Join Us for the Presentationat 8pm in the Outdoor TheatreShawn Harrison and Janet Zeller, Founders and Co-Directors will discuss what is on the horizon and how you can get involved. Special guests will share stories about the impact our work is having in the community. Soil Born Farms is about growing food, mentoring youth, teachers and beginning farmers, teaching people how to cook and garden, creating urban farms, planting school gardens and preserving wild spaces, developing partnerships and improving access to fresh produce throughout our community. At its core, SBF is about making a difference —transforming a shared vision of healthy food for all into a local reality in America’s Farm- to-Fork Capital. Please join us on this journey toward an Edible City and a healthier Sacramento region.
Our mission is to create an urban agriculture and education project that empowers youth and adults to discover and participate in a local food system that encourages healthy living, nurtures the environment and grows a sustainable community.

The American River Ranch is a working farm and a work in progress. Please watch your step and stay out of areas that are under construction. It is important to stay on the walking paths especially when you are in the field. The electric fences around the animals are on. Thanks!

Your Gift HelpsÚ grow more foodÚ feed more peopleÚ plant more gardensÚ train more farmersÚ glean more fruitÚ teach more kidsÚ mentor more teensÚ educate more familiesÚ create more farms
Restore and Develop the Historic American River RanchConstruct the new Farmstand building to include a snack bar, commercial kitchen and cooking school, upgrade the parking lots and install a shade structure in the outdoor theatre.
Grow More Food and FarmersDevelop seven new acres of vegetable production, manage our young fruit tree orchard and train more farming apprentices and urban gardeners. Help reduce hunger neighborhood by neighborhood.
Advance the School Garden InitiativeCultivate relationships with partners and share resources across the region. Advocate for a garden in every school by 2020. Provide life-changing experiences for more students grades 1–12 attending Title 1 schools. Host A Garden in Every School Symposium March 10 and 11, 2018.
Seed the Future of the Edible CityInstall a new greenhouse, purchase supplies and equipment, and establish a nursery to provide starts of vegetables, fruit tree stock, native edibles, and medicinal and culinary herbs. This will support the visionary initiatives of our Harvest Sacramento, Growing Together and Grow Your Groceries programs.
Invest in the Possibilities. In the spring of 2000, a seed holding the vision of what Soil Born Farms could become was planted in a vacant field behind Betsy Collins’ home on Hurley Way. This seed, cultivated with love and hard work and sustained by the support of a small number of donors and community partners, has blossomed into a powerful force for change in America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital. We have accomplished a lot with a talented team of farmers, educators, activists and volunteers but there is much more to do. Soil Born Farms Urban Agriculture & Education Project is at a pivotal point in our mission to improve health, reduce hunger and move into the next phase of development of our Center for Food Health & the Environment at the American River Ranch. We need your financial support to continue this legacy project. Please donate before Dec. 31 and be part of the change you wish to see for our community.
