It will be a while before you

hear the birds….

There's got to be a morning after...come

on sing with me...

It is late morning after the storm... that is, twelve years

ago, the morning after Hurricane Rita crashed into my

world…the sun is shining... the birds are singing...

Wait, there are no birds...

This is part of my recollection of what happened in the

aftermath of Hurricane Rita crashing into my world…

I found it strange that after the storm, there were no

birds… perhaps, they are smarter than we are and they

evacuated…this is another eerie thing about

hurricanes... nature abandons the storm...

In time, we would note other anomalies in nature...

flowers and bedding plants became confused... we

were in "fall" yet, shortly after the storm things seem to

begin to bloom out of season...

If you are like me, I watched endless coverage of

Hurricane Harvey coming ashore… three times…I

prayed God’s mercy on those in the midst of the

storm…and, I remembered…I remembered my own

circumstances, twelve years ago…while there are

commonalities, each experience and circumstance is

unique…and, each has colored and flavored our lives

since…some bitter…some sweet…

For example, I remember the shock and horror of the

tree that crashed through the roof of my house…

…and, I remember God placing God’s hand on me,

shortly thereafter, and assuring me that “All shall be

well…”

There are many more examples, I imagine that you

have your own…just like the notion that there were no

birds singing and flowers bloomed out of season.

Has anyone ever given you a Bible verse? You know

what I mean…there you are in the middle of something

called “life” and a friend says, “I have a Bible verse for

you…”

This happened to me…long before I became a

“preacher,” a friend “gave/shared” a Bible verse to/

with me during a difficult time in my life. Now, let me

clarify, whatever the difficulty of that time, there

would be far more difficult times ahead.

This particular Bible verse wasn’t in the Book of Job, a

book I would come to know and hold very close to my

heart; nor, was the verse from the Psalms, the writings

of which more than 30% are rife with lament; nor, was

the verse from my favorite Gospel, John; no, this

verse was from a writing of a “minor prophet” of the

Old Testament, the Prophet Habakkuk.

The verse? Habakkuk 3:17-19:

Though the fig tree does not blossom,

and no fruit is on the vines;

though the produce of the olive fails,

and the fields yield no food;

though the flock is cut off from the fold,

and there is no herd in the stalls,

even though, I will rejoice in the Lord;

I will exult in the God of my salvation.

God, the Lord, is my strength;

he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,

and makes me tread upon the heights.

(NRSV, emphasis added)

Since that time, more than 30 years ago, this has been

my “go to” verse…it was cross-stitched by a friend and

hangs in my office today...it was my verse on the night

that that tree crashed into my world…so many

nights…so many experiences…I call it my “Even in

the midst of the storm” verse.

It is my prayer that each one who has been affected by

this storm, knows that “even in the midst of the storm”

God is there…and, not only there…but, ahead in the

recovery and rebuilding of his or her life…

Throughout the month of September, I will be

teaching/preaching through the Book of Job. Job is the

“everyman” of the Bible. Job is a good man. This is

the premise of the story. Yet, terrible tragedies befall

him in his life. His life serves as a witness of how we

are to be in the midst of the storms of our lives…

I encourage you to read the Book of Job, as we walk

throughout the text in the sermons. Sunday’s sermon

will deal with the nature and problem of sin. The Job

series begins on September 10th.

Remember: It’s always good when you can hear the

birds start singing, again.

See you in church.

Blessings,

A word about our response to those affected by

Hurricane Harvey:

I am still praying about how we will respond to

Hurricane Harvey. I know for certain that we will

respond in two ways: 1) we will deploy ERT teams,

please contact Milton Lizana and 2) we will be

collecting money to help in whatever way that it can.

Women Are Invited to “Pause” Together on Wednesday Nights Starting Sept. 6

In our fast paced, digital world,

connecting with people for more than a quick

hello is getting more and more difficult. Join

Cheryl Mann as she gathers women to make

connections and learn from author Kristin Schell

as they dive into Schell’s book “The Turquoise

Table—Finding Community and Connection in Your Own Front

Yard”.

The study will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist

Church starting Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.

Author Schell writes – “Are you consumed with a busy

life but unsure how to slow down? Do you desire connection

within your community and think, “Absolutely, but I don’t have

time for that” or “I can’t create that”? What if there was another

way through it all, a way to find those moments of peace and to

create a time for honest, comfortable connection? What if

meeting neighbors and connecting with friends was as simple as

showing up and being available?”

Women of all ages are invited to join in the discussion in

Cokesbury Hall, Room 206. Aldersgate UMC is located at 360

Robert Blvd. in Slidell. A free nursery will be available,

reservations required. Books are $12 and are available thru the

church office. To reserve a space in the nursery, contact

Aldersgate UMC at 985-641-5829.

All women are invited to come and sit around the table

and make new connections as well as strengthen existing

friendships.

You “Cheddar” believe it’s that time again: Van Geaux IX is upon us!

Come join us as we help raise money so that our church bus/vans can

“Cheese on down the road”. Van Geaux IX, our annual cooking competition, is a

sampler’s paradise. Competing chefs serve their dishes and guests can roam the hall,

taste a wide variety of delicious foods and vote for their favorites.

Invite your friends and neighbors to join you on Sept. 23 to sample this veritable feast. There is no admission

fee. Monies are raised with each $1 vote for your favorite dishes. Proceeds will help us pay off the bus loan and help

with the maintenance of the vehicles.

This year our new bus went to Mexico, Biloxi, the UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in

Baldwin, the Methodist retreat Center in Woodworth and all over Slidell and the North-

shore. The bus has been used by the Grown-ups, VBS, the youth and children’s ministry,

the Apple Tree staff, and for mission trips.

See you and your friends on Saturday, Sept. 23. Let’s keep our vehicle rolling!

Summer Mission 2017

Mexico

On Sunday, June 4th a group of 7 youth, 2 college young adults

and 9 adult leaders from Aldersgate United Methodist Church

embarked on a journey to Rio Bravo, Mexico to work with the

Manos Juntas (Hands Together) Mission. Our first three days in

Mexico were spent working at the House of Hope in Nuevo

Progresso. The House of Hope is an orphanage that will be

opening later this year. Manos Juntas will manage this

orphanage with support of some Methodist conferences and

churches in the United States. The House of Hope will serve as a

home for troubled children and for children who have been

rescued from dangerous situations.

On our fourth day, we had a cultural immersion day. We

travelled to a school in Rio Bravo built by Manos Juntas, where

the students were able to take a break from their schedule to

play games and socialize. The children from the school were

able to have fun with the youth and leaders from Aldersgate. At

the end of the day the youth and children took turns whacking a

huge piñata that we brought with us from Manos Juntas.

Everyone had a great time and made some awesome memories.

As we made our way home from this trip, we took time out for

some fun at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, TX.

THANK YOU to Aldersgate’s congregation for making this

amazing opportunity possible!

On August 3rd of this year the Aldersgate Youth had a beginning of the

school year retreat, including 13 of Aldersgate’s Youth. The purpose of

this retreat was to bring the Aldersgate Youth together as a group that

will support each other in their walk with Christ through the coming

school year. There were many team building activates and devotions that were designed to help the

Youth learn to work together and to bring them closer as a group. This time together culminated

with the Youth serving each other the Lord’s Supper, and an explanation that we as a group are a

chain. Just as each link of a chain holds the link next to it, so we as members of the group hold the

one next to us.

SUMMER

Summer 2017 was a busy time for the AUMC Children’s Ministry! In June we hosted an amazing week of VBS, where we “Discovered our Strength in God”. We had the pleasure of meeting over 240 of God’s Superhero’s….all made possible by over 130 volunteers!

Then we started our new full time Summer Program, Camp SONshine. Camp SONshine was a huge success, we were able to

provide a safe and loving environment to over 45 kids and their families all while having a blast with on-campus field trips, snowballs,

and of course a GIANT waterslide! We ended the Summer with Summer #SundayFunday, a day that was spent in fellowship while the kids played, we ate some amazing eats

from the Men’s Club, and had Snowballs from Kona Ice all while enjoying our church family.

It was truly an awesome summer!

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATED SENIOR RETREAT

The class of 2017 went on a retreat to Beckwith in Fair Hope, AL on August 10th. This group of 6

young people from Aldersgate has been together for a long time; some of them met at the age of

three in Apple Tree Preschool. The retreat was a time for this group to reflect on what they

believe as followers of Christ and to remember where they come from as they take the next

steps on their journey in life. When these youth were in confirmation in 7th grade, they wrote a

group affirmation of faith that was shared with the congregation on the day they conferred.

On the retreat, these Young Adults wrote a

personal statement of faith that is their very own

and will help guide them in their next steps in life.

Something’s Brewing Turns to

Paul’s Letter to the Romans

Something’s Brewing, starting Tuesday, Sept. 5, will explore what makes Paul’s Letter to the Romans so unique.

The women’s Bible/book study group meets at 9 am in Genesis Hall.

Study leader Kathryn McKenney invites all women to lean in close as the author Paul presents his longest letter in

Scripture, a sermon on what it means to be a Christ follower in this life. Romans is distinct in that it reaches back deep

into the Old Testament to walk us through the origin and problem of sin, the reality of guilt, and the impossibility of

saving ourselves and the ultimate rescue we’re given in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Listen as Paul

tells of God’s holiness, justice, and compassion.

No book purchase necessary. Just bring the “Good Book” you already have. Paul is telling us a single story—the

story of how God rescues us through the sacrifice of Christ.

A free nursery is provided with advance notice. Call the church office to make a reservation.“Now may the God of

hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy

Spirit.” Romans 15:13.

"Celebrating the offering is a spiritual act of worship every believer can actively participate

in each week. Giving becomes a celebration when the believer discovers the joy of

generosity, which grows out of God's grace." — Melvin Amerson, Celebrating the Offering

We Give

To belong to our congregation is to be a steward. Some may say that “stewardship” is just a polite way of referring to financial giving to the church. But it’s far more than that. One character in some of Jesus’ parables is the steward — the servant charged by the master to care for the master’s property. It is the master, not the steward, who owns the property, but the steward is responsible for it and is accountable to the master. So it is, said Jesus, between God and us. As God’s stewards we have three responsibilities:

» Receiving: We receive with joyful thanksgiving

the many gifts that God showers upon us — time, talent, treasure, our bodies, our friendships, natural resources, and the beauty around us.

» Managing: We take good care of what we have

received. We manage these resources wisely — for our own good and the good of others.

» Giving: Out of our gratitude in receiving so

abundantly, we want to share with others. Let’s look at four kinds of gifts that we receive, manage, and share:

Our time We did nothing to earn the hours, the days, the weeks of our lives. Time is a gift of God. How we choose to use it is a matter of stewardship. Some people lead lives of frenetic activity, always over-extending themselves to the point of exhaustion, while others sit around in apathetic boredom. Some spend all their hours serving the needs of others at the

expense of their own, while others live only for themselves.

As Christian stewards we try to manage time wisely and in a balanced way. And we give our time gladly to family and friends, to strangers, to the community, the church, and to ourselves.

Our abilities Do you remember Jesus’ parable of the three servants who received different amounts of money to manage while the master was away? We’ve each received from God distinctive gifts and talents. How we develop and use these talents is a matter of stewardship. Like two of the servants in Jesus’ story, we can invest them wisely — or like the third, out of fear we can hide them (Matthew 25:14-30). As stewards, we acknowledge the gifts we have without apology. We develop them further, practicing new skills and putting our talents to work in ministry.

Our resources We may think that our financial resources are our own. But when we recall that the time, the energy, the good health, and the opportunities for employment behind these dollars are all gifts from God, we see that the funds belong to God too. We are the stewards; God is the owner. So questions about what we earn, how we earn it, how we save, spend, and give it away, are all questions of Christian stewardship.

One vital aspect of our stewardship is our giving to Christ’s work in the world. We’ve learned that giving is most effective when we commit ourselves to give a definite proportion of our income through the church. For many, this proportion is one-tenth, or a tithe. Whatever the amount, we have discovered the joy in giving to God the “first fruits,” an amount “off the top” of our income, not what’s left over at the end of the month.
