SHARING THE ISRAEL EXPERIENCE
About the time this issue of the Bulletin arrives in your mailbox, I’ll be heading to Israel for a couple of weeks to visit my friends and family.
Last night I watched the movie “In Our Hands,” which tells the story of the Six Day War in 1967 from the perspective of the 55th Paratroopers Brigade, the unit that was the first to go into the Old City on that fateful day. I was reminded again of what a miracle it is that, for the first time in nearly 2,000 years, Israel is once again the independent national home for the Jewish people.
Israel is an amazing place. In terms of size and population, it’s about the size of New Jersey; but it packs an incredible amount of history, scenic beauty and controversy into that small space.
I’ve hiked the entire Israel Trail, from the border with Lebanon in the north to the border with Egypt in the south, over 600 miles zigzagging across the country. It has a little bit of everything: agricultural lands, mountains with forests, lakes, towns, cities, beaches, deserts.
Everywhere you go, you come face to face with our people’s history: from the ruins of King David’s Jerusalem, to the site of the Holy Temple, to places where the Maccabees fought. And there are ruins that, in some cases, are still functional structures left by various conquerors, but especially the Romans, Arabs, Crusaders and Ottomans. Important battlefields from the wars in ’48 and ’67 can be found in the middle of residential neighborhoods of Jerusalem.
And then there’s the controversy. We recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem in the Six Day War – which for Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem also marks the 50th anniversary of living under Israeli military rule.
I’d like to share “my” Israel with the Temple Beth-El community. Now’s the time to start planning for a congregational trip to Israel next year. My vision for a trip is one aimed more at adults than at families with children. I want to share a taste of all of the above – some of the scenic beauty, some of the history and some of the controversy. I think it’s good to talk to both settlers and Palestinians to get a personal feeling for the issues that divide us, and the prospects for peace. I’d arrange for Shabbat home hospitality for a Friday night dinner, so people can experience a real Jerusalem Shabbat with Israelis.
In very rough terms, the trip would probably be about 10 days long, in the spring of 2018. Cost is probably in the range of $2500-3000/per person plus airfare, including hotels, meals, etc.
If you might be interested in joining the trip, please contact me either by email,
[email protected] or phone at the shul, 313-0603.

Heidi Damsky and I had the privilege of spending an afternoon with Dorothy Shiland, and we learned of her deep commitment to Temple Beth-El. When she was a youngster, her family belonged to Knesseth Israel Synagogue and at age 19, she and Meyer were married at the Thomas Jefferson Hotel by Rabbi Werfel. As a married couple, they chose Temple Beth-El for their spiritual home, and Dorothy is rightfully proud of the fact that she has been a dues-paying member for 75 years! Very few have accomplished that. Dorothy and Meyer celebrated many life cycle events at Temple Beth-El, so when Meyer passed away, it was only fitting that she chose to establish an endowment fund in his memory. She never considered doing it elsewhere. This was her home. Not long afterwards, Dorothy realized that she wanted to be a part of that during her lifetime and see the many wonderful programs the Meyer and Dorothy Shiland Adult Program Enrichment Fund could help to provide and
would continue to do so in perpetuity. Dorothy and Meyer transmitted their love of Judaism and of Temple Beth-El to their children Judy and Ronald, evidenced by the fact that their son Ronald later became president of the synagogue they both loved. Music was a strong factor in Dorothy’s love of attending synagogue. She and Ronald were often seen together at Friday night or Saturday morning services. One of Dorothy’s fondest memories is when she and Rosalie Teninbaum co-chaired the Chanukah Supper. Many
months of work went into this endeavor, but it was a great benefit to Sisterhood and a culinary delight to those who attended. She also participated in the refurbishing of the mikvah at Temple Beth-El so that those who chose to use it could do so in a pleasant environment. Dorothy also looks forward to her monthly trips to Beth-El, where she volunteers to help prepare the bulletins for mailing. We owe a great debt of
gratitude to Dorothy and
Meyer for their generosity
and foresight.

Well, I started this list (below) for May’s Men’s Club article last month and I was so proud of it, that I just wanted to get it out there one more time. The cool thing is that not another month has gone by without the Men’s Club trying to give back to our community. Which leads us to our growing list number 8. I know you are not supposed to put out there your accomplishments and toot your own horn (Men’s Club horn) but it really needs to all fall in the lap of our Men’s Club Brothers. Without our 76 members and yes I said 76 (BOOM!!), we would not have been able to create this list below. So, THANK YOU, to all our Men’s Club Brothers who make this possible … without you, we would not exist.
Number 8 on our list is a tough one for me and many, many, many other people in our community … Celebrating the Life of Justin Cohen. But, I am honored that Temple Beth-El Men’s Club was in a position to be a sponsor of this event. I have added some information below in bold about it and I think this article will actually hit your mailbox after the event has taken place, but still wanted to let you know about it. It will be an annual event and if you want to get involved with it for next year, please do not hesitate to call me or David Nomberg.
I could not end this article without tipping my hat to Maurine Halpern, our Religious School Transition Coordinator. Number 7 on our list was an absolute BLAST and what I think was a HUGE success. The end of the Year Religious School Party at Red Mountain was so much fun for my little Ava and all the other kids, and WOW there was a lot of them, who got to experience an awesome event. Hiking through Red Mountain, all that our guide taught us and mixing in Jewish education and prayer the whole way … really! Could you ask for a better program for our children!? Great job!

Please join the friends and family of Justin Cohen as we celebrate his life on June 3, 2017 starting at 2 pm. The event will be held at Avondale Brewing Company. Enjoy live music by The Infernos. There will be corn hole, face painting and a bounce house for the kids. For more information and updates, please visit http://www.celebratejustin.com/ or on Facebook: Celebration of Life for Justin Cohen.
I always like to end by thanking all our Men’s Club members, you make being involved with Men’s Club fun and exciting and thank you for putting Temple Beth-El Men’s Club back on the map!

A Message from Executive Director Bob Greenberg
Birmingham and Temple Beth-El: Transitions and a Common Thread
I think about the Temple “community” in several distinct groupings. First is our immediate community of members and close friends who we touch regularly with services, programs and outreach. Second is the broader Jewish community in Birmingham with whom we interact often to coordinate a community-wide approach to Jewish life. And third is the non-Jewish community in Birmingham and nationally,
those for whom Temple Beth-El has been an icon of Jewish living for over 108 years.
I have shared lately that we are engaging more than ever with this last group, consisting of local and national guests, who visit our spiritual home. Most are studying Civil Rights and Holocaust Education, and we have developed a supportive relationship with the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center in this area. Historical tourism has become a growing trend, and for the city of Birmingham, this tourism is part of a remarkable (and long-overdue) turnaround. It is borne of a newfound commitment to acknowledging the past in order to look to the future. I am proud of the kind of honesty and introspection our city has shown in the area of race relations in recent years, embracing rather than avoiding change and transitions.
I also feel that our synagogue, through the Visioning process, has begun (yes, slowly, but surely) to engage in similar introspection and honesty. At our upcoming Annual Meeting, and in the coming year, you will see continued focus in this area, and we will look to you for support and patience with the transitions that are necessary as we develop a vibrant vision for the future.
One area of “nuts and bolts” transition here at TBE is in the area of staffing. We have two new administrative staff members who I want to introduce formally. Lisa Adams has taken over ably as Full Charge Bookkeeper. Most recently Lisa worked as an accounting assistant at Mitchell Mechanical, and she worked for seven years as bookkeeper for The Salvation Army. She is excited about returning to the nonprofit world, and I hope you have gotten to know her over the past few months. She can be reached at [email protected]. I also want to introduce you to Pam Williams who has begun working in our office as Office and Operations Coordinator. Pam comes to us with many years of experience working in a range of office settings, most recently as administrative assistant and grant programs director for the Construction Education Foundation of Alabama. She has experience both in office and operational work, and as a manager of grant programs. Pam can be reached at [email protected] or by calling our main office number.
Let us find ways to continue to navigate the transitions that we see in our community, and, like the city in
which we live, may our synagogue be strengthened by our honest engagement in change.
TBE’s Annual Congregational Meeting Join us at 6 pm, Tuesday, June 27, as we discuss Visioning Task Force updates, vote on the Temple Beth-El and Temple Beth-El Foundation Board slates and review the Annual Report. A light dinner will be provided. Childcare and kids’ activities will be available. Email Pam in the
TBE office at [email protected] to register your child(ren).
