25 Years Dean’s Circle Membe rs hip
Established by Dean Judson L. Klooster, the Dean’s Circle is a leadership giving society for Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. It was created to encourage annual giving to any School of Dentistry fund. The fi rst offi cial year there were 44 donors who had met the requirement of annual gifts totaling $1,500 or more. Dean’s Circle members are honored in this publication, a donor wall in the lobby of the school, and various other publications for the School of Dentistry. At our annual dinner for Dean’s Circle members held on April 11, 2013 at the Summit House Restaurant in Fullerton, CA, the following were honored for 25 years of membership.

On Thursday, February 7, 2013, the Alumni Association held an Alumni-Student Convention honoring the class of 1963 and members of the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Prosthodontics. The introduction of the master of ceremonies for the evening was worth repeating . . . ”Perhaps only once in a lifetime will we have the unique privilege and opportunity to witness a master performer . . .
an entertainment genius! A person who has a seemingly endless wealth of talent combined with classic charm and stunning good looks… Unfortunately…. that entertainer couldn’t be here! Instead… we have
a person who admittedly… is NOT in“Who’s Who in America.” He is, however, president and general manager of ‘Who’s He? In San Bernardino!’ Ladies and Gentleman, please welcome: Pete McCleod!” His fi rst duty of the evening was to welcome the Class of 1963, seven of whom worked as faculty. Others represented our country by serving in the Army, Navy and Marine Corps.Several went on for postgraduate training in
orthodontics, prosthodontics, and endodontics. Members of this class have become an Alumni Association Alumnus of the Year, a table clinic judge, and treasurer of the Alumni Association. Organized dentistry also benefi ted from this class, through a dental society and specialty board presidency.

Some have had interesting work experiences before entering dental school, including an apprentice at a funeral home, a mop and broom factory worker, and a social worker. One of the members even brought his six-week old baby to his admissions interview! And, oh yes, one of the admission interviewers wrote: “He has a very nice wife who is a good infl uence on him.” Good job, Grete Bakland! In 1963,
• Tuition was $4,200 for dental school, today it is $253,692.
• The average cost of a new home was $19,300.
• The Dow Jones hit 767.• President John Kennedy
was assassinated.• Martin Luther King gave the
“I have a dream” speech.• Zip codes were fi rst
introduced. • “Go Away Little Girl” by

DEAN APPOINTEDRonald Dailey, PhD, executive associate dean, has been appointed by the University board of trustees to serve as the School’s fi fth dean, effective July 1, 2013. He replaces Charles J. Goodacre, DDS ‘71, MSD, who has served in that position since 1994. Richard Hart, MD, DrPH, president and CEO, Loma Linda University Health, announced the appointment on February 26, 2013 to a large gathering of faculty and staff. “After a careful search process, Dr. Dailey’s name was selected for presentation to the University’s board of trustees. Dr. Dailey’s long track record makes him an obvious choice for dean and our board confi rmed that recommendation. I am delighted to welcome Ron into that position.” Dr. Dailey was fi rst employed by the School of Dentistry in June 1975 as an instructor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, while completing a master of arts degree in Educational Psychology at Walla Walla College. In July of 1978 he was promoted to assistant professor, and became director of Admissions and Student Affairs; in 1986 his title changed to assistant dean for Admissions and Student Affairs. Dr. Dailey was appointed associate dean for Academic Affairs in 1993, the same year he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation which focused on a re-analysis of the relationship of psychomotor and perceptual skills to student performance in dental school.
With the acquisition of his doctor of philosophy degree in Higher and Professional Education from University of Southern California in 1994, Dr. Dailey was promoted to associate professor, Department of Dental Educational Services; and a year later he was named the department’s chair, a position he maintains. One of the more meaningful accomplishments of Dr. Dailey’s teaching and administrative career has been writing. With LLU professor of biostatistics Jay S. Kim, PhD, a ground-breaking textbook, “Biostatistics for Oral Healthcare,” was published in 2008. On June 1, 2009, after 15 years as associate dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Dailey was named executive associate dean—a position that justifi ed an accumulating list of duties he was already performing. Dr. Dailey joins a limited fraternity of dental school deans who are not trained as dentists, among them the current dean of the University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry, John Featherstone, MSc, PhD. Among the honors Dr. Dailey has received is his honorary membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon—a society that was established in 1914 to promote and recognize scholarship and character among students of dentistry. He has also been selected for Teaching Excellence awards in 1986 and 1987; and the School of Dentistry’s
Karen and Ron Dailey, Katie and Colin.

Distinguished Service Award in 2001. Dr. Dailey retains a seat on the Loma Linda City Council that he won in 2009. He is married to Karen Winston, MD, a Loma Linda University pediatrician, and has three adult children: Casey, Colin, and Katie.
OFFICE OF DEVELOPMENT Our focus in CONTACT has always been and continues to be alumni, faculty, staff, donors, and friends. There are some important development staff changes, however, that would be helpful as you navigate through the University system for the School of Dentistry. Dean of the School of Dentistry—Please join us in welcoming to our development team our new dean, Ronald Dailey, PhD. Dr. Dailey is anxious to experience the opportunities we have to meet the needs of our alumni and donors. Director of Gift Planning and Special Gifts—Maynard Lowry, PhD, will retire at the end of July. Dr. Lowry came to Loma Linda University as the assistant to the director of libraries in 1974 and has served as the associate director of libraries (La Sierra Campus) from 1976 to 1981. Following graduate study at the University at Buffalo in New York, he was appointed director of libraries (1981 to 1990). From 1990 to 2004 he served as library director at La Sierra University and then as director of planned giving. Commenting on his retirement plans Dr. Lowry said “I have worked with some of the greatest faculty,
students and alumni anywhere. I will miss these daily contacts, however I want to be able to travel more with my wife, Jean, and to spend more time with my grandchildren. I will also seek out opportunities to volunteer in the community.” Director of Development—Rachel Terwillegar, CFRE, CSPG, with more than 35 years of service in Adventist institutions, fi ve years with Loma Linda University, remains committed to service at the School of Dentistry. Until a replacement has been named for Dr. Lowry, she will assist donors with special gifts and has the support of the University philanthropy team for planned giving. Development Assistant— DonaJayne K. King (DJ) is a longtime resident of Loma Linda, California and a three-time alumnus of La Sierra University. Her degrees include a masters in business administration (marketing manage-ment concentration), a bachelor of science in Integrated Marketing and a bachelor of fi ne arts in Graphic Design. DJ has worked in the development, marketing and creative arts industries over the last decade. She replaces Kent Green who accepted another University position. We are excited that DJ has joined our development team and you will soon experience her expertise in graphic design in our Offi ce of Development publications.

At the dinner, in addition to years of membership, special recognition was given to Charles J. Goodacre, DDS ‘71, for his tenure as fi rst alumnus dean with 19 years of service. Good food and great musical entertainment at the Dean’s Circle dinner were followed by a video tribute. After that he was presented with a special gift of a designer rocking chair. Dean Goodacre received two standing ovations that evening, one upon the presentation of the gift and the other at the conclusion of his closing remarks in which he expressed his vision and wishes for the School going forward.
Dean Goodacre sits in the cherry wood, Thomas Moser Pasadena rocker he received from an appreciative group of Dean Circle members. In accepting the gift, the Dean said how moved he was by the outpouring of personal generosity and the sentiment it represented.

to the much needed free dental care for a period of about 4 years. Every year, about 5,500 children will receive free dental care in the form of dental screenings, and about 700 children who are enrolled in the Riverside County Dental Program will receive more complex dental treatments too. This way, the professionals will promote good oral health among kids who would otherwise not have access to the dental care they need. The grant will be mostly used to offer free dental care services which are preventative/basic, since prevention is much more important than cure itself. Gum disease, dental decay and many other such dental complications can be prevented extremely easily with regular dental screenings and the right preventative dental treatments (such as fl uoride applications or dental sealants). “It’s a huge thing for us to be able to provide these services to children in Riverside County,” says Dr. Carla Lidner Baum, assistant professor and the grant’s project director. First 5 Riverside offi cials say the collaboration with Loma Linda University School of Dentistry helps First 5 Riverside further its goals of providing the growing numbers of families in Riverside County access to oral health care for their children.
UNIHEALTH FOUNDATION GRANT
The School of Dentistry recently received a $154,425 grant payment from the UniHealth Foundation to cover an additional eighteen months of its service learning collaboration with MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity).

FIRST 5 GRANT RECEIVED
The Loma Linda University School of Dentistry recently received a grant of $4.5 million dollars which will allow for the expansion of the program offering free dental care for kids. The grant has been offered by the First 5 Riverside County Children and Families Commissions. Thanks to this grant, free dental care for children in the area is going to be expanded. The funds for the free dental care program are going to be released gradually, and the program will ensure that kids will have access

This is the third grant that UniHealth has awarded to the School of Dentistry since the fi rst two-year appropriation of $211,667 in the Spring of 2008 (initiated by an application in 2006 by Brian Novy, DDS ’06, assistant professor, Department of Restorative Dentistry.) The grants from UniHealth pay for the expenses involved in the School of Dentistry’s collaboration with MEND. The School provides faculty, students, and their combined expertise to serve the oral healthcare needs of the substantial, indigent population in Southern California’s San Fernando Valley. In the town of Pacoima, MEND has established a large, full-service medical and dental clinic.
Starting as a small group of volunteers working from a garage in the early 1970s, MEND began as an effort to transform the lives of the neediest residents of the San Fernando Valley. Driven 99 percent by volunteers, and almost entirely privately funded, MEND has grown primarily by word-of-mouth into one of the leanest of operating non-profi t organizations.
LLOYD BAUM DENTAL LABORATORY
In recognition of the contribution of Dr. Lloyd Baum in establishing a dental clinic in the Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital in Hangzhou, China, a memorial plaque was placed in the Clinic in 2011. In the photo above, Dr. Larry Liqun Wu (left) and the associate director Dr. Andy Lieping Sheng (right) pose with the plaque. Dr. Wu completed a 6-month externship in our International Dentist Program (IDP) in 2001. He received his externship certifi cate from Dr. Baum who at the time was director of the IDP.
In memory of Dr. Baum and inappreciation for his mentorship, Dr. Wu has made a generous gift for renovation of space across from the Class of 1971 Amphitheater. To date nearly $200,000 has been received for this project.
