From the President’s DeskDEAR FRIENDS — I can still hear my mom’s question …. “What do you say?”

As a child, whenever we received a gift, a compliment or if someone did something nice for us there wasan absolute expectation that we would respond by saying “Thank you.” If we forgot because we were tooexcited about the gift and wanted to run out the door to play with it, or if we forgot simply because as ayoungster you … well, forget! My mom would call out to us those words that are emblazoned in mymemory, “David, what do you say?” And I would run back in, say those words, and then imprint evenmore thanks by going to tell all my friends what a great person the gift giver was and what a great giftthey gave!

Thank you is a powerful phrase in this world. It conveys deep appreciation to the giver and it honors themwith high praise. In history, giving thanks has been a powerful and necessary expression.

In our LSS history, we could not do the work that we do without all of you. Your prayers, volunteer hoursand donations make the mission of the church come alive. For that, all of our staff and the people we serveextend to you a deep and heart-felt thank you. You will read in this issue many words of thanks from peoplewho have been directly touched by your generosity. “What do we say?” We say to you, thank you!

On another and related note, I wanted to lift up a deep thank you that was extended a few weeks ago. One ofour long time staff members, Ron Hauser, was awarded a State of Wisconsin, “Social Worker of the Year”award! Wisconsin Secretary Reggie Bicha from the Department of Health and Human Services presentedthe award to Ron with thanks for all the work he has done over his career. Ron is an LSS Vice Presidentwho oversees several lines of service including our work with children, families, older adults and housing. He has a passion for and expertise in, working for children of all ages. We are so proud of Ron’s workand I invite you to join all of us at LSS in thanking him for this incredible accomplishment. You’ll readmore about it in the pages to come.

We also extend a deep thanks to the one our mission statement is based on, “motivated by the compassionof Christ…” for the light he brings into the darkness and the hope in the midst of despair. That is whatwe reflect in our work and through your incredible partnership. Thank you.

Warm regards,

Thank you

is a powerful phrase in

this world.

This is especially true for three families from LaValle, Wis. When one family decided to adoptfour special needs children, a connection wasmade resulting in four additional children findingtheir forever families. Eight lives were changedand countless more joyfully connected to them.

Kim Bahr, an LSS adoption worker, was able tosee and make sure this amazing story unfolded.“Some families have amazed me more than others, but none more than these three families, who justhappen to be siblings,” stated Kim.

In January of 2006, Kim was assigned to do afoster home conversion with Clint and TishriCarlson. Clint had spent a few of his teenage yearsin foster care and it left a positive and lastingimpression on him. Fostering was a natural fit forthis family, so much that they wanted to adoptthree siblings — Tynia, Kyana and Andre — whothey had in their home as foster care placements.

When describing the Carlson’s Kim said, “When Imet this family, I could tell right away that theyhad ‘what it takes’ to be the adoptive parents of

All in the FAMILYAll families who adopt through LSS share a connection.Depending on the type of adoption, families may share a deep connection with birthparents, the birthcountry of their child, an LSS adoption worker, other adoptive parents, and much more. These connectionsare lifelong and heartfelt, and touch so many lives.

Eight special needs children found their forever families with threecouples from La Valle,Wis. Pictured above in theback row (l-r) are parentsLuke and Jenna Repka,Clint and Tishri Carlson, and Mary and DeanOsgood. Jenna, Tishri andMary are sisters makingthis family connectionextra special.

special needs children…the ability to advocate fortheir children and a sense of humor! I trulybelieve that not only do parents need to be able tomeet the children’s needs now and long-term; theydefinitely need to have a sense of humor.”

The Carlson’s did a phenomenal job getting thechildren the right evaluations and services to helpthem be more successful. Even driving into Madisontwo or three times per week for therapy was not abig deal for them. Once the three adoptions werefinalized, the Carlson’s decided that they wantedto help more special needs children, so they werematched with Taejon, who had severe attachmentissues. Again, they proved to be very resourceful ingetting Taejon the evaluations and services he needed, thus improving his self-esteem and confidence.Taejon was adopted a few months later.

This family’s connection did not stop there. TishriCarlson’s sister and brother-in-law, Mary and DeanOsgood, also had three foster children with specialneeds in their home that they wanted to adopt. SoKim connected with the Osgood’s to make theirforever family a reality.

Like her sister, Mary and Dean Osgood proved tobe very resourceful with finding services neededfor Aliya, Deziree and Alexander. The Osgood’salso had the right demeanor and sense of humor.“When you have three young special needs childrenin your home, all vying for attention at the sametime, it can be overwhelming for a lot of people —not so for Mary and Dean,” continued Kim.“They are able to ‘go with the flow’ all withsmiles on their faces.”

“Our children obviously are not perfect, but theycouldn’t be more perfect for us. All of our children have been deeply affected by an array of trauma, abandonment, and mental illness,”

stated Mary Osgood. “Thankfully we have compiled a knowledgeable and dedicated networkof professionals — Kim and LSS especially — whohave been vital in helping our children with thehealing process.”

Unbeknownst to Kim, Tishri and Mary’s other sister,Jenna Repka and her husband Luke, had been doingvisits with a little girl named Diamond who was thebiological sister of Taejon (Tishri’s son). TheCarlson’s wanted to adopt Diamond, in order tokeep the siblings together, but knew they had a loton their plate with their four adopted children, plustheir two biological children as well.

After meeting Diamond on several occasions, theRepka’s decided that this was definitely what theywanted to do. So Kim helped make this adoptionconnection happen as well. And as with the othertwo families, the Repka’s also went above andbeyond giving Diamond the home and resourcesshe needs to thrive.

These three families with eight special needs childrenhave kept the adoption connection going by sharingtheir story and knowledge with many others. Dueto the children’s extensive issues and their need forsupport, the families have started a support groupopen to other families with special needs children. This gives them the opportunity to share effectivetechniques, training and sometimes vent aboutfrustrations, which helps them to keep their senseof humor alive and well.

“It was so much fun working with all of themknowing that the women are all biological sisters,”finished Kim. “All three of these families should becommended for the wonderful work they have doneand for their dedication to children!”

Life is Good! Life is good…100 years of good! Four residents in two LSS residentialfacilities are celebrating their amazing lives this year. Rose, Phyllis,Doris and Frances all share this 100th birthday year together, and paytribute to their wonderful lives through their families, good friends, andthe grace of God.

“They really are living independently with no extra cares,” says LoisHaag, the Eastridge Estates Manager where Rose, Phyllis and Doris live.“All of us at Eastridge Estates look up to them as perfect examples ofwhat we want to be when we are 100 years old!”

Rose Solem turned 100 years old on January 30, 2010. She has lived atEastridge Estates for seven years. Rose keeps herself very active. Lutheran Social Services (LSS) participatesin Project FACE, which is a cooperativeeffort among four non-profit mental healthagencies in Dane County. This cooperativeprovides quality group counseling for individuals in need. H.E.R.S (HealthyEmpowerment, Responsibility, andSupport) is one of the groups LSS pro-vides. This 12-week group is designed tohelp women learn to deal with anger inconstructive ways. Women who participatehave been arrested after an angry outburstescalated to fighting and are given theoption to attend counseling in lieu of prosecution. Many share similar stories —usually chaotic childhood experiences thathave lead to instability in their relationships, their jobs, and their day-to-day lives.

Recently a young woman, named Emily, in the H.E.R.S. group shared her own dysfunctional childhood experiences with adrug-addicted mother and alcoholic father. She described being misunderstood as achild, being misdiagnosed with ADHD,then struggling with peer relationships andunderachieving academically due to thetroubles at home. She specifically describedthe troubles as a young teen, and how shenow wished she could give back to otheryoung teens struggling like she did.

The group therapist invited Emily to cometo the anger coping middle school group, also run by LSS, and share her experiencewith these girls about what she has learnedand how she has succeeded. Emily wasvery excited to take advantage of thisopportunity to connect with and help thesemiddle school-aged girls.

In this short meeting, the girls were reallyable to connect with Emily and her story, and they highly identified with the challengesEmily faced throughout her childhood. This shared experience allowed the girls to express their feelings about their currenthome life and its impact on their schoolexperience.

After initially meeting Emily, the girls continued to ask when she was comingback as they had more to tell her. Emilyagreed to join the group for another week.It is still too soon to tell how Emily’s presence will affect these girls in the long-run, but it is clear that a therapeuticconnection was made and has had animpact on all involved, especially Emily.

Behind LSS’ mission statement — Motivated by the compassion of Christ, we help peopleimprove the quality of their lives — is a promise to those we serve, and it’s because of you thatthis promise is realized. We at LSS are so thankful for the support churches and donors havegiven over the years. Your contributions have made a real difference in our programs and in thelives of our clients. Here are some examples of how you have helped realize our promise.

Erin came to LSS’ Voices For Youth program inEscanaba, Mich. as an 18 year old high school seniorin danger of not graduating with her class of 2009.She had been kicked out of her home because shecould not get along with her mother, and living withher father or other family members was not possible. She needed a place to live and help with schoolproblems. As LSS staff began to work with Erin, theydiscovered that she was suffering from depression, which was contributing to her failure at school. Erinmoved into the LSS shelter apartment in April, 2009and got into counseling and medical treatment tohelp her depression.

She was not able to complete all of her credits tograduate in June but she did enroll in MichiganWorks “Earn While You Learn” program whichprovided her with summer income and also gaveher the chance to earn the credits needed to get herdiploma. Erin worked with a group of six VoicesFor Youth clients to complete a business plan for ayouth-run Teen Center in the town where she lives. The young people were able to earn up to threehigh school credits when the project was completed. However, Erin was still one credit short to get herdiploma so staff helped her design a project of herown to complete for her last credit. She chose tocreate a business plan for a used furniture recyclingbusiness called, “Terra Nova Recycling” which willbe operating by June of this year. This earned Erinher diploma and she is now enrolled as a student atBay de Noc Community College.

Erin was invited to speak at a statewide youthconference about her experience in creating the plansfor both the Teen Center and the recycling business. The Michigan Works group was so impressed withher progress that she was invited to speak at aNational Youth Entrepreneurship conference inAlbany, New York, which she did during spring break.Erin is hoping to turn this experience into employmentfor the summer. She was especially excited aboutthis trip because it was the first time she has been

on an airplane, the first time she has been toNew York or anywhere away from home

and it has also helped improve herrelationship with her mother. Her

depression is under control andshe has hopes and plans for

the future. As Erin puts it,“Who knew that all ofthese good thingswould happen to me?”

The Three Amigos

Nakia, Wendi and Shelly are new roommates in an LSS group home for persons with disabilities. Until recently each of them lived with roommates who were not at the same cognitive or physical level. Realizing the opportunities for these women and other clients, LSS staff arranged for new living arrangements to maximize their quality of life.

Since January, Nakia, Wendi and Shelly are always on the go! They now do fun activities like spa days where they have foot soaks, paint nails, and put on lotions. In the mornings before work they love to help each other by fixing hair and makeup. And, after work they chat about the day, play games and just enjoy being together.

In the short time they have been roommates, the three of them are there for each other no matter what, and they are the happiestwhen they are all hanging out. Much of this type of connection did not happen when they lived with other clients. By puttingclients together with similar needs has made them flourish in multiple ways — improving the quality of their lives.

FACE Collaboration

Hello,You may or may not rememberme, but I was a resident atjourney south and one of your clients in late 2004 tomid-2005. I am contacting you to thank you and the Hommestaff for what they have doneto attribute to my currentsuccess.

I am currently workingtowards my bachelor’s degreein psychology to achieve mylong-term goal of procuringmy PhD in the field. I havea beautiful house with a bigyard. I own my own vehicle, and I have a baby girl onthe way, which I am readyfor, not only financially but mentally and emotionallyas well.

Along the way I did comeacross some struggles that my experience at Homme didprepare me to handle. If itwas not for Homme andLutheran Social Services, Ido not think I would bewhere I am at today. It’sfunny, after being away fromHomme for so long I realizedI took th most away from onestaff person I clashed withthe most — Heidi the unitmanager. I used to avoid her all the time, but now Iam hardnosed and tough onpeople. I even use examplesshe gave me in my currentconversations. It is strangehow things like that work. Thank you for everything.

Sincerely, Jordon

A Note to HOMME “If it was not for Homme and Lutheran Social Services, I do not think

Stern Family Update:We have welcomed our new son Reggie SalvadorStern into our home on December 23, 2009. Reggiehas come to us from Manila, Philippines. He is 13years old and is in the seventh grade.

He is a beautiful blessing from God and we aredelighted to be sharing our lives with him. The tripto the Philippines went off without a hitch. It wasamazing! I could see the hand of God at work withall the details we needed to fall into place along theway. We had an amazing driver and guide thatLutheran Social Services hooked us up with. Theykept us safe and sound, and showed us the rich historyof the country. We found the people of Manila to bewonderfully gracious, welcoming, and friendly.

It was an overwhelming feeling when we finally gotto meet our new son. I wrapped him in a huge hug,and told him I loved him and was so happy hewould be part of our lives. My other sons eachhugged him. Then Brandon wrapped him in a hugebear hug, lifted him off the ground and spun himaround. Reggie had a huge grin on his face, butturned away shyly and wiped his eyes furtively. Wewere able to visit him at the orphanage that day andwere very impressed with that facility. The kids wereclean, well fed, and loved. They were happy andsinging and laughing.

Reggie has a sweet, gentle, disposition, a wonderfulsense of humor, and is very smart. He understandsalmost everything we say to him in English, but hasa harder time coming up with the words he wants tosay. He was quiet for the first few weeks, but hasbegun talking more. We have been doing a lot of funfamily activities including sledding, roller skating, swimming, and playing lots of board games andcard games. He and Chris are in Tae kwon do. Hereally enjoys pool and darts. He has been going toschool and has made lots of new friends.

Reggie has been a wonderful blessing from Godto our family. Adopting him has brought changewithin our family dynamics. Because of his presence,we have all grown closer and are enjoying eachother more. We have found ourselves laughingmore, worrying less about what needs to be done, and spending more time enjoying each other.Don’t get me wrong, I spend lots of time talking toGod, sometimes asking him to get me through thenext hour. It hasn’t been easy. But it has been good.Sometimes I wonder how this body can contain allthe love I feel for Reggie without exploding. I amyet again in awe of the blessings God sends yourway when you honor him through obedience.

Thank you LSS for the part you played in bringingReggie into our lives.

—Brandon, Ann, Chris, Collin and Reggie, aka the new and improved Stern Family.

ne of the quiet joys of working at LSS is the opportunity that we, as Advancement staff, have to meet and grow in relationship with those who

care for the ministry of LSS and those we serve.

Shortly after the first of the year, we heard the sad news of the death of one of thesefriends — Allen E. Fox of Sparta, Wis. In many ways the story of Al Fox was much likemany of this “greatest generation.” He was a hard working farm boy from westernWisconsin who gained a work ethic and love of family as a youngster, who marchedacross Europe after D-Day, who saw far corners of the world in his work. But he made alife with a keen devotion to family and friends back home in western Wisconsin wherehe earned the greatest respect and deepest affection of those close to him. Al was hardworking, frugal and humble — a wealthy man in the best sense of the word — wealthyin the love and respect of family and friends.

Throughout his long life, Al was inspired by the model of love, faith and hard workprovided by his mother, Esther Erickson Fox. And among Al’s final gestures was onethat honored his mother and created a permanent legacy of care and concern in hername. Funded by a gift he made through his will, Al created the Esther Erickson FoxEndowment Fund. Held and managed by the LSS Foundation, the Esther Erickson FoxEndowment will provide financial support to LSS programs helping children, youth andfamilies in Monroe and LaCrosse Counties. And so, the spirits of two remarkable peopleand the model of caring they provided continue to live and serve into the future.

We join together to thank Al for his stewardship and extraordinary foresight, and Mrs. Foxfor the quiet inspiration she provided. What a remarkable story and how very gratefulwe are to both. If you would like to learn more about creating a permanent endowmentfund to honor a loved one, please contact LSS Vice President for Ministry Support, JayPeterson at (800) 488-5181 ext. 3073 or [email protected]

Lives are being rescued, changed and saved throughthe ministry of Lutheran Social Services (LSS) ofWisconsin and Upper Michigan because of the generosity of those who have provided financial support. You may not be able to hear it personally, but there are people served across this two-state areawho thank God everyday for your prayers and giftsof money in support of the work that has touchedtheir lives. As St. Paul put it in his letter to theCorinthian followers of Christ, “This service thatyou perform is not only supplying the needs ofGod's people but is also overflowing in manyexpressions of thanks to God.” (2 Corinthians 9:12)

Indeed, contributions for 2009 totaled nearly $1.9Million (not including Gifts-In-Kind) toward a goal of$2.3 Million. Of the more than 3,000 gifts received,691 gifts were from new sources and 604 gifts werefrom sources that had supported the ministry of LSSin the past but not in the previous year (2008). Ofparticular interest in what was a year of severe economic downturn, 30% of the gifts received werean increase over the previous year, while only 10%of our supporters reduced the size of their gifts.

Gifts-In-Kind were strong in 2009 totaling nearly$500,000. The category of gifts-in-kind includesoffice, clinic and program space that was provided toLSS free of charge or at reduced cost, as well asclothing, furniture and other tangible items utilized inprograms or provided directly to those in need.

The 496 congregations of the Evangelical LutheranChurch in America that supported LSS in 2009 pro-vided more than $805,000 in financial supporttoward the total amount of charitable gifts received, aslight decrease over the year before. This represents

In addition to gifts given in support of current ministry, there were also gifts designated for the endowment, including $115,355 in testamentary giving. Earningsfrom the endowment serve as an ongoing source offunds to help keep the ministry of LSS on the “cuttingedge,” allowing LSS to meet expanding needs forministry in new and creative ways. In 2009 the LSSFoundation, Inc. Board of Directors distributed$1,488,320 in support of the nine lines of serviceoffered through LSS.

The Legacy Society grew in 2009 with the additionof nine new members. Legacy Society members arethose who have named LSS in their wills, estateplans or through the provision of deferred gifts suchas Charitable Gift Annuities and Trusts. The totalmembership of the Legacy Society now stands at 144.

In the midst of increased demand for ministry anddiminishing resources from government programsand fees for services, the generosity of those whowillingly give of time and treasure makes it possiblefor LSS to continue as a premier provider of services. Thanks is expressed on behalf of all those whose livesare touched and transformed through your generosity.

“. . . in their prayers for you theirhearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God hasgiven you. Thanks be to God for hisindescribable gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:14-15)

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is launchingThrivent ChoiceSM this spring 2010. It is a new giving program that lets Thrivent members helpchoose where Thrivent Financial gives back.

If you are a Thrivent member (policyholder orowner of another financial product), you are eligibleto participate in one or two ways:

• Voting – All benefit and associate members willbe eligible to "vote" to distribute a portion ofThrivent Financial's charitable funds among ashort list of national charities (Lutheran andnon-Lutheran), one to two times per year.

• Choice DollarsSM – Approximately 30% of benefit members will be able to direct ThriventChoice Dollars to thousands of Lutheran non-profit organizations, including Lutheran congregations. (Approximately 75% of past participants in the GivingPlus® program willbe eligible to direct Choice Dollars.)

Eligibility for Choice Dollars is based on a benefitmember’s insurance premiums, account values andvolunteer leadership. Most eligible benefit memberswill be able to direct between $25 and $100, andsome may be able to direct as much as $500. This is a great opportunity to increase your support— because of your membership in ThriventFinancial for Lutherans.

If you are interested in learning more about theThrivent Choice program, please call LSS at (800) 488-5181, ext. 3073 or see Thrivent’s website www.thrivent.com.
