Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome to the 2010-2011 academic year! Can you believe a new academic year is upon us and your student is ready to take the next step in their college career?

I hope the summer gave you some time to rejuvenate and prepare for the busy year that lies ahead. I am happy to report that over the summer we welcomed a record 1,200 new PFA members that brings our total membership to over 6,000 members! We are so thrilled as this allows the PFA to grow and provide further support to the entire membership.

Our goals for the upcoming year include expanding our regional networks, kicking off the football watch party program, growing winter family weekend, publishing our first parent guide, revamping the newsletter and implementing a new web based data management system. The new data management system will allow you to personally update your membership information any time you like, provide your regional network with communication tools and allow us to take credit card payments online. I am excited for the changes that lie ahead and will be sure to keep you updated as we move forward.

As you can see, the newsletter has been improving over the past year. I am excited for the opportunity to elevate the professional look and design of the publication through the hiring of Alex Notman as a graduate assistant. Kudos to Alex for her vision and hard work! We hope you enjoy the new look and flip book design.

Again, welcome back! I look forward to another exciting year and please feel free to be in touch any time by contacting us at [email protected].

Go Ducks!

At the University of Oregon, learning is not limited to just the classroom, or even just academic terms. Service opportunities like Alternative Breaks provide students with the opportunity to engage in learning through volunteerism and civic engagement. Sponsored by the Holden Leadership Center’s Service Learning Program (SLP), Alternative Breaks are multiday, substance-free, community service-learning trips that take place during the university’s traditional winter, spring and summer breaks. The Alternative Break (AB) program creates powerful learning opportunities through immersion based experiences that foster an attitude towards civic service, social change and cultural/global understanding and appreciation. Alternative Break participants travel in teams locally, nationally and internationally to engage in active service. Students have the opportunity to gain new perspectives on a wide range of social issues while meeting the needs of the local area and building upon community assets.

The AB program actively promotes leadership, community based service-learning, and civic engagement as integral aspects of the educational experience at the University of Oregon. The AB program accomplishes this by incorporating learning outcomes such as: advancement of relationship skills, communication ability, understanding and appreciation of human differences, cultural competency, social and civic responsibility and a commitment to public service and engagement throughout a lifetime.

Additionally, the AB program ignites critical and reflective thinking as a result of social engagement through complex community immersions on the local, regional, national and international levels by combing advocacy, reflection and meaningful conversation toward developing students’ leadership efficacy, skills and courage to engage in social action for positive community outcomes. One 2009 participant stated, “ASB Los Angeles was one of the best experiences of my life. Not only was I challenged emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, but I was able to be exposed to some of our society’s issues and reflect on them at a hands-on level. Moreover, my group was incredibly inspiring and it was a great pleasure to get to know each of them individually.”

As you well know, college is a huge investment in your student’s future. It’s very common for students to change their minds frequently as they experience the smorgasboard of classes, campus activities and opportunities for their future in the world of work. University Health Center

Dear Parents and Family Members,

It is hard to believe that we are approaching a new academic year but we are gearing up for the return of all the students to campus this fall. We are looking forward to another year of providing health care and prevention services to your student.

Here at the Health Center we have had a change in leadership over the summer as we hired a new director, Dana Mills. Dana has extensive experience from three other universities including the University of Michigan, Northern Illinois University, and most recently, Marquette University. He is the past President of the North Central College Health Association and chaired the Benchmarking Advisory Committee and Student Health Insurance Task Force for the American College Health Association. Dana holds a masters degree in public health and is passionate about serving students. We are thrilled to have him here.

We want to use this opportunity to remind you of services we provide students here at the Health Center. These include:

• Appointments to meet with doctors or nurse practitioners• Dental assessments, prevention services and referrals• Pharmacy for filling prescriptions and low cost over-the-counter items• Sports medicine and athletic trainers• Laboratory• Allergy and asthma clinics• Travel clinic for immunizations and safety information• Nutrition education• X-Ray services• Stress management resources such as Relax and Renew, massage and therapeutic touch• Health promotion

Our hours during the academic year are Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Fall hours begin September 21st. We encourage students to make an appointment to see a clinician by calling us at

10

Page 11: Connections September

541-346-2770. Please remind your student that they have access to a nurse to answer questions anytime we are closed by calling our appointment line. The nurse will advise your student on what to do until we are open. Also they may check our website at http://healthcenter.uoregon.edu for emergency and after-hours information.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and thank you for reminding your student about the Health Center. This includes reminding them to come in and get their flu shot. This year it is only one shot (combined seasonal and H1N1) and the vaccine has already arrived. All they need to do is come into the Nurse Specialty Clinic for their $15 vaccine. This may be billed to their Duck Web account or they may pay cash.

Until next time,

Paula StaightDirector Health Promotion

Annual Giving

We hope you are as excited as we are to have the 2009-2010 school year begin, and to have your son or daughter begin their Oregon experience!

Ducks are given such fabulous opportunities while at the UO. From vast study abroad options to world class professors, to club sports and academic advising to help prepare for the future, the list goes on and on. What most students and parents are not aware of, is that so many of these opportunities are provided by past generations of Duck alumni and Duck parents.

This year more than ever before, your gifts make a difference in the lives of our Duck students and most importantly your Duck.

When you get a phone call from one of our Duck Callers, not only do they have a lot of great advice to offer you about your students time at UO, but they’re also calling to let you know just how far your gift can go in enhancing the UO student experience.
