Consumerism and the Economy
Last chapter we looked at how the economies were different, this chapter looks at how they are the same
• an economic theory that links prosperity to consumer demand for goods and services
• makes consumer behaviour central to economic decision making
• the idea that the more people buy, the better the economy because more money is being circulated
• Tied to materialism excessive desire to acquire and consume material goods.
• a value system which regards social status as being determined by affluence as well as the perception that happiness can be increased through buying, spending and accumulating material wealth.

Think of WEST EDMONTON MALLWest Edmonton Mall covers a gross area of about 1 000 000 m²and cost 32 billion to build. There are over 2300 stores and services and parking for more than 20,000 vehicles. More than 23,000 people are employed at the property. The mall receives 28.2 million visitors per year and between 60,000 and 150,000 shoppers daily depending on the day and season. The mall is currently valued at 30 billion.
Think of the money being circulated, things being bought, sold, services, eating, drinking, rides, hotels, movies...

Your responsibility as a consumer is to make the best choice about your own money as educated as possible
Do corporations have any responsibility as to how they conduct business?
