It is incumbent upon all the citizensincluding new generation youths to preservethe national culture. Failure to preserve thenational culture may lead to underminingnational prestige and integrity, and that mayresult in the disappearance of the State andthe people.

At present, the world nations areexperiencing the impetus of globalization. Some big nations are making an attempt tooverwhelm developing countries politically.Meanwhile, some nations with superiority inwealth and technology are trying to exporttheir culture and traditions to developingnations making better use of modern ICT.

Currently, it is found that most of youthsare under the influence of alien idea, expression and lifestyle through music, finearts, song and dance and modes of dress.

The advancement in science andtechnology is a good sign. But the people arerequired to make their idea, knowledge andway of thinking new and innovative to keeppace with changes and developments.

In the meantime, the new generationyouths are to avoid copying music, song anddance and modes of dress of alien nations. And all are to remain vigilant against theinfiltration of modes of dress, expressionand lifestyle that are contrary to Myanmarculture.

The preservation of culture andtradition is indispensable for a nation or arace. All in all, the entire national people areto live with modes of dress that are in line withMyanmar culture and traditions. Only then, will they be able to preserve and promotetheir national prestige and integrity.

Gun rights activists cheer upon hearing the newsfrom US Supreme Court that Americans have a

constitutional right to bear arms, ending a ban onowning handguns in Washington, DC in its first

ruling on gun rights in 70 years.—INTERNET

Mayors: Gun ruling won’tstop prevention efforts

WASHINGTON, 27June—Washington’sblanket ban on handgunswill fall and tight gun lawsin places like Chicago andSan Francisco are sure tocome under attack. Butmost of the nation’sfirearms regulations willprobably stay on thebooks, and some

politicians said Thurs-day’s Supreme Courtdecision won’t hinder theirefforts to preventbloodshed. The high courtstruck down the Districtof Columbia’s ban onhandguns, ruling thatAmericans can keep gunsat home for self-defense.It was the justices’ first-

ever pronouncement onthe meaning of gun rightsunder the SecondAmendment.

But the court said theright to bear arms is notabsolute and suggestedthat the ruling should notaffect federal restrictionson the sale of guns or whomay own them and wherethey may be carried.

“In limiting its opinionto the matter of self-defense, and in saying theright is not absolute, theUnited States SupremeCourt decision today is anexplicit statement ofsupport for cities all acrossAmerica who are creatingreasonable measures tolimit the ability of thosewho will do harm, whowill maim, who will buy, carry weapons illegally,”Philadelphia MayorMichael Nutter said.

US elections: Obama and Clinton holdfirst joint rally

UNITY, NEW HAMPSHIRE, 27 June—Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton todaywill hold their first public event together since Clinton withdrew from the Demo-cratic nomination fight, as they seek to rally Clinton's supporters behind Obamaand regroup the Democratic party for the upcoming general election fight.

The Democrats hope the rally will encourage Clinton backers, many of whomremain bitter about the result of the exhausting 16-month primary fight, to fall inbehind the Illinois senator.

Political observers have little fear her disgruntled supporters will defect toRepublican John McCain, but the party needs to whip up enthusiasm among therank and file, to encourage grassroots Democrats to volunteer and donate money.

The rally, in the aptly named town of Unity, New Hampshire, comes afterseveral days in which both camps have made concerted efforts to unify the party'stop fundraisers. They want to bring Clinton's top donors and cheque bundlersonto the Obama team, and hope well-heeled donors who have contributed thelegal maximum to Obama will help Clinton pay down $10m in outstanding cam-paign debt.—Internet

6 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Saturday, 28 June, 2008

The 3rd July is a significant day forthe entire Myanmar women. Myanmarwomen have earned a good reputationglobally for their enjoying rights andfreedom most, being capable of playing aleading role, managing the householdconcerned, and keeping peace. Someforeign writers in their works stated thatMyanmar women were well capable ofpreserving religious faith, social norms, traditions and culture.

In successive periods, the nation sawpatriotic female political leaders, nunliterati, and royal family member literati.During the colonial period, manyMyanmar women showed their brilliantperformances at risk to their lives to helpthe nation regain independence. In thisage in which the world has been like aglobal community, Myanmar women areserving as entrepreneurs on whom thenation can place much reliance. They aregetting well with fellow partners of othercountries in accordance with the principleslaid down at the World Women’sConference.

The Myanmar National Committeefor Women’s Affairs, a national force ofthe motherland, was formed in 1996. In2003, the committee was reconstituted asthe Myanmar Women’s AffairsFederation, and the 3rd July was designatedas Myanmar Women’s Day. Since then, the day has been celebrated on a grandscale by holding conferences at whichrepresentatives from states and divisionshold discussions and submit reports.

It is common knowledge thatMyanmar women are making a goodheadway in the fight against narcotic drugsin cooperation with the countries thatshare borders with Mekong Region.Members of the MWAF madecontributions towards the tasks forprevention against trafficking in personsby giving educative talks and coordinatingwith the help of members of the MyanmarPolice Force. The drive for enhancing thelife security and development of Myanmarwomen rests on community peace. Withthis concept, members are making all-outefforts to help achieve the goal. Myanmarwomen do not need to stay abroad to earnmoney. On Myanmar Women’s Day, theMyanma Radio and Television boadcastscommemorative TV plays, discussions, songs and costume shows, and prizes foroutstanding performances are awarded towinners every year. Moreover, prizes arepresented to those who are outstanding inliterature, and winners in contests such asRed Cross ability contest, sports events, events for the disabled, photo contestsand article and short story contests, outstanding members of Fire Brigade, and Myanmar Police Force and blooddonors.

MWAF members have takenresponsibilities for protecting and guidingMyanmar women for preservation ofnationalistic spirit, patriotic spirit, traditions, culture and national character. The federation conducts many coursessuch as vocational training courses,

Myanmar Women’s Day thatwill make Myanmar history

Saw Mon NyinnBuddhist culture courses (basic),handicraft courses, typing courses, tailoring courses, and pre-primarycourses, and supervises tasks for maternaland child health, personal hygiene, anddisease control. In this regard, leaders ofrespective groups are also giving closesupervision.

It is fair to say that Myanmar womenhave achieved greater success in sport. They have won many medals in thefootball, volleyball, acrobat, Taekwando, track and field events, judo, swimming, wushu, weightlifting, sepak takrawcontests, international sports events, andOlympic games.

Now, the nation has seen womanengineers who play an important role innation-building tasks. I still rememeberleader engineer Daw Si Than and partyof Yeywa Hydropower Project. Thearticle contest “Let’s work together fordevelopment of women” made splendidprogress. Thanks to the encouragementthe government has given, MWAFmembers have come to preserve andsafeguard national prestige and integritymore than ever, and to be convinced thatthey are duty-bound. It is very hearteningto learn and witness that women aretaking part in various sectors in theinterests of the nation and the people.

Here, there is a notable point that it isrequired of Myanmar women to preservetheir kind-hearted nature, and to remainas those who have shame and fear tocommit unwholesome deeds. Someyoung women are unwilling to preserveown traditions and culture as they thinkhighly of western culture. They need toresist the domination of western culturethat is penetrating the nation at a highspeed. Some young women wear shortsand tight skirts rather than traditionalcostumes. They have been brazen enoughto wear gowns in public. They alsowrongly think that they can be proudonly when they wear mini skirts. So, Ihave to recite the poem I wrote toMyanmar women whenever opportune. The poem is designed to warn immodestwomen that they should not wear westerncostumes but value traditional ones.

Have Myanmar young womenmended their ways? While femaledancer liberty Ma Mya Yin waspresenting dances, one of the fans askedher to take off her stockings, making anoffer that he would award a gold coin ifshe accepted his offer, but in vain. MaMya Yin was in no mood at all toexpose her calves to the audience.Unlike in the past, today, there is noneed to make any offer to have a chanceto see calves of young women.Exposing calves is not discarding ownculture, but I wish they would not wearshort pants and skirts.

I feel as if Myanmar young womenpledge that they will never wear westerncostumes beginning from the 3rd ofJuly this year. I wish it would not be adream.

WASHINGTON, 27June— Faced with globalwarming, plants are head-ing for the hills. A study of171 forest species in West-ern Europe shows thatmost of them are shiftingtheir favored locations tohigher, cooler spots.

For the first time, research can show the “fin-gerprints of climatechange” in the distributionof plants by altitude, andnot only in sensitive eco-systems, said JonathanLenoir of AgroParisTechin Nancy, France.

His team found “a

Global warming chases plants uphillsignificant upward shift ofspecies optimum eleva-tion, the altitude wherespecies are the most likelyto be found over theirwhole elevation range.”

Indeed, comparingthe distribution of speciesbetween 1905 and 1985with their distribution be-tween 1986 and 2005showed a shift upward of95 feet per decade, re-searchers led by Lenoirreport in Friday’s editionof the journal Science.

The team studiedthe preferred location ofplants from sea level up to

more than 8,500 feet in sixregions in France.AgroParisTech is the agri-cultural branch of the ParisInstitute of Technology.

This shows that theeffects of climate changeare being felt in all areas, not just mountain summitsand polar regions, ex-plained co-author PabloMarquet of the PontificalCatholic University ofChile.

Unlike animals, ofcourse, plants can’t justpick up and move in searchof a better home.
