Orange Regional: A Culture of Caring and Support Caring and Concern Helps Co-Worker in Need Below is a letter thanking all employees who graciously contributed to a recent bake sale to benefit the family of one employee who tragically lost her teenage son.

LEAN Initiative Update

Many employees have participated in initial training since the November launch of Orange Regional’s improvement initiative, the LEAN Hospital. More than 200 Orange Regional employees are now familiar with LEAN thinking as the result of attending a 90-minute introduction presentation. You may have even noticed a few senior leaders in scrubs as they, too, participate in training. LEAN is an approach to continuous improvement of processes that has been adopted by organizations around the world. It’s endorsed by the Joint Commission and is a cornerstone in Orange Regional’s goal to become the best regional hospital in the state of New York.

Our first full-scale improvement project, called a Kaizen event, was held in mid-November. A Kaizen event is a three to five day project focused on improving a specific area of the hospital. During the event, a team of eight staff members worked on the admission process, with the goal of simplifying admission assessment forms and reducing completion time, while still being 100% compliant with regulatory and accreditation requirements. The improved admission assessment process is being trialed and the results will be released in the near future. Our goal is that all 2,500 Orange Regional employees will attend the Introduction to the LEAN Hospital presentation and Kaizen events will continue into next year. For more information, call Vice President of Quality, Susan Hodgson, at 342-7215.

To All,

I wanted to send out a Thank You to all our wonderful co-workers. The bake sale to benefit the family of Linda Youngblood was an enormous success!

The amazing generosity and contribution (both baked and eaten) enabled us all to give a little relief to her family during this time of grief and intense sorrow.

A very special thank you goes out to our wonderful volunteers - Nora from the Arden Hill campus, who went to the Pavilion to help out there. Joanie, Fran and Tara were my anchors at the Horton Campus who ran things the whole day virtually by themselves!

I am reminded daily at the depth of caring and concern that everyone here has for each other as well as our patients!!!

Thank you,

Bette Kelly

Quality of Healthcare Provided Comfort and Peace in Time of NeedBelow is a letter from the family and friends of a patient who wished to thank Orange Regional employees for the support and care they provided during the last days of the patient’s life.

Helping to Give the Gift of LifeOrange Regional’s staff was part of a team that took a tragic situation and helped turn it into several miracles. It all began when a 14-year-old boy was brought to the Horton Emergency Department with a severe headache. It was determined that he had a spontaneous bleed in his brain, a medical condition that appeared without apparent cause. Neurosurgeon, Dr. Alleyne Fraser, took the boy to the operating room where all efforts to treat this condition were attempted, without resolve. The Critical Care Unit (CCU) team continued care for the boy in the middle of the night and began to console and support his distraught family. While all were saddened by the circumstance, the team broached the topic of organ donation. Through the collaboration and cooperation of our physicians, nurses and the organ donor team, the family agreed and the gift of life was offered to six regional patients in life-threatening situations. Jessica Casey, RN spent 16 critical hours caring for the patient and his family after his admittance to the CCU. Intensive critical care was needed in order to keep the boy’s organs viable until procurement. Jessica’s constant presence and perseverance helped her connect with the family and provided reassurance and stability during this tragic time. Five surgical teams from regional hospitals were contacted by the organ donor network and miracles were accomplished throughout our region due to the family’s courage and willingness to share the gift of their son’s organs. A 17-year-old girl on dialysis three days a week received his right kidney. An 8-month-old baby received a chance at life with the donation of the boy’s small lobe of the liver. A 17-year-old girl with congenital hepatic fibrosis and polycystic kidney disease received his left kidney and left lobe of the liver. His heart saved the life of a 46-year-old man; his lungs saved a 63-year old man and his pancreas saved the life of a 53-year-old female.

Our staff’s efforts, in collaboration with the New York Organ Donor Network, changed the lives of many individuals, while showing compassion, concern and great care for the 14-year-old child and his family. Thank you to all!

Dear Mr. Batulis,

As a family and with our most sincere and deepest feelings, we would like to thank all that were a part of Suzanne’s care during the three weeks that she was at ORMC, Horton Campus. Through the weeks that Sue struggled to regain her health, each person that came into contact with her gave of themselves in a compassionate, caring and sincere manner. The quality of healthcare given to Suzanne at Horton allowed her the comfort and peace that she needed during those days. As her time with us came to a close, all of you in the Lab, ICU and CCU along with those in the Tucker Unit shared with Sue a dignity and respect for life, her life, that we will forever remember and hold dear. Please accept from all of us, her family and friends, our most heartfelt thank you. The Family and Friends of Suzanne Rhein Delaney
