CLINICAL MASSAGE

Positional Release is the positioning of either the whole body or a body area in such a way as toevoke a therapeutic response to help resolve musculoskeletal dysfunction. You will learn how toposition the client so that muscles are off-stretch or slackened, eliciting a neuromuscularresponse which releases hypertonicity, spasm, and pain. In this position, treatment to triggerpoints is administered with maximal effectiveness and minimal discomfort. This technique isboth user and patient friendly. Each of the following three workshops is stand alone and may betaken independently. By taking the series of all three workshops, you will have a solid under-standing and the technical proficiency to work effectively with Positional Release techniques.

Positional Release I: Postural MusclesThe theory and principles of Positional Release work will be presented. The majority of theworkshop will be spent learning and practicing the application of Positional Release techniquesto the postural muscles. You will practice the clinical approach of assessment, treatment andre-assessment.

Positional Release II: Jones Tender PointsIn this workshop the theory and principles of Positional Release work will be reviewed. You willlearn how to use PR techniques to address tender points throughout the body. The release ofthese specific points can be effective to reduce pain and increase range of motion of the relatedbody region. We will explore the application of PR to relieve the pain resulting from conditionssuch as whiplash, low back pain, thoracic and cervical pain, as well as pain related to scoliosis, osteoporosis and facet joint impingement.

Positional Release III: ExtremitiesIn this workshop you will learn the application of Positional Release techniques to common soft tissue complaints occurring in the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle and foot, such as tendonitis, rotator cuff syndrome, sciatica, iliotibial band syndrome, achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, andcarpal and tarsal tunnel syndrome.

Kinesiology & Treatment Techniques for the Low Back and Pelvis, June 6This 8-hour workshop is an intensive workshop on the pelvis and low back. It begins with areview of the joints and muscles of the region, along with a thorough examination of thecrucial importance of the posture of the pelvis as it relates to the spine. Treatment tech-niques are then workshopped for the remainder of the day. We begin with body mechanicsfor efficient deep tissue work. Comprehensive stretching of the pelvis and low back, includ-ing CR (PNF) stretching, is performed. We then practice joint mobilization techniques forthe lumbar spine and sacroiliac joints.

Pathologic Conditions and Assessment of the Low Back and Pelvis, June 7This 8-hour workshop is an intensive workshop on the pelvis and low back. Conditions covered are muscle spasmsversus myofascial trigger points, strain and sprain, lumbar joint dysfunction, disc patholo-gies, sciatica, excessive pelvic tilt, hyperlordosis, scoliosis, piriformis syndrome, and sacroil-iac joint dysfunction. The effects of lower extremity conditions upon the spine are also dis-cussed. We then workshop assessment approaches for the low back and pelvis. Assessmentprocedures covered include postural assessment, muscle palpation, orthopedic assessmenttests, and motion palpation of the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joints.

Note: The Saturday workshop creates the ideal foundation to critically understand the pathologic conditionsand assessment techniques presented in the Sunday course. Each day is a stand-alone workshop and may betaken independently.

Stretching and Deep Tissue Work to the Back and Neck, November 7This workshop is a hands-on experience that covers two topics: (1) simple effective steps forproper technique are presented and practiced to be able to deliver deep tissue work to theback and neck with minimal effort and minimal risk of injury to the therapist, and (2) effec-tive back and neck stretches are then presented and practiced. This workshop is valuable forthe clinical-minded therapist who either believes that s/he is unable to do effective deepwork, and/or works long hours and wants to avoid physical burnout and injury now andinto the future. It is also valuable for therapists who are looking to incorporate stretching ofthe spine into their practice. Note: This workshop effectively prepares the participant to takethe workshop being given the following day on Advanced Stretching Techniques and Joint Mobili-zation of the Back and Neck. Taken together, these two workshops offer a thorough approachto advanced musculoskeletal treatment techniques for the back and neck!

Advanced Stretching Techniques and Joint Mobilizationof the Back and Neck, November 8This workshop is a hands-on experience that covers two topics: (1) advanced stretchingand (2) joint mobilization techniques. “I call my approach to investigating body structure ‘The Spirit of Anatomy.’ Knowledge of anatomyis important to me only when it makes my work more engaging -- when it helps me help a client ormyself. Approaching the body experientially, and tying concepts to sensations, stretches and treat-ments, helps us take anatomy by the tail and set it in the direction we need it to go. Energetic andspiritual aspects of anatomy and cross-cultural approaches such as the chakra system enrich our wayof seeing the self and using our bag of tricks for approaching health and its opposite. For me, this isthe true spirit of anatomy, and my reason for teaching it.” - George Russell

The Core & Ribcage, March 22The core has never been a more popular buzzword. What is it, and how can we workwith it, in our own movement, and to help our clients. The relation of the core to thebreathing apparatus will also be discussed.

The Ankle and Knee, June 28The ankle and knee are multi-use, complex joints that absorb a lot of the stresses of the body and provide its foundation. We'll learn someanatomy, discuss syndromes, and work on improving our own bodies in our work, as well as the bodies of our clients who present with legdifficulty.

Beyond Rubbing the Hurt, October 4From patient complaint to bodywork strategies, it's great to rub shoulders when they hurt. But we can help more if we can learn to look underthe surface of client complaint to the syndromes that give rise to patient's difficulty and create pain. We'll discuss compensation strategies ingeneral and specific, referral pain, postural pain and dysfunction, and other situations where the problem and the pain are found in differentplaces. Postural analysis, interpreting client language, and ways to talk to clients about their issues will all be presented and workshopped.

The therapeutic relationship between the massage therapist and their client is intimate andunique. We often work with people in non-ordinary states of consciousness when boundary is-sues of separateness and connectedness become very important. Whether we are a new graduateor a seasoned practitioner, we are frequently confronted with a range of ethical dilemmas thatarise within the context of the therapeutic relationship. This workshop will use the National Cer-tification Board’s Ethical Standards and Practice Guidelines as a filter through which we will ex-plore ethical issues and define ethical wellness. Emphasis will be on identifying the ways that wecan support one another and the resources we have individually for cultivating and maintainingethical wellness.

This intensive course combines the art and science of touch to create safe, effectivemassage sessions for clients with cancer, in cancer treatment and with cancer histo-ries. In a lively, supportive learning environment, we carefully debunk the long-held contraindication to massage, then discuss current research findings about thebenefits of touch for people with cancer. You will learn essential cancer intakequestions, proper follow-up on the client’s answers, and proven strategies to deter-mine when and how to involve a client’s physician in decision-making. We de-scribe concrete massage adjustments for surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, bone metastasis and vital organ involvement. A balanced approach tolearning blends lecture, spirited discussion, and hands-on work with volunteer clients with cancer. Music, art and poetry by people who have hadcancer help expand our understanding of the journey. Massage therapists from varied backgrounds and massage settings leave with tools thatcontinue to support them in their work: sample client intake forms, physician information and permission materials, and numerous articles onmassage research.
