    State Document No. 95-01/05/06/04

The development of the School Profiles is a joint effort between the Department of Education and the schools. All of the data and text were provided by the schools and

districts and compiled and published by the Department of Education in a standard format to allow for school comparison.

The Henry C. Conrad Middle School is committed toproviding exemplary instruction in reading, writing andmathematics through the use of technology and curriculum

integration. Student development is enhanced byparticipation in a wide variety of exploratory classes andextra-curricular activities. Academic and multi-disciplinaryteams provide a community in which the students are

instructed by a common core of teachers. Common teamplanning time provides teachers with the opportunity tocreate integrated thematic study units. Block scheduling

facilitates longer instructional periods with time to presentconcepts, model skills, and allow for both guided andindependent study. The spirit of cooperation among ouroutstanding faculty extends to the students, resulting in a

more enthusiastic attitude toward learning and significantimprovement in the academic achievement of our children.

Progress Toward Implementing State Content Standards:

    Parent Involvement:

The school/parent relationship has been positive with continuous collaboration for all students through meetings, conferences and

school programs. The Friends of Conrad (formerly PTA) along with the DE Parent School advocate, encourage parental

involvement through volunteer services for all academic and social programs such as school dances, family fun night, awards

assemblies, field trips and the National Junior Honor Society recognition program. Communication with the parents is enhanced

through newsletters published every month by the school level Parent Involvement Committee. These publications are an excellent

source of information for members of the school community concerning current and future school events. The school collaborates

with other agencies such as the Delaware Parent School and Children & Families First to bring workshops and training to parents

    of our students.

Conrad Middle School's teaching staff has implemented the State Content Standards in core academic and exploratory courses. Our

instructional focus has as its foundation the State and District curriculums. All teachers are required to teach all students the

content standards based on each student's readiness level.

Conrad has extended it's regular school day for the purpose of "banking time". The "banked" time allows teachers to participate in professionaldevelopment activities for one half-day per month over and above the district's professional development days. Training received correlates withthe needs identified on the school's instructional profile and with the School Improvement Plan. Topics presented have given teachers more in-

depth training on Differentiated Instruction, Higher Order Questioning techniques and technology integration.

    Uniform Code of Dress

Students at Conrad Middle School are required to wear a school uniform daily. The

parents and staff at Conrad Middle School believe a school uniform has a positive effecton school climate. Since the inception of the uniform requirement, there has been a

reduction in peer pressure, enhanced security, the development of a sense of communityand increased pride and self-esteem.

Conrad Middle School's intramural sports program offers a variety of sports to all students. The flag football season is played in the fall withbasketball following in the winter, and floor hockey in the spring. All players take pride in being a member of these teams as they compete against

fellow classmates throughout the season. We also offer the interscholastic sports of soccer, girls volleyball, boys and girls basketball, and track.Members of the teams compete with other middle schools within the district. The Conrad student athletes were very successful winning top honorsin wrestling.

Banking Time Program For Professional Development

    CASA (Conrad After School Achievers)

Five days a week over 80 students were involved with Conrad teachers working to improve their achievement in mathematics and language arts. Many students attended more than one session a week depending on their individual needs. Most of the students showed a definite improvement intheir grades along with improved attendance, classroom behavior and self esteem. This program is funded with grant monies which provided

students with a meal during the program hours and a counseling component.

    LAPTOP EXPERIENCE

Over 250 6th, 7th & 8th graders are receiving their core academic instruction using wireless laptops. The use of technology provides students with aunique opportunity to learn different technological skills as they master the essential skills in reading, mathematics, science and social studies.

Additionally, our laptop program addresses the issue of the digital divide by providing technological opportunities for students who wouldn'tnecessarily be exposed to them due to economic reasons. Moreover, students learn skills today that are essential for successful employment in thefuture.

    Exemplary Programs

Our programs enrich the lives of our students beyond the traditional classroom setting. Our four computer labs are enjoyed by students on a dailybasics. The HOSTS lab provides the opportunity for numerous students, each period of the day, to receive intense supplementary help to improve

skills. Our Business Education programs provide students with keyboarding opportunities, word processing capability, and internet instruction tosupplement research in the library, while our Technology Education program enables students to solve problems using technology. Through a largegrant and additional monies from the district we established an after school program to assist students in mathematics and language arts.

    EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM

Conrad students have an opportunity to individually improve math skills through theBefore School Math Program. This program operates three days per week and is open toall students for enrichment. Our Saturday School provides students with enrichmentactivities in math and language arts.
