Consumer & Relative Newsletter Autumn 2020
Greetings All!
Welcome to the first edition of the Consumer and Relative Newsletter for
2020. We are again gearing up for a very busy year.
Our Leisure and Lifestyle staff are already hard at work, planning
wonderful outings and activities for our residents to participate in
throughout 2020. Please like us on Facebook to keep up to date with all
of the latest happenings at Carrington.
Our Mary Mackillop facility is due for reaccreditation this year. It will be
the second facility at Carrington to be assessed against the new Aged
Care Standards, which were overhauled last year by the Quality and
Safety Commission.
The Accreditation process is compulsory for aged care providers, and the audits are essential in
ensuring Aged Care providers are meeting the required standards of care for residents in our
care.
During this process, assessors from the Quality and Safety Commission will visit Mary Mackillop
and talk to staff, residents, and families to get their feedback about their satisfaction with the
care and services being provided.
At the conclusion of the audit, a determination will be made as to whether the facility has met
the Accreditation Standards.
We have commenced the refurbishment of the courtyard in the Cobbitty Unit of Paling Court. I
have written to all families and residents advising them of this exciting opportunity to make the
courtyard more appealing and friendly to the care of our residents.
The work should be completed between 6-8 weeks.
I thank our residents and their families for their cooperation, as I am sure that everyone will be
very pleased with the end result.
Over the next few months we will commence construction of our Riverview Assisted Living
Apartments, a service concept between Aged Care and Independent Living where occupants of
these apartments receive a suite of services to assist them with their daily living, and yet
remain to enjoy their independence.
On another note, it has been great to finally see some decent rainfall, which managed to assist
the RFS in putting out a number of fires burning across NSW in January and February.
We can only hope that the rainfall continues, easing the conditions that our farmers are
currently experiencing across the country.
Until next time, keep well and keep smiling!
- Raad Richards, Chief Executive
Resident & Relative Newsletter Autumn 2020 PAGE 2
Hello To All,
Well, it has been a long, hot summer, hasn’t it? We have seen the extreme weather that Australia is so well known for.
Not only bushfires, but as Dorothy Mackellar remarks in her well known poem, ‘Droughts and flooding rain.’
Even though our residents have been making the most of the warmer weather, we are all looking forward to the cooler temperatures as we head into Autumn.
So, what have we been up to in Mary Mackillop over the past few months?
As always, Kellie, Michelle, and Vicki have been keeping our residents busy with plenty of outings for them to enjoy.
In the lead up to Christmas, the residents experienced the ever popular Morning Melodies concert at Campbelltown, lunch at the recently revamped Camden Valley Inn, and a trip around the local area to see Christmas lights in the evening.
The festive season saw our residents and families come together for our annual Christmas lunches– it was great to see so many enjoy the delicious food prepared
by our hotel services team– they always do a great job.
Our facility also celebrated a major milestone in December– it’s 25th anniversary! It was a pleasure to have Peg McEntee present at the celebrations.
For those of you who are not familiar with Peg, she was instrumental in the commissioning of the Mary Mackillop facility at Carrington. She was also the first female to sit on Carrington’s board.
One of our residents also celebrated a special milestone of their own. Our best wishes go to Dorothy Wilson, who celebrated her 100th birthday in December 2019 with her friends and family. It was great to get the residents together and to enjoy some tea and cake, and celebrate with Dorothy.
The staff always make the effort to celebrate any traditional days of Australia, as well as other countries around the world. We had the chance to celebrate Australia Day, and Chinese New Year at the beginning of 2020.
Staff and residents wrote their wishes for
Mary Mackillop Update
Resident & Relative Newsletter Autumn 2020 PAGE 3
the future onto red tags (the colour red is associated in Chinese culture with good luck), and hung them on the trees out the front of the facility to support and celebrate Chinese New Year.
We like to focus on supporting those couples that we have in our care. We had our ever popular Valentines Day lunch on February the 14th, love was certainly in the air!
We also had a chance to pay tribute to Jean Olsen, a resident in our independent living village who has been responsible for the coordination of our kiosk for the past 25 years, and has been a welcome presence in the facility. Jean is stepping back from her kiosk duties, and we wish her all the best in her ‘retirement’!
Another new initiative that has been a big hit in the facility is our ‘wish list.’ Residents write down their wish and pin it on a board for us to see.
We’ve been able to fulfil a few wishes so far! One resident had not felt sand underneath her feet for decades (she had grown up near the beach), and so we took her and her daughter down the coast to Wollongong to experience this special moment together.
Another resident wanted nothing more than a bowl of crunchy hot chips to enjoy, while we were able to surprise Genaro with his very own trumpet to play and enjoy (pictured above). Genaro is a keen musician and once played in a big band.
Another big occasion coming up for Mary
Mackillop will be our three year
reaccreditation. We are required by the
Quality and Safety Commission to
undergo this process, which stretches
over 2-3 days depending on the size of
the facility. This visit will be unannounced,
so the auditors can show up at any time.
In between this three year
reaccreditation, the facility also undergoes
a series of spot audits. This is to ensure
that we are providing the best possible
care for the residents in our facility.
I would like to again thank you for your
patience and understanding. Leanne and I
have been supporting the day to day
operations of Grasmere Terrace facility as
well as Mary Mackillop, while a new
manager of Grasmere Terrace is found.
Resident & Relative Newsletter Autumn 2020 PAGE 4
So, that’s just some of the many things that we’ve been up to over the past few months!
These newsletters will be reverting back to quarterly releases as the season’s change, so
we are looking forward to keeping you updated with all of the great activities and outings
the residents have the chance to enjoy.
Enjoy the time left of daylight savings! While we’ve all been enjoying the sunshine and
the warmer weather at Mary Mackillop, we do look forward to autumn at Carrington, a
beautiful time of the year.
Nature always puts on a show in our stunning grounds, and I love to watch the leaves fall
from the trees, and I enjoy the crunch of the crispy leaves on the ground as I step on
them.
We can only hope that the cooler weather continues to bring some much needed rain for
our farmers.
Please keep safe.
Warmest Regards,
Julie Barry

Werombi Court Update Hello All,
It’s certainly been a busy few months at Werombi Court. The festive season is always lovely to experience, and we made sure that there were plenty of Christmas themed activities for our residents to participate in and
enjoy.
Our Werombi Court Christmas lunches were very well attended, and it was wonderful to see so many relatives and family coming together to share a meal with their loved one.
We were very lucky to have a visit from Santa and his elves on Christmas morning. Thank you to the residents from our Carrington retirement village who came by in full costume to spread some Christmas cheer for our residents.
Our residents were kept busy over December and January with everything from Balloon Tennis in the day centre (often very competitive!),
to outings to the Plough and Harrow for lunch, and even visits from our volunteer Liz and her dog Marley.
February saw us celebrate Valentine’s Day. Our Leisure and Lifestyle team member Celine spent some time with the residents, who wrote down their love and life advice on pink hearts, which were then turned into a bouquet that was displayed in our day care area. We can learn so much from our residents, and sometimes the simple ideas are often the best ones.
We dove back into live cooking with Chef
Paul, who came by in February to fry up a
delicious BBQ for our residents to enjoy.
The Live Cooking program was well
received by residents last year (there’s
nothing better than the delicious smells
that waft through the facility when Paul
fires up his cooker!).
We’re looking forward to continuing with our Live Cooking Program in 2020, and we can’t wait to see what Paul will come up with next.
After a long, hot, and smoky summer, we
are certainly looking forward to some
cooler weather as we move into a new
season. We’ve got plenty of activities
coming up for our residents to enjoy.

Werombi Court Update
We have an ABBA Concert coming up in March. We can’t wait to see staff and residents lip syncing along to some of the group’s greatest hits. Henny Penny will also be returning to our facilities in March. We saw how much the residents enjoyed watching the chicks hatch, and then taking care of them once they were born. It will be back by popular demand, and we are sure the residents will love it just as much as they did the first time.
Footy Tipping will be making it’s return also,
as the footy season commences in the
coming months. This is also a source of much
competition amongst the residents, many of
whom are mad NRL fans.
The end of March will also see our residents head to the Camden Show, an annual event that is always very much enjoyed by all of us here at Carrington. Our residents had a fantastic time last year, taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the busy event.
We’ll also be continuing with our
intergenerational visits, as well as a wide
variety of activities- gardening, arm chair
travel, cooking/baking, and arts and craft.
On another note I do have some important
news to share with you. Since April 2018, I
have been the Care Service Manager of
Werombi Court. I’ve very much enjoyed my
time at Werombi Court, working with staff to
provide the best possible care for our
residents.
I’ve taken on a new opportunity at
Carrington, and have been appointed as a
Clinical Manager. As a result of this change, I
will now spend two days per week in
Werombi Court as a Clinical Manager, and
will assist in clinical duties across the
Carrington Campus on other days.
We have appointed a new Care Services
Manager to take my place, Sophie Yilmaz.
Sophie commenced her duties on Monday the
24th February 2020, and I wish her all the
best in her new role. I will be around to
assist with a handover and to ensure a
smooth transition.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank
all of you for your continued support over the
past couple of years.
Regards,
Sara Stec

Information for residents of residential aged care services, their family
members, and visitors
There is an outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in mainland China.
If residents, their family members, or visitors have travelled from mainland China or think they
may have been a close contact of a confirmed case of coronavirus, special restrictions apply.
They must isolate themselves in their home or accommodation, which means not attending
public places, in particular work, school, university, or public gatherings.
This info sheet should be read in conjunction with the ‘What you need to know’ and ‘Isolation
guidance’ info sheets at www.health.gov.au
Who needs to isolate?
To help limit the spread of coronavirus, you must isolate yourself in the following
circumstances:
If you have left, or transited through, mainland China in the last 14 days you must isolate
yourself for 14 days from the date of leaving mainland China
If you have been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus, you must isolate
yourself for 14 days from the date of last contact with the confirmed case
Residential Aged Care Services
Residents of aged care facilities are advised that if any family members or visitors meet the
restrictions, residents will not be able to have these visitors. These visitors will need to be
isolated in their own home.
Residential aged care facilities have been advised to have appropriate precautions in place to
ensure residents continue to remain safe from coronavirus. These precautions include
monitoring for coronavirus, assessment, testing, and having space and resources prepared in
the unlikely event a resident needs to be isolated.
At this stage, there is a low likelihood that residential aged care facilities will be affected by
coronavirus, and these measures are purely precautionary.
What does it mean to be isolated?
If you are a resident and need to be isolated, you will be placed in a single room away from
other residents and will not be allowed to see visitors. Health care and residential care workers
will continue to provide support and care while you are isolated. If you need to leave your room,
you will be required to wear a surgical mask which will be provided by health care workers.
There is no need for any healthy resident to wear a mask.
How can we help prevent the spread of coronavirus?
Practicing good hand and sneeze/cough hygiene is the best defence against most viruses. You
should:
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, before and after eating, and after going
to the toilet
Cover your cough and sneeze, dispose of tissues, and use alcohol based hand sanitiser
If unwell, avoid contact with others (touching, kissing, hugging, and other contact)
More Information
While coronavirus is a concern, it is important to remember that most people displaying
symptoms such as a cough, fever, sore throat are likely suffering with a cold– not coronavirus
For more resources: www.health.gov.au or call the National Coronavirus Info Line on 1800 020
080. This line operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Werombi Court Update Hello All,
Well, as always
it’s been a busy
three months
here at
Carrington, and
we have no
doubt that this
will continue as
we move further
into 2020!
I’d like to thank you all for your patience an
support as Leanne and I assist in running the
Grasmere Terrace facility.
It was a pleasure to welcome Deb Steele to
the team in November last year as Clinical
Manager at Grasmere Terrace. Prior to this,
she spent time in Campbelltown Emergency
Department, and in the Northern Territory as
a Registered Nurse working in Aboriginal and
remote communities. Deb has been a
welcome presence in Grasmere Terrace, and
we thank her for all her hard work so far.
We hope that you all had a chance to enjoy
the festive season with your friends and
loved ones. It was great to see so many of
you come together with your families to
enjoy our annual Christmas lunches. The
food served up by hotel services was
delicious as usual.
We were very pleased with how successful
our Glenmore and Kirkham Christmas parties
were this year. We had both parties in the
Recreation Centre, and having the extra
space was ideal. We hope that all of our
Glenmore and Kirkham families enjoyed this
new venue.
We’ve absolutely loved continuing with our
intergenerational playgroups. This initiative
led by the Leisure and lifestyle team has
proved to be a big hit across all four of our
facilities, and we are looking forward to
continuing this in 2020.
Grasmere Terrace Update
Resident & Relative Newsletter Autumn 2020 PAGE 9
Grasmere Terrace Update Proving that you’re never too young to
travel the world, one of our residents Joan
headed off on a cruise for 11 nights! We
hope you had an amazing holiday Joan!
It was a pleasure to have Steve Mortimer out
to teach us all how to play shuffleboard.
Steve used to play for the Bulldogs, and
after retirement has set up a successful
shuffleboard business.
Shuffleboard was previously a game that was
used mainly in retirement villages, but has
since been introduced to residential aged
care.
Our Mary Mac residents have been playing
shuffleboard for some time, and it seems
they’ve started a trend! We will have to look
into holding an inter-facility shuffleboard
tournament.
Carrington are joining in with the local
universities and Australia Shuffle Board to
participate in a study about the quality of life
and outcomes for the elderly when
shuffleboard is played regularly.
It’s been a long, hot, smoky summer and
while we’re looking forward to the cooler
weather, we’re still making the most of the
sunshine with plenty of outings and activities
for our residents to enjoy.
We’ve got lots coming up in Autumn, and we
can’t wait for you to experience all the
happenings at Carrington as we move further
into the year.
Warm Regards,
Julie Barry

Greetings to you all
and wishing you good
health, a prosperous
and happy new year.
Easter is coming fast
upon us as the year
is galloping past us.
It is great to see blue
skies instead of the
smoke filled ones of December and January.
As you are now all aware the previous
manager resigned and I will be here until we
recruit the new manager.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank
you all for the friendship, cooperation and
support you have shown me in managing
Paling Court.
Staff changes have occurred and we
welcomed Elizabeth Roodt who has returned
to Carrington after a short break to take up
the Clinical Manager position, RN Katherine
Helmi has joined the team full time, Jenni
Streeter has replaced Joanne who has gone
for a tree change to Werombi Court as the
Admin Assistant, as well as RN Bernadette
Curral who is also having a change to
Werombi Court.
We are in the process of recruiting an
additional RN for the evening shifts. RN
Joanna Biason has been appointed for 5
evening shifts a fortnight, recruiting
continues for the remaining 9 shifts.
Ashleigh Kloot was appointed to the Leisure
and Lifestyle team after being a carer with
the team since 2015. There are roster
changes for 2020 where the carers will
commence shifts earlier, this has enabled
more time for staff to attend to your care in
the morning before breakfast.
Eye drops will be administered in the
morning by night staff while you are still in
bed which will be more comfortable and
beneficial for you.
December was very busy with the lead up to
Christmas and all the social activities for
both residents and families.
Three Christmas parties were held in the
recreation centre and were a huge success
for all. We also celebrated Ruth Cornhill’s
102nd birthday on the 12 December at one
of the parties.
The fires in the area caused concern for all
of us, some staff had to stay home and
defend their property or be evacuated and
unfortunately some of the resident’s families
were affected, with one losing her home on
the north coast.
The fire services did an awesome job
keeping us safe. On Thursday 27th February
2020 Carrington staff and residents
participated in a yellow day, wearing yellow
and collecting a gold coin donation to
recognise and thank the Fire Services.
Resident’s from Queen Victoria in Picton
were evacuated to a number of facilities
including Carrington, spending about 4 days.
The recent rains brought much relief to the
drought and fire issues.

Camden experienced local flooding resulting in staff to be detoured and as some staff are
not familiar with the local street lost and finally arriving some hours later as traffic was also
a factor or in some cases they were unable to travel. It is certainly good to recognise staff
are able to meet these challenges and continue to provide care to our residents at these
times.
Rodney Singleton who resides in the Camden Suites has been very busy making the most
interesting Lego models and has done an amazing job, considering he has to do it one
handed when most of us would be hard pressed to manage the construction with 2 hands. I
have included some pictures of his construction of the Taj Mahal and the Harry Potter
Castle.

Leisure and Lifestyle Update Hello All! Our Leisure and Lifestyle Team have had a busy few months with Christmas parties and end of year festivities. The rain and heat have not slowed us down though, and we spent January celebrating Australia Day, Chinese New Year, and Robert Burns Day (Scotland). We also had an Elvis impersonator perform at our January Group Day. Every month, residents from all four facilities come together in the Recreation Hall to socialise and participate in a different themed event. Love was in the air for Valentines Day in February! Each Residential facility hosted a variety of fun Valentine's Activities, followed by a romantic lunch for all our beautiful Carrington couples. This was a fantastic event, and we received some wonderful feedback from the participants.
We now have regular Intergenerational Playgroups in each of our facilities. Werombi Court,
Grasmere Terrace, and Mary Mackillop hold them once a month, and Paling Court host once
a fortnight with one of these being a Saturday.
These have been hugely successful, and our residents have expressed their enjoyment at
these playgroups.
We are also continuing with our Intergenerational Dance Group throughout 2020. This is
held once a month in partnership with the Early Learning Hub Preschool, Spring Farm. On
the third Tuesday of every month, the residents will meet in the Recreation Hall to
participate in a dance class with the children. Our first one took place on the 18th February,
and there were lots of smiles, laughter, and positive engagement shared between the
generations.
Resident & Relative Newsletter Autumn 2020 PAGE 13
There are some exciting events planned for March, with Footy Tipping resuming on the
14th, St Patrick’s Day on the 17th, Harmony Day on the 21st, and Greek Independence
Day on the 25th.
On the 26th March, Carrington will be inundated with all things Swedish, including the infamous ABBA. Carrington invites all the Dancing Queens (and Kings), to Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! Their best moves and perform an ABBA Song on stage. The name of the game is to gather your Super Trouper group and sing/ lip synch to your favourite ABBA Song. The residents will be the judges and The winner takes it all!!! The event is open to all Residential, Independent Living and Community residents so don your disco outfits and head down to the Recreation Hall for 10.00am. You are guaranteed a good laugh!
Due to the success of our Hatching Program last year, Henny Penny will return to each of the facilities on the 30th March. Each facility will be given 3 live baby chicks and 12 fertilised eggs that will hatch over the next 10 days.
The residents are able to watch the chicks hatching in their incubator and once they are transferred to the hatchery, they can be picked up and nursed by residents and staff. Last year, you could be guaranteed to find at least one person eagerly watching the baby chicks playing and we are very excited to have this experience again this Easter!
Please see over the page for some photos of last year’s Henny Penny experience.
Resident & Relative Newsletter Autumn 2020 PAGE 14
Since the beginning of the year, each facility has implemented a ‘Bright Ideas’ Box. The aim of this project is to give resident, families, and staff the opportunity to provide ideas and feedback about the Leisure and Lifestyle Program. These boxes are located near the L & L offices or main activity areas, so please feel free to suggest new activity ideas, bus trip outings, themed days, or anything else that you would like to see on the monthly activity programs. Another initiative that we have implemented that aims to involve families more is to hold night resident/relative meetings in the facilities every four months. Please keep an eye out for these on your notice boards and monthly activity calendars. From March, our calendars will be available for viewing on the Carrington website, so you can keep up to date with the activities being held in our Residential facilities. On another note, how nice was the life and love advice that our Werombi Court residents shared with us as part of Valentines Day? You can see some of the pictures by heading to our Carrington Facebook page. Kind Regards, Belinda Whinnery Leisure and Lifestyle Coordinator

The Latest from Hotel Services Dear Residents and Family
Members,
Welcome to the Hotel
Services Column.
I hope you all had a great
time at Christmas, New
Year, and the ensuing
holiday period. It has been
a hot and humid summer
and we are certainly looking forward to
cooler temperatures in Autumn. I am sure
that the lovely rain we have had over the last
few weeks has been appreciated.
Hotel Services at Carrington is responsible
for Food Production, Food Service,
Housekeeping, and Laundry Services for our
residents.
Carrington’s menus run in 5 week cycles, and
are changed twice a year at the beginning of
Summer (November), and Winter (May),
which enables us to incorporate seasonal
produce.
Each update of the menu is assessed by an
accredited dietitian to ensure the meals are
compliant to aged care nutrition guidelines. A
snapshot of our meal offering is as follows:
Breakfast
The menu provides plenty of choice over a
variety of meals. We serve continental
breakfast on Tuesday, Thursday and
Saturdays. Full breakfast with egg dishes is
served on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and
Sunday.
Morning Teas
On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday we
serve a variety of homemade morning tea
items in the form of sweet and savoury
cakes/slices, biscuits, scones etc.
Lunch
At lunch, two main meal items accompanied
with a starch and vegetable dish are on offer.
Dessert is served 6/7 days (Sunday
excepted). Residents have the option to
choose a salad or sandwich for lunch. Fish
and Chips for Friday lunch and Roast for
Sunday lunch are a Carrington tradition and
sacrosanct. (Please be warned that any
attempt to change this tradition will
cause riots at Carrington!)
Dinner
Wednesday and Sunday are soup nights,
where residents are served hearty soups and
dessert. During remaining week nights, we
serve a light soup, a hot main meal with
vegetables and starch. We also provide
residents with the option to choose a salad or
sandwich for lunch.
Supper
For any late night sacking, we provide
salads, sandwiches, biscuits, ice creams,
cereals, cold, and hot beverages on request.
24/7
At any given times, residents have access to
tea/coffee making facilities, biscuits, and
fresh fruit. Stone fruits are in season now,
and Chef has been purchasing Nectarines,
Peaches, and varieties of Plums this summer
for our residents to enjoy.
In addition to a five week rotation menu, we
also provide specials and theme days at
lunch to our residents. This quarter we
delivered on the following theme/special
days:

December
Traditional Christmas Lunch: Roast
Turkey and Baked Citrus Ham with Port
and Cranberry Jus. Roasted Pumpkin,

Live Cooking @ Carrington: A
traditional Aussie BBQ is being cooked
for our residents as part of our Live
Cooking Initiative. This is designed to
engage the resident’s sense of smell
and hearing. Head Chef Paul is going
around to all the facilities and cooking
an awesome BBQ right in the dining
rooms
14th February: Our residents
celebrated Valentine’s Day organised by
our fabulous L + L Team– a special Red
Velvet Cake was served for dessert
25th February: Fresh Pancakes with
whipped butter and maple syrup for
Morning Tea to celebrate Shrove
Tuesday.
The menus are displayed throughout the
facilities within the dining rooms. A copy of
the menu is printed on the last page of this
newsletter, and will give you an idea of what
is served to our residents in a week.
Diet Aide is a valuable resource on my team,
and this person is responsible for collating
likes, dislikes, food allergies, dietitian/
speech pathologist instructions, and then
forwarding them to the kitchen and the
dining room staff. Diet Aide is also able to
meet and discuss preferences of residents
and families, and offer some solutions to
issues that they may be experiencing. A
meeting with the Diet Aide can be arranged
through the office of the Care Service
Manager.
In addition to the above, the Hotel Services
Teams have implemented Texture Modified
Moulded Food for some of our Residents who
have swallowing difficulties. This has been
very well received by our residents and
many have commented about the improved
presentation/taste. All facilities will have this
implemented by June 2020.
Hotel Services have been very actively
looking for improvements in our transport
services to ensure we maintain a safe
temperature for both our hot and cold food
as per NSW Food Authority requirements.
Later this year, you will see a new
Temperature Controlled Food Delivery Cart.
We have also sourced new cooking
equipment for our serveries close to dining
rooms. We will soon introduce hot, crispy
chips and freshly baked morning snacks. We
will be introducing many new menu items in
the near future as we complete the upgrade/
fitout of new equipment.
Rocksalt
We continue to provide delicious meals and
home made sweet treats at Rocksalt. Each
day there is blackboard specials to entice,
Soup of the Day, and of course the ever
popular Sunday Roast. We also celebrated
Australia Day at Rocksalt which was very
popular! Keep an eye out for our Mother’s
Day Luncheon Specials which I am sure will
be very popular.
