The month of November is known as Alzheimer's Awareness Month. President Ronald Reagan made that designation in 1983 and it is something that is still recognized today.
According to the Alzheimer's Association, at that time there were less than two million people with the disease.
What is Alzheimer’s Disease?
Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that leads to memory, thinking, and behavior problems. It is the most common form of dementia, accounting for 60 to 80 percent of all cases. It is also the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Alzheimer’s disease gets worse over time and eventually comes to a point where a person
can no longer accomplish daily tasks. In the beginning, memory problems are mild, but as the disease progresses, patients become unaware of their environment and may no longer be able to carry on a conversation. There are no
drugs or treatments to cure Alzheimer’s Disease, but there are treatments to slow down the progression. Researchers are constantly looking for new treatments as they search for a cure of this mind-robbing disease.
Do you know that we have a support group for Caregivers who care for loved ones with dementia? Melissa Plourde, LSW, CDP facilitates this group on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 12:45 pm.
Why not consider coming to this supportive, safe group to ask questions and know that you’re not alone in the struggle to care for a loved one with dementia.
GIVE YOUR BRAIN A BOOST!!
Best Brain-Boosting Activities Crafting, playing games, using a computer, and reading topped the list of activities associated with a lower risk of thinking and memory problems in a study of 2,000 people ages 70 and over. Those who engaged in such activities five to six times per week were up to 50% less likely to develop mile cognitive impairment over five years follow-up than those who did them once a month or less! c/o Neurology

Here’s some Turkey Talk...Did you know?....
Thanksgiving is the reason for TV dinners? In 1953, Swanson had so much extra turkey (260 tons) that a salesman told them they should package it onto aluminum trays with other sides like sweet potatoes — and the first TV dinner was born! Americans eat 46 million turkeys each Thanksgiving. The heaviest turkey on record, according to the Guinness Book of Records, weighs 86 pounds.
Female turkeys (called hens) do not gobble. Only male turkeys gobble.

You don’t have to be an expert artist to color! We have coloring here at The Senior Center on
Wednesday mornings at 9:30am.
COLORING
With the countless health benefits of coloring for adults, it might be time to pull out the crayons, colored pencils and markers! REDUCE STRESS AND ANXIETY -Coloring has the ability to relax the fear center of your brain, the amygdala. It induces the same state as meditating by reducing the thoughts of a rest-less mind. This generates mindfulness and quietness, which allows your mind to get some rest after a long day.
IMPROVE MOTOR SKILLS AND VISION -Coloring goes beyond being a fun activity for relaxation. It requires the two hemispheres of the brain to communicate. While logic helps us stay inside the lines, choosing colors generates a crea-tive thought process.
IMPROVE SLEEP -We know we get a better night’s sleep when avoiding engaging with electronics at night, because ex-posure to the emitted light reduces your levels of the sleep hor-mone, melatonin. Coloring is a relaxing and electronic-free bedtime ritual that won’t disturb your level of melatonin.
IMPROVE FOCUS -Coloring requires you to focus, but not so much that it’s stressful. It opens up your frontal lobe, which controls organizing and problem solving, and allows you to put everything else aside and live in the moment, generating focus.
