Peter Koestenbaum, leadership theorist, has observed that, “The leadership mind is spacious. It has ample room for the ambiguities of the

world, for conflicting feelings, and for contradictory ideas… the central leadership attribute is the ability to manage polarities” (Leadership: New & Revised).

In the midst of the polarization of our wider world, I’m grateful that First Baptist Church Greensboro seeks to be a spacious place. As a community of common faith in Jesus Christ, the local church can be an alternative community, where people are bound together and held together in love, just as hoped for in Colossians 3:14. I think what Koestenbaum observes of leaders is also true of leading communities of faith: at our best we exhibit the ability to embrace difference and manage polarities.

In wider ecclesial life, polarization exists nowhere more clearly than in discussions and divisions over human sexuality, and specific questions about the inclusion and affirmation of the gay community. By now, this discussion has arisen in some form in the life of the majority of congregations and denominations. With the Supreme Court decision about marriage in June of 2015, such questions and discussions became even more prominent. They have arisen in the life of our church in a variety of ways – most publically as I preached a sermon calling us to consider what it means to be a church like us at such a time, and to be discerning about our church’s relationship with the gay community (“Christ Interrupted,” June 28, 2015).

As you might expect, opinions in a spacious church like ours are varied, even amidst the love we share for Christ and one another. As our Deacons have prayerfully considered how our church can most faithfully respond to our wider world and questions of sexuality, many have observed fear and anxiety in ourselves and in others – fear of debate, or imminent decision, and ultimately of potential polarization and division. As such, the Deacons think we should focus less on formal discernment or decision at this time, and more on what it means to be a church united in love amidst varied opinions.

As I have shared with the Deacons, we are a church that can do hard things, but I think there are at least 4 foundations upon which any challenging church conversation must be built:

1. We understand our diversity of opinion and embrace it as a strength.

2. We accept dialogue as a mode of response to such diversity.

3. We believe now is the time for such dialogue.4. We believe this is a process for moving forward in

discernment.

Much of our discussion as Deacons has focused on the 4th foundation – process – as though the other 3 are firmly established. We have realized that the other three take work, too. As such, the Deacons and I want to move forward in working on our understandings of diversity, dialogue, and how these questions might be arising in the life of our church at this time. We are forming a Study Group of lay leaders to help assist ministers in providing quality, balanced elective opportunities for members and friends of First Baptist to consider questions of sexuality and faith, hoping to encourage capacity and space in our church for the mutual understanding, range of perspective, and respect of diversity that makes us a distinct community of faith acknowledging the work of the Spirit in each individual’s life.

You will be hearing more about opportunities for study and discussion of the various ways Christians are responding to human sexuality – including Bible Study, panel discusions, and other forms of conversation. These are elective offerings for those in our church who have expressed interest and a desire for us to offer resources. You will not, however, be hearing about a formal discernment process at this time. We will rely on the Deacons to gage whether a time for dialogue and discernment will arise in the future. For now, a study team and an approach to education and conversation can help us be prepared to do hard things, and to respond to various challenges with the unity and understanding that represent the best of our church. After that June sermon, as I’ve shared with some of you before, I was approached by a church member who said, “I don’t think you and I agree on this, but I need you in my life.” A polarized world needs a place like that, for such a place reflects the wideness of the mercy of God. I’m grateful to be pastor of such a spacious place.

Community Garden - A Gathering Placeby Kim Priddy

T his is a picture of my home “community” garden. It does not look like all that much right now, but this past year it provided strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, peppers, lettuce

and broccoli. It has also provided so much more than that for my family. There are times that I look around while pulling weeds or picking vegetables and notice that my husband and one or all of my children are also there with me. It may be for only a fleeting moment or longer, but it is community time with my family. Our conversations vary from what is growing (or supposed to be growing) to what is going on in our lives. It has been holy ground and time for our family. Our hope this spring is to create that same kind of space on our grounds. We are working with one of our ministry partners, Peacehaven Community Farm, to develop a plan for our community garden. It will be a place of invitation for our faith community, Westerwood neighbors and ministry partners to gather and work the ground and be in communion with one another. Also there are so many possibilities with the fruits of our labor: Agape Meal, Backpack Beginnings, sharing with neighbors, etc… It is truly exciting. Be on the lookout for additional information. Ministering in Thailand by Chris Barbee

God has given us the opportunity to love the children and youth of the Roi Et province in northeastern Thailand with no strings attached, through teaching English, music, and life skills. By living on the campus of a

government-run welfare boarding school, we get to build deep relationships with students in and out of the classroom. We are serving alongside a Thai foundation guided by Thai Jesus followers who know how to connect the love of Jesus with the needs and hearts of their people. Most of our students come from poor, broken homes, raised in folk-Buddhist traditions, where fear of spirits and the need to make merit tend to be the driving spiritual forces in their lives. We have the privilege of sharing stories of Christ’s powerful love and hope with them for the first time. We also lead two camps for our students in Bangkok each year, a 30-day academic camp in March/April and a 10-day moral studies camp in October. The latter is focused on journeying with our students as they experience how Jesus (continued on page 11)

Hunger continues to be one of the greatest problems facing our world today. It is interrelated with poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, lack of

access to safe drinking water, and sanitation. Natural disasters, wars, and climate change also contribute to people not having secure access to food production. Many people around the world spend 80% of their income to buy food, usually basics such as wheat, rice or corn. For 95 years BWAid (of Baptist World Alliance) has responded to people in need during times of disasters and human suffering. Your special offering will continue to help those in need around the world.

can transform their actions, hearts, lives, and communities! At the end of our last October camp, the staff felt led to wash our students’ feet to show them God’s love in action. One girl came to Dora and I afterwards and insisted on washing our feet as well. When we tried to deter her, she said, “No, I must wash your feet as well, because if you had never come to our school, I would never have met Jesus.” God used the witness and excitement of one of our students, that had encountered the love of Jesus, to be a catalyst for starting a youth group in our home. Now every Wednesday night we have between 15-35 teenagers packed into our kitchen and living room to play games, eat snacks, sing Thai and English worship songs, and hear Jesus stories. In order to avoid leading our students into a Western understanding of Christianity, the church, and faith, we simply tell stories from the Thai bible, and ask open-ended questions. Then we have the privilege of witnessing the Holy Spirit leading and growing our students as they consider how Jesus can actually transform their lives!

The Preschool is so fortunate to have Miss Susan Burkholder, of Musicare, two days a week for music instruction. Miss Susan teaches all classes, except infants. The 4 year olds and 5 year olds also have music once a week with Miss Terri, FBC’s Assistant Minister of Music.
