A Leader in High-Level Civil Engineering WorksSsangyong E&C holds balanced performance records inoverall civil engineering sectors ranging from subways, railways, express railway, roads, tunnels, bridges, ports, dams, and water supply & drainage facilities. Ssangyong E&Cis especially known for its specialization and differentiatedtechnical skills in projects requiring advanced technologicalskills for subways, underground highways and high-level civil engineering and water projects.

The Seoul Subway Line 9 was built just 15cm below an existing subway linethat was in operation. Little surprise, then, that the Seoul 923 Subway Stationwas recognized and awarded the Brunel Medal by the UK Academic Societyand the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). Indeed, Ssangyong E&C is the 'Top-performing Company for Korean Subway Construction' with a total of32km in length in project performance records in subway construction.

The 15cm Miracle

The Singapore expressway project has already achieved 9 million accidentfree man hours and will soon record the milestone achievement of 10 millionaccident free man hours. In addition, the subway project also has achieved8 million accident free man hours and continues to create new records eventoday. In particular, the highway project site has been awarded Singapore's SafetyGrand Prize 3 years in a row by the LTA Annual Safety Award Convention. Also, in 2012, Ssangyong E&C set an unprecedented milestone when both ofits project sites were the first to be recipients of the same award.

Awarded Singapore's Safety Grand Prize for 3 Consecutive Years!

Ssangyong E&C leads with a competitive edge in the BIM(Building InformationModeling) field also, in which cutting-edge 3D design techniques are appliedfor the digital data management of the entire construction process. In particular, the company is focusing on new design technique development efforts, such asthe introduction of the 5D BIM design method capable of tracking progress overtime and calculating input quantity.

Major methods

Application of all construction methods for subway tunneling in existenceDivided into three classifications for weak ground, different soil structures and adjustment to surrounding conditions, these, have been applied to every subway tunnel construc-tion technique-NATM, TBM, and Open Cut- in existence.

Pre-construction of the underground road structurePre-construction of the box- type tunnel structure for the planned 10 lane underground road at the upper part of thesubway station.

Traffic DiversionThe road and waterway traffic were diverted up to 50 times during the carrying out of the construction works so that themain traffic flow on the surface remained undisturbed during construction.

Ssangyong E&C's advanced technologicalskills underpin its reputation as 'Top-performing Company for Korean SubwayConstruction' with 32km of performancerecords spanning major cities all the wayfrom Seoul to Busan, and Daegu to Incheon.Such expertise and proven experience haspaved the way for the major subwayprojects currently being carried out inSingapore, Seoul, Busanand Incheon today.

The Downtown Line Stage 2 Project is a high-levelconstruction project which involves leaving undis-turbed the busy surface 10 lane road and 24mwide waterway while carrying out constructionwork 3.5m underneath the existing subway line. In addition, the construction also includes a1.065km length subway tunnel, 2 subway sta-tions and a box-type tunnel structure for the future6 lane underground roads. This project hasbecome a project with one of the highest levels ofdifficulty in the history of Singapore's subwayconstruction. In particular, based on special consideration of thedifferent soil characteristics within the section, every technological construction method in exis-tence has applied to the project.

The construction of the section that passes 15cm below the existing subway line 3 hasbeen successfully completed. This project was the most difficult subway constructionproject in the history of Korean subway construction. Indeed, both the TRcM and CAMmethods were applied, for the first time in the world, which received high praise fromthe world-class tunnel experts who looked around the construction site during theirvisit to participate in the 2006 International Tunneling Association (ITA)conference inKorea.

Major methods

The 15cm MiracleThe largest subway station, where Seoul Subway Lines 3, 7 and 9 pass underneath the old underground shoppingarea, was a highly challenging project as it lay just 15cmbelow the existing Seoul Subway Line 3.

CAM methodApplication of CAM, a special construction method forcing a large-scale steel pipe into an arch- form used in subwaystation construction in Milan and Venice, Italy.

Ssangyong E&C is continuing to carry outlarge scale road projects all around theglobe, including the Design & Build MarinaCoastal Expressway project in Singapore, the mega scale 179km length North-SouthCorridor project in India, and Indonesia'sAceh Road and Bridge Reconstruction andRehabilitation project, generally agreed tobe the largest scale tsunami restorationproject.

This 630 million USD large-scale civil engineeringproject involves building a 1km - long 10 laneunderground expressway on unstable reclaimedland and weak soil.In particular, acutely difficult technical skill isrequired to build the 285m subway tunnel struc-ture planned for operation 4-5m below ground.Various ground reinforcement methods have thusbeen applied to this project, such as forming the10~19.5m ground reinforcement structure 15mbelow the ground surface across an area approxi-mately 60,000m2 (60m x 1,000m) in size.

Major methods

1,350 Drilled ShaftsThe installation of 1350 drilled shafts 1-2m in diameter and to a maximum depth for roads and subway structure foundations.

Reinforcement Installations of about 330 swimming poolsPDCM(Deep Cement Mixing)and JGP(Jet Grouting Pile) methods have continued to be applied in the construction of underground expressways and subway structures, with about 810,000m3 of underground reinforcements constructed.

Super Beam MethodSuper Beams installed at the center of the left - right wall of an irregular curved section with a maximum width of 140m,with excavation works implemented in a stable mannerthrough the installation of a spread beam perpendicular to the wall.

Singapore Civil Engineering ConstructionHighest record of all time10,881m3 of concrete poured consecutively for 41 hours, equivalent to 1,814 RMC(Ready Mixed Concrete) vehiclesfor the 54m x 80m and 2.2~2.7m width ceiling structure.
