Talk about German Occupation The Modern Foreign Languages Department has arranged for an illustrated talk about the German Occupation in France in 1940 on Wednesday 25 April at the school. The lecture is based on extracts from the filmed version of Julia Pascal’s play with a French cast in French. The conference is open to any interested parents although there will be an entrance charge of £10 as we need to cover the costs of the speaker. It will start at 08:30 in the lecture theatre and it will finish at 10:30.

L'ANNEE ZERO was researched in the small town of Maubeuge where

Julia Pascal interviewed those who had grown up in France between

l940 and l944. It is a play with music which explores, collaboration and

resistance from the point of view of ordinary people in this small frontier

town. Sourced from real lives the play explores the historical events of

the time through the memories and experiences of Gaullists,

Communists, collaborators and those who just watched. The text uses

satire and English music hall techniques such as Punch and Judy and

vaudeville to express the struggle against Nazism and the French

fascists. (The play is published by Oberon Books/English version)

Chess Centre of Excellence Wilson’s school is now an English Chess Federation ‘Centre of Excellence’, listed on their website at http://www.ecfcoaching.org.uk/ At present this is an informal scheme, with no official qualifying criteria nor responsibilities for being a ‘Centre of Chess Excellence’. However, it is an honour to be included as there are only a couple of other secondary schools listed – Millfield and Wellington College.

National Academy Schools Team Finals

Congratulations to the Wilson’s All School Badminton Team who competed in the first Academy School finals held at the National Badminton centre in Milton Keynes. There were 6 schools in the finals and we had to play all of them. The winning school was to be the one who scored most points in all games played. A comfortable victory in the first match was followed by an even more convincing win in the second. We then had to play King Arthur’s school which contained 3 county players, one of them having had an England trial earlier in the season and ranked in the top ten in England. It fell to George Heinemann to play this boy, George being ranked just outside the top 100!. He duly raised his game and pulled off the upset of the tournament winning a close fought match. William Gao continued his winning ways beating his year 7 opponent and partnered George to beat the year 7/8 doubles pair. King Arthur’s ten won the year 10 and 11 singles. The match depended upon Pascal Wye and Mitul Patel scoring at least 3 points against a county doubles pairing. At 1-10 down this looked unlikely, but a strong finish saw the team home when they scored 7 points in quick succession. Porchester were then beaten comfortably and then Deanes School were beaten 4-2. In the final match the reserves of Alex Keen, Chris Guyton and Michael Gunn played but were still much too strong for Stanground School winning 6-0. Photos soon on the web-site.

Medical Society Our Wilson’s medical society holds meetings once a week, presents new topics on new advances in medicine and discusses new opportunities to bolster our UCAS personal statements e.g. hospital work experience and volunteer work at home or abroad. We are trying to invite doctors and medical students studying at university to give a short talk about their work and any advice relevant to a career in medicine. Recently our society was delighted to welcome Dr Sanjay Kumar who presented an excellent talk about his work and what it means to be a doctor. The event was very well attended by pupils in year 11, lower and upper sixth. We would be extremely grateful for any support that can be offered by parents or family members involved in medicine and who would be willing to give a talk to our society. If you can help in any way, please email [email protected]

Wilson’s emerged as Champions in the U19 Surrey Cup last Friday in a confident and

impressive victory against Whitgift. Sadly, their spectacular run of success came to an end

in the National Championship on Wednesday evening as they lost away to Millfield in a

very close match. Well done on a fantastic season to our most successful Wilson’s 1st XI

for many years.

Intermediate

Mathematics

Olympiad

15 of our best mathematicians sat the Intermediate Maths Olympiad last

term. Their results have just been received and were outstanding: five

students received distinctions (only awarded to the top 100 in the country)

and another 8 gained merits. The most exceptional results were those of

Alex Barrell 11C and Timothy Kasoar 10B who were both in the top 50 in

the country, and Daniel Hunt who was in the best 100 Year 9’s despite

only being in Year 8. Nikhil Dama 10H and Alex McMillan 9C also obtained

distinctions.

Year 7 & 8 Exams Year 7 and 8 exams will be taking place next week. All boys have been

given their exam timetables.

Science On Monday Lewis Dartnell, a research student at U.C.L., gave the Sixth

Form Biologists and Physicists a lecture on the exciting new field of

Astrobiology. He took us through space looking for likely planets and

moons which might support some form of life. He also discussed what is

meant by ‘life’ and when we consider ‘life’ has begun. Not unexpectedly,

there were many searching questions after the lecture.

Geography The Geography department has recently been awarded funding from the

GA (Geographical Association) for fieldwork equipment. The funding was

much needed and the department has been able to purchase new ranging

poles, clinometers, tape measures and flow meters for the boys to use.

Fieldwork is an extremely important part of Geography and the equipment

will be used by the year 9’s in their upcoming trip to the River

Tillingbourne in June, as well as by year 12 at the field study centre in

Talybont.

Geography Department Ordnance Survey are holding a design competition open to years 7-11 to design a map of Great Britain in the year 2050. What will land use be? What will the weather be like? What methods of transportation will be used? Be as creative and imaginative as you can, whilst still thinking of the changes that Great Britain might experience over the next forty years using geographical knowledge you have learnt in class. Entries need to be on A4 or A3 paper, and remember the things you must always include on maps – title, key North arrow and possibly labels for your ideas show. Get creative! A winner from each year group will receive an 8 gb iPod Nano, and the school overall will receive an MPEG digital video camera. See Mrs Prestney for details – the deadline is the end of term so get designing soon.

Snowdonia MS Challenge Calling all Year 12 and Year 13 pupils who are keen for a challenge. This year the MS Challenge in Snowdonia will be held on Friday 6 – Saturday 7 July. Do you think you’re tough enough to endure a gruelling (and very muddy!) hike through Snowdonia carrying an MS sufferer in a wheelchair? If so, please see Mrs Prestney as soon as possible for details.

I.T. All current Year 10 students will be sitting the full course in I.T. not the short course as stated in the 2005 Year 8 Options Booklet.

Prefects Year 10 students will officially take up roles as Prefects from Monday 14

May in the absence of Year 11 and the Sixth Form. A duty has been assigned either pre-school, break time or part of lunchtime and this will be performed once each week until the examination season ends. This provides an excellent opportunity to build up vital leadership and interpersonal skills.

Southern Home Counties Judo Three Wilson’s boys won their weight categories in the Surrey Junior Judo Trials and so earned the right to represent Surrey in the Southern Home Counties Team Championship against Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and the Channel Islands. They were Benjamin Cummings-Montero 8S (under 50kgs), William Johnson 7H (under 38kgs) and Thomas Johnson 7S (under 34kgs). In a team of only eleven boys from Surrey and the “Surrey” London Boroughs (Sutton, Croydon, Kingston, Richmond and Merton), this represents an astonishing success for Wilson’s school. All the more astonishing as the boys are only 12 and 11 for what is an under 16 year old team and allows participants of any grade. In the actual competition held in Portsmouth on13th May 2007, Surrey were pipped by Kent, who won by a single point with the other teams quite well behind, so the Wilson’s boys brought home very well deserved silver medals.

Magistrates Mock Trial Well done to the Year 8 Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial team who performed last weekend in Southampton at the Regional Finals, coming runners-up. Prosecuting a case involving cruelty to a rabbit and defending a case involving drunken assault resulting in actual bodily harm, the boys faced their opposition with real enthusiasm and legal cunning. Judges complimented the group on their teamwork and their confident unscripted performances. The team included: magistrates (Ashley Measures, Alexander Harrison, Lawrence Maples), legal advisor (Oluwaseun Alayande), usher (Paul Reddiar), defendant (Christopher Avins), prosecution witnesses (Kourosh Pakroo, Brandon Lundini), defence lawyers (Oliver Hughes, Jozef Fuglewictz-Wildridge), defence witness (Sam Cheshire).

Year Seven Carnegie Shadowing Group

The Year Seven Carnegie Shadowing Group has really got underway now with the students having read their first novel and discussed its strengths and weaknesses with the group. Boys have been posting reviews on our Shadowing Group website, which is located at http://carnegiegreenaway.org.uk//shadowingsite. To find the Wilson’s Group you should click on “Reading Groups” and follow the instructions on screen. The reviews on the site are very well-written – congratulations to Harrison Gower and Kalyan Dutia for getting the site off to such a good start.

Year 10 Internal exams Year 10 will be starting their internal examinations after half term. Students will be issued with an individual timetable and should be revising as directed by their subject teachers. A letter will be sent home this week detailing the full arrangements. Reply slips, consenting to the short period of study leave, should be returned directly to the Office, via the Form Tutor”.

A wreath and a list of Wilsonians who gave

their lives in the First World War were laid by

students during a History Department visit to

the Battlefields of Belgium last weekend.

Pictures of the trip are now available on the

web-site.

This visit was organised by the History

Department in order to support GCSE

coursework which is based upon the Battle of

the Somme. On the Friday evening, a wreath

was laid by members of the CCF and a

representative of the year group, at the Menin

Gate, Ieper (Ypres), in memory of Wilsonians

who fell during the war. The visit proved to be

an educational and emotional experience

Break time uniform detention This term staff have been working to encourage boys to wear their uniform correctly, using form time, assemblies and posters to remind boys to wear ties and blazers properly, have their shirts tucked in and so on. Our theme has been to take pride in one’s uniform, one’s school and oneself. There has been a marked improvement, but some boys continue to abuse the school uniform and in order to address this we will, after half-term, be running detentions at Break times for boys who flout uniform rules.

Ofsted Ofsted announced its arrival on Monday, came on Wednesday and left

on Thursday. Many thanks to all the parents, the vast majority, who managed to return the Ofsted questionnaires at such short notice, and who commented so warmly and favourably upon the school. Your support means a lot to us and spoke volumes to the inspectors. Thank you to the boys as well, whose behaviour was even better than normal – in fact it was faultless. The inspectors couldn’t speak highly enough of you and were hugely impressed by the very positive way in which you spoke of your school. We haven’t yet received the final report, but we are told it will be glowing in its recognition of the quality of the school’s work and achievements. As soon as the report arrives we will post it on the website.

next week it will appear at break and

lunch times at the far end of the

playground by the astros and will

provide food that has been prepared in

the school kitchens. The same ‘healthy

eating’ rules will apply, so there will be

no fizzy drinks or confectionery, but

homemade pizzas, pannini, sandwiches,

sausage rolls, fruit and cakes in

abundance. We expect this will help to

reduce queuing times in the canteen

and, more importantly, ensure that boys

who want to get their time on the astros

can also get some good food at

lunchtime.

The van has a wireless link to the school

network, so all purchases will be by cashless

catering cards.

Year 10 Examinations On Monday 25th June until Thursday 28th June, Year 10 boys will be taking external and internal examinations. The timetable will be

suspended until Thursday 28th June and therefore boys are only

to be in school if they have an examination. Normal lessons will

resume from Period 3 on Thursday. Unless a written request has been made to Mr. Cole or permission for study leave has not

been granted, boys are not permitted to stay in the school

building. This is because it is crucial, for health and safety reasons, that we know who is in the building at any one time.

Should your son find that he needs to stay in school, then he

should contact Mr Cole as a matter of urgency. Full uniform should be worn for all examinations. Examination conditions

apply.

Surrey Youth Games Many congratulations to Dylan Rowley, 8H who has followed up on his success in last year’s Surrey Youth Games with a further win, achieving gold in the final of the U60kg category for Judo. He won all three of his fights.

Wilson’s boys performed brilliantly at the

Rotary Sports Event at Crystal Palace on

Sunday. The event, which is for Inner

London Schools, is one to which we are

invited because of our links with

Camberwell. In the twenty years that

the school has competed this is the first

time the school has won all four

competitions.

A highlight of the competition was the

Senior boys 400m in which Darren

Spain, Tim Haythorne and Ikenna

Nwanokwu were placed first, second

and third in the final.

Very well done to all boys taking part. It

was a great day out, with a lot of

Maths Challenge National Finals

In the Team Maths Challenge national finals this Monday, Wilson's came 4th out of 60 teams. This was an outstanding result, in the face of fierce competition from leading schools from across the whole country. The team members were Alex McMillan (9C), David Parke (9B), Daniel Hunt (8C) and Anand Krishnan (8C).

Management Event On Thursday and Friday 12 and 13 July, Wilson’s School and Wallington High School for Girls will be organising their annual Joint Management Event for Lower Sixth students. The students will be divided into equal ratios of girls and boys between the two schools. Both days will begin at 8.30 am so the students must arrive at least 15 minutes beforehand to register and to be allocated to groups. We expect both days to finish at approximately 3.30 pm. Smart dress is required. The programme for the two days will include talks on various management skills, presented by experienced speakers from the business world, and a variety of problem solving and team building activities which we hope will be as enjoyable as they are educational. We know from the past that the skills and knowledge gained by the students have been much appreciated and have proved invaluable in their further education/careers

Year 7 put in a stunning perform-ance at the U12 Boys Sut-ton Ath-letics

Championship compe-tition on Saturday, sweeping the board against our athletics rivals John Fisher and Sutton Grammar (who came 2nd and 3rd re-spectively). This was our best performance in this competition for many years. The outstanding tal-ent evident augurs well for ath-letics suc-cesses in the years ahead. Bravura performances in individ-

ual events came from Niall McManus, who won the Gold Medal in the 1500m; Jacob Paul who took gold and broke the bor-ough record in high jump and Sameer Khan who ran to victory in the 200m race. Jacob Paul, Lolu Oluwole-Ojo, Daniel Searle and Sameer Khan took gold in the re-

lay. Honours also went to Fahaad Alam, who gained Silver in the Hurdles, to William Goa who won the Silver in Discus and to Amish Patel who took Bronze in the Triple Jump. Superbly well done to all the competitors. A

Wilson’s connections with the Croydon Multiple Scle-rosis Therapy Centre go back several years now and each year we raise money to support the centre.

Last weekend Mrs Prestney and Mr Parkin-son took a group of Lower Sixth stu-dents to Snowdonia to complete MS chal-lenge.

This is al-ways a gru-elling and fearsomely difficult endeavour, but after last week’s dreadful weather the course was much muddier than usual and in parts of the course the team was shoulder deep in mud!

Over a very wet, very muddy 12 kilometre route, through forest, up hills, down hills, through bogs and water, the team car-ried our MS sufferer Martin in a wheelchair to complete the

course in 4 hours 18 minutes. In the circumstances this was an excellent time.

A very big thank you and a huge well done to Mark Baker, Michael Smith, Anthony Adams, James Knowles, Jamie Butler,

Faizal Sameja, Milan Amin, Daniyal Baig, Liu Wing Kin, Ricky Lawless, Danish Ahmed and Man-deep Dhariwal (who

managed to the finish the course with only one shoe!), and of course to Mrs Prestney and Mr Parkinson. They are all heroes!

13th was excellently supported and raised £217 for the African Well Fund. Standards were very high and a lot of cake was eaten. Well done to all who partici-pated. The competitions for sales and for best cake was won by Hayes. The total amount raised for the Well Fund this term has been a very impressive £1254. Well done, everyone.

CONGRATULATIONS

To Michael Reid who has gained a place against fierce com-petition at the Gonville and Caius College Summer School, bringing to three the number of Wilson’s boys who have gained places.

OLYMPIAD RESULTS

Seven of our year 7 and 8 pupils were invited to take part in the Junior Maths Olympiad. Three gained distinctions: Daniel Hunt (8S), Matthew Rogers (8S) and Keith Barker (7S), showing that they were amongst the top hun-dred pupils of their age in the country. That completes a suc-cessful year in Maths Olympiads, with a least one pupil in every year group from 7 to 11 gaining a distinction. Well done to all of them.

BOWLS DEBUT

In a new departure for sports at Wilson’s, we were recently invited to submit a team to take part in the Chipstead Bowls School’s U17 Invitation. Five of our Year 8 students, Chris Willis, George Young , Alex Hill, Tom Graham and Rajiv Thayaseelan gamely volunteered, undertook a programme of training and duly came an impressive third in the competition winning, in the proc-ess, £200 for the sports depart-ment.

Raising the Standards It was touch and go whether Sports Day would go ahead. At noon the Headmaster and Mr Molyneux were seen anxiously surveying the rain laden horizon. Mean-while, the barbeque commenced in a char-acter building deluge of rain.

By 1.00 p.m. a small patch of blue sky was espied in the west and the decision to pro-ceed was taken. The new House Stan-dards were raised; the gods smiled and as the races began the sun started to shine—and remained shining until the conclusion of the events at 3.30.

The races and competitions were hard fought with enthusiastic and vocal sup-port from the spectators. See the results

inside and a selection of photographs on the website.

Many thanks espe-cially to Mr Moly-neux and his team for organising the event; to all the parents for braving the weather to come and support; and to Mr Pryce Hawkins and his team for keeping us fed and wa-tered throughout the afternoon.

ALAN BENNETT's hilarious take on Kenneth Grahame's tale of the river-bank played to appreciative audiences last week. It was a mammoth undertak-ing for the young Year 7 cast, es-pecially the principals; the play runs at nearly 3 hours (not counting the inter-val) and the leading parts are very demanding. Jack Aguera was an endearing and spirited Mole, Kane Watts played Rat prim and proper but with a heart of gold; Nikhil Vyas gave us an avuncu-lar and jolly Badger, and Harrison

Gower was the irrepressible Toad, full of mischief, conceit and charm. The DT and Art departments produced some

memorable set-tings and some truly spectacular set-piece stage effects, including the rowing boat, the sports car, the train, the caravan and the enormous nar-row boat; and the singers and 21-strong or-chestra did a fine job provid-ing not only all

of Jeremy Sams' original incidental mu-sic and songs but also a programme to entertain the playgoers in the foyer be-fore curtain up. Photos can be downloaded from the web-site.

Breaching the Bastions of Privilege Michael O’Halloran reflects on the Eton Universities Summer Course 2007, also attended by Josh Wood, William Hogg and Adam Lawrence.

As we turned the final corner through the quiet Berkshire countryside before approaching the sleepy town of Eton in the shadow of Windsor Castle my mind was racing with thoughts of what I should expect. Did I agree with Eton; was it fair that a privileged few should enjoy facilities beyond the grasp of the vast majority of society? I was not sure of the answer; yet, on turning the next bend in the road such thoughts were expelled from my mind and the grandeur of the buildings immediately produced a sense of awe the like of which I have seldom experienced before.

The course only further reinforced my sense of amazement: with lessons from 8.30 till 3.00; with compulsory sport from 3.00 till 5.00 followed by lectures, pri-vate study and tutorials we certainly immersed ourselves into the life of an Eto-nian. For me this trip has illustrated the quality of pupils Wilsonians will be competing against for places at top universities. You only appreciate the facili-ties available at a school like Eton if you see them first hand: students at such a school face no restrictions on their learning experience. Beyond all else this summer course taught me that if we are to compete we must make up for what we lack in facilities with ambition and enthusiasm for the subjects we wish to pursue at higher levels of education.

WILSONIAN MEDALISTS Well done to:

Daniel Kenton; Will Tait; Darren Spain; George Roffey; Greg Pettifor; Ikenna Nwanokwu; Jonathan Mapp; Tim Haythorne; Jamie Evans; Anthony Childs and Miles Collin who have been awarded the Wilsonian Medal.
