CONNECTING SENIORS ACROSS OUR COMMUNITIES July 2018 Community Connections Summer is a very busy outreach time. Seniors Hub outreach knocked on 350 doors and connected with approx. 1000 seniors. As a follow-up to an earlier story, the Welcoming Seniors' Spaces folks at KiwassaNeighbourhood House hosted a bbq in the park. The event was inspired and organized by aperson who was homeless; they became a volunteer after connecting with the program.

Volunteer Impact workshops start up again in September (see event schedule, below). TheJune presentation by the Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network (PLAN) on how to create asupport network included ideas that work for people of all ages and abilities. One participanthad to move out of the area and felt empowered by learning how to make connections in theirnew community.

Collective ImpactSeniors involved with projects are completing follow-up surveys to assess any changes in theirlevel of isolation. Evaluators are also surveying and interviewing different partners tounderstand the benefits and challenges of taking a collective impact approach to our work.

Project Story

Seniors on the Move made the most of the B.C. Seniors Week, holding daily events June 4 -8. After a launch event with funders and media, project leaders headed for Lougheed SkytrainStation to promote the 211 Seniors Transportation Hotline, distribute resources and talk tocommunity members about a variety of transit resources.

On day 2, they were at the Arbutus Greenway with the Westside Seniors Hub. 100 seniors tried

out different electric bikes and a trike. Cycle City Tours donated the trike to the project. It will beavailable at future events for seniors to explore different options for transportation and fitness.

Day 3 was spent assessing the walkability of several different areas in Vancouver with partnersfrom SFU Gerontology Research Centre. They created a digital version of the "SWAN"assessment tool and also had it translated into Traditional and Simplified Chinese.

On day 4, they went on HandyDART and rode the North Shore Go Bus. Day 5 was spent withTransLink at the Tri-Cities Wellness Forum, sharing information about transit and options forwhen people stop driving.
