There are more than 5 billion internet users in the world. People who are constantly on their smartphones and

tablets trying to access information from the web. People have started to rely on these sites for buying products and services. If you are a smart entrepreneur, you should develop a strong digital marketing strategy

What is digital marketing?Digital marketing is the promotion of products or services with the help of the internet, digital devices and other technology to attract new clients to your business. Why does your business need it? If you are an entrepreneur just starting, here are our top five benefits of digital marketing.

Basics of online marketing for new entrepreneursBy GIDEON GITUMA

Digital Marketing 101

BUSINESS CORNER

It is cost-effective: Most small businesses do not have the capital to spend on other forms of marketing like magazine ads, billboards or printing flyers. Boosting a post on social media or paying google to appear on the first page of a search engine is more affordable.Mobile access: Everyone who has a smartphone will use it for news, social networking, and a variety of other purposes. Different channels, including social media ads, emails, text marketing, can be used to promote your business as they browse on their phones.Flexibility: Understanding how to promote yourself creatively online opens up a world of possibilities for future publicity strategies. Should you post memes or send an email newsletter to your client base? With digital marketing, you can test and stop campaigns or projects performing poorly if they no longer align with your brand or they don't work. It allows Tracking: What time is your customer base online? What ads or content do they prefer? which age group prefers your content? Digital marketing will enable you to track your clients' behaviours in addition to engaging with them. This shows you which marketing methods to use and allows you to fine-tune and improve your strategy.Real time Interaction With Targeted Audiences: Digital marketing affords you instantaneous feedback about your product from your customers. This helps you develop a better relationship with your current as well as potential clients.

Why Smart Gyms? What makes us smart is that we use technology to offer a great product to our members and good value. We are paperless and cashless with a convenient biometric registration system that helps track members' check-ins and checkouts. This ensures no unauthorised person can come in. It also streamlines the daily operations, easing the employees' workload. What we offerWith Smart Gyms, what we offer is affordable gyms because we believe in fitness for everyone. There was a tendency in Kenya where gyms were for a specific clientele. We want to change that misconception by bringing in affordable gym services open to everyone. My dream is to be the Java of fitness. Why Java? Because Java is affordable and everywhere. How the business has changed since we set up shop in 2017We started with eight employees; two front desks, three trainers, two cleaners, a manager (me) and the founder. We currently have 78 employees with four branches in the Junction Mall on Ngong Road, Diamond plaza in Parklands, South Field Mall in Embakasi and The Hub in Karen.Smart Gyms has grown from word of mouth and social media Instagram has helped the business a lot. We put our classes on Instagram stories and send out information, especially of new locations on the platform. Clients have also been tagging us on posts that drive traffic to our pages. I also do promote some classes online, like when we started the digital classes.

"My dream is to be the Java of fitness." Vinita Otieno, co-founder and General manager at Smart Gyms, speaks to ePreneur about running a business, hiring great staff and the challenges that come with scaling a fitness business.

When I am hiring, the most crucial things I look out for are personality and relatability. I like people who can adapt and learn fast. As for the experience, it depends on the docket; someone like a trainer needs to have experience. I have learnt that with the gym business, people train because they are stressed. They want to learn a new outlet or transform themselves because they are not happy with them. This means they will walk in with a lot of luggage, and it is up to the trainer to meet the client where they are emotionally. To adjust their training to how the client is feeling. Customer service is, therefore, key.Running a business has made me learn to look at costs From uniforms to equipment, you have to look at where you can get affordable things. It has taught me the first quotation is not the last.I have also learnt to have a voice as a woman. So many stereotypes come with being a woman that I have had to take in stride. For example, my husband was the MD of Smart Gyms, and every time we went for meetings, people would direct all fitness questions to him despite me being the fitness expert. I have had to learn to say no and stand my ground on many things, including how I dress for meetings.Running a gym is a challenge I love to take on. The first branch came with its challenges. We started building from scratch, from concept, dealing with contractors, to hiring new staff. To top this off, I was raising three kids, two dogs, three cats, and was a wife. It was a lot, but we managed.By the time we got to the second gym in Diamond Plaza, the challenges were different. I quickly learnt that you can never replicate a growth strategy, especially if you deal with

other locations and culturally diverse people. Every site has its unique selling point. In terms of personnel, we have had staff poached by competitors or giving up and leaving in the middle because they can't see the vision. For self-improvement on managerial style, I read a lot on how to manage people. I have a background in psychology, which also helps. When dealing with staff, I have an open-door policy, have zero tolerance to nonsense, and have some degree of empathy, things I feel all managers possess. When we started, I used to be extremely busy that sometimes it came off as dismissive when dealing with employee concerns. I just didn't know how to balance back then, but I am glad to have learnt on the job. I want anyone who walks into our gyms to feel like they own it. I want to give you an experience.

BUSINESS TIPS

We have all heard about why it is essential to switch your business online; googled the advantages and

disadvantages of going digital. But have you been told the key areas to focus on when moving your business online?

Over the last decade, the internet has become a one-stop platform for purchasing anything we desire, from food to cars. The average shopper has shifted from shopping in boutique stores to online shopping.

According to Statista, a German company specialising in market and consumer data, as of January 2021, 59% of the world had access to the internet.

The majority of these people have, in the recent past, found it more accessible and convenient to shop online. This means your business model has to change from the traditional brick and mortar model to a hybrid or purely online model.

If you want to move online, here are five

Preneur Vol.2 14

Moving your business Online5 Key Areas to Focus on when shifting your business online.

Preneur Vol.2 15

BUSINESS TIPS

things you should focus onAssemble a team of talented individuals People are the most crucial element when it comes to succeeding in shifting your business online. A skilled team will help you better adapt innovative technologies, define your digital processes and facilitate beneficial digital changes within your organisation. Your dream team should have a blend of hard and soft skilled individuals. They should be adaptable, team players, and excellent communicators.

Always remember that most people who are focused on the technology and data processing side rarely think of humanising the product for the client. You can balance this by ensuring you also have people with exceptional people skills in your digital team.Leverage on TechnologyDifferent technological advancements happen every day, from AI (artificial intelligence) to web conferencing or digital money and blockchain. Knowing which tech your company should invest in is vital to your business. It helps you get out of Technical debt ( cost of rework that occurs after choosing an easy solution because it was cheaper and took a shorter time).

Determining which tech to invest in is the job of your IT department. They should direct you to tech that addresses your business' specific needs. This ensures you get good value for your money. Understand your DataWe all know in this digital age, data is king. Most business decisions and success comes from analysing the data-rich online environment. It allows you to track your consumers' behaviour on social media easily.

This helps you effectively decide what content should go on which page, how to purchase the right set of keywords for search

marketing campaigns, how to connect with your audience, improve the customer experience, and decide which resources to invest in to increase revenue.

Most data-driven companies treat their data as a corporate asset that gives them a competitive advantage. But having data without insight is not beneficial. Data should tell you what business success should look like, your biggest threat and if it is harming you. Remember to work with useful data and shed any data that your company will never use. Improve your processes How are you meeting your customer's needs? Are your online activities seamless? Are there blind spots you need to address? Do you need to automate some processes? Do you have open communication channels between you and your team to allow for information to flow both ways? Does your team work well and seamlessly together?

Your processes should be customer-centric and dynamic. It would be best to quickly move away from strategies that don't work while continuously improving those that do. Build Your company's ability to adapt to changeOrganisations that excel at embracing change always have a competitive advantage over ones that don't. They are not afraid to innovate, merge, downsize, rebrand, grow, restructure, acquire, and implement new products, services, and technologies.

Leadership plays a critical role when adapting to change. Always brainstorm with your team about where you want your organisation to go. This motivates them and gives you a clear roadmap for the steps you need to take going forward. It also helps with evaluating your progress.

BUSINESS TIPS

At the onset of social media, marketers learned that they could quickly build an audience of highly engaged fans

who would see nearly everything they posted without the company spending a cent. Then organic reach, which is how well your posts perform without boosting with money, started to decline. Companies that used to get 20% engagement on their posts could only reach 1% of their fan base. They had to rely on paid ads to reach their audience.

What does that mean for your business? As more and more companies started to leverage social media to build their brands, the social media space became overcrowded. Essentially there were just too many Pages producing too much content for too many fans. This means that your brand is always competing for visibility on the Newsfeed.

As an entrepreneur, using social media to create brand awareness and make sales is a viable marketing strategy. It helps you build and nurture authentic relationships with your

Without organic reach on social media, it is becoming more and more expensive to reach your audience.

BUSINESS TIPS

audience. And since you need this visibility to drive sales, you may have to pay your way to the top of your customer's mind. Why your company should start paying for AdsYou can’t rely on only organic reach when you clearly can see it is not working. Sticking to growing organically as a business means you get less exposure which translates to declining revenues.

Paid Social Media Is Pretty Great ɂ Paid social media is the modern marketing

tactic that allows you to reach the exact target demographic most likely to buy your product.

ɂ They can boost your engagement. One share with the right group of people can make you go viral.

ɂ You have the option of excluding specific audiences that aren’t as likely to become a buyer of a product or service. This makes social media incredibly effective at achieving real money-making goals.

ɂ Your ad will be seen. It will show up on your targeted audience's timeline. This is way better than relying on organic reach and hoping your audience sees it.

ɂ You can personalise what you want to share, depending on your demographic. This ensures your creative message fits with that demographic.

As you pay for your ad, you start to be intentional with the kind of content you put out there. This means your audience will see fewer effective ads of what they want and need and are more likely to click and buy what you are selling. Move from an engagement-based approach to a campaign-based one Engagement is the buzzword used to measure brand loyalty. But does alike

translate to a sale for you? Probably not. So how do you use social media to make sales? Make persuasive content that influences your audience in a way that helps move your business. Running giveaways or coming up with a clear campaign hashtag can boost brand awareness and make a real impact on your audience. And impact equals growth which equals positive Return on Investment. Will Paid reach Become More Expensive for Reaching Your Audience?Yes, this is because the only way to combat demand exceeding supply is to increase prices. So your social platforms will become expensive as more and more entrepreneurs start to pay for ads.

I co-own Big Fish, a fish restaurant on Thika Road, with my two sisters. I got into the fish Mongering business in 2018 after being

unemployed for a while. My older sister was already in the industry, and after suggesting we add sitting, we decided to come together and rent a small restaurant with two tables and ten chairs.

On 21st December of 2019, I tweeted a picture of my fish, which went viral. I was a small fish on Twitter with about 300 followers and had no idea that would happen. People started inquiring about where to buy the fish and whether we do deliveries. So many people showed their

support, and business skyrocketed from that single tweet.

From there, influential people visited our restaurant and shared photos online. This created a buzz on Twitter, and everyone wanted to jump on the Big Fish train. It was the talk of the town. And by June 2020, while business was shutting down due to the pandemic, we had opened a new 48 seater space. One surprising thing is that

From Small Fish to

most people like posting fancy meals on the internet, so seeing this much buzz around fish and ugali was amazing.

We are working on another branch on Church Road in Westlands with a seating capacity of 200 people. It’s a good location because of all the offices around. Also, many of our orders come from that area.

Our major difficulties come in the form of service delivery. Catering to a massive crowd at a go is something we struggle with but so far, so good. Communication has been key in situations where we face delays. Thank God our customers have been patient. Though we don’t have a background in hospitality, we are learning on the job.

Of course, we have faced criticism. It is part of every business. Sometimes the fish won’t match up to some people’s expectations. It’s not possible to please everyone. Despite this, we focus on the positives, and that

keeps us going. When it comes to growing the business,

social media has helped, but word of mouth has been vital. People who eat at Big Fish refer us to friends who refer them to other friends.

My advice to people starting out is to never underestimate the power of referrals. If you want to grow on social media, focus on one thing at a time. If you sell fish, talk about fish, not politics or fashion or football. Be consistent with your content. Ensure that you consistently serve tasty meals because that’s what will bring customers back. People care more about the food than the ambience. That is why Vibandas (food kiosks) are always full.

Going forward, I feel like the government should help the youth in business by waiving taxes and license fees because these end up costing more than the capital to start the business. In addition, there should be more incentives to encourage young people to start businesses.

My vision for Big Fish is to get ten random people on the street, and at least one of them should have eaten at Big Fish before. I want more people to experience our food.

TENDER TIPS

Contract Bid Bonds are a form of security offered by a bank or a financial institution assuring the

company awarding the tender that as a supplier, you will fulfil the contract if you win the tender.

If the winning bidder won’t fulfil the requirements and deliver the goods or services promised, the organisation awarding tenders will be compensated for the failed bid by the financial institution.

For many tenders in Kenya, you will be required to attach a bid bond to your tendering documents.

Some of the information you will need to fill out include:

ɂ Your company registration number ɂ Your Company KRA Pin ɂ The list of company directors and their

passports/I.Ds ɂ Postal address, phone number and Email ɂ Name of the Company taking the bids ɂ Bid amount ɂ Date of commencement of the cover

Bid bonds are important because:It binds the bidders to their WordWhen you apply for a tender and attach a bid bond, you are assuring the procuring organisation that if your bid wins, you will be able to provide the goods or services agreed. It shows your commitment to the projectBid bonds assure the organisation that you are genuinely interested and committed to fulfilling your bid. Some tender applications cannot go through without a bid bond. In such a situation, having this document gives you a better chance of winning the tender. You are eligible to a a performance bond if you winWhen you win the tender, the bid bond contract will allow you to get a performance bond. This is a surety your financial institution gives to show that if you cannot carry out the project, the bank or insurance company will compensate the organisation on your behalf.

record and shine a positive light on small businesses.

Rule 1: Ensure your business is registered, either as a sole proprietorship, partnership, limited company or cooperative. Rule 2: Obtain a PIN and tax compliance certificate for the business from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). Rule 3: It is crucial to obtain the necessary certifications from professional bodies and authorities. For instance, if you’re physically disabled, you may need to receive certification from the National Council for Persons with Disability.Rule 4: Always go through the bid documents carefully. Rule 5: Ensure your documents are complete. Rule 6: A proper cost analysis needs to be done when calculating your bid prices. A bid calculated either too high or low will be considered unresponsive. Rule 7: Be sure to inquire about the bid and get all the relevant information before completing the tender document. Rule 8: If you were unsuccessful in the bidding process, ask why you failed. With that information, you will learn from the mistakes made. Rule 9: Meet all requirements within the specified time. In the event your bid is successful, honour it. Rule 10: Do not provide any false information or misinterpretations in your bid documentationRule 11: Ensure you deliver quality services and products, as this will improve your track

TENDERPRENEUR

I got into tendering in 2009, working on supplying stationery items like pens. I didn’t particularly enjoy these tenders,

plus the return margins weren’t as big. Around the same time, a friend who was a CDF treasurer had won a tender, but he didn’t have the financial muscle to take on the project. So I came in as his partner, and we did such an excellent job that KeRRA’s(Kenya Rural Roadss Authority) resident engineer in Nairobi was impressed.

This success encouraged me to start my tender journey in roads and construction, and I never looked back.

Tendering is quite an interesting business. I remember once winning a tender, and I headed to the site with the engineers. When I identified myself as the owner of the company, no one believed me. Why? Because I was a slender young man. The misconception is that you must be old with a potbelly to win tenders. I had to show them my signature on the contract for them to believe me. I believe anyone can and should win a tender regardless of their age, height and weight.

The biggest mistake I have made was trusting everyone has my back. When I started, some of my referrals lied about not knowing me or the projects I’ve done - of course, walitaka niwachotee (bribe them). What they did cost me a tender.

Another mistake is biting off more than you can chew. The tender figures may look enticing, but it’s very challenging when it comes to the real thing. Learn to start small by bidding for small tenders before taking on a big project.

One principle I always live by is making a difference in people’s lives through employment. Currently, I have two companies with 40 employees on a project basis.

One resource I would say has significantly advanced me is the Performance-Based Contract Training offered by the government. I did the course in 2017. It taught me how to manage projects.

For youths who want to get into tenders, the time is now. The 30% allocation by the government for disadvantaged groups is so much, plus the 70% of the rest of the tenders is still open to us. There’s enough for everyone to eat, and there is always a seat at the table.

NEWS

Kenya’s 2021/2022 budget was announced by the National Treasury and Planning CS Ukur

Yattani on the 10th of June 2021. After the Covid-19 economic crisis, various industry sectors were hoping for the government coffers to look in their direction- and indeed, there were clear winners and losers.

One of the winners was Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The government allocated about 1.7 billion Kes to ease the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This move will potentially revitalize these businesses that were extremely hard hit in the past year.

KENYA’S 2021/2022 BUDGET RELEASED, Good News For SMEs

Though the government had already taken some measures to cushion SMEs through tax turnover cuts and suspension of CRB listing, the pandemic still wreaked havoc, and more than 75% of SMEs came to a grinding halt.

Smaller businesses, which are consistently vulnerable to cash crunch because they don’t have the cash flow to sustain operations, especially if overall sales are low, struggled under the weight of the pandemic, especially with the lockdowns and restrictions.

If this financial directive is implemented, SME owners will have something to smile about in the coming year. Other winners include education and the Big 4 Agenda featuring healthcare, housing, food and manufacturing.

Reviving these businesses will mean more money being injected into the economy.
