INTRODUCTION

National Green Corps is a major initiative of MoEF & CC launched in 2001.The objective of

the programme is to establish “National Green Army" in schools all over the state to create aware-

ness on environment and carry out action based programmes for protection and improvement of

environment. EMPRI is serving as Nodal Agency for NGC in Karnataka, since Jan, 2009.

Eco-Clubs each year undertake various activities at three levels. The first level of activity

namely awareness based activity eg. Rally/jathas, expert talks, educative film shows/seminars,

the second level activity is more about action and observation like survey outings, data collec-

tion, record keeping and the third level activity is more action oriented which entails activities

like Plantations, vermicomposting, water/energy conservation and sanitation. The Eco-Club pro-

gramme grant-in-aid has been increased from Rs-2500/- to Rs-5000/- per Eco-Club for carrying

environment awareness programme from the year 2017-18. The NGC team is involved in provid-

ing continuous support and assistance to implement and strengthen the progamme by conduct-

ing regular school visits and also conducting training/ workshops for eco-club teacher in-charge

and the district level officers.

Environmental Protection Day - Rashtriya Ikyatha Sapthaha

Environmental Protection Day of Rastriya Ikyatha Sapthaha was celebrated on 25.11.17 at

Environmental Management & Policy Research Institute as per the orders of Karnataka Govern-

ment order. The programme was held in the Chairmanship of Director of EMPRI. On the occasion

of this programme Dayananda Kannada High School which is an Eco-club school was invited.

Essay Competition as well as Quiz Competition was conducted for the School Children. Books and

Brochure on 23 Environmental Days was distributed for the prize winners. Rastriya Ikyatha

Sapthaha Pledge was also taken on this occasion.

Prakriti Khoj-Online Environment Quiz

Prakriti Khoj-Online Environment Quiz is a National level Online Quiz Programme which

had been launched by MoEF & CC under NGC Programme. Prakriti Khoj quiz programme consists

of 5 Rounds. Schools have sent the list of nominations of students to EMPRI. EMPRI consolidated

the list of students further sent to MoEF & CC for the generation of Password and User Id. The stu-

dents who had received the Password and User Id were eligible for participation in the quiz. A to-

tal of 2931 students had registered from Karnataka state. The first round of quiz was held be-

tween 25.09.17 till 27.10.17 and 908 students had been qualified for second round which was

held on 06.11.17 till 14.11.17. A total of 279 students had been qualified for third round quiz and

had been held on 20.11.17 till 24.11.17. As per the schedule the fourth round quiz 4.12.17 till

06.12.17 in which 43 students from Karnataka were qualified and the fifth round which was to be

held on 18.12.17 till 20.12.17 was not conducted as the fourth round was declared as the final

round and the winners list would be sent from MoEF & CC. All participants would get the e-

certificate and the winners would get cash prize & e-certificate.

World Ozone Day Prize Distribution

On the Occasion of World Ozone Day 2017 MoEF & CC conducted Painting and Slogan Writing Competition in the Eco-club schools .10 students from Karnataka got prizes EMPRI ar-ranged prize distribution ceremony on 21-02-2018, at the office of Hon’ble Minister of Forest, En-vironment and Ecology at Vidhana Soudha, Ambedkar Veedhi Bengaluru-1. Smt. Vandita Sharma, IAS Addl. Chief Secretary, Dept. of Forests, Ecology & Environment gave away the prizes to all the Prize winners.

World Wetlands Day

World Wetlands Day was celebrated on 02.02.18 to commemorate the signing of interna-tional treaty “’Ramsar Convention on Wetlands” in 1971 for conservation of wetland at the global level. This day was celebrated at Environmental Management & Policy Research Institute as per the orders of MoEF and CC. On that occasion Sarakki Government High School which was an Eco-club school was invited. Students were taken to a nearby wetland visit to Puttenahalli Lake for bringing awareness on the day. Importance of wetlands was explained to students. Bird identifi-cation activity was taken up by naturalists like Sri. T. S.Srinivasa and Sri.Prasad. Painting Competi-tion and Quiz Competition was conducted for the Children. Prizes in the form of Books and Certifi-cates were distributed for the winners.

The Convention’s mission is “the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local and na-tional actions and international cooperation, as a contribution towards achieving sustainable de-velopment throughout the world”.

NGC Team’s Visit to Schools

NGC team was supposed to conduct school visits as suggested and approved by the chair-man of State Steering Committee.

In order to disseminate information about NGC Programme and review the activities taken up by the Eco-clubs, NGC team of EMPRI visited a total of 44 schools as against the 40 schools tar-get fixed in State Steering Committee. During the school visit, the format of eco club report, utili-zation certificate and basic information in detail was explained to the in charge teachers. NGC team also addressed the eco club members in each school visited and noted the problems faced by the teachers while conducting the eco club activities and suggested easy methodology to imple-ment the same.

Training Programmes conducted under the NGC programme during 2017-2018

State Level Training

This training was conducted at EMPRI in 4 phases for the selected Head Masters and In charge teachers who are also part of the DIMC committees. It was a two days training which concluded with 72 participants from 34 districts of Karnataka. School annual report which has been prescribed by MoEF&CC was discussed in detail. There were question and answer sessions and also feedback was collected from the partici-pants. The participants were also given participa-tion certificates. Apart from this resource materi-als mentioned below were also given during the workshop.

SATCOM (Satellite Communication) tele-conference training was conducted on 28th Feb-ruary 2018 at DSERT (Department of State Edu-cational Research & Training) in which 3598 participants had participated from 34 Educa-tional districts.

That anta Heli Television Quiz programme for Eco-Club School children

Under the new Scheme on climate change (sub category – awareness creation for school children) a quiz programme – PARVA, for school children on climate change was conducted in collaboration with Doordarshan. At the outset list of 450 students studying in the 10th standard from the Education Department i.e. Bangalore North & South Talukas of Bangalore Urban District were obtained and subsequently the written examination was conducted on 07.08.2016. Further, out of 450 students 210 students attended the written exam and among 210 students 36 top scorers were selected from the written ex-am and the selected students were taken to the Doordarshan for the Climate Change Quiz programme and thereafter the recording of the quiz programme was started from 18.08.016 and ended on 24.08.2016

The same recorded programmes were telecasted in 22 episodes in the Doordar-shan Chandana TV channel in a programme titled, “Thatt Antha Heli” during the month of September, 2016. In the quiz programme environmental related books were given to the participator for the each right answer and also T-shirts, mementos and participation certificates were given to the participators. In the final round two cash prizes were kept for the winner and runner-up i.e. Rs. 5,000/- and 3,000/- respectively. EMPRI has planned to organize such more awareness programme in other social media in next finan-cial year.
