year.

Walterhoefer has won 15 or more face-offs in a

game in 20 of 56 games he has played in his careerwhich equates to 35.7 percent of the games he hasplayed in at Carolina.

The senior from Ellicott City, Md., won 15 in theseason opener against Robert Morris in 22 attemptsthen followed that with stunning back-to-back per-formances against Navy and Colgate on February20 and 22. Walterhoefer won 16 of 20 against theMidshipmen in a 9-8 win and 16 of 24 against theRed Raiders in an 11-9 win.

Walterhoefer then won 20 of 23 face-offs againstProvidence March 11. He won 17 of 19 face-offsagainst Maryland on March 21, 17 of 25 face-offsagainst Ohio State on April 11, 17 of 25 face-offsagainst Hofstra on April 18, 15 of 29 against Duke onApril 26 and 22 of 31 face-offs against UMBC onMay 9.

He has also won 14 face-offs in a game four othertimes this season, going 14 for 26 against Denver, 14for 23 against Lehigh, 14 for 24 against Duke and 14for 27 against Maryland in the ACC Tournamentsemifinals.

He has won 11 or more face-offs in a game in 16of 17 games this campaign.

In 17 games this year, Walterhoefer has neverbeen under 50 percent in face-off win percentage ina game. He has been over 50 percent 15 times andhe had two games where he won exactly 50 percentof his face-offs.

Walt’s Face-Off Winning Percentage AgainstMaryland: Shane Walterhoefer won 89.5 percent ofhis face-offs against Maryland on March 28. Thatwas the second-best face-off winning percentage ina game for Walterhoefer in his career.

His career best performance came againstDartmouth on February 25, 2007 when he won 90.4percent of his attempts, going 19 of 21.

Bitter and Petracca Start Out Hot AgainstRobert Morris and Denver: Attackmen Billy Bitter,a sophomore, and Gavin Petracca, a junior, startedout the season on fire for the Tar Heels in their sea-son opener. Bitter scorched Robert Morris for fivegoals and one assist and Petracca added four goalsand one assist.

Bitter set career highs for points and goals in agame against Robert Morris. He had scored threegoals as a freshman against Cornell on March 2,2008 and had three points as a freshman in both thatCornell game and against Duke on March 15, 2008.

Against Denver just a week later, Bitter rang upthree goals and four assists and Petracca had fourgoals and four assists. Bart Wagner and Ben Huntalso had three goals apiece in that game and SeanDelaney and Cryder DiPietro had two each.

Against the Pioneers, Petracca set career highsfor assists in a game with four — he previously hadthree each against Bellarmine on March 7, 2007,Notre Dame on March 10, 2007 and Johns Hopkinson March 31, 2007. His eight points were also acareer high, eclipsing the six he had against Vermonton March 13, 2007.

Bitter’s seven points versus Denver were one bet-ter than his previous career high of six against RobertMorris just a week before. His four assists were alsoa career high, bettering the three he had at Duke onMarch 15, 2008.

DiPietro Equals Career Goal Best: CryderDiPietro equaled his career high for goals in a gamewith two against Denver on February 14 and twoagainst Detroit Mercy on March 3. He also had twogoals in a game against Bellarmine on February 16,2008 and against Duke on April 25, 2008.

Petracca Named ACC Player Of The WeekFebruary 15: North Carolina's Gavin Petracca wasnamed the first 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference

Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week for the periodending on Sunday, February 15, 2009. Petraccahelped the fifth-ranked Tar Heels reach their highestgoal tally in a single game since 2001 in a 20-7 vic-tory over 14th-ranked Denver before a crowd of1,243 at Fetzer Field.

The junior from Manhasset, N.Y., had eight shots,including six shots on goal, scored four goals andhad a career-high four assists in the Tar Heels' sec-ond victory of the young season. Petracca's eightpoints broke his previous career-high of six pointsversus Vermont on March 13, 2007. The attackmanregistered three of his goals and three of his assistsin a 12-0 scoring run that broke open the game in thesecond half as an 8-6 Tar Heel halftime lead swelledto a 20-6 advantage in the fourth quarter. After hisbreakout effort, the redshirt junior attackman was thefeatured men’s lacrosse podcast on February 16,2009 on NCAA.com.

Wagner Named ACC Player Of The Week:North Carolina's Bart Wagner was named theAtlantic Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Player ofthe Week for the period ending Sunday, February 22.Wagner's six goals during the week propelled thefifth-ranked Tar Heels to wins over No. 9 Navy andNo. 17 Colgate.

The senior from Glen Arm, Md., registered sixgoals on 12 shots in two games over the weekend.The attackman scored three goals on four shots andscooped up five ground balls in a 9-8 victory over2008 NCAA quarterfinalist Navy on February 20. Onthe following Sunday, Wagner scored three goals oneight shots, added an assist and recorded fourground balls in an 11-9 victory over 2008 PatriotLeague Tournament champion Colgate.

Walterhoefer Earns ACC’s Final Player of theWeek Accolade For 2009: North Carolina's ShaneWalterhoefer was named the Atlantic CoastConference's final Men's Lacrosse Player of theWeek for the period ending on Sunday, April 19.Walterhoefer registered a game-high 10 ground ballsand won 17-of-25 face-offs in the 13-8 upset victoryover No. 6 Hofstra.

The senior from Ellicott City, Md., led the winningeffort on the Pride's home field April 18, endingHofstra's seven-game winning streak and handingthe Pride only their second loss of the season and itsfirst loss at home.

The 17 face-off wins moved Walterhoefer intofourth place all-time in NCAA Division I, while the 10ground balls moved him into eighth place in NCAADivision I history. Walterhoefer has won at least 15face-offs in a game 20 times in his career. He haswon 254-of-401 face-offs this year (.633) and is nowat 137 ground balls.

Walterhoefer went seven-for-seven on face-offsin the third quarter against Hofstra as UNC dominat-ed possession, allowing the Heels to outscore thePride 5-1 and turn a 6-5 halftime deficit into a 10-7lead entering the fourth quarter. The midfielder was10-of-12 in the second half alone.

Five Tar Heels Named Preseason All-Americas: Five members of the 2009 UNC men’slacrosse team were named to the InsideLacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook preseason All-AmericaTeams.

Michael Burnett, ‘81, and Mac Ford, ‘85, bothattackmen, were ACC Players of the Year and first-team All-Americas while playing for the Heels underU.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame coach Willie Scroggs.

Burnett played at UNC from 1980-83 and Fordfrom 1982-85.

Burnett played on NCAA championship teams in1981 and 1982 and Ford played on the 1982 NCAAtitle-winning team.

Attackman Jed Prossner, ‘05, and defensemanStephen McElduff, ‘06, are both candidates to makethe squad.

Carolina In The ACC Tournament: NorthCarolina has an all-time record of 16-14 in ACCTournament play. Carolina is 9-12 in ACCTournament semifinal games and 7-2 in ACCTournament championship matches.

Between 1989 and 1996, the Tar Heels won 15 ofthe first 16 games it played in the ACC Tournament.The only loss came in the championship game in1995. UNC won ACC Tournament championshipsin 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996.

Beginning in 1997, the Tar Heels lost 12 succes-sive ACC Tournament games beginning with a 17-13 loss in the semifinals of that ‘97 Tournament toVirginia in Charlottesville, Va. The 12th successivesemifinal loss came a year ago when UNC fell toDuke 17-6 in Charlottesville. Carolina broke thatsemifinal losing streak with a 16-10 victory over No.1-seeded Maryland on April 24, 2009.

Prior to April 24, Carolina’s last ACC Tournamentvictory came on April 21, 1996 when UNC defeatedVirginia 13-11 in the championship game inCharlottesville.

ACC Tournament Quick Facts: North Carolinahas the second best winning percentage of the fourschools in ACC tournament history at .533. The TarHeels have outscored their opponents in ACCTournament games 345-304. UNC has scored thesecond most goals behind Virginia’s 354 and it hasallowed the fewest goals at 304.

UNC is 4-7 all-time against Duke in ACCTournament play while the Tar Heels are 7-2 againstMaryland and 5-5 against Virginia.

Joe Breschi In The ACC Tournament: First-year North Carolina head coach Joe Breschi is now9-1 in ACC Tournament games as a Tar Heel player,UNC assistant coach and Carolina head coach afterthis year’s ACC Tournament. Breschi was 4-0 inACC Tournament games as a player in 1989 and1990, 4-0 in ACC Tournament games as an assis-tant coach in 1991 and 1992 and 1-1 as a headcoach in 2009.

11 Championships Overall: North Carolina haswon 11 ACC men’s lacrosse championships overall,all between 1981 and 1996. Prior to 1989, the ACCtitle was decided on the basis of the regular-seasonstandings. UNC won titles in 1981, 1982, 1985 (a tri-championship with Maryland and Virginia) and 1988.
