2. Get it in Writing – your home belongs to you and you should be in control. Make sure that you are satisfied with the result. The terms of payment should be discussed prior to the job and are adhered to by both parties. It is inadvisable to pay for an entire job upfront. Ensure that you get any manufacturer warranties and contractor guarantees in writing.

3. Communication – did they return your calls? Did they send the documentation that you asked for? Did they follow through? If you answered, “no”, to these questions, then make sure you communicate your concerns to the company representative. If they still can’t make good, walk away. If you aren’t getting what you need on the front end when they are trying to get your business, it may be indicative of the quality they will deliver.

If you have a problem within the warranty period, you will want to deal with a company that is still operating. The contractor’s warranty is only as good as the longevity and reputation of their company.

2. Workmanship – when choosing a siding contractor, the sales person should show confidence and enthusiasm in their work and be knowledgeable about siding. A good contractor will supply appropriate product literature and samples. They will welcome your questions about siding in general, and their company specifically.

3. Value over Price – feel free to let the contractor know that you are shopping around but never choose a company based only on price. Cheap bids drive down the market and anyone with overhead and proper insurance has to establish pricing to cover such costs. Customers that are sold on price as their sole criteria often end up spending more money to fix problems and many of these problems would have been covered under a workmanship guarantee by a reputable, established siding company.
