As you are reading this, it should be approximately
six weeks into our self-isolation time, Yom
Hashoah has just passed, and in a few days it will
be Yom HaAtzma’ut – as many of us recall fondly
as a day of community celebration with Goldie's
falafel, visions of Haviva and Josefa dancing,
sounds of the Goldstein Family band . . .
It does seem odd to recall that just six weeks ago
we were conducting business as usual. We will
likely still be in physical isolation from others, but
hopefully getting better each day about finding
ways to be together – phone, letters, email, Face-
book, Zoom, Facetime, Skype . . . Morse Code . .
. It is vitally important that we continue to reach
out to each other every day. This physical isola-
tion time will pass and it's important that we help
each other maintain relationships in new ways.
For some of us, this isn't hard, but know that for
some this is extremely difficult. It is our collective
responsibility to help one another find the connec-
tions – find the sliver of light. This is a time when
we can all make a tremendous difference in others’
lives each day – and it's not at a rally or with a
check book. Please hold each other close (virtu-
ally) and tightly. Be the light.
For me personally, I've found great comfort in see-
ing many of you weekly as part of our Kabbalat
Shabbat services and during Justin's Shabbat Par-
sha discussions. I feel blessed and honored to be
here with all of you at this time where we can to-
gether test our inner strength and resolve. I'm still
hosting coffee Monday to Friday on line at 9:00
a.m., and I will continue to do this each day until
we can all be physically together again.
Please join me anytime you need to see some other
faces and hear some other voices. And if you have
an idea for a new way to engage our CBI family
virtually, then please share it!
I welcome the continued conversation.

Dear Ritual MavenDear ritual Maven-
So with all this time on my hands lately, I’ve been trolling–
I mean scrolling, through the internet, and I came across a
new Jewish holiday that I’ve never heard of. It’s not even on
my Jewish calendar! Please tell me about this thing called
Pesach Sheni.
Pesach Puzzled
Dear Pesach Puzzled,
Pesach Sheni is a great holiday to ask about as it seems par-
ticularly relevant this year. It is exactly one month after Pe-
sach and was created as a second chance opportunity for
those in the community who weren’t able to make their of-
fering to God on Pesach (those who had become ritually im-
pure). Pesach Sheni is known as a day that represents the
second chance – the power of repentance. In the words of
rabbi Yosef Yitzchak of lubavitch, The Second Passover
means that it’s never a lost case. In 2020, it might be the in-
spiration for a celebration for when we can all be physically
together again.
Until next month,
ritual Maven

These strange times have brought new challenges for all of
us. I hope that many of you have now attended at least one
of our online Friday night services. The first one, on March
27, was well attended, and it was so great to see so many of
your faces. We had some technical growing pains for the sec-
ond online service on April 3, but we’ve figured out what
went wrong and are looking forward to getting used to this
new medium. Just use the link in the CBI weekly E-news to
join with your fellow congregants. By the time you read this,
we should all be Zoom experts!
A special thank-you goes to our chaplain, rabbi Wolff Alter-
man, for leading our first-night Passover seder on Zoom.
While it was hard to miss the physical presence of our friends
and loved ones, seeing each other virtually and singing along
made a huge difference for me, as I’m sure it did for many of
you.
right now we don’t know when we’ll be able to resume serv-
ices in our lovely sanctuary. As I’m sure you all know, Bun-
combe County has extended the stay home — stay safe order
indefinitely. We are monitoring the situation closely, and will
make a considered decision when it seems safe to go back.
In the meantime, please send us your comments and sugges-
tions for what we can do to keep our CBI community
connected.

HA’SHOFAR PAGE 9
COVID-19 and Jewish EthicsBy: Robert Kline, CBI Social Action Committee
It is at once fascinating and horrifying to me that a tiny prim-
itive bit of rNA coated in a protein shell has succeeded in
bringing the earth’s dominant species to a standstill. Its trade
secret: immunologic novelty, multiple hosts both animal and
human, and asymptomatic carriers for propagation. This
pathogen inevitably lends itself to plague analogies as we
pass through the season of Passover: invisible, unpredictable
and recalcitrant to treatment, picking off the most vulnerable
in our midst, although thankfully largely sparing children so
far. Humbled now is the pinnacle of evolution, we creatures
endowed with a vast array of gray matter, who dominate our
environment with impunity, responsible for the extinction of
thousands of species. We have even set into motion climate
change that is no less catastrophic than before Covid 19 mo-
nopolized our attention. The overworked expression of “bib-
lical proportion” is no exaggeration in our current crisis.
remarkable in this pandemic are the two markedly different
demographic groups suffering disproportionately: the poor
and the medical providers. The latter are literally risking their
lives and their loved ones with whom they come in contact.
My beleaguered colleagues in active hospital practice and all
the other medical/ancillary folks engaged in supporting our
health care deserve every scintilla of gratitude we can muster.
Medical personnel are frequently described in battlefield
metaphors as front-line troops. But as an Emory physician
Dr. Michelle Au recently pointed out, they are actually the
last line of defense.
All of society is tasked with keeping us safe by adhering to
public health mandates, to prevent this pandemic from esca-
lating beyond the capacity of our caregivers to salvage. Pre-
vention obviates any treatment. If caregivers are willing to
expose themselves to danger, I believe we literally owe it to
them to obey social distancing, hand hygiene, and sheltering
in place. I also think it incumbent upon us all to ceaselessly
prevail upon our elected officials to mandate production and
equitable dissemination of appropriate protective equipment
for medical professionals and all others involved in essential
services to our society. I ordered the last three face shields
from a woodworking supply company for my anesthesiolo-
gist brother working in a Philadelphia VA hospital because
his department had run out well before the expected influx
had even begun. That is appalling in a nation that can, in bi-
partisan crescendo, spare no expense when it pertains to
stockpiling weapons. let us pray science will supersede the
current political theater, and that effective vaccines emerge.
Finally I turn attention to the poor. Minority mortality rates
are inordinate, and they often cannot afford to shelter in
place. Not work= not eat. The current restrictions are for me
largely an inconvenience, as I have adequate food, shelter,
and access to basic necessities. That is by no means a given
for many in our community, or even in our congregation.
Thankfully the Torah affirms the centrality of justice as a
Jewish calling. rabbi Bradley Artson states We cannot con-
sider ourselves pious Jews without a firm commitment to
making the world a more just and righteous place. Tzedakah
(righteous behavior) and gemilut hasadim (lovingkindness)
are among our core principles, and according to rabbis of
classical Judaism, are equal in value to all other mitzvot com-
bined.
So I’d like to express my profound gratitude to all at CBI
who responded to the Social Action Committee’s request for
donations to agencies working with those in need during the
current pandemic. Over $2,000 has been donated to Manna,
The Mission, Beloved and Jewish Family Services. Some do-
nations are recurring, so there will be a steady stream of rev-
enue. CBI’s collective commitment to Tikkun Olam is
nothing short of amazing. The need continues: please con-

What We Know About the Role of Gender in Leadership – 90 minutes – Via Zoom
April 28, 2020 – 4:00 p.m. Maximum 10 people
Even before the #MeToo, Gam Ani movements, scholars of leadership have studied the impact gender has on leadership
types and styles. The data are evolving as more and more is learned with each passing year. In this session, contemporary
research findings will be examined and participants will be asked to reflect upon these findings within the context of their
own experiences. Among the issues to be introduced are: Is There A Woman’s Style of leading? Are Women More Effective
leaders Than Men? How Can Understanding the Impact of Gender on leadership Make You a Better leader?
To Everything There is A Season: A Brief Look at the Book of Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) – 60 minutes/session – Via Zoom
May 5, 12, 19, 26 – 4:00 p.m. Maximum 10 people
This four-part series will provide an introduction to Kohelet (Ecclesiastes), arguably, the most controversial book of the
Tanakh (Jewish Bible). Participants will be introduced to the historical and cultural context of the Hebrew wisdom literature
(from whence this book is drawn) and will have the opportunity to explore what drove the biblical editors to include such a
revolutionary heterodox in the biblical canon. We will read and discuss highlights and key chapters of this wonderful book
and participants will consider the contemporary applications and implications of this challenging text.
Participants will be expected to attend all four sessions and to complete a modest reading assignment of selections from the
text in preparation for each session.
To register, please contact the synagogue office (828)252-8660 [email protected].
All of our virtual meetings are listed on the CBI website.

Pesach – The Torah Ten Plagues –Rabbinic Thought – Covid-19 and God
By: Walter ZifferOnce again Pesach/Passover lies behind us. This is my favorite
Jewish holiday because it has historical roots. While Pesach,
in my opinion, with its emphasis on liberation and freedom
represents the very origin of Jewish nationhood, the story in
its context of the Book of Exodus contains some disturbing
elements.
You may have guessed from the title of the blog that I am re-
ferring to the biblical Ten Plagues and the deadly plague of the
Covid-19 we are experiencing globally, as I write this.
Deuteronomy 11:13-17 reads, If you will earnestly heed the
mitzvot (commandments) that I give you this day, to love the
LORD your God and to serve him with all your heart and all
your soul, then I will favor your land with rain at the proper
season – rain in autumn and rain in spring – and you will have
an ample harvest of grain and wine and oil. You will eat to
contentment. I will assure abundance in the fields for your cat-
tle. Take care lest you be tempted to forsake God and turn to
false gods in worship. For then the wrath of the LORD your
God will be directed against you. He will close the heavens
and hold back the rain; the earth will not yield its produce.
You will soon disappear from the good land which the LORD
is giving you.
This warning was allegedly given to Israel.
Egypt and their pharaoh, without having received a similar
warning, enslaved Israel and were punished for doing so by
the Ten Plagues. While this is not the place to discuss the his-
toricity of the Exodus narrative and the story of the plagues,
for me it is shocking every time the Haggadah is read that the
whole population of Egypt was punished by the lOrD rather
than the perpetrators only. This was what we call collateral
damage.
Did the God of justice really intend this mass punishment that
included huge numbers of innocents?
The authors of the Haggadah, a collective work compiled
probably during the Talmudic period, were keenly aware of
this ethical dilemma. This becomes manifest in the tradition
that as we read the text and recall each plague, we dip a finger
into the wine and then tap it on the plate. While there are var-
ious interpretation of this tradition, the one that makes most
sense is that while the use of wine in the context of Jewish
worship is always connected with joy, we must never drink it
to the the affliction of human beings who suffer. Collateral
damage is never something one drinks to in Judaism!
We also know the Midrash in which the lOrD reprimands the
angels wanting to sing their joy as the Egyptian military in pur-
suit of liberated Israel drown in the red Sea. According to Tal-
mud, (Megillah 10b and Sanhedrin 39b), God silences them
with, How dare you sing for joy when My creatures are dying?
Finally to Covid-19.
Jewish traditional theology teaches, as we read in Deuteron-
omy above, that the calamity that befalls Jews and by extension
all human beings, is brought about by God as punishment.
While this is difficult to believe, one of Judaism's well known
rabbis (I am intentionally omitting the name and affiliation of
this person), publicly interpreted the Holocaust as punishment
of European Jewry for their assimilationist practices, etc. In
his alleged words: the Holocaust occurred because the cancer
of assimilation had to be cut out from the body of Judaism.
Why mention this? Because there are once again voices heard
that associate Covid-19 and our present global catastrophe with
God's judgment of a sinful humanity. It is not healthy to take
certain biblical texts literally. Fundamentalist Judaism, Chris-
tianity and Islam are dangerous religious orientations.
Covid-19 is a virus brought about by a natural process. It may
have come into being within an animal, some geneticists think,
and subsequently transmitted to a human. No supernatural
process in its generation or transmission process was involved.
This said, I would suggest we leave God, in whatever form we
believe, or other alleged supernatural origins and actions out
of the equation!

Chesed: CBI’s Support NetworkChesed is a caring team of CBI members who are here to help out their CBI community
during both challenging as well as joyous times. This committee has assisted individ-
uals and families in a variety of ways. Sometimes it’s as simple as making a call or
writing a card. Sometimes it’s preparing a meal, making a visit or providing a ride.
Sometimes it’s helping with a life cycle event: a bat or bar mitzvah, the birth of a baby,
the loss of a loved one. But we need your help to continue our work effectively.
We can’t offer to do anything unless we know who needs and wants some support. If
we can help you with something or if you are aware of someone who needs assistance,
please tell lee, who will pass along that information to the Chesed committee. Or you
can send an email request to [email protected]. Many people at CBI are wait-
ing to help out. At this point, over 70 people have put their names on one or more lists
to provide support for their CBI family.
We also need your help responding to the requests. If you want to be involved, please
tell lee, who will pass along your interest to the committee. You can also contact the
Chesed committee directly at [email protected]. We’ll get in touch with you
to see what you are interested in doing. We’re grateful to have you volunteer to do one
or all of the following (it’s really up to you):
• Visit those who are sick
• Make calls
• Be part of a shiva minyan
• Prepare meals
• Provide transportation
• run errands
• Assist with set up for a bar/bat mitzvah party
• Host someone for a holiday meal
Jewish communities have a rich history of taking care of each other. The Babylon-
ian Talmud teaches us that All Jews are responsible one for another (Shevuot 39a).
The Chesed Committee invites you to be a part of that meaningful tradition.
