HP Networking Achieves Security Certification From Government

HP has announced that HP Networking has received the Evaluation Assurance Level 2 (EAL 2) Common Criteria (CC) certification for HP Routers. This is the first time the Department of Information Technology, Government of India has issued this certification and provides the appropriate level of security assurance.

Each day, organisations are faced with numerous security threats, from both internal and external environments. To protect themselves and stay ahead of these threats, organisations need to put in place the latest and most sophisticated security solutions to protect data in critical infrastructure.

“As organisations and government departments increasingly opt to computerize and automate their operations, there is a dependency on IT to foster collaboration and deliver efficiency. Data protection and integrity is of paramount importance in this environment’, said Neelam Dhawan, Managing Director, HP India. “The EAL 2 certification is added recognition of the security, robustness and reliability of HP’s offerings and a reflection of HP’s ability to evolve our offerings to meet next generation threats.”

The CC security framework is an international standard (ISO/IEC 15408) for ensuring that IT/networking products conform to stringent security requirements. It is considered a prerequisite in many government procurement requirements in India and abroad. HP Networking received the certification under the Indian common criteria certification scheme, which is the national scheme and covers the HP MSR-SR series of routers. This is the first certificate that has been issued by Standardization Testing and Quality Certification (STQC- http://www.stqc.nic.in/), which is a part of Department of Information Technology, Government of India.

“Over the past decade, there has been large proliferation of IT in every sector of society, including business and Government. With information explosion, the industry is facing a challenging task to manage, store and prevent vulnerable information from cyber attacks from across the organization”, said Hon. Shri. Kapil Sibal, Union Cabinet Minister, Communications & Information Technology, Government of India.

HP Networking, a component of the HP Converged Infrastructure, provides enterprises with a complete networking portfolio that includes consulting and management services, operations software and hardware. The portfolio spans from data centre networking, enterprise routing, security, LAN switching, branch office and mobility. Through its TippingPoint acquisition, HP Networking provides a complete set of security solutions that address today’s sophisticated security threats.

HP Converged Infrastructure is key to an Instant-On Enterprise. In a world of continuous connectivity, the Instant-On Enterprise embeds technology in everything it does to serve customers, employees, partners and citizens with whatever they need, instantly.

WD’s Channel Partners Are Well-Positioned To Reap Significant Benefits

Sushil BandiCountry ManagerIndian Sub-continent, Western Digital

How was the last year from the per-spective of technology innovations?

We have witnessed certain trends in technology that point towards direction that storage peripherals will now take. To begin with, faster interfaces such as USB 3.0 and FireWire became immensely popular. SATA III desktop drives have been introduced in anticipation of a prevalent 6Gb/s ecosystem by mid 2011. While certain drives in our external and portable ranges have had USB 3.0 and FireWire 800 for some time, we also became the first vendor to upgrade our entire desktop range to 6Gb/s. The increase in capacity has clearly kept up with the surge in content; evolved interfaces will now ensure faster processing & transfers, and compatibility for newer features. Further, form factors have continued to shrink – WD introduced the world’s highest capacity 3 TB in a 3.5”desktop drive and 750 GB in a 2.5” notebook drive – and performance has reached new highs – WD’s VelociRaptor 600 GB became the first 10,000 RPM SATA drive. The most interesting development however has been the growing prevalence of HD and networking in homes, indicating a pervasive convergence of storage and entertainment. WD has created a new segment altogether by introducing the WD TV Live Hub media center, that will give Indian households their first experience of a ‘connected home.’What kind of technology trends do you foresee?

Convergence and the never-ending surge in digital technologies will drive the growth of the storage peripherals market. We plan to ride on, or more appropriately, drive the wave of personal digital content and enterprise content. The continued exponential growth of digital content combined with convergence of storage and entertainment technologies will shape vendors’ plans for the year ahead. The ability to create, store, and share personal digital content and enterprise content in a secure manner will gain prominence. Networking and remote access will become simpler and more affordable, and coupled with the huge surge in the smart phone market; consumers will reap benefits of a synergy of ‘access.’ What kind of direction do you want to

give to the channel partners? The right strategy for vendors would be to

plan their business with the most consistent vendor. Clearly, considering the direction in which the storage peripherals segment is headed, partners will have the opportunity to cater to a much larger consumer base than ever before. Additionally, extended product portfolios will demand that partners try their best to push up volumes by focusing on a consistent vendor, as opposed to best-selling product categories. Which are the technology and skill sets the partners should ideally invest in?

Improved skills-sets and technical know-how can yield significant benefits for channel partners this year. For instance, consider the evolving ecosystem of PC components: it demands a certain amount of awareness on up-gradation and compatibility to sell a 3 TB or a SATA III drive to first-time users. Similar is the case with a wide range of home entertainment & networking devices. In times of consolidation, partners can differentiate themselves from the competition through such value-addition. Do they need to be vertical focussed or how should they approach the mar-ket?

The channel is well-positioned to reap significant benefits from the evolving go-to-market strategies of leading vendors. Currently, vendors are undertaking a consolidation of their channel base as they hit the market with extended and diversified product portfolios. There is a clear opportunity for partners who step up to cater to the huge demand with a sensitively-priced basket of storage devices for all needs. Congruently, vendors will prefer to work with fewer national distributors, thereby

ensuring that partners push the brand and its extensive portfolio. Predictably, this will result in them operating at lower margins, but will push volumes up significantly. The right strategy for partners, therefore, will to plan their business with the best and most consistent vendor. From your perspective, how are you addressing the market?

We are focusing on B & C class cities, and our efforts are primarily in the direction of expanding the channel base and providing fast & effective after-sales service. Apart from expanding our reach and distribution, WD is also trying to engage with consumers in these markets to increase awareness on storage technology and products. We organize road shows at regular intervals in B & C class cities, and they have turned out to be a very beneficial exercise in terms of consumer engagement.

Western Digital will continue to enhance its product portfolio through technological innovations, and strengthen its presence in organized retail over the next few quarters as consumers will want to buy these products in the right ambience. What will be your core focus areas? Where would you invest?

‘Connected Homes’ will be our focus. Though WD TV Live and WD TV Live Hub introduced this concept to the Indian living room, we have a slew of devices lined up for launch in the next few months that will make home networking easy and affordable. AV drives will also be a key focus segment, as storage is becoming as essential feature of more & more personal and enterprise devices. In short, Western Digital will attempt to continue to stay ahead of the technology curve by bridging the gap between personal and professional content creation, storage, and sharing. l

CHANNEL buzz

Emerson Network Power has proactively taken care of its partners’ priorities and business needs, in a manner

that is most beneficial to their long-term growth and profitability. In the past one year, Emerson has reached out to the partners across the country and gauge how they are placed in an increasingly competitive market and ever-evolving technology ecosystem.

It was the year 2010, when the company launched its partner portal that has received heartening feedback from the channel. As it happens to be a 24x7 nexus for the partners with Emerson, the portal has built-in features that allow them to track & record promotional schemes, benefits accrued, and annual targets. It also attempts to help them promote their business within their own circle of potential customers. A partner simply has

to download one and edit it as per his advertising message. We hope the partners have found these tools useful.”

Emerson has been bringing more partners in the fold especially in tier 3, tier 4 cities. To complement a wider range of products and its ‘solutions’ approach, the company is also looking to appoint Vertical Business Partners who will drive its business in targeted verticals, and spearhead foray into emerging ones. Emerson continues to add value to its partners by opening up vistas for partners to participate in its other brands/products/solutions which are acquired by Emerson. Likes of Knurr Rack solutions, Avocent KVMs, PDUs and other IT suits available for the Infrastructure Management and high end Aperture for data center Infra Management. Titled ’10 ka Dum,’ the scheme’s objective was to push the sale of UPS systems and help partners create a profitable proposition for themselves with a well planned purchase pattern for Emerson products. Partners were rewarded with a slew of high-end gadgets such as Mac Books depending on their performance. Additionally, Emerson continued the popular ‘Liebert Warrior Program’ to incentivize its Enterprise

Business Partners (EBPs) and reward the best performing ones with the title of ‘Liebert Warrior.’ Finally, the company rewarded the best performing channel partners on sale of Liebert ITON range of UPS under the ‘Buy to Fly’ programme. Following enthusiastic participation from the partners, ‘Liebert Warrior’ and ‘Buy to Fly’ are being renewed every 6 months.

Roadmap AheadIn the future, the primary focus of

Emerson Network Power will be on introducing web-based partner training modules. The company had tied-up with an independent body in 2010 and tried to gauge partners’ interest in web-based training, and the results indicate their readiness to try out a more accessible and easier training method. Emerson will also introduce modules to equip partners with necessary skill-sets to sell its latest range of Data Center Infrastructure

Management solutions. Partner’s sales force will also be a part of Emerson training programs to improve their technical and soft-skills.

In the EndThe company has been now gearing

up for the next phase of market growth and expansion plans in the country. Emerson believes that there is a large base of customers in the Tier 1 and Tier II cities and a huge need for IT infrastructure. Keeping this in mind the company is looking for expanding its presence.

This year Emerson’s focus is on the entire range of new Products and Channels. The Channel Programme represents a core component of its overall strategic investment in channel resources. Its Programme will enable and support channel partners by providing access to key marketing and sales tools. n

Please elaborate on the initiative of NComputing to provide computing ac-cess to 600 schools in Bihar?

Government wants to supply a massive computer education program, to 600 government schools across Bihar state. The program is aimed to provide computer access to around 5 lakhs students across Bihar for the first time. NComputing, who is a leader of ultra-low cost computing technology, has proposed its shared computing technology to accomplish the desired task. Each of 600 government schools will have a 10-seat computing lab with 2 desktop PCs and 8 NComputing systems. The decision to deploy NComputing’s low-cost and eco-friendly solution establishes the Bihar government as an innovator in educational computing and a model for other governments considering similar projects. The government has decided to go for NComputing’s X550 series product to offer low-cost and low-power hardware solutions in schools across the state. NComputing’s solutions not only saved deployment costs, but the ease of installation, low electricity and maintenance cost made it easy for the school authorities to increase the number of computers seat. Your model seems to be emerging as “the” best for providing low cost com-puter education in India. What made you so successful vis-à-vis other tech-nologies?

We really felt proud and honored when we see that our solutions are actively contributing to socio -economic development in India. Our technology has proven itself at every opportunity to empower the next generation. Be it an

Andhra Pradesh ICT Implementation or this recent partnership with MKCL for establishing 1,000 adult learning centers, NComputing’s technology has made its mark. One of the reasons which made us successful is definitely the initiatives of such government units who are determined to provide maximum number of computer seats at a minimum cost and chose the NComputing desktop virtualization technology. NComputing solution is based on a simple fact: today’s PCs are so powerful that the vast majority of students only use a small fraction of the computer’s capacity. NComputing’s desktop virtualization solution taps this unused capacity so that it can be simultaneously used by many students. Each student connects their own monitor, keyboard and mouse to an NComputing device which is then connected to the shared PC. Each student gets a full PC experience. The NComputing devices are easy to deploy, rugged, and only use 1 Watt of electricity. The low electricity usage is critical because electricity in India can be expensive and often unreliable. With NComputing, the government will use 90% less electricity compared to a traditional all-PC lab.We are bullish for India. We feel that there is an immense opportunity which lies for NComputing in India. When we started off in India, it ranked in the top 10 market for us. However, within a span of 3 year India is among the top 2 markets for NComputing. We really feel that in coming years India would be one of our biggest markets worldwide. Recently everyone has been talking about government sector being the biggest customers. What do you think is the reason for the same and its sig-

nificance as well? Global shifts towards increased

deployment of IT by governments emerged in the nineties, with the advent of the World Wide Web. With the increase in Internet and mobile connections, the citizens are learning to exploit their new mode of access in wide ranging ways. The concept of e-governance has its origins in India during the seventies with a focus on development of in- house government applications in the areas of defense, economic monitoring, planning and the deployment of IT to manage data intensive functions related to elections, census, tax administration etc. The efforts of the National Informatics Center (NIC) to connect all the district headquarters during the eighties was a very significant development. From the early nineties, IT technologies were supplemented by ICT technologies to extend its use for wider sectoral applications with policy emphasis on reaching out to rural areas and taking in greater inputs from NGOs and private sector as well. Quite a number of state governments have initiated measures to introduce information technology and its tools in the governance process. Most of these states are using these applications for improving service delivery to their citizens. They are moving from manual processes to on-line delivery by using conveniently located service centers in public places. For governments, the more overt motivation to shift from manual processes to IT-enabled processes may be increased efficiency in administration and service delivery, but this shift can be conceived as a worthwhile investment with potential for returns.

How important do you think is public private partnerships?

Business StrategyE-Governance enhances the efficacy of

citizen and government interaction. This has been made possible by public-private sector partnerships leading to the availability of more affordable and rugged PCs to suit operating conditions in the hinterland and deepening Internet penetration. With the realization of e-Governance projects in India, the time has come to review the role of the public sector as well as private sector to speed up the process of implementation of different projects related to e-Governance. Government agencies throughout the world are considering and conducting e-Governance initiatives with the help of private players; the scene in India is much the same. Today, most states in the country have drafted state-specific IT policies that are in various stages of implementation. The successfully proven example of Public-Private partnership from deployment of shared computing technology in 5000 government schools in Andhra Pradesh. The central government has also taken several initiatives to advance ICT usage across all government bodies as this will benefit the common man. These include the roll-out of the National eGovernance Plan (NeGP), the launch of Mission 2007, and the formation of e-Panchayats across the country.Increased private investment is imperative to expand infrastructure and provide greater access to quality higher education in India. E&Y - FICCI report emphasizes that PPPs could be an effective mechanism for attracting much needed private sector investment in the Indian Higher education system without diluting the regulatory oversight of the Government and other regulators. Please list some key achievements of NComputing in India so far?

NComputing has already sold more than 2 million seats globally, and around 15 million people uses NComputing every day in 140 countries in less than three years. NComputing began operations in India in 2007 and has been recognized for its role in bringing truly affordable computing to schools, hospitals, factories and business. NComputing is working with nearly 15 states in India to pilot or implement the shared computing solution and deployed over 200,000 seats. Some of key implementations done by NComputing in India are 50,000 seats in 5000 Government schools in Andhra Pradesh, 31,000 seats in ESIC and 10,000 seats across 1200 centers of Maharastra Knowledge Corporation Limited. A major benefit that you offer, apart from the saving on the initial hardware cost, is that on saving electricity spend.

Do you have an estimate on how much the cost has been saved by these in-stitutes who implemented this technol-ogy?

Our technology lowers electrical consumption by 90% or more and this is critical in India due to the shortage and cost of power.

Moreover the energy savings translates into environmental benefit as well since most electricity is generated with coal-fired plants that spew pollutants and carbon dioxide. The carbon credits are actually available for the schools and business that use the technology. In fact, there is a school in Canada that changed its entire computer lab to be carbon-neutral by installing NComputing and planting 100 trees to offset the limited CO2 emissions. It was awarded the Green School award.

What are your future plans for enterprise market in India? What value proposition from your side in terms of technology/product for them to invest/buy particularly after bitter experience of recession?

We plan to aggressively grow in the education and business sectors. We are

seeing great success with school systems throughout India and in business sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, small/medium business, and call centers. In the past, Enterprises were more focused on growth and keeping pace with expansion - cost was not the biggest factor. But with the economic slowdown, CIOs have come under intense pressure to cut costs while maintaining service levels. They are no just trying to cut capital expenditures, but also operational costs including labor costs associated with supporting the Enterprise computing infrastructure. NComputing is the ideal solution for CIOs looking to cut capital and operating costs 50% or more. This statement probably sounds too good to be true so let me briefly introduce the technology. The NComputing solution is based on a simple fact: today’s PCs are so powerful that the vast majority of applications only use a small fraction of the computer’s capacity. NComputing enables a single PC to be virtualized so that many users can tap the unused capacity and share it as if each person had their own computer. Depending on the computer and the NComputing product, up to 30 users can share a single PC. More than one million

NComputing seats have been deployed by 25,000 organizations in just the past 2 years. And as mentioned, the NComputing devices use only 5 Watts of electricity. If the computer users are in an air-conditioned area, then the lower electricity use results in lower heat output which reduces cooling costs as well. On average our clients save 50% on purchase costs, 70% on operating costs and 90% on electricity costs.

We are pleasantly surprised by enterprises interest in our product. We recently announced that the Andhra Pradesh is deploying NComputing in 5,000 government high schools to benefit 1.8 million students. On the heels of that success, we are now in discussions with many other government ICT projects across the country to accelerate their computerization programs. In the business sector, we are rapidly building our dealer network to penetrate tier 2 and tier 3 cities. We recently announced that Redington will be a distributor for our products and they have already trained over a hundred of their dealers. Do you think that the solution would be sustainable over time?

We are one of the most unique technology companies in that our business model is built on serving the needs of schools and business that are not rich and can not afford expensive technology. Our products have already been deployed in over 100 countries from Azerbaijan to Zimbabwe. In Macedonia for example, the government has rolled out a 1:1 computing initiative wherein every student has a computing station at their desk using NComputing. As PCs get even more powerful, we will be able to get 30, 40, 50, even 100 users to share a PC and our costs will go down even further. Our mission is to bring affordable, eco-friendly computing to the next billion people, and we have a long way to go, but we are definitely on the right path.It is predictable that a disruptive tech-nology such as yours meets with stiff resistance from the established players in the industry. What have been such experiences, in your case, and how have you been handling the same?

Anytime there is a disruptive technology, there are winners and losers. The winners are usually those that see the real potential of how the technology benefits the user and adjust their business model accordingly. The customer is always right and the disruptive technology will always reach them. The losers are those that nervously defend their model and lose sight of the customer

need. In India, since the computerization drive is still in full swing, there has been little resistance from partners to take up our solution and actively partner with us.You say that NComputing seek busi-ness opportunities even during reces-sion because of cost effective solu-tions. Can you please elaborate on the same?

In the past, Enterprises were more focused on growth and keeping pace with expansion - cost was not the biggest factor. But with the economic slowdown, companies have come under intense pressure to cut costs while maintaining service levels. They are no just trying to cut capital expenditures, but also operational costs including labor costs associated with supporting the Enterprise computing infrastructure. On average our clients save 50% on purchase costs, 70% on operating costs and 90% on electricity costs. Do you really think this will solve prob-lem of millions of people who don’t have proper access to education? How does that address the problem of connectiv-ity as in India there are issues with the infrastructure?

We are humble enough to know that we are merely an educational tool that the teachers need to bring the best education to the future workers and leaders of the country. We firmly believe that computer access is important, but teacher training, proper infrastructure, books and supplies are just as important. We are doing our part by bringing the cost of computing access

down by at least half and the cost of running computers by at least 70%. The issue of connectivity is important, but it does not hinder the deployment of our technology because all of the educational software can simply be loaded onto the PC. When connectivity is available, the PC simply connects to the Internet and the students also get the benefit of the Internet. So there is no need to wait for connectivity to use our computing model.

There have been some reports that in certain schools the labs have not yet been set up, and it is quite behind schedule. Do you feel that NComputings’ success has been selective in the whole implementation project?

NComputing has from its side has provided all the equipments for setting up of the lab to all the vendors who have won the tender bid for shared computing, however the implementation entails infrastructure set up and other peripheral requirements, on which NComputing has no control and it is the responsibility of the vendor to meet up with the deadline. From NComputing’s side we extend all possible cooperation that could expedite the implementation of the whole set up.Why do you think, that your technology is so successful in Indian Market?

Organizations are leveraging the power of desktop virtualization. Some large BPO companies in India who were facing challenges in terms of underutilized desktops and high maintenance costs have been able to save significantly on per agent per year costs by deploying desktop virtualization. Moreover desktop virtualization has facilitated BPO agents to work from any PC in any office. At the same time, BPO companies have the flexibility of shifting processes and agents across desktops, offices and even cities at short notice. BPOs also have the flexibility to deliver services from secondary sites in case of any disaster at a primary site and vice versa, giving them the flexibility of delivering services from multiple locations, adding value to their operational risk management strategies. Desktop virtualization has also increased PC utilization for many companies in India as the same PC can be used across multiple shifts, agents and processes. Additionally all application rights and user permissions to the applications are maintained centrally thereby improving the overall security of application access by users. Desktop virtualization is increasingly being used across all customer segments like Education, Manufacturing, Hospitals, branch offices, IT/ITES. We are seeing high interest and adoption from SMBs. l

most obvious example of this being the widespread acceptance of the social network. Needs have catalyzed growth, and according to research data from 2010, the Cloud market has already surpassed $37.8 billion and is continuing to grow towards $121.1 billion in Y2015. The continual growth of the Cloud market is absolute related to the explosive development of the “end products”, over 1 billion users have been accumulated since the beginning of the Internet’s speedy growth in 1999 through 2010. It is expected that due to universal mobile device usage, the number of total Internet users will increase to 10 billion in only another 10 years, by 2020! With industry needs and each national government’s promotion, it can be said that Cloud Computing has truly entered its stage of growth.

IDC’s recent report further reaffirms the growth in the virtualization space. As per IDC, with shipments of virtualized servers growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14 percent from 2009 to 2014, it is expected that the robust growth in server virtualization will continue through 2014 as datacenter adoption is increasingly considered mainstream in mature economies and as organizations in emerging regions look for datacenter efficiencies. As more enterprises use virtual servers, they will be searching for security solutions that will protect the server hosting the virtualized environment; the hypervisor; and shield the virtual servers from malware and hacker attacks. With data center consolidation, along with the rise of cloud computing, virtualization and VDI, more and more computing power and data itself are moving into virtual world. from many different sources, so at this time, everyone can acknowledge that using Cloud Computing will allow data transmission to become quicker and more easily managed; however, there is a common concern about information security, and all of a sudden a shadow has been cast on Cloud’s originally bright future. This tells us that information security is an extremely important cornerstone in the development of Cloud Computing!

The prospect of data security in cloud computing has security professionals and CXO community taking a cautious approach. The main reason springs from the sense that they do not feel they have a good control of the data out in the cloud. One of the more critical issued is the relative lack of control of end user, especially when the user is outside the perimeter of the enterprise. What they need to look at?

It is important for the CXO community to look at products or solutions that are designed to give a security boost in virtualized and cloud environments. Solution that is designed to give enterprises control of security for data stored in public, private or hybrid clouds is ideal. This is because, while cloud service providers have responsibility, enterprises are left holding the bag in the case of a cloud security breach, a solution as mentioned earlier is designed to stop all that by leveraging

encryption key-management technology as a service. Such solution works by giving enterprises control over their own encryption key, ensuring that they are the only ones who can access sensitive data. In the eventuality of a breach, anyone without that key would not be able to access the infrastructure.

It is also critical for CXOs to look at a solution that can help them to avoid vendor lock-in. If one looks at what the cloud does in terms of controlling data, it poses some new challenges. A hosted key management and data encryption service designed to give enterprises more control over data stored in public, private or hybrid clouds. So, it also addresses the challenge of control. A hosted key management and data encryption service will certainly facilitate the movement between the datacenter and the cloud and enterprises can decide when and where keys are released and secure volumes are accessed as well as establish accountability over data access and key deployment with logging and audit functionality.

A hosted key management and data encryption service will help the enterprises to go out there and take advantage of the cloud economics and the flexibility that the cloud has to offer. In addition it will secure their cloud environment effectively. l

Business Focus

T he market in India has matured and evolved a lot in recent years and people have been expecting more and more from vendors. The IT vendors have been trying really hard to meet those expectations

and in many ways have been successful. The unique aspect of the Indian market is that it has become very much value conscious. Every brand is known for its own strengths. Today’s consumer wants the best in a given budget and defines his own “best” – be it in quality, aesthetics, features or service.

Zebronics has been in IT peripherals and consumer electronics business for more than 13 years. The company has understood the market well and today Zebronics can confidently say that it has reached a place where people know the brand and its strengths. Currently, the company has a very strong presence in distribution centres and markets all over the country. Speaking on this front, Mr. Rajesh Doshi, Director, Top Notch Infotronix India Pvt. Ltd. says, “This has evolved to be our USP, our strength, with our extremely wide product range we have something to suit every customer.”

Currently, Zebronics has a very large range and variety of products which helps the channel partners in doing their business. Zebronics keep on updating its products regularly and keep the product range fresh and latest. On this front, Mr. Rajesh says, “Our products also have very good value for money proposition and well priced over competing offerings. We have a dedicated, energetic and young team throughout India and a strong service set up for after sales support. Zebronics tag line has been to stay “always ahead” and we will continue to remain committed to growth.”

Go-To-Market StrategyIn the trade markets, Zebronics has been recognized for its

continuous product-line updates and fresh introductions. The company believes in not just keeping pace with technology but in many cases, to be forward-looking and define the technology that will become the standard of tomorrow. Zebronics regularly take feedback from consumers as well from the channel and make changes in the products if required. Apart from that the company use to the study international trends and with its understanding of Indian market, it is able to quickly forecast what will become the next “change” for this country. With all its products, Zebronics attempt to take the industry standard and then make them better with the Zebronics touch.

As a case in point, Zebronics recent new introductions are good examples. The ZebMate 75 pocket media player

redefined battery life with a 75-hour run on a single charge. The ZebCinema 4.3 product again leads its category with the largest possible screen, an ultra-bright 4.3 inches. The ZebStation digital music player is again a first providing a facility to directly play media files stored on external media like memory cards or USB flash drives on a high-fi system, without the need for a PC or home audio set-up. Several such innovations are in the pipeline for the coming quarter.

Speaking on this front, Mr. Rajesh says, “Till a few years ago the industry was too conservative and almost entirely driven by price. In recent years this has begun to change and we are going from being just price-driven to value-driven. Consumers don’t mind shelling out that little extra for an added feature or a better quality product, provided a distinct worth can be established.”

Zebronics being a Indian company believes that it understand the consumers better. This helps the company in customizing the products. There is immense potential and growth in the AV

field and this would continue. For instance Zebronics has a very wide lineup of speaker systems and home-theatre set-ups, and speaking purely from that standpoint, Zebronics believe that this sub-segment will be really large - whether with a PC or notebook or even with your television (with growing home theater requirements with economical solutions making it more affordable for many). The performance features, aesthetics, connectivity (wireless for instance) requirements vary with consumers becoming more and more demanding. This is leading to continuous innovation by the manufacturers, which is ultimately a good thing to happen for the industry.

Plan Ahead Zebronics has one of the industry’s widest line-ups of

products in each of categories – with products to suit almost every price point and need. The company plan to come out with a spate of new introductions spanning the various sub-segments of consumer electronics as well as to expand the current range of products. Zebronic’s entire new-product focus in coming years is going to be in consumer electronics. Currently, the company is firming up specific plans. In the coming quarter it will be making a detailed announcement with complete product roadmap for the next two years.

When it comes to home-grown brands, public perception about quality is a big challenge for Indian companies. Having known more as a peripherals brand, the company find it all the more tough in Indian market. However, Zebronics have made concrete efforts specifically to counter this problem over the

last year. To begin with, it has won several media awards and recognitions and its products have been recognized for quality and value in respective categories. With this Zebronics has proved that it is serious and committed towards its customers over long term. In spite of its USP of “best value for money”, quality would never be compromised. Gradually, Zebronics hope to gain market confidence in its products and overcome the perception barrier.

After Sale ServiceZebronics has extensive presence throughout the country.

Its sales branches (currently numbering 26) provide a very good coverage of the market, including next-tier cities. Speaking on this front Mr. Rajesh says, “We agree that after-sales service is a very major consideration, and it is our constant endeavour to be up to consumers’ expectations in this regard. In January, we had announced that enhancing service reach would be our focus for 2011 – we plan to take our existing 60 service centers to 100 by end of the year.”

COMPUTING strategy

The term virtualization broadly describes the separation of a resource or request for a service from the underlying

physical delivery of that service. With virtual memory, for example, computer software gains access to more memory than is physically installed, via the background swapping of data to disk storage. Similarly, virtualization techniques can be applied to other IT infrastructure layers - including networks, storage, laptop or server hardware, operating systems and applications.

This blend of virtualization technologies - or virtual infrastructure - provides a layer of abstraction between computing, storage and networking hardware, and the applications running on it. The deployment of virtual infrastructure is non-disruptive, since the user experiences are largely unchanged. However, virtual infrastructure gives IT staff the advantage of managing pooled resources across the enterprise, allowing IT managers to be more responsive to dynamic organizational needs and to better leverage infrastructure investments.

Server virtualization: Server virtualization consolidates the

opera¬tions of many dispersed servers onto fewer physical machines. Virtualization software decouples a server’s operating system from its physical hardware to create a “virtual machine”. This single software file encapsu¬lates the entire server— its operating system, applications, and virtual hardware. Many virtual machines with heterogeneous operat¬ing systems can be run at the same time on the same physical host server, enabling the sharing of hardware resources.

Implementing server virtualization encompasses multiple layers within the IT infrastructure and goes well beyond physical server consolidation and improved hardware utilization. In its simplest form, server virtualization enables multiple operating systems and applications to utilize a common pool of hardware resources consisting of CPU, memory, network interface cards, and disk capacity. However, to fully recognize the broad array of benefits such as mobility, high availability, and load balancing, it is necessary to expand the virtualized server deployment across multiple physical servers with access to the same shared storage.

Benefits:Operational Maturity

• Fewer software/operating system

Serviceability (important)• Fewer single points of failure introduce

the need for stringent process, policiesTypes of Server VirtualizationAll common techniques for Server

Virtualization are based on the VM (Virtual Machine) model, Operating System level Virtualization and para-Virtual Machine models.

1) Virtual Machine based Server Virtualization

Virtual Machine based Server Virtualization uses Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) or Microsoft Windows server 2008 Hypervisor to coordinate instructions to CPU of the server and the host machine system resources in order to manage the running of guest operating systems without any modification.

2) Operating System level Virtualization

Operating System level Virtualization is achieved by the host system running a single Operating system kernel, and, through its control of guest operating system functionality. Operating System level Virtualization is based on the creation of isolated containers or partitions on a single physical server, and the use of O/S instances for each guest application environment to work independently of the other partitions

3) Para-Virtual MachinePara-Virtual machine (PVM) model

function similar to Virtual machine based virtualization server like uses Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) and enables running multiple operating systems in host server environments like Virtual Machine (VM)-based Server Virtualization. Here is unlike the VM model, Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) used in the Para-Virtual machine (PVM) model, modifies the guest operating system’s code to enable the

running of guest systems. This modification, also sometimes referred to as “porting,” enables faster switching between operating system environments since, in its method of functioning; VMM makes use of privileged system calls less frequently.

Conclusion:With virtualization becoming a

standard IT practice, more organizations are considering it for their IT needs. Choosing the right virtualized environment depends heavily on the organization’s broader IT strategy, the perceived benefits virtualization provides, and the particular features and functions included in the available virtualization solutions.

Virtualization patterns permit information technology assets to be managed and evaluated based on the value they deliver to the organization. Effective virtualization strategies increase organizational flexibility by focusing on delivering capabilities, rather than on installing and managing hardware.

Mr. Rogovsky, Telit’s CEO Oozi Cats called the recent acquisition of the Motorola M2M product line a “perfect match”. The takeover will certainly have a significant strategic impact on the M2M mar-ket. What does this change mean for Telit besides technological and financial aspects?

A merger is always about people, naturally. With the takeover, we will acquire around 40 new colleagues. These are highly professional and very motivated experts around the globe. We now need to ensure that we ideally combine our strengths and generate stimuli for growth. We are already

working intensively on this and can look back on a successful start to our cooperation. So in your eyes the acquisition is a perfect match also on the hu-man resource side?

Yes, definitely. We have a lot in common commitment to a technology that is one of the key foundation stones of future economic development, an extremely high degree of professionalism, a global approach and international orientation. Both the current Telit employees and our new colleagues operate all over the world. For the former Motorola M2M experts, Telit is not a foreign culture. It is, I can only repeat, a perfect match.

What is Telit’s strategy for an inte-gration process?

We always act prudently. First and foremost, the takeover needs to make sense from a business management point of view and provide us with strategic advantages in terms of market coverage, product portfolio and competitive position. If a takeover does not satisfy these criteria, we do not start any process. We do not gamble. I think this is also very important for the employees. We offer stability and growth, which are crucial bases for a healthy corporate culture. Our other corporate takeovers to date also followed this principle. Nonetheless, Motorola is one of

Telit Wireless Solutions has acquired Motorola Solutions’ M2M (machine-to-machine) modules busi-ness unit, and Motorola Solutions’ associated employees have joined Telit. All existing Telit and Mo-

torola products will be maintained and available as originally planned by the separate entities. Telit will continue to support and develop all products as needed, including the G24 family,

the world’s best-known technol-ogy brands. What can you offer the former Motorola employees to make up for this?

For us, M2M is not one division. Telit is M2M. This is an area where we cannot make any compromises. And in this market, we are a very well-known brand. Our new employees will therefore find that we provide the best platform to develop and realise their ideas. The other factor is our success. Despite the adverse global economic conditions and the competition,

Telit can demonstrate consistently profitable growth. Not many in the technology sector can say this. We are a company with a future, and we are actively shaping that future. I’m confident what we are offering is very attractive. And our new colleagues, as well as our customers and partners incidentally, think so too. How does the integration of your new colleagues affect your R&D capacities?

Relatively strongly since R&D is what drives our company. Time and again, we have realised pioneering

achievements and demonstrated our technical expertise and creativity. This is now set for a further massive boost. The acquisition enables us to double our R&D efforts in Israel. Meanwhile 25 people are working in the R&D section there and are becoming our 5th R&D centre. We will continuously increase our R&D efforts in Israel and in all our other research centres. Telit feels well prepared to support and accelerate the rapid growth in the M2M market by delivering the cutting-edge technology and premium support needed to create innovative solutions. l

E Ink and Epson Achieve World-Leading ePaper Resolution

E Ink Holdings and Epson have announced the joint development of a 300-dpi electronic paper device with razor-sharp text and images for ePaper Document Readers. Combining E Ink’s high-resolution ePaper display and Epson’s high-speed display controller platform, the new device will enable the world’s highest resolution ePaper tablets. With sharply improved readability and ease-of-use the ePaper Document Reader is expected to catch on in business and education settings where huge amounts of data have to be processed, as well as in countries that use character-based text, including Japan and China.

Thin, lightweight, energy-efficient eReaders with easy-to-read, paper-like displays have won over consumers, who are snapping up ePaper devices in unprecedented numbers, causing the market to surge. Demand has also been on the rise in business and education, market segments that require exactly what ePaper provides: the fast and accurate display of enormous amounts of information. Applications in these segments demand higher resolution than that offered by today’s 160-dpi displays due to the need to crisply render, with smooth gradations, engineering diagrams, illustrations, Asian characters, and other fine or intricate content. These market segments also demand faster page navigation and sophisticated user interfaces to allow instant viewing of vast amounts of data.

Epson’s high speed controller platform is an ideal choice for developers who wish to develop high resolution eTablets with ease and within a very short period.

IBM Virtual Desktop built on VERDE 5.1 technology, provides an end-to-end desktop management offering that combines virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), integrated offline VDI (using an integrated client-side hypervisor), and remote branch capabilities. The offering supports both Windows and Linux Virtual desktops and can be used on a wide variety of devices.

IBM Virtual Desktop for Smart Business closes the gaps between previous desktop and virtual desktop infrastructure approaches and is based on a key set of attributes designed to help clients get more out of every IT dollar faster.

The new version responds to users need for additional flexibility and portability -- delivering full USB 2.0 peripheral support for integrated offline and online VDI. These enhancements come as the demand for desktop virtualization grows and IBM channel partners are increasingly looking to build services around Virtual Desktop technology to drive new business. Increasingly, corporate IT departments are actively deploying virtualization technologies to reduce the number of assets they have, increase the utilization of the resources they keep and improve the flexibility to change the way those assets are used in the future.

With the industry leading DaVinci Evolved Service Platform (ESP), IMImobile will help WAC members and operator clients shape application development and seeding. Carrier deployments of DaVinci ESP have already enabled 3rd party developers, service providers and content owners to create and launch revenue generating services that utilise core operator assets.
