    These Considerations

RECOGNITIONat last. There were times, usually during the weehours, when this seemed unlikely. But all that's now in the past. We've finally made it. We're there. It is with great pride (naturally expressed with all humility) thatwe now inform you that Considerations has been awarded a Raspberry by noless a body than AFAN, the Association for Astrological Networking. Thecommendation appears in the social set's April 1995 newsletter. Our efforts topromote Ross Harvey's innovative discovery of the Life Span Revolution sin-gled us out. The ultimate sentence in the citation: "Is that [the LSRev] reallysomething astrologers shouldbe promoting?"

Thank you AFAN. You are, however, completely inaccurate in stating thatthe LSRev enables one to "choose" one's time of death and quite wrong in yourinference that our promotion went to non-astrologers. As Considerations ig-nores psychic fairs and those who believe astrology involves forming a circleand holding hands, we're surprised you even noticed.

THIS PRESENT issue contains an analysis of the shocking OklahomaCityBombing, which is combinedwith various US, state and city charts;this byBasil Fearrington, a talented writer new to Considerations. Thereare several articles on rectification, one by our sage friend from Switzerland,Eric Weil, who uses degree symbols, solar returns and inbetweenity to identifythe correct birth date of the painter Georges Braque. Another, by FrankJakubowsky, detailing a very different methodology to find first the year andthen the day and time when Fidel Castro was born. Ifyou are not familiar withFrank's approach, prepare to be utterly astonished. And do try it yourself, hisresults have been startlingly accurate. Prier Wintle doesn't care for thebirthtime of Ronald Reagan that Nick Sutherland and Ross Harvey suggestedan issue or two ago, he explains why and uses some "old-fashioned" basic as-trology to propose an alternative - with which Ross in tum disagrees. Inmarked contrast to these rectification matters, we have Julie Mullette taking a(much needed?) philosophical look at how astrologers approach their subject, while Doug Saunders presents the results of his analysis of the charts of mur-derers and their victims - "t'was them planetary nodes that done it, mister!"Financial astrology, represented here with a case study by Bill Meridian, isa subjectworth in-depth study; any prediction is clearly right or wrong, there'sreally no in-between. Whether astrologically-based investing occurs simply "onpaper" or in actuality, there are none of tile maybes that plague prediction froman individual's horoscope. There are few better ways of identifying how planetscombine together than observing the transits of the slower bodies over the chartof the "first trade" of a company on the stock exchange. Teachers should con-sider using these as example charts in their classes, their students will thenquickly grasp how transits and progressions can manifest. We do have to becareful though, there is the ever-present danger that we could become too accu-rate in our work - is that really something astrologers should be doing?Enjoy!

For May 9th, the) is at 2937' 10,a position which involves both 29 and30 of the Sign.

For these two degrees Hitschler gives:29 i(): "A beautiful woman on a stool" or ''Near a pond in a solitary

landscape a statue of a woman lies in the grass like a handsome longbody."30 ~: "A fish's tail" or "A man plays the flute amidst an aviary of

which the birds are familiar .and all over brilliant bowls fall, like the onesthat come from fire rockets."

By contrast Andre Costessque gives for 0 ~: "a brutal end, some-thing that finishes before its final achievement, something that aborts."This does not seem to correspond to the life of our subject.

S URROUNDING PLANETS.I am applying here the theory of planetary surroundings (alsoknown as "in-betweens") so brilliantly advocated by the late Alex-andre Volguine.

As there is some doubt about the day of birth, the solar positionsshould to be studied first. For the May 9th birth, the 0is surrounded by ~and ~. For birth on May 13th, the 0is between ~ and e . The sense ofcreativity would appear better indicated by ~/~ than by 1)12.Let us now consider the planets on either side of the two MCs. Surpris-ingly both birth charts have the MC surrounded by the same planets, ) ! (and the J > . However, there is a distinct difference. In the May 9th chart, the J > is at the end of the XIth House; whereas for May 13th the J > is onthe cusp of the IVth House, in an angular position, and applying to trinethe Ascendant. During lectures I gave years ago inGermany and Austria,

    Fig. 4: Solar Return for 1963 (May 13 birth)10:56:05 a.m. GMT, May 14, 1963. 48N52, 2E20

I was able to clearly demonstrate that in the cases of famous people the )is almost always emphasized by being angular or by aspecting an angle. In certain cases this can be replaced by the ) surrounding one of the an-gles, i.e., being the next to cross or the last that did cross the angle. Now,the scale tips more in favor of the horoscope of May 13. Of course we willhave to find other indications confirming this choice.

Looking at the Ascendants: the May 9 Ascendant is surrounded by the) and 1). For a man who was such an innovator inpainting (cubism), it isdifficult to accept this combination of a iO ), which signifies the "old,"and 1) in the fixed Sign of ~ - even with 1) rf ~.

The horoscope of May 13 is totally different; here we find the Ascen-dant between the ) and > i < . The ) is in good aspect to ~, the planet of de-signing, and trines the Ascendant. As both the Ascendant and the Mid-heaven are surrounded by the same planets, this May 13 chart becomesmore important.

    Wei/: The True H orosco pe o f G eo rges Braque

WE KNOW that the painter reached the respectable age of 81years. This means that, in principle, he should have a ratherstrong horoscope. Let us take only the aspects of the 0and theJ > inthe two charts. We can ignore the O's conjunctions.

    Chart of May 9: 0 is 108 from the J > , quintile d' and if ~. The J > isclosely c ? d', 108 from T : l , G J , 108 from ~ and l:;. e .

Chart of May 13: )) * \t .Consequently, the second chart is much less afflicted as the first one.Ihen calculated the two Solar Returns for the year the artist died. The

Return of May 9 (figure 3) has the Ascendant in ~ in the VIIth birthHouse. The 0is in the VIIIth solar-return House, followed by ~. There isa ODd' aspect. This Solar Revolution is definitely afflicted.

What about the solar return chart of May 13 (figure 4)? This time theAscendant is in Q and falls in the VIIIth House of birth and is 0O. Theorb is very small. Near the Ascendant we find d' which in the birth chartwas in the VIIIth house. In addition, there is an opposition from T : l to theyearly Ascendant. In the May 9 solar return, the Ascendant also had anopposition, but it came from ~, and the aspect was wider.

MCONCLUSION from all of this was that Figure 2, the chart

cast for 9 p.m. (8:51 p.m. GMT) on May 13, 1882 was thecorrect horoscope for the painter Georges Braque.

After all this work, I thought it could be interesting to erect a Horarychart, to see if at the moment Iended my research, the sky would giveadditional information. Itwas July 15, 1990 in Crans-sur-Sierre (46N14,7E29) at 4:45 p.m. GMT. I was pleasantly surprised.

As in Figure 2, the chart of May 13, the Horary )) is in T in the IVthHouse, and the ASC is in J'.

After having finished this work, thanks to Mr. Maurice Charvet ofLyon, President of the CEDRA, and Mrs. Daisy van de Yin of Montpel-

lier, I received a copy of the originalbirth certificate which confirmed theabove deductions.

Approximately one year later, aFrench astrologer published a briefnotice saying that he had investigatedthe two birthdays and had discoveredthat two Georges Braque had beenborn at the same place four days apart, and that it was the painter who wasborn on May 13.

Rectifying Fidel Castro's ChartFRANK JAKUBOWSKYT I HERE ARE TWO birth dates listed invarious biographies forFidel Castro: August 13, 1926 or 1927. This should be an easyproblem for astrologers to decide, although getting the exact

time may be more difficult.Let's first try to decide which year he was born. This rectification

problem is also a good exercise for demonstrating the use of the LiteraryPattern Method. This method relates a person's writing to the planets inhis or her natal chart. There are three types: clockwise, counterclockwise, and number.

Let's consider the type which relates the writing to the planets in se-quence in a counterclockwise direction. For Castro's writings I am usingFidel and Religion, a book by Frei Betto. This is ideal because it is basedon an interview with Castro and contains spontaneous expression and littleediting to change the natural direction of his mind pattern.

    Alternative Sequencesof Planets on

    the two possible birthdays

As both dates have the same sequence of~, then 0, and then ~, I foundpassages that have a good identification to that pattern. It then becomes aquestion of which year's planetary sequence continues to fit its patternbest to the writing. The problem reduces to a simple question. Which of

tious health program and adequate planning of services and 4 - " F : ltechnical cadre training."

and profound and that, even though I'm not a theologian 4 - " F : lbut rather a politician - I also believe I'm a revolutionarypolitician who has always been frank about everything - Iwill try to answer all your questions with absolute hon-esty."

It will be good training in using thisLiterary Pattern Method to go through thatdecision process. Circle your choice, A orB, for each of the above ten sentences.

The next task is to look over your de-cisions and to eome to a consensus of onlyA or B. That will decide the year.

Inusing the Literary Pattern Method itis necessary to make judgments on several samples and not only one.

    Considerations X:3

Since we are trying to discover a consistent pattern, I try to find a sen-tence or paragraph that seems to have a good relationship to a planet, andthen to validate for a continuing relationship. If one is right and the se-quence of writing follows that within the birth chart then everything justfalls into place. If your decision for the test was A then that fits the pattern for 1926. Ifit was B, then it was for 1927. I concluded that it was B, and so I believeFidel Castro was born in 1927.

These test sentences came from four Castro quotes, on pages 49, 58,90 and 93. These replies by Castro to Frei Betto's questions fit the coun-terclockwise pattern of the planets for August 13, 1927. These few sen-tences should give readers a fair idea how the writing relates to the plan-ets. Generally it is one sentence per planet. The confusion of the year of birth is due to his parents changing thebirthdate on his records back a year so that he could attend school earlier. This was explained by Castro's older brother, Ramon, who was asked byLionel Martin. See the footnote in Martin's book The Early Fidel.

NwWE CAN proceed with a normal rectification. To use the

literary pattern method for rectification, we begin by narrowingthe time period and finding where in the sequence of planets theAscendant comes. If there is an extra paragraph or sentence in the coun-terclockwise pattern and if this extra paragraph or sentence is of a per-sonal character, we can say between which two planets the Ascendant lies.

On pages 172-177 of Betto's book Castro gives a long talk, which byparagraphs fits his counterclockwise planetary pattern. The first para-graph has a > t < character and the last a ~ one. There are 19 paragraphs. That means there is an extra one. This is the eighth, which I consider hasan Ascendant quality:"I myselfwas surprised to see just how much racial prejudice existed inourcountry. Right away, the first insidious campaigns began: that the Revolutionproposed that whites should marry blacks, that we were going to insist onmixed marriages. That kind of insidious campaign. I had to go on televisionmore than once to explain these problems, saying that this was a lie, that it wasinsidious, that we respected the freedom of each person in all decisions of thiskind - but that we wouldn't permit injustice or discrimination on the job, atschool, in industry or in recreational facilities. I had to argue and explain, be-cause all sorts of insidious slander campaigns began. Undoubtedly, the privi-

leged sectors began to feel affected by the revolution."That paragraph was between those associated with ~ and ~. On

    August 13, 1927, ~ is around 240 1 1 1 and ~ at 10 ;l'. I found three other

    Jakubowsky: Rectifying Fidel Castro's Chart

examples that confirmed the presence of an extra Ascendant paragraphbetween these same two planets, on pages 145, 145-148 and 202-207.

Further confirmation came when the pattern was identified by sen-tences. Many with an Ascendant quality appear in the first part of what isotherwise a "I ) sentence. These are some examples:"AsIaid, we're investing to improve quality.""I spend twelve years in boarding schools. I could go home only once everythree months.""But, as I've already explained.""I'd say that.""Iwas sent there.""April 24 was my saint's day, because there's a saint calledFidel.""That's why I'd say.""He bequeathed me his name in that I'd been called Fidel."

These also confirm the year as they all occur between the sentencesallocated to ~ and "I) . For 1926 the planet before "I ) in the counterclockwisesequence was the .

Even though we have plenty of examples of this type, it doesn't furthernarrow the time span. It does give us confidence that we are on the righttrack.

THERE IS MORE to the Literary Pattern Method that can reallynarrow the birth time down to a few minutes. There is a numbertype in which we can relate a person's writing to the planets whenthese are arranged according to the degree they occupy in their Signs. Ifwe then find an Ascendant quality between two planets, we can say thatthe degree of the Ascendant is between the degrees occupied by these twoplanets. This doesn't tell us the Sign involved, but we already know thatCastro's Ascendant is between 240 1 1 1 and 10 ;?

The number type is a fast moving pattern and so it may relate tophrases or sentences. I found a half dozen samples for the number typewhere the Ascendant was between Pluto and the Sun.

Here are some examples of the Ascendant from the number type:"Because, when Ihad a chance to inquire, Iwasn't as curious asIam now""I'll tell you in hectares""A millionaire was somebody who had a million times as much as a personwould earn in a day""1remember that my father supported him"

Let's take a number type example and actually see how it fits thewriting. This lengthy excerpt is from pages 108-109 of Fidel and Relig-ion. It is a transcript of a taped interview, so we have Fidel Castro in a12

conversational situation. The editors of the book had the problem of con-verting it into sentences and introducing punctuation. We don't need torelate the writing exactly sentence by planet, but I will follow it very muchas it was recorded and identify the appropriate planet following each rele-vant piece:

"I remember those election campaigns = ? I'm talking about when 1wasten =~. I knew a lot about politics by the time 1 was ten, because I'd seen somany things =q.

1 even remember that, when 1washome on vacation during one electionperiod - I'd been sent to the city tostudy when I was five - the safe thatwas kept in the room where I slept be-came a problem =,. You know thatchildren like to sleep late, but 1 couldn't,because there was a lot of coming andgoing very early in the morning -around 5:30 - during the election cam-paign =c/. The safe was constantly be-ing opened and closed, making an un-avoidable metallic noise =E. The wardheelers would arrive, and they had to begiven money =ASC. And let me tell you

that all this was done in the most altruistic spirit, because my father did it outof friendship =O. I don't remember a single instance - apart from the loans- when Don Fidel solved any of my father's problems or gave him funds forpolitical campaigns = ~. My father undertook those expenses on his own = ~.That's what politics was like, and that's what 1 learned as a child =).

There were a number of people who controlled a certain number of votes, specially in the remoter areas, because the people who lived closer in werecontrolled directly by the most trusted employees on the farm =? But wardheelers who controlled 80 to 100 votes would come from 30 to 40 kilometersaway =~.Afterwards, those votes had to appear in the corresponding electoralcollege, or the ward heeler lost his prestige, award or job =q. That's whatelection campaigns were like in the country =,.

The man who was supposed to become my godfather, the poor one, the Hai-tian consul, had some difficulties then. In1933, the Machado tyranny wasoverthrown by a revolution =E. 1 was seven in 1933 =ASC and, at the begin-ning, that revolution passed some laws of a nationalistic nature =O. At thattime, many people were unemployed and were starving, while, for example, many stores in Havana that were owned by Spaniards would employ onlySpaniards =~.There was a nationalist demand that a percentage of the jobs begiven to Cubans =~. Itmay have been a fair demand in principle, but in prac-tice, it gave rise to some cruel measures in certain circumstances, taking jobsaway from people who, though they were foreigners, were very poor and had noother way to earn a living =).

I can still remember with sorrow - with genuine sorrow - how, for ex-ample, in Santiago de Cuba and the rest of Oriente Province, they started toexpel the Haitian immigrants who'd lived in Cuba for many years = 1). ThoseHaitians had left their country years before, fleeing from starvation = ! i 1 . Theygrew and cut sugar cane, making great sacrifices, tremendous sacrifices = \j..Their wages were so low they were almost slaves =. I think - in fact, I'mabsolutely sure - that nineteenth century slaves had a higher standard of livingand better care than those Haitians = r : 1 ' .

The Ascendant's degree between those of E and the 0 puts the Ascen-dant between 16 and 19. That eliminates 1 1 1 and ;!' and leaves us with thechoice of ~ or m ?ITHE ASCENDANT is in ~ then the) must be located before 2627'. That is ~'s location. We need to re-examine the number type todecide if the) and ~ sentences can be reversed. How do you relate the sentences on the opposite page, to ~ or to the )?The sentences are given in pairs.

Again, it is necessary to decide either A or B for all of these questions. If you chose A, then Castro has a T I t Ascendant; if you chose B, he has ~rising. I have chosen A, so I believe he has a m Ascendant. By combiningthese different results, I can say that Fidel Castro was born on August 13,1927 and that his Ascendant is between 1621' and 1957' of Ill, or about12:07 p.m. at Mayari, Cuba.THAT IS AS far as the Literary Pattern Method can take us. Wemust now examine the resulting chart from a purely astrologicalviewpoint to see if it does in fact fit with what we know about hislife.

With the 0 at the Midheaven, this is a very powerful chart. There is astrong Grand Trine in Fire that involves four planets: r : J ' at 20 Q, 1) at 10;!', and \j. d > i< at 20 T. TIlls is the chart of a man of action, who is alsoblessed. With his) in ~ he is a revolutionary with a feeling for freedom, and his T I t Ascendant indicates his war-like nature and willingness to puthis life on the line. His ~ is * r : J ' , so his fighting spirit comes naturally.

His ) in ~ opposes ~ in Q . This gives him his communistic ideals offreedom for the common man, and also the idea of conflict between thosein authority and the masses. Any opposition aspect is also a complimen-tary one so there has been a partnership relationship with those in author-ity within the Communist movement. Cuba received a lot of help fromRussia.

His father died on October 21, 1956, coincident with 1)'s return to 10;!', which is another reason for a 1927 birth rather than one in 1926.

Suggested birthchart for Fidel Castro12:07 p.m. EST on Saturday, August 13, 1927

    Mayari, Cuba: 20N41, 75W42

In 1953 Castro launched what was called the July 26 Movement, which led to the overthrow of the Cuban government. On July 26 of thatyear he led an attack against the Moncada barracks. It was a disaster,Castro himself was taken prisoner and many of the movement were killed. The transit 0 is at 2 Q on July 26, cf his natal ~, an indication of the im-portant role his writings had in organizing the July 26 Movement. The Oklahoma Bombing:An Astrological Perspective

Basil T. FearringtonT I HE Associated Press reported that the bombing took place onApril 19, 1995 at 9:04 a.m. CDT in Oklahoma City, Okla-homa. A first glance at the horoscope (figure #1) drawn for thattime and location is not very startling. if is in close opposition

to the Midheaven; we know from the studies of Gauquelin that this posi-tion of d " , just before an angle, is quite strong. The transiting 0in nearexact square to ) t( can also be taken into consideration. There is always apotential of something unusual or surprising taking place somewhere inthe world when this aspect is prevailing. However, we absolutely cannotsuggest that this d' position and 00t( add up to the grievous event thattook place in Oklahoma City. The 0squares )t ( twice a year every yearand the Midheaven opposes d " every day. We certainly could not havesuggested, before the fact, that an event like the Oklahoma bombing couldtake place based on these measurements alone. Let's look further.

Uranian astrology has shown us the importance of the T point in ahoroscope. Whenever there is a point (light, planet, node, angle, or mid-point) in the horoscope that makes a hard aspect (0 ' , L, 0, [J, cI') to 0 T,

There are two easy ways to see if a point in the horoscope aspects0 T. Look to see if there is anything at 0 of the other Cardinal Signs orat 15 of the Fixed Signs (1 0 orb). The second way is to use a midpointSort. I prefer the 45 Sort. Anything located at 44, 0 or lOis aspecting0 T.In the horoscope drawn for the moment of the bombing, the midpoint

Any talk of the horoscope of the United States leads to one of thelongest running debates in astrology, exceeded only by the Placidus vs.Koch and Tropical vs. Sidereal arguments. I've talked with many astrolo-gers about the horoscope of the United States and Idon't know that I'veseen as much defensiveness on any other subject in astrology. It has been documented in many places that the signing of the Declara-tion of Independence, with the ceremonial ringing of the freedom bells, took place at 2: 19 p.m. LMT, July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.] have no idea at all what the commonly used 2:13 AM time (the IT Risingchart) refers to. I have not been able to get a straight, factual answer fromanyone that uses this chart. However, it seems to have validity. I use it asa horary chart that symbolizes that moment in history when this countrymade a conscious decision to become free of British domination. I do notpersonally believe that a decision to make efforts towards freedom is thecriteria to use for a horoscope of a country so I use another horoscopethat, to me, represents the first time that the States acted upon a centralgovernment apart from the British. This horoscope (figure #5) was recti-fied by astrologer David Solte in his book, Scorpionic America. It istimed for November 11, 1777 at 5:52:56 GMT in York, Pa.

The two charts are really quite similar. The horizon of one is just a de-gree of partile from the meridian of the other (an interesting point of recti-fication will be when transiting e reaches this point during the next cen-tury). Both have strength in ~ and IIand where there is a lInd House em-phasis in one, there is an VllIth House emphasis in the other. The 0 ofone chart is in exact opposition to if in the other. Personally speaking, I'vealways had a tough time identifying the 9 archetype (nurturing?) with thiscountry and if 1 had to choose between the two, the llL archetype seemsmore appropriate. However, 1 am honest to admit that I'm sure that thisway oflooking at the United States would be different if! lived in Rwandaor Bosnia.

The President of the United States, or any leader of a country, almostalways has a horoscope with close synastric ties to the horoscope of thecountry. Whenever 1 look at a prospective chart of the United States, oneof the things that I do is compare it with the horoscopes of United StatesPresidents. Interestingly, 1 found that there is not one man that has beenPresident of the United States who does not have a planet or angle inconjunction or opposition to the planets in llL of Solte's rectified chart. Here is just a small survey:

Bill ClintonGeorge BushRonald ReaganJimmy CarterGerald FordRichard NixonLyndon JohnsonJohn KennedyDwight EisenhowerHarry TrumanFranklin RooseveltAbraham LincolnGeorge Washington

(I must add, in light of this, that Bob Dole has J > at 19 TIL,\ at 9 Ill,and Midheaven at 25 ~). This is just a small sample but, trust me folks, the phenomenon is replete in the charts of every United States President.

Interestingly, there also seems to be some correlation with foreign warsand the t5-TILaxis as well. The war in Iraq started with if at 29 t5 and eat 20 TIL.The Vietnamese war began with "" at 24 t5. World War I be-gan with u at 10 t5 while World War Il began with ~ at 24 t5 and l i < at28 t5. It also seems that huge newsmakers, impact makers, have planetary activ-ity in this axis. Tim McVeigh's (one of the men arrested in connectionwith the bombing) ~ is at 4 C S ! Off the top of my head I can think of thefollowing newsmakers that have planetary activity within this axis: O.J.Simpson, Nicole Simpson, Elvis Presley, Charles Manson, Martin LutherKing, Muhammad Ali, Newt Gingrich, Madonna, Tanya Harding, andLee Harvey Oswald. This is a phenomenon that doesn't necessarily proveanything but what are the odds that every United States President wouldhave activity in this axis as opposed to the other five? Sunrise Charts

WHEN we don't know a person's birthtime, like many astrolo-gers, we use a chart for sunrise on the person's birthday. Wehave found that progressing these positions, including the dawnangles, explains and identifies most major events in a life. The same can-not be said for untimed charts represented by the planets and angles setfor noon.

Example: Nick Lesson (born February 25, 1967 in Watford, England:51N40, OW25), the trader who's activities in Singapore bankrupt Barings,England's oldest banking house.'

Books ConsideredThe Handbook of Celtic Astrology

by Hele na Pate rso nPublished by Llewellyn Publications, 1994. 274 pages. $15.

This book is a marriage between the solar zodiac and the thirteen divisionsof the Celtic lunar calendar. The bulk of the book is laid out in cook-bookformat presenting a mythological and character description for each tree, then delineating the planets, Ascendant and Midheaven in each decanate ofthe division. Ms. Paterson is coming from several disciplines including theQabalah, Theosophy and the tarot, as well as astrology. She uses the de-canates attributed to Firmicus Matemus, which I feel sit oddly with theCeltic tree divisions, but their use blends with the cook-book format andthey enable her to give descriptions within a narrow band of degrees foreach tree.

The descriptions start with Beth (the Birch Tree) which is the first let-ter of the Ogham alphabet and in the lunar calendar comes just after thewinter solstice, which Ms. Paterson suggests was the beginning of theCeltic year. My own research indicates that earlier Celts ended and begantheir year with the festival of Samhain in OctoberlNovember, but this isneither here or there because the point of departure in the Celtic calendarwould not have the same astrological inferences as the first point of Ariesin the Tropical zodiac.

Ms. Paterson suggests a planetary ruler for each tree but I feel this isnot appropriate for all of them, particularly the hypothetical planets Vul-can and Persephone. Even so, it is a delight to see that Earth has not beenleft out, as is often the case in the more usual astrology. The section entitled Introduction, dealing with Celtic mythology andastrology, is brief but comprehensive. Ms. Paterson provides ample dia-grams and charts, and explains how to erect a Celtic chart, but as shesupplies all the degrees with reference to the zodiacal signs, it is easy touse the larger cook-book section for quick reference and comparison withan ordinary chart without the need to erect a Celtic chart. Only one ex-ample is provided (John Major - the British Prime Minister). I wouldhave preferred at least three examples, plus much more detailed analyses.

Although complete planetary rulerships are dubious, the fixed stars areimportant in Celtic astrology and the author has not neglected them, butshe makes no mention of precession, so the degrees she gives for these andthe galactic center should be accepted with caution, and recalculated ifnecessary.

    Books Considered

At the back of the book is a good index, glossary and bibliography. These appendices in themselves show that Ms. Paterson is a careful andserious researcher, and as an introduction to Celtic astrology, her book isimportant and timely, but although I recommend the book for study anduse, I have some reservations about combining the solar zodiac with thelunar tree divisions. The two systems are fundamentally different andmore research is needed using the tree divisions on their own in order todiscover the verity of this ancient yet newly appreciated system, and amore appropriate combination than the decanates for exploration might bethe lunar mansions.

As it stands, the book could be used as a valuable resource into extradimensions, not only for natal work but also for progressions and transits. There is a wealth of interesting and different information here and HelenaPaterson's style is easy to read, while the cook-book format allows handyreference.

The contributors include many who are prominent in the world of as-trological research, they are: T. Patrick Davis, Geoffrey Dean, GrahamDouglas, Suitbert Ertel, Francoise Gauquelin, Charles Harvey, MavisKlein, Nick Kollestrom, Theodor Landscheidt, Jane Lee, Lee Lehman,Frank McGiUion, Raymond Merriman, Mike O'Neill, Glenn Perry,Douglas Pierce, Mark Pottenger, Peter Roberts, Lois Rodden, RonaldTiggle and Mark Urban-Lurain. Several of these contributors have writtentwo or more pieces. As is only be expected in a work of this nature, the level of the contri-butions is somewhat uneven and there is a certain amount of repitition, nonetheless this reviewer found most of the articles in this anthology wellworth reading. I was particularly impressed by Nick Kollerstrom' s pieceon "Investigating Aspects': by Theodor Landscheidt's article entitled"Frequency Analysis," and by Mark Urban-Lurain's two contributions"Introduction to Multivariate Analysis" and "Anecdotal vs. Statisticalresearch. Editor Mark Pottenger has done a fine job in obtaining these contribu-tions and arranging them in a sensible sequence. This he does in three sec-tions, which he names: 1. The Nature of Research; 2. Research Design,Data Collection and Analysis; 3. Special Topics and Future Studies. Thecontributions in each of these three sections are very much of the nature ofthe named classification.

My only criticism of this fine collection is that Iwould have beenhappier with fewer broad generalizations and more interested in step-by-step explanations of how in a specific situation the researcher obtainedand defined a pilot sample of data to be analyzed; how he determined thecontrol against which it was to be compared; and then exactly how step-by-step the analysis occured, with detailed explanation of the methodologyused and examples from the raw data; the criteria applied to determine thevalidity of any initial results; and finally the steps taken to validate thehypotheses and findings obtained in this initial evaluation. Inother words, less theory and more practical examples. It would have been valuable tohave had at least one how-to example, tracing a research project fromstart to finish. Kollerstrom's article does this to some extent, though evenhere there is insufficient description of the down-in-the-pits work. How-ever, if one ignores this so-important and time-consuming aspect of anyresearch project, one can cull selectively from the various articles in thisvolume a good description of just about every one of the needed steps. Butselective culling is necessary. We are informed that this is Volume 1, so atleast one future anthology of this nature is planned, and this omission maythen be rectified.

This is a book astrology has been needing for a long time. One cancarp at minor discrepencies and omissions, but ali-in-all Mark Pottenger, the contributors and ISAR have produced a very useful book, one thatshould be available to and referenced by anyone contemplating researchinto astrological phenomena. Congratulations to all concerned.

Planetary Stock Trading is a welcome and essential reference for anyoneinvolved in fmancial astrology, it contains the charts of 1,062 First Tradesfor 715 NYSE and 347 OTC stocks. We already have available CarolMull's invaluable books which give the incorporation data for companiesbut, as Meridian explains, while a company's incorporation chart reflectsthe fundamental operations of a company, transits and directions to it do

not necessarily show how Wall Street views the company and how thestock price can fluctuate. It is the First Trade chart that tends to correlatewith changes in a company's price in the market. The best combination isto have both charts available, a company's Incorporation and its FirstTrade, the financial astrologer is then able to evaluate both its basic busi-ness and how the stock market will anticipate its future profitability.

Besides the invaluable charts it contains, Meridian's book will be ofparticular value for its clear explanations of how to interpret a First Tradechart and identify winners, how to relate Incorporation and First Tradecharts, how to select which charts to work with, and for the series ofthirty-three Case Studies which clearly highlight how a company's FirstTrade chart should be used and how its progressions and transits correlatewith changes in the financial market. One example of these fascinatingand educational case studies, that of IBM, is reprinted in this issue ofConsiderations. Bill Meridian's Planetary Stock Trading is worth havingfor these excellent Case Studies alone.

This book's Appendix, which separately lists each planet by its longi-tude in each of these First Trade charts, sorted in zodiacal sequence, willbe very useful for anyone wanting to identify potential winners and loserson Wall Street. Knowing, for example, that the October 1995 solar eclipseoccurs at 0 T I L , it is a simple matter to identify each company by theplanets in its First Trade chart that are aspected by the eclipse. Falling onthe First Trade's ~. 'I f or > i < , the eclipse is likely to stimulate that com-pany's stock price; on " t : > or ~, it may depress it. Having identified a po-tential mover using the index, the would-be investor then turns to the mainpart of the book to examine the complete First Trade chart of the relevantcompany and decides whether or not it has basically beneficial aspects tohis or her own natal chart. When these are positive, the company is thenfurther investigated as a possible investment vehicle using technicalanalysis and an in-depth study of the transits and progressions to both theFirst Trade and Incorporation charts. The actual purchase of the identifiedstock should occur on a day when there are no major difficult aspects inthe sky and when both the investor's chart and the company's First Tradechart receive benefic transit aspects.

Investing one's own hard-earned savings on the Stock Exchange issomething few can afford to tackle lightly. There is always the potentialrisk of loss. Intelligent and patient use of the charts and insights providedin Bill Meridian's Planetary Stock Trading may just provide the positiveedge for which we have all been searching. Strongly recommended.

It is interesting to note that the company adopted its current name withthe 0 at 25 =:. Name changes are important and have much the sameeffect as incorporation horoscopes. Thus, the orbit of T : l through thesedegrees combined with the 0from E to deliver a double whammy.

The confirmation of this degree area as sensitive was confirmed by thedeath ofIDM's founder, Tom Watson, during the transit. Now that T : l hasleft =:, it appears that IDM has turned the comer and has an improvedoutlook. The shares rose 50 percent in the first half of 1994.

More recently, we had a good glimpse of the effect of 4 - . In 1994, 4 - ' Sr? to the IDM 10 C 5 ASC signaled upsurges in the share price. Mostnoticeable was the April 21 jump of $5. Note how 4 - now has a morebullish effect on the share price after the dissipation of the depressinginfluences and the reversal of the price trend. Whereas we would havesearched for bearish hits to the chart to initiate short positions, we nowalter our strategy to go with the new uptrend. We look for bullish hits likethese Jupiter transits to "go long" the stock.

yOPIC IS MURDER. Don't think that I chose this subjectbecause of some morbidity in my character, because that isnot so. Instead I chose the subject for other reasons.

First, my daughter has contributed to a magazine calledReal-Life Crimes from which I have a ready source of birthdates. The exact time of birth is not necessary for my purpose.

Second, dealing with murder is dealing with facts. Indisputable factswith respect to Astrology pleasure me because I feel the entry into eso-tericism and much pseudo-psychology, which has become so prevalentnowadays, presages a danger to Astrology. In previous ages it fell intodisrepute precisely because of the fanciful flights of imagination of itsexponents. Do not let anyone tell you that Astrology is not a science. It is!It is an empirical science with a firm statistical foundation, accumulatedover thousands of years of observation. Unlike religion, it should not dealin myth, miracle and mystery, but in the precise, observed data of plane-tary geometry. Nor is its driving force fear, but enlightenment. I am tooold to bother with the Bible-puncher or the fundamentalist, and will meetmilitancy with militancy. I hope you will do the same.

From the named magazine and some other sources, I collected tenbirthdates of murderers. I did not know what I would find but, because ofmy unshakable belief that the complete tenure of life is by design, I knew Iwould find something. And I did.

The overt reasons why people murder or kill themselves are many:greed, hate, frustration, jealousy, sexual deviance, religious and othermanias, etc. All these lie in the emotional spectrum, few in the intellectual. Some are physical, as when pain and suffering are the promoting factors. However, I do not believe in free will and my answer to the question"Why do people kill others?" is because they are programmed to do so.

In my opinion there is too much emphasis on the "potential" of thehoroscope. I think that is the wrong word. The horoscope is not a poten-tial. It is a firm, irrevocable contract between Whoever rules this mundaneliving and the subject of the chart. It is compulsion, despite the dictum"the stars impel, they do not compel." Over nearly forty years in thisgame, no one has shown me otherwise. This compulsion does not effectonly a person's physical nature; his mental, intellectual and spiritual na-ture are also enshrined in the birth chart.

Saunders: A Fatal Necessity in the Stars

The Ascendant with its attendant rising planets, synthesized with the 0and , tells the astrologer who you are and how you approach your life.Someone born with ::= rising reacts differently to all facets of life thandoes another with T I L rising. ~ and ) i ( and their aspects show the mentalreactions, ~ and ~ the emotional. The third and ninth houses show one'sability and manner of communication and other intellectual pursuits. Thefifth and eleventh, the love given and received. It is important to rememberthese basics, they help us understand the mental and emotional processesof the murderer.

EFER TO Table 1. This lists the starting positions of the planetsn the day of birth (00:00 hours) for the ten murderers, except forumbers 1,2, 7, 8 and 9 which are exact to the time of birth (birth

detailsare given at the end of this article) . The Table probably doesn'tmean much at first glance. The message it contains is that there is an areaof the heavens that seems to be particularly related to the murderous im-pulse. This area is from 19 to 24 0, and especially at 23 0 before1945 and 22 0 after.

Why should this area of the Zodiac be so malevolent, so charged withthe urge to destroy one's fellow man? There seems to be two main rea-sons.The first is that before 1945 1)'s Q was at 23 O. and after 1945 it waslocated at 22 O. Also, ~'s 0 was at 19 O. 1) is the Lord of Karma, and~ is his Lord High Executioner. This suggests that murder is a necessarycatharsis, a needed act of spiritual release from obligation for both themurderer and the murdered.

The second and/or confirming reason may be the fixed stars: Castor at19 0, Pollux at 22 0, and Procyon at 24 O. These stars are related toviolence and malevolence, including murdering and being murdered.

Inevery act there are two components, the one doing the action and theother receiving the action. This clearly applies to murder. Even if the onedoing the action is operating out of free-will, it is most improbable that theone receiving the action is doing so. No one in a right mind wants to bemurdered. As astrologers, we are aware of Karma, a doctrine that pro-poses the necessity to expunge from the Spirit the guilt of actions commit-

ted during a succession of pastlives, and which, on the face of it,appears to coincide with the ideaof the justice inherent in the fact ofbeing, a Divine Universal Justice, rather than a haphazard Chance. Ifthis is so, it raises more questionsthan it gives answers.

If our behavior is predetermined, is there guilt? Are we still makingmore Karma, and how can that be? Or, do we make Karma in a life that isnot lived on Earth? Is Earth merely a penal colony? I can't answer any ofthese questions, but when I see the exactitude of planetary geometry cor-responding to mundane activity, these are among the questions I ask my-self. My sense oflogic tells me that if I, in an act of murder, am respond-ing to Karma, then I cannot be guilty of a crime or, as some would have it,a Cardinal Sin.

Another possibility is that all our Karma was made over an Earth lifeor lives in a distant past, and are only now being paid off little by little ina succession of lives. Against this is the fact that some of the ten murder-ers were serial killers, one of them being credited (if that's the right word)with the murder of eighty young girls. And one thinks of Hitler whocaused some 20-million deaths, or Stalin who is said to have killed 50-million! It is di:fficult to accept a theory of individual Karmic connections.Perhaps people of that ilk are used as an instrument of Divine Justice.

Returning to Table 1. The dates are a completely random selection. While well aware that ten trees do not make a forest, Ibelieve this sampledoes contain a definite, indisputable indication of violence.

UNFORTUNATELY, one does not always have the charts of themurderer and the victim to check the relationship. But there is-there must be - a clear relationship. Refer to my article on JohnLennon and his killer Mark Chapman,' there are definite indications of aKarmic (as we understand it) relationship between these two.

In cases of murder we should look to the 's Q, which represents rela-tionships, to the as the Soul and ruler of,and to connections with theplanets that represent death and/or the end of life.

    7. The murderer's natal 0is on the fixed star Algenubi which, accord-ing to Robson, gives:" ...a bold, bombastic, cruel, heartless, brutish and destructivenature ...,,3When we consider that the rubrics of our science are based upon thou-

sands of years of observations, it becomes difficult to dismiss as coinci-dence these constant geometric correspondences with given events. Theabove should be sufficient to establish, not only a karmic connection be-tween these two people, the murderer and his victim, but also a fatal ne-cessity in the stars.

I don't suppose anyone will ever prove Reincarnation or Karma, butthis planetary correspondence, this synastry, goes a long way to support-ing the theory of the Soul's cyclical existence.

The late Manly P. Hall wrote a pamphlet, Astrological Essays, mwhich, inter alia, he discussed suicide, which is murder of the self:

"The doctrine of reincarnation is the only reasonable expla-nation for the mystery of existence. No person can escape the con-sequences of his own actions. By the law of reincarnation, manmust inevitably be born again to continue the cycle of existencefrom the point where he previously left off. If a man then forciblydestroys his life to escape the law of consequence, he will be reborninto an environment where these consequences will again confronthim. Only solution brings release. We can avoid nothing and wecan avoid nothing in the universe. We must face and master everycomplex condition that confronts us."This, of course, is meant to be a statement of Free Will, but to me it

means the opposite. What he is saying is that if you don't do what youmust do, you will have to come again and do it all over. So much for free-dom!

I believe in consistency and logic. How often do these same peoplewho believe in Free Will say "It is God's Will" or "Deo Volente" or some2 Ebertin, Reinhold. Philosophical Implicationsfor Astrology

JULIENNE MULLETTEMYSTICSmay be themost practical peoplein the world becausethey know what theyconsider to be ultimate truths, ul-timate belief systems, so that eve-ryday questions and issues can beeasily resolved by reference tothose ultimate visions. Well, per-haps not always so easily, as mostof life's most enormous decisionsevoke great agonizing in our souls, but the point is that there is a frameof reference to which the mysticcan refer life choices.

Ultimately, how we practiceastrology depends upon how weview the universe in which we live, and it is the job of the philosopherto help us ask the questions weneed to ask in order to understandour existence, and in order to un-derstand astrology's place in ourcosmos - or chaos!Historically, there have beenperiods when astrologers failed toask needed questions, and thesecaused tremendous setbacks in ourgrowth as a profession and as avaluable field of knowledge. Forinstance, in the periods before, during, and after the Renaissanceastrologers tended to be wedded towhat they knew of Ptolemy, andresistant to new astronomicalquestions. The Copernican Revo-lution left us behind as we chose

not to evolve, not to accept thechanging world-view the Coperni-can Revolution brought with it.And, as we fussed and fretted andheld fast to outdated views of theastronomical relationship betweenthe sun, the earth, and the otherplanets, the worldwide universitychairs, which had been chairs inastrology, were gradually takenover by astronomers, by peoplewho were interested in only a partof the cosmic scheme; in the meas-urements and studies of the physi-cal nature and relationships of theheavenly spheres, instead of in thegrand scale of the holistic connec-tions the astrologer/astronomersees. Not only did we lose becauseof our shortsightedness, but theacademic, intellectual, scientific, and humanistic communities alsolost the possible contribution as-trologers might have made to anunderstanding of life.

We need now to examine ourknowledge and our basic premises.Where do we stand at this time inhistory? Do we ask ourselves thegiant questions, or do we onceagain get caught up in what wethink we know? Do we dig ourheels in and glue ourselves to whatour first teacher taught us? Are wewilling to re-examine all of our pettheories, from the systems of exal-tations, to the way we divide the

Zodiac, to the aspects we use inour daily practice, to whether themyriads of asteroids really work,to the real value of one of our fa-vorites, composite charts?Do we, for instance, continuethe useless and outdated argumentsabout whether astrology is an artor a science? Or do we realize thatthis is simply not a relevant ques-tion, then even the scientific com-munity's understanding of the na-ture of science has changed?Medicine is a science, and thepractice of it is an art. Astrology isa science, and the practice of it isan art. No real scientist any longerbelieves in 'hard' science, or 'hardfacts.' We now realize that allknowledge, all discovery, is theory, and constantly shifting theory, shifting as we add information toour understanding, opening thelayers of reality like lovers explor-ing each other's many dimensions.Physicists are now theorizing thatvirtual reality is all there is. As theHindus have said for millennia, allis maya, all is illusion. There areno 'things'; all in existence is re-ducible to something smaller. itseems that ultimately all wehave islight waves, that we are, indeed, creatures of the light, 'Light Be-ings,' as is everything else in exis-tence. 'Things' seem to be simplyagglutinations of light manifesting

CosmologySOWHAT is our cosmology, our understanding of theuniverse as a whole and ofits form and nature? Do we believein fundamental chaos? Is all purechance? Is there predesigned, pre-programmed, or predeterminedchaos, or order?Or is there a created or fixedorder? Does astrology hold to aharmonic system rather than achaotic? And does a harmonicsystem suggest that there are rela-tionships and that they are signifi-cant? Inother words, if event 'A'takes place, does it cause, or is it insomeway related to, event 'B'?If we believe in a harmonic, orfixed, system, how fixed is it? Howtightly related are successions ofevents? Are they related in thatthey cause each other, or are theyonly coincident? Can chance stillplaya part in such a system? Canthere be 'accidents'? If an accidentis predictable, is it still an acci-dent? Might we have a universe ofchance, with a tendency towardhabit? For instance, does a seem-ingly randomact, such as a geneticmutation, then become part of a

subsequently fixed order of geneticinheritance? And how permanent isthat new order? Can we really predict anything,or is it all chance? Or, can we pre-dict some things, while others arestill open to chance? For instance, can we predict that it will rain, butnot whether Noah will drown in thedownpour, or build an ark? DidNoah have a real choice, or do webelieve choice is an illusion, andthat all we have to do is hunt downthe perfect system, and, once wehave done so, that we will then beable to predict everything? Is'chance' just random acts of fate,or is there a suggestion that we canact upon events to change or directthem?

    For instance, Dr.Landscheidt's Golden

    TheodorSections!seem to represent a fundamental

order. Is there such a fundamentalorder, and if so, does this orderalways hold true, or is it subject tosome oscillation, some variancefrom precision? If it always holdstrue, then we live in a fixed andclosed system, and the ramifica-tions of this being a fixed andclosed system are that we have noinput into the system - that all isout there, pre-set, pre-ordained,pre-ordered, and that we are butpuppets in the hand of fate.

Or perhaps there are levels andlayers of fixed order. Maybe somepatterns are fixed, some moreflexible, some more malleable. Now the problem becomes, which

systems are fixed and closed, which might be open? How can weknow which are open, whichclosed? We might refer to JohnDewey and his work The Quest forCertainty; can we know anythingfor certain, can we predict with anydegree of certainty?

I think this is a question of tre-mendous importance for astrolo-gers these days. Ifwe believe thatwe can know and control every-thing, then we are going to spend atremendous amount of time andenergy on the search for the magicsystems, the sorcerer's wand tounlock the secrets. If, indeed, theanswers are there, then time spentwill be worth the effort. But if theyare not, if our planetary systemsare guides rather than dictators, wewill have wasted much energy on afruitless search. Ifeverything canbe predicted, and we are merelyGeppetto's constructs, pawns in aworld of Chance, is there any pur-pose to life?

Is it possible to ever have all thecomponents of any system under-stood so that one is able to articu-late the entire system, and say,

individual could do about it any-way. Secondarily, we could con-sole ourselves by saying our act ofprediction to the client was a fore-ordained piece of the puzzle; partof the plan. That nicely absolves usof responsibility. We could use thesame argument to withhold infor-mation.

    Mullette: Philosophical Implications of Astrology

'Here, we now know what all therelationships are, what all the fac-tors are. We have understood andexplained everything. '? When onefinally knows the astrological cos-mos, the facts for all time, what isnow called the T. O. E., or Theoryof Everything, do we then have afixed, closed system that is goodfor all time, or, referencing CharlesSaunders Pierce's cosmology andassumptions which arise from itdo we conclude that we are insteadpart of a system which is eitherconstantly changing, or in a stageof development? Or, are we in anoscillating universe breathing inand out like the breath of Brahma? If breathing or oscillating, willthere be a final breath, an Endtime?

If we live in a closed systemwith a fixed order, there may be achance, nay, a probability, that onecould eventually predict with ahigh degree of probability, assum-ing there are signs of this orderwhich can be observed. But if welive in a universe of chance wemust be much more cautious ~boutour predictions; we must see ourpredictions as descriptive guide-lines at most. We might predictrain, but present options to ourclients, such as carrying an um-brella, staying indoors, plantingseeds in the garden, u.s.w.Let us come down to everyday

practice for a moment. If all sys-tems are closed and fixed, we canpredict as we see fit. There shouldalso be no moral compunctionsabout holding back bad news, be-cause there would be nothing an

EthicsI,HOWEVER, we see our~verse as one of at least par-tial chance; a system with atleast a degree of openness, then ourpredictions become fraught with avariety of issues, and we movefrom the cosmological branch ofphilosophy to the ethical. If thesystem is open, we have choices ,and responsibilities. If this is aharmonic universe where there arerelationships, i.e., relationships, either causal or connecting, be-tween events, then we also haverelationships with our clients.

Do we then have responsibilityfor the astrological information weshare with them? Assuming we'recompetent (and being aware thatmany, if not most, of the peopleclaiming to be astrologers are notastrologers, much less competentastrologers!), do we tell our clientsall we see, or do we hold back?Transiting e is conjuncting the cli-ent's natal) -the mother may die.Do we tell?
