oCT - nov 2018

The initial impulse for this space came out of the SULAM strategic planning we engaged in as a congregation three years ago. The Spirituality Task Force of SULAM gathered over the course of several months to identify priorities to develop the religious and spiritual life of the shul.Following the evaluation of options, the east part of the Social Hall – right in front of the windows, was determined to best meet our congregants' needs for a new prayer space. Let me tell you about some of the features and ask you to come join us there on Shabbat to see the space in use.- We’ve oriented the space facing the windows so that we will have a lot of natural light when we daven.- We’ve built a fence outside of the windows and added a garden so that we won’t be looking at the parking lot when we pray.- There is a flexible and portable dividing wall that will serve as the rear of this section to enclose the space and close us off from the rest of the social hall. - There are mechitza sections on both sides so those who want to sit in separate men’s/women’s sections may do so, while the main section is mixed seating.Eventually we hope to further beautify the space by repainting, replacing the existing blinds, adding artistic touches on the walls and a new portable aron (ark), among other ideas. The Social Hall offers a flexible space that is spacious but intimate with room to grow. There will be plenty of natural light and the opportunity to adjust the seating to create a stronger sense of community and closeness.

Our upstairs sanctuary is magnificent and a proud part of our legacy and our future. I personally love to be in that space. Having said that, for our normal Shabbat attendance of around 40-50 people, that enormous space is really too large.

I’m pleased to let you know that the Board has convened an Executive Director Search Committee. The

Committee is chaired by Shari Levinson; members include Kara Orvieto, Mitch Cohen, Tamir Heyman, Rabbi Rose, and myself, with support from Interim E.D.

Liz Field. We anticipate launching our advertisements for the recruitment in the coming weeks and making a hiring decision in early 2019. We will share the recruitment announcement with you, and would welcome your support in getting the word out about this opportunity and bringing qualified candidates to the Committee’s attention. Further information about the search will follow in due course.

The Carl is off to a great start to the New Year. We are getting ready for our yearly mitzvah

project. Last year the children decided to collect cans and plastic/glass bottles to raise funds to buy bees and chickens for families in countries associated with

Heifer International. We documented the progress with Point of Light through Disney Corp. and received 10 all park passes for our efforts. We then auctioned off these passes at our annual fundraiser. Two birds, one stone. This year the children wanted to help out closer to home. We are currently collecting the cans and plastic/glass bottles (please rinse before bringing them in) to raise money for food to feed animals in shelters. We want to help animals who have come to Oregon from war-torn countries and weather devastated US states. We will be raising funds through our collections for these efforts. We’d love your help by collecting and bringing them to shul! We’ll schlep to the depository! Be a part of our Mitzvah Project. We will be collecting items until November 30. The children and I thank you!

Elizabeth Fleishman, Preschool DirectorWe have planned a wonderful

year of K-12 programming! Our Shabbat School (K-5th

grade) curriculum combines a focus on “Living Judaism” with a dynamic new Hebrew program designed to engage bodies and minds. We have a monthly

rotation of “chugim” (specialists): Music, Torah Yoga, Storytelling and Food! Our Shabbat morning concludes with joining the adult service, singing Adon Olam from the bimah, and then joining the community in a Kiddush lunch.

Our Wednesday Night School (6th-12th grade) focuses on Jewish approaches to current issues for teens and tweens including: Israel, the environment, current events, bullying and social pressures, disability rights, inclusivity, homelessness and violence. We tie these hot topics to traditional Jewish learning and offsite mitzvot opportunities. Our learning also encompasses reading and discussing Jewish-themed modern books. We begin every session with a communal meal to foster social relationships. If you would like more information about our exciting educational opportunities, please feel free to contact me at (503) 226-6131 or [email protected]. The High Holiday services at Shaarie Torah were lovely this year. This would not have been

possible without the many volunteers who contributed considerable time and energy to help beautify the synagogue, welcome congregants and guests, and much more. Thank you to our volunteers!

For Shaarie Torah, the Annual Yom Kippur (YK) Appeal is an important part of the High Holiday season. As you know, membership dues cover only a portion of the operating expenses required to support the synagogue and the YK Appeal helps fill the gap. We are 85% towards reaching our goal this year. A big thanks to those of you who have given to this year’s YK Appeal. If you have not done so already, we still would welcome your support! Please save the date for the Milt Carl Way Awards dinner, on Sunday, January 13, 2019 – and for musician & author Joey Weisenberg’s Shabbaton the weekend of February 15 to 17, 2019. We hope you’ll join us at these and other exciting upcoming activities at Congregation Shaarie Torah.

a big year for the men's club

steph kotkins, men's club president

This past year for the Men's Club was one for the record books. Here's a look at all the

fun we had at Shaarie Torah:• Annual Spaghetti Dinner: December 24. Over 80 guests enjoyed a meal crafted by Phil Cohen. Mark your calendars this year for Monday, December 24 or Tuesday 25th.• Michael Allen Harrison Concert:

April 29. Drawing a crowd of over 300 people, the Men's Club brought in Michael's personal piano - a Bosendorfer 280 VC (Vienna Concert Grand), which is one of only a few in the world and produced unparalleled sound in our sanctuary. A magnificent night!

• Annual Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tourament: May 6. Bringing in pariticpants from the greater Portland Jewish Community and organized by Garry Weiner. We'll be announcing our 2019 date soon!

• Harry R. Nemer Service Award Dinner: June 10. Chaired by Barry Benson, the Men's Club presented the award to Kim Danish Rosenberg in recognition of her many years of service to Shaarie Torah. A serious sellout event; thank you to our many sponsors and patrons for making this event possible! 2019's receipent will be announced in January!

• Yom Kippur Appeal: due to your support at all of our events, the Men's Club is proud to announce we were able to contribute $15,000 to this year's Yom Kippur Appeal, a record for the Men's Club!

Don't forget, we have pickles again this year, ready for pickup, and they are going fast. Our hand packed pickles sell for $8.00 a jar. Thanks to Mike Enkelis and Mike Imlah for making this happen. Oh, the pickles are delicious! Contact Steph Kotkins at (503)320-2267, if you want to place an order. The health and vitality of every synagogue depends on an active Men’s Club and Sisterhood to attract new members. We need volunteers for our events, so please get involved and bring a friend. Synagogue membership is not required to join the Men’s Club. For more information, please contact the synagogue office and I will personally reply to you on the club’s behalf.

It seems like a long time since we held our last meeting at the end of

August, but now that the holidays are over, it's time to get geared up again. We would like to thank everyone who helped polish our silver Torah adornments and Kiddush cups, and those who consistently

worked in our garden to maintain it after our planting party. You might find yourselves doing these activties on a more regular basis. Our committees are about to have their first meetings to plan our activities for the rest of the year. Of course, because it's an industrial sized-project, although it seems a long way off, it's time to start thinking about Hamentashen again. Charlotte Tevet, Marje Jacobson, and Barbara Weiland will be getting us all in line. Before that we hope to see you all at the latke frying which will be on Sunday, November 18th, 10:00 am. If you have suggestions for upcoming events, or would like to contact us about anything concerning Sisterhood, email us at [email protected]. Special thanks to Brian Olson, of 45th Ave Cleaners (SW Portland) who cleaned 24 Talitot free of charge for our synagogue before Rosh Hashannah.

Jewish prayer is, as you now, fundamentally a communal experience. Trying to create spiritual intimacy in such a large space proved to be a very difficult challenge for the Cantor and myself. On the other hand our chapel space, while cozy and intimate, is too cramped for our usual crowd. I want to thank CST member Shoshana Kedem for heading up this re-visioning process for what a prayer space could and should be. She worked closely with former ED Gary Fifer and Channah Rose to find the meeting point of our shared vision and practical limitations on space and resources. We are very happy with the result! I also want to thank the members of the SULAM Spirituality Task Force for their time, energy, commitment and vision: Matthew Dubrow, Harvey Frankle, Shari Levinson, Michael Sasnow, Marshall Spector, and Sharon Stern. If you have questions or would like to discuss, please feel free to call or email me. Looking forward to seeing you in this new space soon. Blessings,
