To those who don’t know about it, a word of advice: you should! The Children’s Library is one of the greatest treasures that our Island can offer. To kids and former kids of any age, it’s a magical enchanted castle in which to lose yourself, ei- ther reliving warm, wonderful memories, or making new memories that will last your lifetime. It’s a place that can ignite a child’s love for reading and writ- ing, sparking their imagination and their curiosity about the world. With its much-loved bears, the special elephant collec- tion and so many artifacts, all amidst a charming setting, the Children’s Library provides a unique, enriching environment for learning. The then-new publishers of the Island Clippings featured the library in our February 12, 2009 issue – just our fifth of what has become many, but one that has stuck in our minds and hearts ever since. Walking in the front door from the outside world is akin to putting on your favourite, most comfort- able warm sweater on a chilly day. When our granddaughter Emily comes to visit, the Chil- dren’s Library is at the top of her list for places to visit and things to do. And she’s not alone! Generations of island residents, cottagers and visitors know about this quiet little alcove away from their cares and woes and they keep coming back for more whenever they can. Everyone is welcome there and many are greeted at the door like a returning old friend … because that’s what they are. Kids, parents, grandparents and great-grandparents all have their own fond memories of the books and activities that this home-away-from-home offers. And the supply of “new cus- tomers” never dwindles, as kids from the Island’s Central School often make the Children’s Library an important after- school stop, enjoying initiatives like the ‘Blue Spruce Reading Program’. MANY OF US WHO HAVE CHILDREN or grandchildrenknow all about the Children’s Library in Richards Landing. To those who don’t know about it, a word of advice: youshould! The Children’s Library is one of the greatest treasuresthat our Island can offer. nurturing environment. Today, it remains one of a very fewprivately-operated libraries of its type in Canada, in the expertcare of librarian Dawn Stinson.

Dawn is assisted by her five-member Board of Directors,Dawn Tweedle (Chair), Colleen Brady, Bonnie Sabin, AnnaHamilton and Shawna-Lee Stubbe … each of whom is well-known for her own involvement as a volunteer in so manygood things that happen around here. Not surprisingly, theyeach have their own storehouse of warm memories and expe-riences about the Children’s Library, and they too are stillmaking new ones.

“It’s not just a warm, safe place for kids to go.” smiles Colleen.“It’s a key part of well-rounded learning and developing socialskills. It’s truly a child-centred experience.”

Even though the Children’s Library will soon be celebrating its80th birthday, Dawn and her Board want to ensure that itconstantly adapts and evolves to maintain its relevance tochanging times. “We’ve always been about ‘hands on’ booklearning in the company of other kids and we’ll be keeping upwith the times, offering e-books and possibly even supervisedinternet activities.” she tells us. “But we don’t want it to be-come just an internet game place!” both quickly laugh.

“We’re constantly seeking the advice and guidance from ourkids, their parents and the community at large to determinewhat we can and should do, and how we should be doing it.”explains Board Chair Dawn Tweedle. “If we’re to continuemeeting the needs of our kids, we need the complete supportof the community.

Which leads us to one of the biggest challenges currently fac-ing the Children’s Library. They seek not only the commu-nity’s ideas and advice on what the library should provide forour kids, they also need more tangible support. Since the Chil-dren’s Library is a privately-funded ‘Not For Profit’ entity, allof its services are provided free of charge. Yet, like so manyother worthy organizations and services, they’ve had to dosome serious belt-tightening in recent years, in order to main-tain their facilities and services, let alone improve them.

Last July, the Children’s Library reached out to the commu-nity, announcing its new “Champions of the Children’s Li-brary” campaign. A “Champion” is someone who caresenough to give of their time or their talents to help out at theChildren’s Library or, perhaps a little easier for many folks, making a financial contribution to help keep it alive and wellfor future generations.

You can become a ‘Champion’ for a nominal fee of only $5.That’s right! Just five dollars! That’s less than a few cups ofcoffee, yet the benefits of your contributions will last so muchlonger.
