Week 5 - Term 3, 14th August 2013 Dear Parents, To our K - 2 team of staff and students, a huge round of applause for a wonderful Showcase last night. As you took us on a journey around the world, we were entertained at each stop by singing, dancing, music, colour and a huge amount of enthusiasm and enjoyment! The show was a wonderful example of synergy and the achievements of Kororo Public School. Congratulations! ETHICS CLASSES Schools may include a course in special education in ethics as an option for students whose parents have requested exemption from special religious education (SRE). Current implementation is for primary schools only. Special education in ethics is education in ethical decision making, action and reflection within a secular framework, based on a branch of philosophy. Primary Ethics are able to make special education in ethics available in Years 1-6 at schools where Primary Ethics has appointed a coordinator and trained volunteer teachers are available. At Kororo Public School we are one of a very few schools on the North Coast to have a coordinator appointed and volunteer teachers ready to begin classes. The composition of classes is determined by the Principal once the parent body has been notified of the availability of special education in ethics classes at their school for children whose parents have sought exemption from special religious education. Parents whose children attended special religious education in 2013 but who wish them to participate in special education in ethics classes must first, formally seek exemption from special religious education. This must be done in writing. Places can only be offered in special education in ethics classes (if available) after the written application has been confirmed. In the event that demand for ethics classes exceeds supply, those children who had previously opted out of special religious education will have priority access to this class over others who might want to subsequently join. The school will make every effort to accommodate all students though please be aware that we are limited by teacher availability and timeslots. Those students who already have SRE exemptions in grades 1-6 will receive a note this week which will give parents the opportunity to opt into Ethics should they wish their child to do so. Hope it’s a great week for everyone. Sue Mackay Habit 3: Put First Things First ‘The key is not to prioritise your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.’ Congratulations

DEPUTY’S REPORT - GOLD BALL

Last Thursday evening Year 6 held their Gold Ball. As

part of their H.S.I.E. unit on the Gold Rush the

students learnt the traditional dances of the 1850s in

Australia and came along dressed in the fashion of

that time. Parents joined their children for supper

and the last two dances of the evening.

Everyone had a great time, especially the parents

who joined in the dancing with great enthusiasm. A

special thank you to the Year 6 teachers for

organising the evening. What a great way to learn

history.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR! TWILIGHT FAIR 2013

FRIDAY, 1ST NOVEMBER

November seems such a long way into the future but

it is only 9 SCHOOL WEEKS TO GO!

We DESPERATELY NEED people to volunteer to run

stalls and, if you feel you are able to help please

contact Anita on 6656 4550 (after hours) or email us

on [email protected].

A Twilight Fair meeting will be held on Monday,

19th August in the staffroom at 7pm. All parents

are most welcome to attend.

Also, we are seeking donations to our Monster Raffle

and if you or someone you know is able to help we

would love to hear from you!

School Excursions and Performances Reminder

Schools need to set a cutoff date for payment of any

variation to our routines in order to avoid any compromise to the safety and security of our students. We also must

confirm bookings at least 24hrs prior to the excursion or activity or else we can find ourselves liable for a cost we did

not need to incur.

On all excursion notes there is wording which clearly states

the date by which all notes and money are due. If your child has not paid for the excursion by the stated date we will not

be able to include them in the excursion, even if the note

and money is brought in on the excursion day. Parents who find themselves in the position of needing a little more time

for payment must let us know by the date on the permission note. Every now and again, a student may be

away and miss receiving a note, the office may be able to accommodate an extension time on payment.

Please be aware that unless there are extenuating circumstances, the cutoff date for excursion/activity

payments will be adhered to. Payment must legally be accompanied by signed parent/guardian permission. Please

check your child’s bag for notes, read the newsletter

regularly or check the term calendar published last week. We will gladly add parents to our email list so that you

always have information on hand.

Ryans Bus Services have set up a Facebook page to communicate directly with parent/students and even schools, to let them know of any changes/disruptions/delays with school and passenger services. This helps alleviate confusion and queries if there are any accidents or incidents on our roads.

Coffs Harbour District Athletics Carnival

Last Wednesday 60 students from Kororo attended the district athletics carnival at the CEX Stadium. All students tried their hardest in their nominated events and many were successful in making it to the Mid North Coast carnival next week. Congratulations go to all children on their excellent behaviour and especially to those Year 6 children that came along and helped teachers run events. Jorja Welch was named Junior Girl Champion, well done!

Kororo Public School also won the handicap pointscore for the day.
