Brothers and Sisters: Buon Giorno del Ringraziamento Felice Autunno "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest apprecia-tion is not to utter words, but to live by them." ~ John Fitzgerald Kennedy Thanksgiving Day is a na-tional holiday celebrated in Canada, the United States, some of the Caribbean Islands,

and Liberia. It began as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Similarly named festival holi-days occur in Germany and Japan. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States, and around the same part of the year in other places. Although Thanksgiving has historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, it has long been celebrated as a secular holiday as well. The Romans also celebrated a harvest festival called Cerelia, which honored Ceres, the goddess of agricul-ture, grain, and fertility (and from which the word cereal comes). But Thanksgiving in Italy?? The distinctly American tradition, created by Pilgrims to commemorate a bountiful harvest in the New World, doesn't translate well in another land where the Plymouth Rock would be just another stone in two–thousand–year–old Roman archaeological ruins. Even the trans-literal phrase in Italian for Thanksgiving, La Festa del Ringraziamento, refers to a variety of religious holidays held throughout the year for patron saints. There is a street in Florence called Via delle Oche, where geese used to be sold with the intention of preparing the Florentine tables for the feast of All Saints’ Day (November 1). An Italian-American Thanksgiving dinner, a large meal center-ing on turkey as the main course, or secondo piatto might include; starting the meal with an antipasti platter of mixed nuts, finocchio (fennel), dried meats, assorted cheeses, roasted vegetables and olives, followed by a soup course; such as creamy porcini chestnut soup , then a pasta course such as ravioli con la zucca (pumpkin ravioli) or lasagna and torta di ricotta, followed by atacchinella alla melagrana (roast turkey basted with pomegranate sauce and served with a pomegranate-and-giblet gravy), sweet Italian turkey sausage and mozzarella stuffing, or a chestnut-sausage dressing (if you are Sicilian), side dishes of baked sweet potatoes with lime and ginger and roasted vegetables, all paired with a nice wine and ending the meal with Italian cakes, cookies, pastries and even torta di zucca (pumpkin pie). What matters most, though, during La Festa del Ringrazia-mento isn't what ingredients are used, or who won the football game, but the opportunity for families and communities to come together provide food for the needy and celebrate the season in a tradition that's timeless. Christmas is a major holiday in Italy… while customs may vary from city to city, Italians celebrate lots of great, unique Christmas traditions! Across Italy, Natale tends to be a family-centric holiday, a time to stay at home (and eat!) with loved ones. In Italy, Christmas officially kicks off with the Day of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, on December 8th. This is when decorations go up (both on the streets and inside Italian homes) and when some Christmas markets start. Some families have a Creppo (Yule Log) which is burned through the Christmas Season. Along with the fancy lights, wreaths and trees, Presepi (nativity scenes) are displayed in many churches and piazzas. Crafting these

ornate works of art by hand remains an artisanal tradition in many parts of the country. If you want to go to the source, head to Naples; the southern Italian city is world-famous for their hand-made presepi. It still has whole streets with one workshop after an-other devoted to the craft. Naples is also world famous for its cribs known as Presepe Napoletano (Neapolitan Cribs). While the cribs are displayed starting on December 8th, the figure of the infant Jesus is not placed in the crib until evening/night of December 24th. The eight days before Christmas, also known as the Novena, (a series of prayers and Church Services) these days are also filled with carolers singing traditional songs around the neighborhood, known in Italian as canzoni natalizie or canzoni di Natale. If you’re in Rome, southern Italy or Sicily, keep an eye out for the zampognari, or bagpipe players—they travel from the nearby mountains to play their merry folklore carols. To prepare and purify their bodies for Christmas Day, Italians avoid meat on la Vigilia (Christmas Eve). Although the idea is to eat lean, most indulge on multiple courses of fish… sometimes as many as seven, known as Esta dei Sette Pesci (The Feast of the Seven Fishes). Common types of fish eaten in the feast include; Baccala (salted Cod), Calamari (squid), Scungilli (conch), Sardines, and An-guilla (eel). Gifts are commonly exchanged on Christmas Day after lunch—sometimes with the belief that Jesus has delivered them – Babbo Natale (Santa Claus) might have left small gifts when the chil-dren went to sleep on Christmas Eve. But some smaller, northern Italian cities believe that the blind Saint Lucia brings gifts for children on December 13, so they open them that morning. Other families may wait until January 6. The Epiphany is when la befana—a kind of “good witch” who is believed to have followed the wise men, but got lost—drops off presents. La befana is a particular tradition in Rome and Bologna, where the main piazzas often host fun activities for children; in Venice, locals believe that la befana arrives every year by boat! The official end of the Christmas season, though, isn’t until January 6—the Day of the Epiphany, and the twelfth day of Christ-mas. On the eve of the Epiphany, families usually prepare a large dinner to mark the end of the holiday season; children are given candy or coal (usually made of black sugar), depending on if they were naughty or nice. After January 6, you’ll see Christmas markets close and decorations start to come down. My wish for you, Brothers and Sisters is for this Thanksgiving and for the whole Christmas Season, that your table be bountiful with not only the food you and your family prepare, but with gratitude, love and joy for the whole year through. See you ALL at the next General Meeting, Lodge function/event. Don't hesitate to reach out to me anytime, if you wish to talk, have a question or concern. Always, keep in your prayers our Brothers and Sisters who are sick; our deceased members; and ALL the Service men and women that protect and keep us safe each and every day here and abroad. As well as our police, fire and EMS who put their lives on the line each day to help us when we are in need.

God Bless, In Unity,

Daniel

“CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS” The O.S.I.A. charity “Gift of Sight” will still be collecting your un-needed cell phones to be donated directly to “CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS” Some phones can be directly used, most will be sold and recycled. All monies will be used to purchase phone cards, which will be given to overseas members of ALL Branches of our Military so they will be able to call home. A box will be available in the entry to our Lodge so that you may leave your unwanted cell phones at any time or see Bill or Carmel Lamont. Any questions? Call Bill or Carmel at 631-669-4543

Membership Dues: As you already know, the membership voted to approve the Dues and Retention Committees proposal for the needed dues increase for the coming year (2018). With this increase other adjustments were made to our dues paying procedures to be in line with the NYS OSIA By Laws regarding Dues.

All Past Presidents will be assessed $40 per year dues. This amount will cover the OSIA annual per capita tax. Membership dues will increase to $80 per year. Members over 62 years of age, with 5 years membership in the Lodge will now pay $50 per year dues.

NOTE: Effective with these changes, all members will be required to present their current Membership Card to the Sentinel when entering the Lodge for a General Meeting. The following OSIA General Law rules will be enforced:

ALL DUES must be PAID by December 31, 2017. Any member who has not paid dues by December 31, 2017, will be considered IN ARREARS. Any member who has not paid dues by April 1st, 2018, will be IN DEFAULT. This means,

- Being dropped from the membership. - Re-instatement will require the OSIA $10 initiation fee and full dues payment. - Loss of senior discount (over 62 with 5 years membership), if reinstated.

Please make the effort to pay your dues on time. Your continued support and commitment are important to our Lodge.
