A huge crowd of two hun-dred and twenty local wom-en gathered at the Rye RSL in an effort to raise funds for a worthy cause on Sat-urday 20th May.

This year, the lunch raised over $8,000 for the new Wellness Centre which will be built at the Rosebud Secondary College campus.

A grant application is be-ing reviewed by the Victo-rian Department of Education. Once approved, building is hoped to start in 2018.

Geoff Seletto, Assistant Principal, Rosebud Second-ary College spoke passion-ately about the vision for the project, and Steve Ellen, psychiatrist and media commentator presented on

the key issues faced by young people and the need for well-targeted support.

Following the formalities, attendees ate a delightful lunch with entertainment by an inspiring group of musi-cians who formed a band expressly for the event, called ‘Mish and the Ahhh Soul Brothers’. We were amazed and delighted to hear their eleven-year old member bash out ‘Highway to Hell’ like Bon Scott rein-carnate.

Further funds for equip-ment and support services will be an ongoing require-ment, and contributions, no matter how small, are welcomed.

Interested parties can con-tribute by contacting Rose-bud Secondary College on 59868595 or

On the 12th May, at a Presentation Luncheon, West Rosebud Croquet was announced the winner of the SEMCA Golf Challenge Cup for the first time.

This Challenge has been going for four years now, and each year is played for by five clubs - Frankston, Mornington, Village Glen, West Rosebud and Sorren-to. Four different members from each club play one game at each club, then the scores are tallied up for the end result.

Cr. Antonella Celi joined us on this day and presented the trophy on behalf of SEMCA - South Eastern

Metropolitan Croquet Asso-ciation.

A raffle was held on the day with the proceeds going to Prostate Cancer in Morn-ington to help people in our region.

Croquet is played at West Rosebud Bowling and Cro-quet Club, 66a Elizabeth Ave., Capel Sound (Vern Wright Reserve).

Enquiries can be made to Betty Riley, either at the club or 5988 9244. We play Tuesday and Wednes-day mornings, with social play on Friday afternoon, followed by happy hour etc.

Look forward to seeing some newcomers.

Plaza Staff and Contractors enjoy their Volunteering Day

A dream held by many local Rosebud residents to see a Community Men’s Shed built locally is about to become a reality with the ‘turning of the first sod’ on Tuesday, 9 May, at 10am. Earthworks are due to com-mence next week, and it is expected that the shed shell, measuring 24 m x 12 m will be constructed without fur-ther delay.

Fundraising by volunteers has included the Annual Seawinds Charity Golf Day at Eagle Ridge, Bunnings Sausage Sizzles, and other small efforts. The Andrews Foundation and the South-ern Peninsula Community Fund have also helped to get the project progressed.

Over 50 local residents have indicated their interest and preferences for the pro-grams they would like to be run from the Shed.

Children from Seawinds Kindergarten and Early Learning Centre partici-pated in the ‘turning of the first sod’ ceremony, com-plete with their hard hats and spades, whilst the earth-moving equipment waited in the wings. Progress will be documented by the chil-dren through photography, drawings and discussions as a real life addition to their educational program.

On Wednesday 24th May, the staff team, together with contrac-tors, from Rosebud Plaza donated a day of their time—and lots of energy and enthusiasm - to the ‘Big Autumn Clean Up day’ at Seawinds Community Hub.

Tasks happily under-taken by the large crew included much needed window cleaning, cobweb removal, general maintenance and improvements, cupboard cleaning and, best of all,

painting of the soon-to-be-opened First Aid Room, as well as one of the Multi Purpose rooms.

Happily coinciding with the planned ‘Biggest Morning Tea’ to aid the Cancel Coun-cil, the Rosebud Plaza team joined other partici-pants, enjoying a delicious spread of scones, jam and cream, as well as hot savouries, sandwiches, cakes and slices.

Seawinds expresses a sincere thank you to all

of the team who gave up their time, and contribut-ed so much energy and fun to the day.

Simply put - these jobs would not otherwise have been done without the generosity of those involved.

Thanks team!

Jokes The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic primary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples.. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: 'Take only ONE . God is watching.' Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, 'Take all you want. God is watching the apples'.

A customer was bothering the waiter in a restaurant. First, he asked that the air conditioning be turned up because he was too hot, then he asked it be turned down cause he was too cold, and so on for about half an hour.

Surprisingly, the waiter was very patient, he walked back and forth and never once got angry. So finally, a second customer asked him why he didn't throw out the pest.

'Oh, I really don't care or mind,' said the waiter with a smile. 'We don't have an air conditioner.'

The 2016-2017 Rose-Budding Youth Art Competition concluded with a Celebration Evening, held on Friday 12th May. The theme for this year’s competition was “Life on the Peninsula”

Over 70 people joined with the young artist participants to view the artworks on display, participate in the silent auction and to learn who were the winners for this year’s competition.

Local well-known artist Michael Leeworthy did the honours in presenting the Awards, and congratulated the young artists on the calibre of their work.

The winners were as follows: In the 12-16 age group: 1st: Isley De Roche Neal 2nd: Zac Dyer 3rd: Oberon Bramall-White In the 17-21 age group: 1st: Emily Humble 2nd: Brittney Lee 3rd: Maddi Coladonato Participants in the Competition receive

a $50 gift voucher, redeemable at the Book Barn (Rosebud) to purchase their equipment, and can access mentoring sessions with artists during the competition period.

The Competition is run in two parts. From over 50 artworks completed, a team of local artists judge the top 20 finalists, whose artwork is then displayed at Rosebud Plaza. Whilst hanging in the Plaza over a 6-week period, shoppers can vote for their favourite. Shoppers who cast their votes are also eligible to be in the draw to win a $1000 shopping voucher, donated by the Rosebud Plaza.

Of the artworks hung in the plaza, winners are decided based on the results of the voting by shoppers— in each of the two age sections—12-16 year olds and 17-21 year olds.

The artworks not displayed at the Plaza are put on public display at various local locations.

Sincere thanks to the judges - Michael

Leeworthy, Leonie Sinclair, Peter Mellett and Lydia Webb; to the sponsors Rosebud Plaza, Rosebud Book Barn’s Matt Lupica, Peter Mellett from Adworks, and supporter Cath Thompson, who assisted the young people in mentoring sessions, and Seawinds Café Manager Liz Richardson. Special thanks to the young artists who provide us all with such inspiration and produce such high-quality artwork.

Special thanks to Seawinds volunteer Lydia Webb, who has for the past two years, taken the project from its small beginnings to be a feature of the local calendar of events, and a source of local pride.

Watch this space for the 2017 Comp which will be launched in Term 4 this year.

On 26th May, Seawinds Community Hub hosted its first Cancer Council “Biggest Morning Tea” for over fifty people.

The morning tea was dedi-cated to Norma Thomas, a power-house of energy, who led the weekly Knit-ting Group, and Patchworking Group, until her unexpected and untimely death in Febru-ary 2017. Much loved by all, Norma was remembered dur-ing the morning by the many people present who knew her.

Seahorse Café outdid itself with excellent scones and cakes galore.

Together with delicious food, participants enjoyed guessing the number of jel-lybeans in the jar, the name of the hand-made teddy bear, and participated enthusiastically in the raffle.

It was great to see that, by the combined efforts of every-one, $350 went to the Cancer Council.

This will now be an annual

Bettyanne Foster's excellent STORIES OF ROSEBUD WEST has a chapter about the Woodthorpe Estate. It was west of Mirriam Avenue and went west to include the Fielding St houses.

There was actually a house called Woodthorpe which gave the estate and a street their names. The house was on four blocks on the north west corner of the estate which explains why Fielding St was not a through road to Pt. Nepean Rd. These four blocks were bought by the Telford-Smith family and later sold to Bruce Colby whose application to create a caravan park was refused so he subdivided the site into 8 lots.

By 1980 Fielding St had become a rat run for drivers wishing to avoid the

bottleneck at the end of Elizabeth Avenue so residents requested that its Eastbourne Rd. end be closed; the closure was gazetted on 2-11-1983 and in 2003 the Woodthorpe Bushland Reserve was gazetted.

The Woodthorpe Estate was part of crown allotment 53, section A, Wannaeue, granted to lime merchant, William Allison Blair, along with all the land between (today's) Elizabeth Avenue and Truemans Rd, as far south as the line of Hiscock Rd. See the parish map: Wannaeue, County of Mornington [cartographic material]. In 1900, Catherine Crampton of Tasmania was to be assessed on 63 acres, 53 A Wannaeue but her name was crossed out and Blair's Estate had a note (in

lig. see folio 68.) Blair was insolvent and his assignee would have subdivided c/a 53 in an attempt to pay off creditors. Catherine Crampton was probably related to Blair who might have put the land in trust for her to avoid its sequestration. She might have been the mother of Mrs Alice Fielding who bought the two parcels which comprised the Woodthorpe Estate merging the titles in 1923-4 and subdivided the estate from 1941, the year her husband, Edward, died.. She is believed to have been a descendant of William Allison Blair.

I have 2 teenagers and a 21 year old, which according to him means he is a grown man. We are thankful he is no longer living with us, but love it when he comes to stay & grateful when he leaves.

Studies show that problem solving and planning strategies, continue to develop at least through age 20 & yes, we can see some maturity emerging.

Adolescent can be a testing period, even the most ‘perfect families’, can have children go off the rails in their teenage years, with mood swings and high risk taking behaviours.

Once seen as a time for parents to step back, research is showing our teens benefit from ongoing support.

Tweens: aged 11 and 12, with a developing brain this age group commonly

forgets to do things we TOLD them to do!! So help them build memory tools, like putting the sports bag out the day before or using the phone for reminders. Support your mid primary school child to make smart choices, as studies show children aged 10-11 years who can make sound decisions tend to exhibit less anxiety and sadness, get in fewer fights and have fewer problems with friends at ages 12 and 13.

At ages 13-14 our teenagers are susceptible to social stress, but often with underdeveloped social skills that make it difficult to understand exactly what their peers are thinking. This is your classic door slamming or crying teen.

Family support is a key stress buffer. Parents can help decode peers’ social cues and model healthy coping behaviour, like exercise or meditation. Teens whose families provide companionship, problem-solving and emotional support are less likely to become depressed after exposure to severe stress.

At the 15-16 year mark risk taking is at its highest! Normal fears of danger are temporarily suppressed during adolescence, a shift scientists believe is rooted in an evolutionary need to leave home and explore new habitats. Studies have found adolescents fail to change their appraisal of risky situations even after being warned that the hazards are greater than they expect. Parents should encourage healthy friendships, as teens with friends they trust and count on for support are less likely to engage in risky behaviour such as shoplifting, riding with a dangerous driver or having unprotected sex. A University of Melbourne study shows 16 year olds with warm affectionate Mums in their pre teen years displayed brain changes linked to lower rates of sadness, anxiety & greater self control. That’s good news for us protective Mums!!

At 17-18 years of age parents may be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Older teens can now put the brakes on emotions

and risk-taking & they are better at noticing how others feel and showing empathy. Their problem-solving and strategy-planning skills are developing, however they may need help deciphering complex social situations.

No matter the age teenagers need our support, coaching, good examples and most of all understanding. Good Luck

It was fi-nally recovered by the po-lice at Mt.Martha in a badly damaged condition. This is the sixth car stolen in a week between Mornington and Rosebud, and the sec-ond time in ten days that this particular car has been stolen. The police warn car owners in the Peninsula of the prevalence of car thieves in the district, and to take all due precautions with their cars. Car thieves are very busy in the city also, the "Standard" photog-rapher having his stolen on Thursday night. Due to the efficiency of the Wireless Patrol, the car was recov-ered later.
