Looking back over the past issues of my ‘Weekly Ramble’ (Which accompanies the Toothill Church Newsletter) I notice that on a large number of occasions I speak about being a servant of God, the Love of God and using our gifts and talents for the glory of God. There were many references to people past and present in Toothill Church or the Partnership who have used their gifts to help others grow in faith or sow the seeds of faith.
Last month Gayle wrote a very good article regarding the theme for all our churches during October; ‘Stewards of the Kingdom’ which will explore how we use our gifts and talents within the church and the community.
Within our Partnership there are many people who use their gifts and they are noticed because they are in the front line, but behind these people are an army of people who often go unnoticed doing jobs which are essential to the smooth running of any church or our Partnership. To these we owe a debt of gratitude and we say thank you for the work you do.
But let’s look beyond the church at what people do outside away from the church.
At work or within our communities we can be faithful to God by our actions and what we say and do. When I was working for the council I always kept a Palm Cross attached to the screen around my desk. Just that simple sign spoke more words than I would ever say. Colleagues would see the cross and come to me for a chat about something bothering them.
We can all play our part being servants of God and using what we have for the benefit of others.
Loving God, We come to you in thanksgiving, knowing all that we are and all that we have is a gift from you. In faith and love, help us to do your will. We are listening, Lord God. Speak your words into the depth of our souls, that we may hear you clearly.
We offer to you this day all the facets of our lives, whether it be at home, at work, or at school, to be patient, to be merciful, to be generous, to be holy.
Give us the wisdom and insight to understand your will for each one of us and the fervour to fulfil our good intentions. We offer our gifts of time, talents and possessions to you as a true act of faith, to reflect

Prayer for heart-peace
Dear Lord,
Sometimes the world is a worrying place, so many problems, so much pain for so many. We feel overwhelmed and don’t know which way to turn. Help us to turn the right way - to you Lord. Help us to hand over to you our worries, to exchange them for your peace in our hearts no matter what’s going on all around, knowing that you walk with us through it all, today, tomorrow and forever. In Jesus name, Amen

Lindsay Gilder's Baptism Saturday 29th August 2015
“Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptised?” Acts 8 NIV
Lindsay shared her faith's journey so far with the 70 or so gathered. She thanked God and her Mum & Dad that she had grown up in a loving Christian family, always growing in her knowledge of God, so that now she was confident owning Him as her Lord and Saviour before everyone. One of the songs she chose included the words:
Jesus, all for Jesus; all I am and have and ever hope to be. All of my ambitions, hopes and plans,
I surrender these into Your hands.
It takes a lot of courage to stand up and be counted in such a public way: symbolising the washing away of past sins, trusting in the forgiveness Christ made possible, and pledging to follow Him in the family of God's people. Often done in faith for babies, differing amounts of water may be used, from a symbolic marking with the sign of the cross, pouring over the person's hair, to Lindsay's adult full immersion Westlea are very grateful to Holy Trinity Shaw for letting us use their lovely baptistry.
If this is a step you would like to consider, ask your church leadership. Rev Mike Dilly, Westlea Church
Be thou a bright flame before me, Be thou a guiding star above me, Be thou a smooth path below me,
Be thou a kindly shepherd behind me, Today – tonight – and for ever (Columba)

Serve One Another
‘O God, who art the author of peace and lover of concord…whose service is perfect freedom’ (Collect for Peace, BCP).
Paul wrote to the Galatians: ‘It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.’ (Gal 5:1). To a church which consisted largely of slaves, he adds ‘serve one another in love’ (13). How does Paul encourage us to use our freedom to serve others?
Free to serve unselfishly All of us would prefer to be served by others, but Paul’s challenge is ‘do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh’ (13). If you want to understand the word flesh, take off the h and read backwards ie self! If we are serving one another, it’s not about my needs, but looking to the concerns of others. How available are we to serve others? Do we offer the excuse of being too busy or resent the time? When stepping out of our comfort zone, be prepared to risk rejection and misunderstanding!!
Free to serve lovingly: Luis Suárez was sent home from the 2014 World Cup for biting other players! Paul warns of the danger of Christians falling into the same trap: ‘If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other’ (15). We are called to love others, rather than using or exploiting them for our own purposes.
Are we prepared to think about people’s needs and put ourselves in their shoes? Paul tells us to ‘live and be led by the Spirit’ (16,18), for it’s the Holy Spirit who will enable us to see others with the eyes of Jesus. ‘A Christian is the most free lord of all, and subject to none; a Christian is the most dutiful servant of all, and subject to everyone’ (Martin Luther).

Call to Support Persecuted Syrian and Iraqi Christians
Many Christians in the Middle East face a threat to their survival at least as great as last century when millions were killed in the Armenian and Assyrian genocides.
Syrian and Iraqi Christians are desperately fleeing Islamic State territory, where they face being driven from their homes, robbed, enslaved or murdered. The Barnabas Fund is organising rescue operations to enable endangered Christians to escape and re-settle outside of the region and is calling on Western political leaders, who generally are reluctant, to grant visas.
First signatories include Lord Carey, former Archbishop of Canterbury, and Canon Andrew White, former Vicar of Baghdad. There is a copy of the 'Operation Safe Havens' petition in St Mary's Church. For further copies and information, contact the Barnabas Fund at www.barnabasfund.org, tel 024 7623 1923.

Introduction to ‘Stewards of the Kingdom’
A series of 4 services on the theme of Stewardship for the West Swindon and Lydiard Church Partnership for October 2015
October 4th Co-workers of creation
October 11th Waiters for the world
October 18th Companions in community
October 25th Ambassadors for Christ
At the time of writing this piece for the newsletter I am in Orkney with
Ian and the children and we are enjoying visiting all the historical sites
this special island has to offer. It has been eye opening to think and
contemplate the world of ancient people. Christianity arrived in Scotland
in the 4th Century, once embraced by the people it became 'a way of
life’, an engagement with God in all aspects of daily life.
Engagement with God in all aspects of life is exactly what
stewardship is about and why it is so important that in October we
spend time together as a community of Christians to give it some
thought, prayer and action through our Sunday morning worship and
beyond.
In our series of services entitled ‘Stewards of the Kingdom’ we will focus on different aspects of Stewardship. At our Partnership Worship Planning meeting the scripture reading of 1 Peter 4 verses 10- 12 was chosen as the thread to weave the four services together.
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen
Stewardship starts at Creation and so that is where our series of services will commence. On the 4th October you are invited to look at Genesis to explore God’s gift of creation. How are we called to be co-workers in caring for this amazing world?
On the 11th October you are invited to look at the story of The Feeding of the 5,000 and think about being waiters for the world. How are we to share the earth’s resources and live our lives generously?

Baptist Women's World Day of Prayer
Monday 2 November
On this Day of Prayer, Baptist women from around the world will come together to study God’s word, pray and give so that our world will be impacted for Christ. The 2015 Baptist Women’s World Day of Prayer programme begins a new five year series of studies based on the theme 'Arise, Shine'. Over the next five years we will learn that when we rise up he shines through – community, unity, justice and service.

On the 18th October you are invited to think about The Sower and what it means to be companions in community. How are we to walk alongside our brothers and sisters in our local communities showing God’s love?
On the 25th October our final service of the series will focus on what it means to be an ambassador for Christ by looking at what the Kingdom of God is like. How we are to live our lives using our gifts, time, possessions and money for the Kingdom?
A Resource Package has been put together for the four Sundays which has been distributed to all Worship Leaders and Junior Church Leaders. The aim is to have our whole Church family included in learning about Stewardship.
In St Magnus Cathedral on Sunday morning the service was all about being welcoming and inclusive. A powerful message of ‘love’ for all God’s people was resounding around the beautiful building and hopefully out into the streets of Kirkwall and beyond. God’s love is what it is all about, so I pray that we will all commit to our unity of Stewardship Services knowing that ‘we love because God first loved us’.
With Kindest regards on behalf of the Partnership Worship Planning Meeting Team
Gayle Bryon

Swindon College Chaplaincy Until recently Swindon College had a chaplain who was doing a wonderful job at supporting the students and staff as a presence and listening ear for any who wanted it.
However she has recently left, leaving a real void of spiritual and pastoral support.
I am looking for someone/and group of people who would be interested in being involved in the college in the delivery of chaplaincy work. It would be on a volunteer basis and could be as little as a couple of hours a week.
Full training and support will be given and a yet undisclosed remuneration will be offered.
If anyone is interested please would they contact me on [email protected] or 07817 166554

The Poppy Appeal – could you help by giving some
time this autumn?
The 2015 Poppy Appeal will be launched this month (October).
The Royal British Legion was first set up to help those returning from the First World War. Almost a century on, they're still helping today's Service people, veterans, and their families coping with bereavement, living with disability or finding employment.
The Poppy is a powerful symbol worn by people right across the UK to commemorate to the sacrifices of our Armed Forces and to show support to those still serving today and their loved ones.
However, the Poppy Appeal would not be able to continue without the dedication of the teams of volunteers who stand in the streets, shops and supermarkets. Each town and village has a Poppy Appeal Organiser - also a volunteer - who runs these teams, arranges for cover, drops off and collects the boxes. In some cases this role has been taken on by a community group which has the effect of a positive outreach into the local area.
The Poppy Appeal is always grateful for the work of these dedicated people, but the volunteers themselves tell them that they enjoy the work, as it gives them the opportunity to meet and talk to people from all walks of life. They also have the pride in being part of an organisation which achieves so much, and they feel that playing their part selling Poppies shows support for those who sacrificed their lives for us.
If you would like to know more about being a volunteer or a Poppy Appeal Organiser for the Royal British Legion, or if you would like a visit from a local volunteer who can speak to your community/church group, please contact [email protected] or telephone the national helpline 0808 802 8080 and ask to be put in touch with your local Community Fundraiser.
