Ramadhan Al Mubarak has arrived …In between our busy schedule, struggling to complete job scopes, tasks and assignments, Ramadhan comes gracefully as promised by Allah swt.

Ramadhan is here to be embraced with the opportunity for all of us to strengthen our ties with our Creator, to beg for mercy and forgiveness, to cleanse ourselves from our daily sins, to seek Rahmah and His blessing so that we ‘graduate’ from Tarbiyah Ramadhan and become a better person; mentally, physically and spiritually.

For the past months, various mishaps and misfortunes has happened around us that I loathe spelling out in this little space…

Ramadhan Shareef, the month of happiness and transformations, is gently slipping away, whilst some of us are busy cleaning and refurbishing our homes for visitors on Eid Mubarak, many of us are increasing their ibaadah, cleansing and sprucing their hearts with the hope of forgiveness and Jannah in the afterlife. However, whatever our activities are, we MUST NEVER FORGET our MUSLIM brothers and sisters in GAZA, PALESTINE, EGYPT

and SYRIA are fighting against oppression and aggression at every waking moment; imposed and masterminded by the Yahuds Laknatullah, Nasarasand their puppets. Please pray (solat hajat) and doa for them constantly as this is our most valuable contribution for the Jihad that they go through every day.

Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri

The event involved planting of shrubs underneath Jalan Duta’s bridge. After the opening ceremony that was officiated by

the Minister of International Trade and Industry, the honourable Dato’ Sri Mustapa

bin Mohamed, the participants were sent to the designated areas for planting. The

six of us were in the same group and we were involved in the beautification

activity of the landscape underneath the flyover of Jalan Duta. The activities

included planting new plants from five species of shrubs, hoeing the ground, weeding, fertilizing and watering the

plants. The programme went on for about 4 hours and we finished our tasks at 12

o’clock.

This programme gave a positive impact and experience to us as students, which is

to realize the importance of involving in public activity and to mingle with the

society from all level of ages. As promoted by IM4U, a community service

event like this is an initiative of the Malaysian government to encourage

volunteering among Malaysian youth. Other than that, the programme suited us

as Landscape Architecture students through our efforts to revitalize dead

spaces with planting and protect the environment to create a greener city. Weeding and removing unwanted

grass to clear the area

Fertilizers were applied on each plant

The Finale: Design Thesis Presentation

On the 8th of May, 2014, the 4th Year Landscape Architecture students conducted their final presentation for design thesis, where 32 students presented. The presentation was

held in parallel sessions at two studios in KAED. The students were divided into four groups according to the themes of their projects: Urban Design, Ecological and Park Design, Culture and Heritage, and Institutional Landscape. Each presenter was given 10 minutes to present their project and show their work through design drawing, models and multimedia. The assessors for the presentation were lecturers from the Department of

Landscape Architecture. Students from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Year also attended the presentation to gain exposure and learn from their seniors. To sum up, the design thesis presentation went smoothly throughout the day. A variety of analysis approaches and creative design ideas can be seen from the different projects

The students have received constructive feedback from the assessors to further improve their design thinking in the future, in preparing them for the industry. There are definitely a lot more things to learn and to improve in our journey to become professional Landscape Architects, but the overall comments were that generally everyone was satisfied with the works presented by the students. On the other side, the students were happy and pleased to finish their degree and ‘the finale’ of the four-year journey in a good way. Alhamdulillah.

Studio Visit: AQS 1200

> quantity surveying

At 9.00 am, 69 students boarded two IIUM buses at the Bus stand in front of KAED building. They were accompanied by two lecturers and one tutor; Sr. Yahaya Mohd Yunus and Asst. Prof. Dr. Nur Affah, assisted by Sis. Nor Fazlina Manaf. All students and staff brought along with them safety helmets obtained from KAED workshop.

At 10.15 am the buses reached the project site.

The group went to the completed show house where four staff of the developer was waiting to receive.

All students were then grouped outside the show house. Mr. Mohd. RizzalShamat, the Project Manager from Worldwide Holdings then explained about the project. Special emphasis on the QS aspects of the project was made by him, such as the procurement process as well as the cost aspects (Figure 1)

Figure 1: Students listening to briefing by Mr. Mohd. Rizzal Shamat, the Project Manager from Worldwide Holdings

Group photo was then taken by the Developer for their record, prior to the visit to the houses.

The students went round the show houses first to have an idea of how a completed house would look like, before they actually visited those houses under construction (Figure 2 and Figure 3).

The students were then divided into 2 groups and proceeded to different part of the project, to avoid congestion. Each group went to houses of different stage of progress to see the detail of construction involved. They were able to see (and understand) floor and wall finishes, roof and ceiling construction, doors and windows construction, as well as water and sanitary piping systems. Along the way, students were encouraged to ask the accompanying staff about the construction details (Figure 4 and Figure 5).

Since quality was the main concern of the developer, the contractor

chosen had a very good track record in completing on time as well as high quality output. So, students managed to see some best practices in construction.

Seeking Lailatul-Qadr (the Night of Decree)

It is the greatest night of the year like the Day of Arafah is the greatest day of the

year. It is a night about which Allah reveled a full Surah, Suratul-Qadr (Al Qadr/1-5)

and (ad-Dukhan/3-6)

It is the night when Quran was reveled.

It is the night when the Message sent to Mohammad, (p.b.u.h.) started.

It is the night when the light that would illuminate mankind to the end of life, started.

It is the night when every matter of ordainment is decreed.

Allah says in what can be translated as:

"Verily! We have sent it (this Quran) down in the Night of Decree (Lailatul-Qadr). And

what will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better

than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Rooh (i.e.. Jibreel

[Gabriel]) by Allah's Permission with all Decrees, Peace! until the appearance of

dawn." (Al Qadr/1-5)

and in Surat ad-Dukhan:

"We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed Night. Verily, We are ever warning

(mankind of Our Torment). Therein (that Night) is decreed every matter of

ordainment. Amran (i.e. a command or this Quran or His Decree of every matter)

from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messenger). (As) a Mercy from your Lord.

Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (ad-Dukhan/3-6)

A person who misses Lailatul-Qadr is really a deprived person!

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) said " The blessed month has come

to you. Allah has made fasting during it obligatory upon you. During it the gates to

Paradise are opened and the gates of Hellfire are locked, and the devils are

chained. There is a night (during this month) which is better than a thousand months.

Whoever is deprived of its good is really deprived (of something great). (Ahmad, an-

Nisa'i and al-Bayhaqi)

What happens to the person who witnesses Lailatul-Qadr? and what should one do?

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah

(p.b.u.h.) said : "Whoever stands (in prayer) in Lailatul-Qadr out of Eemaan (faith and

sincerity) and seeking reward then his previous sins are forgiven". (Bukhari)

It is recommended to supplicate a lot during this night, it is reported from our mother

Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) that she said: "O Messenger of Allah! What if I

knew which night Lailatul-Qadr was, then what should I say in it?" He said.- "Say.-

(Allahumma innaka 'affuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'annee.)

"O Allah You are The One Who pardons greatly, and loves to pardon, so pardon me.".

(at-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah with a Sahih Isnad)
