Formed in 2003, Connexion2 specialise in lone worker security.

Passionate about raising the profile of safe lone working,

Connexion2 is focused on improving the safety and

productivity of lone workers through understanding the

needs of an employee, employer and other stakeholders

such as the Police.

The company develops leading lone worker products and

provides fit for purpose solutions incorporating proven

technology, training, consultancy and support, allowing

partners and customers to provide security and peace of

mind for their clients and mobile workforce’s respectively.

Lone Worker Security as a topic is wide ranging, from

device-based solutions to the training of staff across an

organisation. The Connexion2 product range is designed to

consider both the wider macro-issues facing organisations,

as well as the micro-issues that affect a specific lone worker

fulfilling a certain role.

Connexion2 manufacture the award winning Identicom®

Lone Worker Device (LWD) range, the only dedicated LWD

to feature the unique product form of an identity card-holder

containing mobile phone technology.

Identicom can help a user get the right assistance in the

event of a user suffering verbal abuse or attack, a ‘Man

Down’ situation after a trip or fall as well as the ability to be

located via GPS. The device also includes the ability for a

user to participate in two-way communication where

deemed appropriate, with an Alarm Receiving Centre in a

‘Red Alert’ situation. A camera function is also avaliable to

assist the capture of images or stream video supporting

operations and to assist a tailored response.

The company also provides a mixture of training and

consultancy solutions that take a broader view of lone

worker safety over and above the specifics of devices. An

effectively trained workforce will be better qualified to reduce

the risks they face. Whether it’s through the creation of an

up to date lone worker policy, equipping staff through the

delivery of conflict management training or increasing

awareness through risk assessments: Connexion2 can help

you prepare a workforce to reduce risk.

Connexion2 supplies products indirectly through a network

of authorised channel partners in a number of countries

worldwide, ranging from lone worker specialists, security

companies and systems integrators. Connexion2 also sell

direct to market through its SoloProtect brand of solutions.

The company is approved through audit against BS8484,

the British Standard for Lone Worker Device Services,

enabling a guaranteed Police escalation via a Unique

Reference Number (URN) where deemed appropriate.

Introduction to Identicom

Identicom from Connexion2 is a unique and dedicated lone worker device (LWD) and is the result of extensive research into lone worker behaviour and the risks faced.

Whilst attending a Suzy Lamplugh Trust event in the year

2002 Craig Swallow, now MD of Connexion2, surveyed a

room of people passionate about lone worker safety. It

struck him that a discreet communications device to assist

lone workers was a clear platform upon which to base a

solution.

That idea became Identicom: a product uniquely styled as

an identity card-holder. The device is easily wearable and

not an obvious communications device to anyone a lone

worker encounters.

The device contains mobile phone (GSM) technology which

allows a user to discreetly open a definable one or two-way

audio channel to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) in the

event of being exposed to verbal abuse, attack,

incapacitation (‘Man Down’), or if feeling their safety is about

to be compromised. The device also features a camera

allowing the user to take images or discreetly stream video

during a ‘Red Alert’. An operator at the ARC can listen,

assess the situation and raise an appropriate response to

get help to the lone worker.

Events can also be recorded for future use; evidence

procured by Identicom has been used as part of

proceedings to gain criminal convictions previously.

Identicom meets the requirements of Sections 5.2.1 and

5.2.2 of BS8484, the British Standard for lone worker device

services. Identicom has been awarded ‘Secured by Design’

status from ACPO: the Association of Chief Police Officers

for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is also a key

component of the NHS Framework Agreement for the public

sector, currently the largest lone worker contract in the UK

and celebrated the shipping of its 100,000th device in March

2012.

Identicom is available in several product variants with a

range of features. The device can assist a lone worker by

capturing audio evidence, taking pictures or videos,

automatically raising an alarm in a ‘Man Down’ situation, has

the option of two-way communication and providing location

data through GPS. The devices also include three

multi-function buttons on the front of the device which are

discreetly covered by the identity card when not in use.

Each button can be used to call a specified number, trigger

a text (SMS) message to a specified contact or to enable a

GPS location upload to the Mobile Workforce Management

Platform (MWMP).

Also available, Identicom mobile allows a lone worker facing

infrequent risk to access much of the functionality

traditionally associated with the Identicom LWD but on a

smartphone. Identicom mobile is currently available on

Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, and Windows Mobile

smartphones and rugged PDA’s.

Connexion2 realises there is no such thing as a ‘one size fits all’ solution for lone workers. The company firmly believes

in utilising a suitable technology in line with user requirements, and as a result the company supply LWD’s with a range

of functionalities to choose from. This aids both the empowerment of lone workers and serves to increase staff morale,

enabling an organisation to improve efficiencies whilst meeting its duty of care.

As an example of the UK market, our analysis of data provided by the Office of National Statistics estimates that there is in

the region of four million lone workers employed in the UK. Each of these workers face a variety of risks at different

frequencies, thus putting pressure on the employee and impacting on the provision by an employer towards his or her safety.

The above diagram illustrates in more detail the numbers employed across a variety of job functions in the UK

in line with the type and level of risks that are regularly faced.

In addition to numbers employed, job functions are shown in line with increasing risk whether it be social risk (abuse / attack),

or environmental ’Man Down’.

From an international perspective, our analysis of data provided by Berg Insight suggests there are between 25 to 49 million

(minimum to upper level estimated) lone workers in the top 20 geographical markets currently supplied by Connexion2.

Lone worker safety is a global issue.

Statistics from Spain list the number of workers reporting an accident at

work over a 12 month period as being at 3.9%. Fatal accidents at work over

the same period were recorded at 332 excluding work related road traffic

accidents (which were recorded separately at 240 over the same period).

Risk Type and Frequency

10

What risks do your employees face?

Risks to lone workers generally fall into two categories:

1) Social risk posed by other people

2) Environmental risk posed by a location combined with an activity

The above diagram considers the type of risks faced whether it be social (abuse or attack) or environmental ’Man Down’ and

the frequency at which these risks occur. The appropriate Identicom-based solution is shown in line with the risks faced as

outlined above.

Connexion2 provides a range of LWD based solutions that cater for a variety of lone worker needs. The company does not

promote technologies for their own sake. Connexion2 Training and Consultancy Solutions are also overlaid on the diagram to

outline where risks can be reduced through effective training and policy.

Lone Worker Devices and Tracking

Safety rst....

Something we stress to our customers is that Identicom is a Lone Worker Device (LWD) first and foremost and is primarily

designed to be implemented as a product to improve the safety of a mobile workforce.

The tracking of workers can be contentious, however with over 160 attacks on UK lone workers every single day *, the ability to

locate an individual should the need arise, offers considerable safety benefits that can sit alongside valuable business

productivity benefits.

The entire Identicom range and Identicom mobile integrate with Connexion2’s Mobile Workforce Management Platform

(M.W.M.P.) due to their ability to store user positions and enable the delivery of alerts to a manager when moving between

geo-fences for example.

Each Identicom device has the capability for GPS data to be sent to M.W.M.P. through GPRS or 3G functionality. The location

information transmitted from the devices is only acted upon by the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) in the event of a user

initiating a ‘Red Alert’ on the device, putting the lone worker in control of when to be located, such as when they need

assistance. The information provided and the scale of options concerning location data is designed to help a lone worker in

distress to be located as quickly as possible.

Integration with the Mobile Workforce Management Platform provides an employer with a powerful management tool that

allows an organisation to access a range of business benefits in order to ease the flow of operations and improve efficiencies.

The subject of tracking is a sensitive issue to many workforces, that’s why our product range is diverse, enabling the most

appropriate solution to be utilised by an organisation. We recommend that any tracking of staff movement should be done

within a structured and agreed lone worker policy on the basis of tangible benefits to the lone worker and the business.

Identicom and Identicom mobile can be purchased as stand-alone devices or can include the M.W.M.P. additional option.

Lone Worker Safety and BS8484

Do you want a guaranteed Police escalation in the event of an incident?

The subject of lone worker safety is one that has

increasingly moved up the agenda in recent years in line

with an improved understanding of risks faced by front line

staff, health and safety legislation and the Corporate

Manslaughter Act of 2007.

In 2009 the BSI introduced the first British Standard for

‘Lone Worker Device Services’ named BS8484. The

standard was introduced to address the safety of staff and

improve the provision of lone worker services in the UK, and

involved ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) and

other practitioners within the security industry. It is also

anticipated that BS8484 will form the basis for a wider

European standard currently being drafted.

BS8484 also imposes a number of requirements on

providers of lone worker services if they are to be audited

against the standard and approved as compliant.

BS8484 comprises of dedicated sections relating to lone

worker services. Specifically:

Section 4: considers a supplier’s quality standing (ISO9001),

its financial stability and the appropriate insurances it should

have in place.

Section 5: focuses on the essential and desirable

functionality of a lone worker device.

Section 6: relates to the standard of Alarm Receiving Centre

element of a lone worker solution (ACPO also specify that

an ARC must meet BS5979 Category II another British

standard specific to ARCs).

The standard is also affecting a change of procedure with

regards to how the Police will respond to lone worker

alarms. Currently most Alarm Receiving Centres escalate a

lone worker alarm requiring a Police response through a

999 call.

However once audited and approved against the relevant

section of the standard*, an ARC is able to apply for a

Unique Reference Number (URN) from a Police force in

order to escalate the incident directly at a regional level.

BS8484 clarifies how the Police guarantee a lone worker

with a response in an emergency. BS8484 and ACPO Policy

thus ensure that any suppliers of lone worker solutions not

approved against the relevant sections of the standard

cannot guarantee a Police escalation. As the standard

becomes increasingly influential, this will become a key

consideration for any organisation procuring a lone worker

system for the next 12 months, 24 months or longer.

Connexion2 was first audited against BS8484 in March

2010 by the NSI (National Security Inspectorate) and is

uniquely positioned as a device vendor and solution

provider incorporating an ARC, requiring conformance

against sections 4, 5 and 6 of the standard. In addition, the

company’s Identicom lone worker devices are still the only

LWDs to achieve ACPO’s standard of ‘Secured by Design’

status due to their unique identity card form-factor and

discreet lone worker operation.

In March 2012 ACPO issued a statement outlining the

difference in response times between Type ‘A’ and Type ‘B’

alarms. In the context of a lone worker alarm, Type 'A'

alarms are where the solution provider meets the

requirements of BS8484 and the Alarm Receiving Centre

(ARC) meets both the requirements of BS8484 and BS5979

Category II, allowing the alarm receiving centre to report

directly into Police control rooms at a regional level for a

'Level 1 Immediate or Priority response'. Type ‘B’ alarms are

raised via 999 or 101 calls.

ACPO also stated: “When a Police response is given to a

Type ‘B’ alarm, experience shows that there is a significant

time delay in despatching a Police response compared to

the URN system, this is due to the questions that need to be

asked to verify if it is a genuine alarm situation. This time

lapse could be vital if a person is in immediate danger.”

* Alarm Receiving Centres must be audited against BS5979 Category II, and BS8484

Section 6 to apply for a URN for direct Police escalation at a regional level.

Any supplier stating compliance against any element of BS8484 should be able to

provide certification as proof of audit specific to the relevant section of the standard.

their duty of care to staff and allow lone workers themselves

and training to your staff or to your customers on your

behalf. The solutions are designed to provide education

and comprehensive support on all aspects of lone worker

protection – for the employer, the manager and the lone

Connexion2 training solutions are flexible and can be

bespoke to an organisation, allowing a company to

implement where most appropriate. The company can assist

in a number of ways: staff can be trained to deliver training

Connexion2 Training and Consultancy Solutions

An effective and up to date lone worker policy benets everyone.

The benefits of good policy and training are wide reaching. A valued workforce is more efficient, less likely to suffer stress,

illness or lost productivity and will look to change employment less frequently. Connexion2 teaching Solutions benefit the

front-line lone worker, the lone worker manager, the wider organisation and the Police.

Understanding the impact of lone worker safety and the financial implications to an organisation is extremely important, please

consider:

• The direct financial costs associated with absence through stress and injury, resulting

from frequent verbal abuse, a single attack or a ‘Man Down’ style scenario

• Sick pay, temporary and replacement staffing, higher insurance premiums, missed deadlines,

increased stress on existing staff and potential customer dissatisfaction

• The risk from corporate manslaughter legislation both corporately and

to individuals at manager level and above in an organisation
