The Foundation of Voluntary Teaching of China The Foundation of Voluntary Teaching of China, directly under the Central Youth Development Foundation, was officially established in March 2010. The symbol of the foundation signifies a scholar with heart, representing its mission in prospecting the whole nation through voluntary teaching and knowledge transfer from a group of highly educated scholars to thousands of secondary or elementary students from the minority, developing and disaster- stricken rural districts and remote provinces. The foundation is aimed at developing and nourishing this “next generation” with a systematic, disciplinary, effective, scientific and continuous voluntary teaching support service. Cecilia, Kevin and Conrad’s voluntary teaching trip to China On Aug 21 st to Sep 1 st 2011, Cecilia and Kevin will be bringing 6 students to Beijing, China to support a project organized by the Foundation of Voluntary Teaching of China. Conrad will be joining them to deliver eight days of teach- ing activities to an elementary school in the rural area, mainly consisting of students from the farming community whose parents migrated to the city in search for job opportunities. The teaching will focus on the 3 main areas of English, Mathematics and Music. Scott Meek was born in 1982 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where

he studied piano with Carole Pollard for ten years. Upon

graduation in 2005 from the Oberlin Conservatory studying

under Alvin Chow, Scott continued in his graduate studies at

Indiana University studying under Menahem Pressler, earning

Masters and Doctorate degrees. Scott’s accomplishments

include first prizes from Indianapolis Matinee Musicale

Competition (2009) and the Inaugural Knigge National Music

Competition in Vancouver (2008), second prize at the 30th

Conrad Ng, a grade 11 student who has been learning violin with

Cecilia Xu for six years, is ready for his RCM ARCT Performer

examination this summer. Conrad has won numerous violin com-

petitions including the Kiwanis Music Festival, and recently in the

BC Conservatory of Music Festival 2011, he received 2 Gold

Awards. Conrad plays as a 1st violin in the VanString Chamber

Music. Starting this September, Conrad will join the Vancouver

Academy Symphony Orchestra with a full scholarship. Conrad has

also served as an Assistant Concert Master in the Vancouver

Youth Symphony Orchestra.

In the past 4 years, Conrad has been a soloist at recitals of Cecilia & Kevin Music Studio,

and has also served as a host and art director. Conrad’s passion in music has extended

beyond his violin into other musical instruments like the alto saxophone, flute, piccolo

and piano. At school, he has been a devoted flute and piccolo player in the Honours

Wind Ensemble and the Senior Concert Band. He is also an alto saxophone player in the

Senior Jazz Band. At the National Musicfest Canada 2011, all 3 ensembles mentioned

received the National Gold Awards. In the 2011 Kiwanis Jazz Music Festival, Conrad

received the Victoria Conservatory of Music Scholarship as a reeds soloist.

Academically, Conrad ranked 1st in Canada in the University of Waterloo 2011 Avogadro

Chemistry Contest with a perfect score. Conrad has also received scholarships and con-

secutively, for 4 years, Honours with Distinction and Educational Excellence Medals.

Athletically, he has been a key member of the school Badminton and Ultimate (Frisbee)

teams, winning Regional and Provincial Championships. Conrad has been selected into

the BC Provincial Ultimate Junior Team (Misfit) for the 2nd consecutive year and will be

competing in the Canadian National Ultimate Championship this mid-August in Ottawa.

E-gre’ Competition (2007), and third prizes at the Corpus Christi International

Competition (2006) and World Piano Competition in Cincinnati (2005). Scott has

performed as a soloist with the Edmonton, Toronto, and Winnipeg Symphony

Orchestras and has played solo recitals for the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg

and the UBC Wednesday Noon Hour recital series. Scott’s hobbies include origami,

cooking, and an enthusiasm for foreign films.
